Influence of Avatar Identification on the Attraction of Virtual Reality Games: Survey Study.

In gaming, the embodied interaction experience of avatars serves as a key to emotional sublimation in artistic creation. This presents the emotional expression of art in a more vivid form, which is a critical factor in the high attractiveness of virtual reality (VR) games to players. Intertwined with players' physiological and psychological responses, immersion is an essential element for enhancing gaming attractiveness. This study aims to explore how to help players establish a sense of identity with their embodied avatars in VR game environments and enhance the attractiveness of games to players through the mediating effect of immersion. We conducted a structured questionnaire survey refined through repeated validation. A total of 402 VR users were publicly recruited through the internet from March 22, 2024, to April 13, 2024. Statistical analysis was conducted using the SPSS and Amos tools, including correlation analysis, regression analysis, and mediation effect verification. We divided the self-differentiation theory into 4 dimensions to validate their impact on avatar identification. Subsequently, we correlated the effects of avatar identification, game immersion, and game attractiveness and proposed a hypothetical mediating model. Regression analysis of the predictor variables and the dependent variable indicated a significant positive predictive effect (P<.001); the variance inflation factor values for each independent variable were all <5. In the hypothesis testing of the mediating effect, the total mediating effect was significant (P<.001). Regarding the direct impact, both the effect of avatar identification on immersion and the effect of immersion on game attractiveness were significant (P<.001). However, the direct effect of avatar identification on game attractiveness was not significant (P=.28). Regarding the indirect impact, the effect of avatar identification on game attractiveness was significant (P<.001). The results indicate a significant positive correlation between different dimensions of the self-differentiation theory and identification with avatars. Moreover, immersion in the game fully mediated the relationship between identification with avatars and game attractiveness. This study underscores that the embodiment of avatar identification is influenced by dimensions of self-differentiation, and the impact of identification with avatars on game attractiveness is contingent upon full mediation by immersion. These findings deepen our understanding of the role of avatar identification in VR gaming.

Experimental verification of multifunctional biomechanical models effectiveness regarding main elements of technical actions, applied by track and field athletes specialized in sports walking, in the process of their technical training

Current training system for track and field athletes specialized in sports walking requires application of the latest technologies for modelling athletes’ technical actions. The approach suggested by the authors presupposes the use of multifunctional biomechanical models of the main elements of the technical actions by track and field athletes, who specialize in sports walking, as far as it has a beneficial effect on athletes’ chances to achieve high sports results. The authors suggest improving the process of technical training of track and field athletes based on the use of multifunctional biomechanical models of the main elements of the athletes' technical actions. The study contributes to the improvement of the process of technical training of track and field athletes who specialize in sports walking. The developed approach regarding use of multifunctional biomechanical models of the main technique elements within athletic walking in the process of track and field athletes’ technical training has proven its effectiveness in terms of a favourable effect on the level of technical preparation and sports results. In the main group, at the end of the experiment, there was an improvement of sports results from 1:27:18 (S = 0:01:41) to 1:23:44 (S = 0:02:07), which comprised 4.3% with statistically significant differences being p&lt;0.05, while relatively to statistics (p&lt;0.05) almost all informative biomechanical indicators of the technique have also improved. At the end of the experiment, the athletes of the control group also improved their sports results from 1:27:45 (S = 0:02:02) to 1:27:32 (S = 0:03:48), which represented 0.3% of statistically significant difference (p &gt; 0.05). Almost all informative biomechanical indicators of the technique have also improved, however, statistically significant differences were not found (p &gt; 0.05).

Food fraud prevention strategies: Building an effective verification ecosystem.

Food fraud is an ever-present threat that regulators, food business operators (FBOs), and consumers need to be aware of, prevent where possible, and address by developing mitigation strategies to detect and reduce its negative consequences. While extant literature focuses on food fraud detection, there is less attention given to prevention strategies, a knowledge gap this review seeks to address. The aim of this review was to consider food-related fraud prevention initiatives, understand what has worked well, and develop a series of recommendations on preventing food fraud, both policy related and for future research. Reactive (including intelligence based) food fraud detection dominates over prevention strategies, especially where financial, knowledge, and time resources are scarce. First-generation tools have been developed for food fraud vulnerability assessment, risk analysis, and development of food fraud prevention strategies. However, examples of integrated food control management systems at FBO, supply chain, and regulatory levels for prevention are limited. The lack of hybrid (public/private) integration of food fraud prevention strategies, as well as an effective verification ecosystem, weakens existing food fraud prevention plans. While there are several emergent practice models for food fraud prevention, they need to be strengthened to focus more specifically on capable guardians and target hardening. This work has implications for policymakers, Official Controls bodies, the food industry, and ultimately consumers who seek to consistently purchase food that is safe, legal, and authentic.

A Comprehensive Survey on Edge Data Integrity Verification: Fundamentals and Future Trends

Recent advances in edge computing (EC) have pushed cloud-based data caching services to edge; however, such emerging edge storage comes with numerous challenging and unique security issues. One of them is the problem of edge data integrity verification (EDIV), which coordinates multiple participants (e.g., data owners and edge nodes) to inspect whether data cached on edge is authentic. To date, various solutions have been proposed to address the EDIV problem, while there is no systematic review. Thus, we offer a comprehensive survey for the first time, aiming to show current research status, open problems, and potentially promising insights for readers to further investigate this under-explored field. Specifically, we begin by stating the significance of the EDIV problem, the integrity verification difference between data cached on cloud and edge, and three typical system models with corresponding inspection processes. To thoroughly assess prior research efforts, we synthesize a universal criteria framework that an effective verification approach should satisfy. On top of it, a schematic development timeline is developed to reveal the research advance on EDIV in a sequential manner, followed by a detailed review of the existing EDIV solutions. Finally, we highlight intriguing research challenges and possible directions for future work, along with a discussion on how forthcoming technology, e.g., machine learning and context-aware security, can augment security in EC. Given our findings, some major observations are: there is a noticeable trend to equip EDIV solutions with various functions and diversify study scenarios; completing EDIV within two types of participants (i.e., data owner and edge nodes) is garnering escalating interest among researchers; although the majority of existing methods rely on cryptography, emerging technology is being explored to handle the EDIV problem.

Optimized graphene metamaterial for dual plasmon-induced transparency in terahertz band with multifunctional applications

Abstract This paper proposes a patterned graphene periodic metamaterial structure, optimized using an improved genetic algorithm to adjust the position and size of each graphene strip, thereby achieving dual plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) effects in the terahertz band, resulting in extraordinary multifunctionality. The finite difference time domain method is employed to obtain the transmission spectrum, and coupled mode theory is used for theoretical analysis and verification of the dual-PIT effect. The structure exhibits multifunctionality: when used as a photoelectric switch, it achieves a modulation depth of up to 99.04% with an insertion loss as low as 0.16 dB by tuning the Fermi level. Additionally, the structure demonstrates excellent sensing performance, with a maximum sensitivity and figure of merit reaching 0.84 THz/RIU and 88.55, respectively. Furthermore, the slow light performance of the structure is investigated, showing a group delay of up to 0.5 picoseconds.

Effect of underwater friction stir welding parameters on AA5754 alloy joints: experimental studies

The water as a welding environment may generate serious technological and metallurgical problems but in certain cases, the physicochemical properties of water can be used effectively, e.g., to impart the specific properties of welded materials. The purpose of the work was verification of effectiveness of the water cooling of aluminium alloy AA5754 for various sets of technological parameters of underwater friction stir welding (UFSW). For the joints performed with the range of parameters of rotational speed: 475–925 rpm and welding speed: 47.5–95 mm/min, the following examinations were carried out: visual tests, radiographic tests, static tensile test, fractography (SEM, scanning electron microscope) analysis, and surface texture analysis performed with 3D measurement system. All of the joints were characterized with some amount of flash. Besides, depending on the values of selected parameters, the defects arising from inadequate stirring were found—tunnel defects and melting. The best appearance of the joint was obtained for the set of parameters of 925 rpm and 47.5 mm/min. The samples of the same joint were found to be of the highest mechanical properties—ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 194 MPa and elongation (A) of 9.2%. The results were confirmed by the fractography analysis, which in this case indicated the ductile fracture mode. Dynamic plastic behaviour strongly depends on the process parameter values, which was reflected in the results of surface texture analysis. The parameter selection resulted in significant changes in the roughness results (from 8 to 14.2 µm depending on the sample) as well as the flow ring distance of the weld (from 20 to 50 µm depending on the sample).

Correction method and verification of radial inertia and friction effects under a unified deformation framework in SHPB experiments on soft materials

During the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) experiments, significant measurement errors can arise due to severe radial inertia and friction effects. Previous studies have developed various correction methods for these two effects. However, these methods have problems such as over-reliance on the volume invariance assumption of the specimen and inconsistent assumptions on the deformation patterns of the two effects, which limit their universality and effectiveness. Therefore, this paper integrates the radial inertia effect and friction effect in a unified deformation framework through reasonable assumptions, and proposes a method to correct the specimen from a complex stress state to a uniaxial stress state. SHPB numerical simulation experiments demonstrate that this method effectively eliminates the combined effects of radial inertia and friction on measurement results for both elastic and viscoelastic materials, including the size effect associated with these two factors. Additionally, the paper presents a scheme to determine the friction coefficient using the size effect of the specimens when the friction coefficient between the specimen and the bar is unknown. Finally, the method was applied to correct the stresses measured in SHPB experiments on silicone rubber of different diameters. It successfully eliminated discrepancies in the stress-strain relationships between specimens of various sizes and determined a friction coefficient that fell within a reasonable range.

Experimental verification of solubilization effect of soil bromine by waterlogging reduction

ABSTRACT Although the concentration of bromine in the Earth’s crust is only approximately 2 µg g−1, it is one of the most crucial elements in daily human life. On the Earth’s surface, bromine is thought to be widely transported and circulated in the hydrosphere, atmosphere, lithosphere, and biosphere. However, little is known regarding the dynamics of bromine in the terrestrial environments. In this study, waterlogging incubation tests were conducted on two soil types, Lowland soil and Andosol, to verify the solubilization effect of waterlogging on soil bromine. The amount of bromine in the soil extracts increased considerably with incubation time in Lowland soil and Andosol, proving that the soil reduction caused by waterlogging enhanced the solubilization of soil bromine. The amount of bromine solubilized by soil reduction tended to be higher in Andosols, which had a higher total bromine concentration than Lowland soil. The amount by soil reduction during the 28 days period ranged from 0.18 to 1.14 µg g−1 for the Lowland soil group and from 0.20 to 30.2 µg g−1 for the Andosol group. Solubilized bromine could not remain in the soil, and most of it leached out with the percolation water, as shown by the soil-filled column tests. To estimate the amount of bromine leached from a rice paddy field under waterlogged conditions, a percolation test was conducted using Wagner pot-cropped paddy rice plants. The results showed that 531 to 544 mg of bromine per square meter of soil surface leached during one growing season. The amount of bromine leached from the soil was much higher than the previously reported annual amount of bromine addition to land from atmospheric deposition.

Termination and Universal Termination Problems for Nondeterministic Quantum Programs

Verifying quantum programs has attracted a lot of interest in recent years. In this paper, we consider the following two categories of termination problems of quantum programs with nondeterminism, namely: (1) (termination) Is an input of a program terminating with probability one under all schedulers? If not, how can a scheduler be synthesized to evidence the nontermination? (2) (universal termination) Are all inputs terminating with probability one under their respective schedulers? If yes, a further question asks whether there is a scheduler that forces all inputs to be terminating with probability one together with how to synthesize it; otherwise, how can an input be provided to refute the universal termination? For the effective verification of the first category, we over-approximate the reachable set of quantum program states by the reachable subspace, whose algebraic structure is a linear space. On the other hand, we study the set of divergent states from which the program terminates with probability zero under some scheduler. The divergent set also has an explicit algebraic structure. Exploiting these explicit algebraic structures, we address the decision problem by a necessary and sufficient condition, i. e. the disjointness of the reachable subspace and the divergent set. Furthermore, the scheduler synthesis is completed in exponential time, whose bottleneck lies in computing the divergent set, reported for the first time. For the second category, we reduce the decision problem to the existence of invariant subspace, from which the program terminates with probability zero under all schedulers. The invariant subspace is characterized by linear equations and thus can be efficiently computed. The states on that invariant subspace are evidence of the nontermination. Furthermore, the scheduler synthesis is completed by seeking a pattern of finite schedulers that forces all inputs to be terminating with positive probability. The repetition of that pattern yields the desired universal scheduler that forces all inputs to be terminating with probability one. All the problems in the second category are shown, also for the first time, to be solved in polynomial time. Finally, we demonstrate the aforementioned methods via a running example — the quantum Bernoulli factory protocol.

Verification of heat stress mitigation effects by UV parasols using UTCI observations and thermal sensory questionnaire survey

UV parasols are anticipated to serve as a personal method for mitigating heat stress, owing to their portability. Thorough validation of the effectiveness in mitigating heat stress requires participant experiments. We conducted meteorological observations and thermal sensory questionnaires to verify the effect of UV parasol in mitigating heat stress. To emphasize the distinctive features of UV parasols, we contrasted their effects with those of street trees. The meteorological observation findings demonstrated that UV parasols decreased the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) by 3.6 °C compared to direct sunlight, equivalent to approximately 56 % of the reduction achieved by street trees. However, results from the thermal sensory questionnaire survey indicated that the alleviation of heat sensation by UV parasols was only approximately 30 % of that provided by street trees. This limited effectiveness of UV parasols is primarily ascribed to their inability to adequately shield participants' entire bodies from solar radiation. The experimental outcomes obtained in this study are expected to contribute to the reduction of heat stroke incidents and the design of adaptation measures for climate change.

Pilot-scale conditioning of starch-based flocculant for cyanobacterial thickening and dewatering: Mechanism investigation and effect verification

Existing cyanobacteria thickening and dewatering processes in Taihu Lake commonly use conventional inorganic flocculants to condition the cyanobacteria, which poses certain environmental risks. In this study, three different types of typical flocculants, namely polymerized aluminum chloride (PAC), cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) and starch-based flocculant (St-CTA), were selected to investigate their flocculant effects on cyanobacteria and the mechanism of action. The analysis showed that the dosage of St-CTA was low, the flocculation efficiency was high, and it could form flocs with large particle size and high strength. The adsorption and precipitation effect of St-CTA on protein and polysaccharide in flocculated EPS was stronger than that of CPAM and PAC, and it was able to act on the protein structure of EPS favorable for flocculation, improve the hydrophilic effect of S-EPS and LB-EPS, and reduce the content of bound water in EPS from 2.08 to 1.22 g/g DS, thus improving the efficiency of algae-water separation. The free energy and energy barrier of the EPS surface in each layer of the cyanobacterial floc after flocculation by St-CTA were significantly reduced, which resulted in the tendency of the cyanobacterial particles to aggregate and thus flocculate and settle. The pilot validation of St-CTA for cyanobacteria dewatering showed that the water content of algal residue could be reduced to 93.48 %, and the removal efficiencies of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3-N), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) in the air-floated water could be up to 27.3 %, 76.6 %, 27.4 %, and 56.4 %, respectively. In conclusion, this study provides scientific knowledge and demonstration for promoting the use of St-CTA to condition cyanobacterial thickening and dewatering, which is a new idea to solve the problem of cyanobacterial resourcefulness and safe utilization.

Objectives The main limitations and characteristics of the times in domestic academic journal papers on social emotional learning are analyzed from a meta-analytical perspective, and research directions and implications for the development and revitalization of research in the field are presented. Methods This is a research based on systematic literature review, analysis criteria domestic academic journal papers. Results First, the number of publications showed a high rate of increase from the early period to the middle period, and research has decreased over the past three years. Second, the research purpose is a high proportion of empirical studies aimed at program development and effectiveness verification. The gap between study sections did not show much difference in the beginning, but rapidly increased in the middle section. Third, the research subjects were identified in the following order: learners, research products, instructors, and others. Research on learners and instructors is mainly conducted in the mid to late period. Fourth, in terms of school level, the elementary school level study showed the highest figure, and excluding others, it was confirmed to be middle school, high school, university, and infant school in that order. Fifth, research methods were focused on specific research methods, with quantitative research accounting for 44%, in that order: quantitative research, literature research, qualitative research, and mixed research. Conclusions First, social-emotional learning research is expected to become active, and this positive trend should continue. Second, the imbalance between theoretical and empirical research must be improved. Third, following research targeting learners who are consumers of education, research conducted from the perspective of instructors should be expanded. Fourth, there is a need to expand research to various school levels, including preschool levels, by utilizing the results of elementary school level research. Fifth, as with the research purpose, the focus on research methods must be overcome.

Palatability evaluation of orally disintegrating tablets using a visual analog scale in clinical trials.

Visual analog scale (VAS) can be used to evaluate multiple parameters. There have been no reports on the verification of order effects or reproducibility of the VAS method for overall palatability of oral dosage forms. The purpose of this study was to assess the validity of a method for evaluating the palatability of orally disintegrating tablets (ODTs) using a 100-mm VAS. We conducted clinical trials to evaluate the overall palatability, taste, and scent of 3 ODTs (F1, F2, F3) that contained famotidine (20, 10, and 5mg, respectively). The study protocol was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the University of Shizuoka, Japan (No. 21-36). To investigate the intergroup reproducibility of the VAS evaluation, 40 participants were divided into three groups, and each group underwent human gustatory sensation test of F1, F2, and F3, performed using a crossover design with 6 different tasting sequences. To evaluate intragroup reproducibility of the VAS evaluation, the participants assessed the same ODTs twice. The VAS scores for overall palatability followed the same order (F3>F2>F1) in all groups. The VAS scores for the overall palatability of F1, F2, and F3 did not significantly differ between the first and second evaluations. The Kruskal-Wallis test indicated a minimal impact of the assessment order on ODT evaluations. We confirm the reliability and reproducibility of the VAS method for evaluating ODT palatability. The VAS method for assessing ODT palatability provides accurate information and can contribute to the design and manufacture of patient-friendly pharmaceutical products.

Scalable solution for agricultural soil organic carbon measurements using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

Effective verification of soil organic carbon (SOC) improvement interventions through soil carbon sequestration (SCS) requires robust methodologies to measure, report, and verify changes in soil carbon (C) levels. Furthermore, soil C must be monitored over time to ensure that sequestered C is not being re-emitted, thus ensuring the permanence of C removals. The traditional methods for soil C measurement are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and energy-intensive, increasing analysis costs. In this article, we verify the use of a commercially available laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy analyzer, the LaserAg-Quantum, coupled with the recursive feature addition, the gradient-boosted decision trees regression model, and the novelty detection model to predict C in soils. The developed method shows promising performance with an average limit of quantification of 0.75% of C and a precision of 4.10%. Accuracy metrics, including R2, mean absolute error, and root mean square error, yielded values of 0.81, 0.27%, and 0.37% for the validation dataset. Additionally, around 10% of validation samples after the novelty detection model exhibited relative error greater than 30%. Finally, our findings demonstrate the potential of the LaserAg-Quantum process to support measuring SOC in agricultural soils on a large scale.

SNS Users’ Social Comparison Experience Affects Beauty Interest and Impact on Purchasing Behavior

In this study, we confirmed how social comparison experiences of SNS users affect purchasing behavior and empirically analyzed the mediating effect of beauty interest. Based on domestic and international prior research, we reviewed theories on social comparison experience, beauty interest, and purchasing behavior, and derived a research model and hypothesis based on this. Through online survey data collection, 209 copies were finally analyzed. The results of this study showed that upward comparison of social comparison experiences of SNS users had a significant impact on beauty interest. Beauty interest was found to have a significant impact on purchasing behavior, and downward comparison of social comparison experience was found to have a significant impact on purchasing behavior. And in the verification of the mediation effect, interest in beauty was found to be partially mediated by SNS social comparison experience and purchasing behavior. The types and acceptance of information by consumers using SNS are different, especially the degree of acceptance based on social comparison., In order to secure a variety of consumers, we provide objective information and produce various contents through beauty-related SNS, promote communication and exchange with consumers, provide various types of information, and provide advertising and marketing that can attract the attention of consumers with different self-esteem. It has practical implications in that it is helpful in activities.
