Design and Implementation of English to Yorùbá Verb Phrase Machine Translation System

The Yorùbá ethnic group has diverse language speakers across the world, and translating the language to other widely spoken languages must be emphasized. This study aims to develop an English to Yorùbá machine translation system which can translate the English verb phrase text to its Yorùbá equivalent. Words from both languages (Source Language and Target Language) were collected for the verb phrase group in the home domain. Lexical translation was done by assigning values of the matching word in the dictionary. The syntax of the two languages was realized using Context Free Grammar, the rewrite rules were validated with finite state automata. Human evaluation method was used and expert opinion scored. The evaluation shows the system performed better than that of sampled Google translation with over 70% of the responses matching that of the system’s output.

L2 learners’ aural and orthographic phrasal verb knowledge in relation to their listening comprehension

The present study investigated the relationships between aural and orthographic knowledge of L2 phrasal verbs (PVs) and between these and listening comprehension. A total of 188 Chinese university English as a foreign language (EFL) students participated in the study. The research instruments were aural and orthographic PV meaning recall tests and a version of the listening section of the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC). The results indicated that the L2 learners’ orthographic PV knowledge was significantly correlated to their aural PV knowledge. In addition, the former was significantly larger than the latter. Regarding their relationships with L2 listening comprehension, aural PV knowledge was more strongly correlated to listening comprehension than orthographic PV knowledge; and these correlations were both significant. Further, although aural PV knowledge better predicted listening comprehension than orthographic PV knowledge, the differences between their predictive capacities were not large. Based on the findings of the study, implications are suggested.

Teaching Phrasal Verbs and Idiomatic Expressions Through Multimodal Flashcards

This study investigates the effectiveness of various practice modes in learning multiword units, specifically phrasal verbs and idiomatic expressions, through a multimodal online flashcard delivery system that allows students to read, write, listen to, and speak the target multiword vocabulary items. The study, based on data from 229 first-year Japanese EFL university students, investigates how various practice modes in reading, writing, speaking, and listening impact short-term memorization and long-term comprehension of multiword units. The analysis involved multiple regression using random forests to ascertain significance, alongside dominance analysis with relative weights for determining relative importance. Results indicate that while productive practice modes (writing and speaking) are crucial for short-term memorization, register-specific practice modes (speaking and listening) play a significant role in long-term acquisition. This study highlights the importance of integrating multimodal flashcard practice with practical use activities in the classroom to enhance vocabulary learning outcomes. Finally, the results of this study suggest that encouraging students to interact with their target language through multiple modes is meaningful for greater acquisition of multiword vocabulary. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of effective strategies for EFL learners in acquiring multiword vocabulary units and underscores the importance of multimodal approaches in language education.

This study focuses on double subject constructions with the predicate ‘cohta((be) good/like)’, sourced from messenger corpus, finally categorizing them into six types in terms of their syntactic and semantic properties. A significant finding is that 97% of the analyzed sentences fall into type 1 and type 2, with a maximum of three noun phrases being realized. Type 1 and type 2 are notably distinct in several aspects including the semantic traits of noun phrases, the placement of adverbs of degree, the variability in the use of particles, and verb phrase expansion. Although the research is confined to specific conditions, limiting its general applicability to Korean double subject constructions, it can contribute to general Korean syntax by exploring a wide range of cases, including those typically unrealized, and highlighting the frequent syntactic and semantic variations beyond just the particles 'i/ka' and 'un/nun'.

Suffixation in Zhangzhou

Abstract This study is the first to comprehensively describe suffixing morphology in Zhangzhou Southern Min, an under-described Sinitic language spoken in southern China. Suffixation can be derivational in this language to create new lexemes and expand local vocabulary but can be inflectional to convey grammatical information. It can also induce special tone sandhi patterns on either the lexical bases or the suffix itself. The bases that can undergo suffixation are cross-categorical, ranging from nouns, verbs, adjectives, classifiers, noun phrases, verb phrases to adjective phrases. However, the occurrences of suffixes, lexical bases, and derived items are subject to severe constraints from diverse factors of semantics, word class, syntax, phonology, and pragmatics. These reflect that the suffixing is not an isolated morphological event but rather involves systematic and complex interfaces among different linguistic levels. This study is a breakthrough to fill the research gap, while substantially broadening and deepening our knowledge of suffixation as an important morphological device in Sinitic languages. The study also contributes well-attested empirical data to the typology of suffixation in the world’s natural languages while shedding important light on how Sinitic languages and other so-called isolating languages should be better defined from a modern linguistic perspective.

Particle Placement in Hong Kong English: Independence from Great Britain as a Trigger of Structural Change?

In the framework of postcolonial Englishes and their evolutions, Hong Kong English represents an extraordinary case in that the political independence of Hong Kong from the British in 1997 did not result—as in most other cases—in a self-governing political body, but a formal re-integration of Hong Kong into China. As the handover of Hong Kong also marks a drastic linguistic re-orientation, this short-term diachronic paper studies newspaper data from before and after the 1997 handover. With a view to the structural object of investigation, particle placement, the exploration of relevant predictors and their effects in Hong Kong English sheds light on whether and, if so, how the end of British colonial rule has left linguistic traces in particle-placement choices. Using a sample of 322 particle verbs extracted from the South China Morning Post Corpus (SCMPC) and employing random forests, the study reports that pre- and post-handover constructional choices of particle placement are largely compatible with one another. Said choices are mainly guided by principles related to cognition and eurhythmy that—at least in the period observed—appear unlikely to be affected fundamentally by language-external political change.

An Identification of Phrasal Verb in the Movie Entitled “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”

Language has a great effect as an important part of human life that is always used in the daily life by human being. It is important to teach and educate the students as ESL/EFL students about phrasal verbs in order to make them understand and capable in using phrasal verbs especially when they have interaction in English. This study aims to analyze the phrasal verbs, types and the meaning of phrasal verbs that are found in the movie entitled “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”. The instruments of this study are the researcher as the main instrument and a checklist that is used to collect the data. This study used documentation as the method of the data collection. The result of this study showed that there are 102 of phrasal verbs that were found in the movie. There were two types of phrasal verbs that were found in this study, such as transitive phrasal verb (separable phrasal verb and inseparable phrasal verb) and intransitive phrasal verb. Both of the types of the phrasal verbs were found in the movie of this study. Those are consisted of 74 of intransitive phrasal verb and 28 of transitive phrasal verb (14 of separable phrasal verb and 14 of inseparable phrasal verb).

Tone, viewpoint aspect, and imperative mood

We examine the interaction between viewpoint aspect and imperative mood in an under-described and endangered Edoid language of West Africa. In Emai, tone functions both lexically and grammatically. Verbs in citation form, including bisyllabic items, are toneless. In declarative mood Emai distinguishes perfective from imperfective, with perfective assigning high tone to a verb and imperfective assigning low. Imperative mood takes perfective aspect, most clearly evident when an auxiliary or preverb precedes the verb or when the imperative is negated. In simpler imperatives, verb tone is low high. The low tone is conditioned by the juxtaposition of a subject phrase that shows a second person pronoun with high tone and a verb phrase whose initial syllable is high. Across phrasal constitutents, consecutive high tones, as they would have appeared in simpler imperatives, are prohibited. It is the verb phrase initial high syllable that lowers.

Particle verbs versus simplex verbs in Maldivian English

AbstractNotwithstanding current indications that English might soon become the country's dominant L1, the structures of English in the Maldives have—despite laudable exceptions—not yet received sufficient academic attention. The present paper studies the contrast between simplex verbs (e.g. COMPRISE) and their innovative particle–verb alternatives (e.g. COMPRISE of) (a) in a short‐term diachronic database of Maldivian newspaper texts and (b) with the help of acceptability ratings of the forms concerned collected through an online survey. The research questions address the relative frequencies of use of innovative particle verbs as opposed to corresponding simplex verbs, the diachronic variability of these relative frequencies and the degree to which the local speech community accepts innovative verb–particle combinations. While the well‐established simplex verbs constitute the overall dominant structural choices, each of the innovative particle verbs has become more frequent in the course of the 14‐year time period observed. These corpus‐based insights align with the generally high acceptability ratings for the innovative particle–verb constructions evident from the survey data, where young women display the largest degree of acceptance towards the innovative particle verbs.

Study on Orientation Metaphors of Up in Shakespeare’s Plays from a Cognitive Perspective

The large number of ups in Shakespeare's plays has not only conventional usage but also metaphorical usage, especially orientation metaphors. From the aspect of syntactic structure, V+up phrasal verbs combined with verbs are usually metaphorical usages. The types of these verbs include noun-transformed verbs, transitive verbs, and special usages. Based on the metaphorical usage of up, this paper explores the underlying cognitive mechanism behind it, and finds that verbs affect the mapping direction of up, which makes it highlight different metaphorical meanings, and energy transfer between verb phrases. Studying the cognitive mechanism of V+up orientation metaphor helps to further understand the emotions and thoughts of the characters in Shakespeare's plays.

Lexis and Grammar Specifics of the English Language in Africa

This research work deals with the lexical and grammatical features of the English language variant widely used in Africa. The importance of the use of British English is also taken into account, as well as its transformational processes due to the interaction and mutual influence of local dialects on its structure. Examples of neologisms and modified lexical units are given, based on the influence of local culture and the lack of an equivalent in the recipient language. The article pays attention to the grammatical aspects of language in the functioning of phrasal, modal and prepositional verbs, and also reveals the peculiarities of articles and pronouns use due to the influence of autochthonous languages. The aim of the research work is to identify the specifics of the linguistic and cultural adaptation of the English language in Africa and systematize the lexical and grammatical aspects of the English language as the territorial variant type. The choice of working methods is determined by the goals and objectives of the study. In the research work the method of metalinguistic analysis, methods of contextual and definitional analysis, methods of systematization and classification of linguistic material are used. As a result of the work the high productivity of the realities functioning in autochthonous languages in the lexical structure of the English variant in African countries and the lexical borrowings of terms from autochthonous languages are revealed. This trend is also emphasized in the borrowing of entire lexical phrases from the thesaurus of native languages. With regard to the grammatical part, a significant deviation from British English is emphasized. The research work results in such grammatical changes as: the use of auxiliary verbs together with semantic ones; the functioning of a simplified form of modern forms of the verb; the productive use of uncountable nouns in speech in the form of a countable nouns; significant deviations from British English in the process of using articles, personal and possessive pronouns.

Метафоризация детерминативных глагольных композитов с параметрическими компонентами “hoch” и “nieder” в немецком языке

This paper deals with a study of the metaphorical meanings represented by complex verbal phrases with a definitional component of a parametric adjective. The research aims to reveal the associative and imaginative properties of parametric adjectives, on the basis of which metaphorical transfers are formed. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that spatial properties of German adjectives “hoch” and “nieder” are considered for the first time through the prism of figurative perception of space. This inspires us to broaden our knowledge not only about the nominal aspects of these phrases but also how the size attributes of material objects are being restructured in the mindset of a human and how certain abstract phenomena and notions are cognized in a parametric plan. The study detected that the parametric adjectives in the analyzed composite verbs vary largely with the degree of their semantic metaphorization. The core of the imagery of these units contains the re-conceptualization (re-thinking) of spatial relations, which leads to the appearance of new properties and attributes of imagination used to nominate non-spatial sense categories.

TYPES OF PHRASAL VERBS IN “YOUNG SHELDON” SEASON 02 EPISODE 01

Phrasal verbs are the combination of a verb with one or two particles (prepositions or adverbs). Phrasal verbs have four types based on Workman’s theory (1995). Therefore, this present research is aimed at finding the types of phrasal verbs in a series entitled “Young Sheldon”, season 02, episode 01. Qualitative research is applied in order to analyze the data. The result showed that there are ten (10) phrasal verbs. Three (3) phrasal verbs that belong to type 1, five (5) phrasal verb that belong to type 2, and two (2) phrasal verbs that belong to type 4.

Semantic classification of neologisms-conversions

Amorphological-syntactic method of word production known as conversion involves the emergence of new words without altering the fundamental structure ofthe starting word. In addition to being included into anew paradigm, anew word created by conversion also gains anew lexical meaning and grammatical structure, as well as adifferent syntactic function and compatibility. Additionally, there is atypcof homophony that occurs between the primary forms of the derived word and the derived (original) term. This occurs when language units develop that are similar inappearance, sound, and spelling but differ in their typical meaning and belong to separate regions of speech. Though the kind of the consistent sickness is significant,it should be remembered that they can occasionally be confusing and converting. For example, drawdown (n), delay (n), close (n), start (n), suction (n), transfer (n), pass (n). Sometimes the components of verb phrases and talks are connected at the same time. With the conversion ofthe transition connected with the transition fromthe lexico-grammatical class of the verb to the lexico-grammatical class of the current one, the noun gets an integral form as aconsequence of compounding.”. Adverbian Phrase Structure in Karo Language

In this research, adverbial phrases in the Karo language will be discussed. This research aims to find out, analyze and describe phrases in the Karo language. Data collection techniques were carried out using reading techniques and recording techniques or listening notes and analyzed using formal and informal qualitative descriptive analysis techniques. This research examines the structure of adverbial phrases in the Karo language, using qualitative research. Data were analyzed using distributional studies, there were 4 stages, namely data collection, data reduction, data presentation and conclusion of research findings and verification. The research results show that (1) there are three types of phrases found in the Karo language, namely: verb phrases (FV), adjective phrases (F Adj.) and adverb phrases (F. Ad).

Semantic Model for Fragment of Hindi (Part 2)

This paper proposes a formal model for semantic analysis of a fragment of the Hindi language. This paper uses referential noun phrases, transitive and intransitive verb phrases and logical constants to compute the meaning of its sentences generated from the Hindi part-of-speech-tagged corpus features. The paper presents cases of conjunction and negation enriched with idempotent laws that provide semantic computation of simple and complex well-formed formulas. Our system works for any model, with one such model described in our glossary. It deals with the set-theoretic study of essential syntactic categories of Hindi, suggesting the suitability of our rule-based syntactic arrangement and model-based semantic computation by implementing them through an in-house software tool.
