AbstractAsteracantha longifolia Nees. applied in jaundice, dropsy, rheumatism, anasarca etc., show the pharmacognostic characters - spines, having perennial root stocks; bluish-purple 2-lipped flower; leaves - sessile, multichambered thick-walled sclerotic cell, among the epidermal cells of midrib, large flat bunch-shaped calcium carbonate crystals and needle-shaped calcium oxalate crystals in the epidermal cells of lamina and in the cortical cells of midrib respectively; stomata-caryophyllaceous; stomatal index on upper surface: 23.46 (± .47); lower surface: 27.44 (± 52); palisade ratio: 10.23 (± .19) and vein islet number: 25.8 (± .69).

AbstractThe detective characters of Barleria prionitis Linn., a widely used medicinal plant in the Ayurvedic system in India, are: 1. pairs of epidermal cells containing calcium carbonate crystals; 2. Caryophyllaceous stomata; 3. stomatal index on lower and upper surfaces 23.70 and 0.69 respectively; 4. palisade ratio 8.10; 5. vein islet number per sq. mm 9.26; 6. periderm of stem bark subtended by 5-7 layers of tabular collenchyma; 7. phloem ray of stem heterogeneous type I (Jane 1956) with uniseriate and multiseriate rays, 8-16 and 8-25 cells high respectively, 2-3 cell broad; 8. granular and needle shaped calcium oxalate crystals filling up many cells in almost all tissues of barks; 9. in root bark a yellowish cork and sometimes a new phellogen layer separating the outer and inner cortex; 10. root-wood cells containing a blackish brown content.

AbstractPharmacognostic characters of Echolium linneanum Kurz (Var. dentata Cl.) having Ayurvedic application in jaundice, menorrhagia, rheumatism, disuria etc. are: 1. Low shrubby habit with woody root stock, bluish bifid flowers in dense spikes, large imbricate 4-ranked bracts oblong lanceolate lamina tapering at both ends and very short petioles; 2. large oval glandular cells with dense contents, on leaf and stem periphery; 3. wood in stem ring porous with mostly solitary pores and with heterogeneous rays (type I of Jane, 1955) containing micro-crystals; 4. internal phloem; 5. leaves with caryophyllaceous stomata; palisade ratio: 4.07 (0.09), stomatal index: 16.52 (± 1.10) and vein-islet number: 7.00 (0.21); 6. roots with abundant thick-walled fibres in secondary xylem.

Correlation of Tissues in Leaves

Vein-islet numbers and veinlet termination numbers of leaves were found to be inversely proportional to the area of the lamina. The constants obtained by the multiplication of these values are termed the absolute numbers. This value is constant in those leaves where the differentiation of the veins has been completed. This is shown in the developing leaves of five Solanaceous Plants.

The determination of vein islet numbers for 6 species of the genus Asclepias is described. After these numbers are obtained, their reliability as diagnostic aids in the differentiation of closely related species is determined by the application of the “Statistical Quality Control Chart Technique” of industry. By the use of this method, it is possible to distinguish one species from another.

Observations on the Leaves of Species of Viburnum. II

A report is given of further studies on leaves of medicinal Viburnum species. The histology of the leaf of Viburnum trilobum is described. The results of additional studies on the vein islet numbers, palisade ratios, and stomatal indices of Viburnum prunifolium, V. rufidulum, and V. cassinoides are given.

Observations on the Leaves of Several Species of Viburnum

The results of a comparative study of the leaves of Viburnum prunifolium, V. rufidulum, and V. cassionoides are reported. Determinations of the vein islet numbers, palisade ratios and stomatal indexes of the three species are included.
