Mixed method evaluation of factors influencing the adoption of organic participatory guarantee system certification among Vietnamese vegetable farmers

AbstractIn markets where vegetables are commonly cultivated with heavy use of synthetic pesticides, it is particularly important for consumers to be able to identify genuine organic produce. Organic Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS) certification offers smallholder farmers an affordable way to build trust among consumers and secure premium prices for their organic produce. In Vietnam, the demand for vegetables with no, or low, pesticide residues is growing. The attractiveness of PGS certification should increase accordingly, but the number of organic PGS certified farmers in Vietnam are stagnating or even decreasing. The aim of this study is to explain this paradox by investigating the factors that influence the adoption of organic PGS certification among Vietnamese vegetable farmers. We follow a mixed methods approach, combining a qualitative analysis of farmer interviews (n = 62) and a quantitative analysis of a farm survey data (n = 434) using a sample selection model that estimates adoption contingent on farmers’ awareness of PGS certification. Drawing on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology, we found that social relationships and positive attitudes towards farming and the environment drive the adoption of organic PGS. Barriers include insufficient knowledge of organic farming techniques, labour shortages, and ageing farmers. At the systemic level, support by (non-)governmental institutions facilitates adoption, but challenges such as lower yields and limited access to premium markets remain. To promote organic PGS among Vietnamese vegetable farmers, efforts should focus on disseminating organic farming techniques that boost yields, alleviate labour demands, and ensure secure markets for premium-priced organic vegetables.

Assessment of unintentional acute pesticide poisoning among smallholder vegetable farmers in Trinidad and Jamaica

Poisoning caused by pesticides is widely recognized as a major public health problem among smallholder farmers and rural communities, including in the Caribbean. However, a lack of quality data impedes understanding of the problem and hampers the development of effective strategies for its management. To better understand the prevalence of unintentional acute pesticide poisoning (UAPP) in Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica and the pesticides and practices involved, we conducted a cross-sectional survey of 197 and 330 vegetable farmers in Trinidad and Jamaica, respectively. The findings from this study revealed a high incidence of self-reported health effects from occupational pesticide exposure, with 48 and 16% of respondents, respectively, experiencing symptoms of UAPP within the previous 12 months. Furthermore, the substantial proportion of UAPP incidents were associated with a few highly hazardous pesticides (HHPs), particularly lambda-cyhalothrin, acetamiprid, and profenofos in Jamaica, and alpha-cypermethrin, paraquat and lambda-cyhalothrin in Trinidad. Given the well-documented adverse effects of these chemicals on human health, the results of this study should be of significant concern to health authorities in Jamaica and Trinidad. This clearly indicates an urgent need for improved regulation and safer alternatives to the use of HHPs, as well as the promotion of alternatives. We provide policy recommendations and identify alternatives to HHPs for tropical vegetable production.

Long-term effects of a school-based experiential nutrition education intervention

ABSTRACT Nutrition education is essential for the development of healthy eating behaviours among children. Over the past few years, multiple nutrition education programmes have been implemented in primary schools. In the current study, the long-term effects of the experiential nutrition education programme ‘Learning Street’ are assessed. This 3-week programme comprises a classroom-based introduction lesson, a visit to a fruit or vegetable (FV) farmer, a cooking workshop, and a joint eating moment. The programme is designed for children aged 8–12 years. Questionnaire outcomes of 11-to-12-year-old children (n = 87) who participated in a Learning Street programme two years before were compared to those of a control group (n = 102) with similar demographics. The questionnaire included questions on children’s FV knowledge, liking, intake, and attitude, as well as their general health attitude, cooking self-efficacy, and cooking attitude. There was a significant difference in FV attitude (Cohen’s d = 0.55; 95% CI: −0.69 to −0.21) and general health attitude (Cohen’s d = 0.37; 95% CI: −0.56 to −0.07) between the intervention and the control groups. For general health attitude, the difference was only significant for a subgroup of children (n = 25) who had participated in two Learning Street programmes. The findings suggest that regularly exposing children to experiential nutrition education may have long-term benefits.

Effects of gender and agricultural cooperatives on biodiversity conservation farming practices: evidence from an emerging economy

PurposeThis study explores the effects of gender and participation in agricultural cooperatives on biodiversity conservation farming practices in vegetable production.Design/methodology/approachThis study used data collected from a survey of 627 vegetable farmers in Viet Nam and employed the Ordered Probit regression model to examine the effects of gender and participation in agricultural cooperatives on biodiversity conservation farming practices.FindingsWe find that female vegetable farmers are more likely to conduct biodiversity conservation farming practices than male farmers. This gender difference is, however, removed when participation in agricultural cooperatives is controlled, suggesting that agricultural cooperatives effectively facilitate biodiversity conservation farming practices.Research limitations/implicationsIt is noted that our study is not free from some limitations. First, we conducted our study on vegetable farmers only. The biodiversity conservation practices in vegetable cultivation might be different from other types of farming. Future studies should be conducted with other types of agricultural cultivation. Second, we do not have enough data to explain why female farmers are more likely to adopt biodiversity conservation practices than male farmers. Future studies should capture biological and social aspects of gender differences to address this limitation.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the literature on biodiversity conservation by presenting empirical evidence on the effects of gender and agricultural cooperatives. Participation in agricultural cooperatives is revealed to facilitate the adoption of biodiversity conservation practices. In addition, we find that the education of farmers, the number of years that farmers have been living in the local area and the quality of land and water are positively related to the adoption of biodiversity conservation practices in vegetable production.

Assessing on-site plastics fragmentation: Linking macroplastics litter to microplastics pollution in vegetable fields

This study proposes a novel approach to determine whether farmers act as a pollution source of microplastics through macroplastic mismanagement or if they are temporary hosts of in-transit microplastics. Using a case-study approach, it was hypothesized that 90 % of soil microplastics would trace back to macroplastic waste mismanaged by farmers. To determine the amount of soil microplastics, linear transects were established and microplastic litter was counted and classified. Additionally, composite soil samples were used to count and colour-classify microplastics. The Kendall correlation was used to differentiate between the colour ranks of macro- and microplastics to discriminate between plastic on-site fragmentation or exogenous plastic pollution. For this, 37 vegetable farms in central Chile were assessed after the growing season. Farms showed lower microplastic counts than previously reported for similar productive conditions (3.68 ± 3.28 u/kg). A median colour correlation of 0.43 (IQR = 0.18–0.55) was observed between macro- and microplastics. Only in 25 % of the studied fields did on-site plastic fragmentation predominate over exogenous plastic pollution. The applied approach is simple to implement and does not require specialized laboratory equipment. We hope that the proposed methodology will serve in environmental monitoring to evaluate adherence to good agricultural practices and to guide pollution-prevention measures.

Economic Analysis of kharif Vegetable Cultivation in Palghar District of Maharashtra State, India

The study was undertaken with the specific objective to workout costs, returns and profitability in vegetables production of a sample of 90 vegetable cultivators of three tahsil of Palghar viz. Vasai, Palghar and Dahanu during 2023.Simple statistical tools such as arithmetic mean, average, percentage, ratios and frequency distribution were worked out. For working out cost of production, standard cost concepts viz., cost-A1, cost-A2 cost-B1, cost-B2, cost-C1, cost-C2, cost-C3 were used. The cost of cultivation of kharif brinjal, okra, cowpea, tomato, cucumber, bottle gourd and bitter gourd was Rs.130880, Rs.172317, Rs.74835, Rs.145956, Rs.166815, Rs.220387and Rs.209361for respectively. The gross returns obtained from kharif brinjal, okra, cowpea, tomato, cucumber, bottle gourd and bitter gourd was Rs.141240, Rs.271560, Rs.77532, Rs.280280, Rs.227850, Rs.337506 and Rs.345345 respectively. The benefit-cost ratio for kharif brinjal, okra, cowpea, tomato, cucumber, bottle gourd and bitter gourd was 1.08, 1.58, 1.04, 1.92, 1.37, 1.53 and 1.65 respectively. The promising benefit-cost ratios indicate a favorable environment for vegetable farming in Palghar, suggesting that with strategic crop selection and enhanced agricultural practices, the future of vegetable cultivation in the region is likely to be both profitable and sustainable.

Income Analysis and Break-Even Point of Mustard (Brassica juncea L.) Business: A Case Study of the Lubuk Makmur and Tani Makmur Farmer Groups in Mugirejo Village, Samarinda City, Indonesia

Horticulture is a field that has great potential to be developed in the agricultural sector, because it has advantages that are much higher than other commodities, such as high economic value and significant added value. The prospects for farming in Samarinda City have good prospects and most vegetable farmers rely on income from mustard farming. The research aims to analyze production costs and receipts as well as income from mustard greens farming in Mugirejo Village, Sungai Pinang District, Samarinda City. This research was conducted for four months starting from March 2024 to June 2024. The research was conducted at the Lubuk Makmur and Tani Makmur Farmers Groups, Mugirejo Village, Sungai Pinang District, Samarinda City. The method used in sampling was purposive sampling with a sample size of 22 respondents. The data analysis method used was an analysis of production costs, revenues, income, and BEP. The results of this study indicate that the duration of mustard cultivation from land preparation to harvesting in one mustard planting season is 40 days, with a planting area of ​​0.755 m2 or 0.034 ha, farmers spend production costs to run mustard farming activities of IDR 1.269.916,63 respondents-1 planting season-1 or IDR 40.976.680,00 respondents-1 planting season-1 ha-1. The average income received by mustard farmers is IDR2.642,471.59 respondents-1 planting season-1 or IDR 85.419.034,09 respondents-1 planting season-1 ha-1. The average income received by farmers in running mustard farming in the research area is IDR1.372.554,96 respondents-1 planting season-1 or IDR39.994.979,00 respondents-1 planting season-1 ha-1. The BEP selling price and BEP production volume of mustard farming in Mugirejo Village are respectively IDR8,696.39 kg-1 and 81.20 kg-1. The BEP value is smaller than the average selling price and production values, so it can be concluded that mustard farming is profitable.

Performance of Cambodia’s made vegetable transplanter for two-wheel tractors under tillage conditions

<p>In Cambodia, vegetable crops are planted by hand, making it hard to meet local market demands. However, this production can be boosted by using a mechanical transplanter with two-wheel tractors to cut input costs, when introduced to farmers, while production and productivity can be accelerated. Thus, this research aimed to (1) evaluate the working performance of a locally made vegetable transplanter against manual planting and (2) compare plant survival rates. The study included fabrication, testing, modification, and experiments with farmers, starting from January 2023 to July 2024. The transplanter was fabricated, tested, and improved by the Royal University of Agriculture. Then, two experiments were carried out with a vegetable farming community in Tram Kak District, Takeo Province, Cambodia. Tomato was selected for the testing, choosing seedlings aged four weeks. The randomized complete block design (RCBD) was applied for both experiments with two treatments, manual planting and transplanter use, replicated four times. The results show that the working performance of the transplanter was six times faster than manual planting. Its speed, total field capacity, and planting rate were 1.03 km/h, 0.052 ha/h, and 27 plants/min, respectively, but missed planting was about 4%. Within-row spacing was similar (0.58 m), while using the transplanter made the plants incline at a steeper angle (63°), but could save 81.9% of time, when compared to manual planting. Both treatments had 100% plant survival rates evaluated one week after the transplanting. In short, using the transplanter can save both time and labor, but further assessment should be made with more kinds of fruit vegetable based on different seedling ages, so that the specifications can be confirmed, which is good for actual adoption for farmers.<strong></strong></p>

The Role of Agricultural Technology in Attaining Food Security among Small Farmers in Char Area in Mymensingh District

Farmers in the char areas of Bangladesh are frequently affected by food insecurity due to their low engagement in modern agriculture such as less use of modern agricultural technology. This study evaluates the socio-demographic characteristics of the sample farmers to assess their nutritional status and the factors influencing char dwellers' dietary diversity. Survey data were collected from 70 households, and focus group discussions were conducted using a semi-structured questionnaire from Nilokhiya char under the Mymensingh District of Bangladesh. An OLS regression model was used to estimate the influence of socioeconomic characteristics of sample households on the decision on factors influencing dietary diversity. The farming type of the farmers is another concern of this study where results show that 90% of farmers in the char areas rely on rice and vegetable farming, whereas more than 60% of the farmers are also involved in livestock and poultry farming at the same time. The nutritional status of char farmers shows that their diet includes a variety of foods but is deficient insufficient protein and healthy fats, which could have an impact on their overall nutrition. Cereals are a staple in the diet, as indicated by the high consumption rate (97.1%) and the substantial average intake (2.30 kg/day). Every household consumes fruits, though in smaller quantities (0.28 kg/day). Eggs are less frequently consumed (57.1%) despite a higher intake (2.64 kg/day). Dietary diversity has a strong positive correlation with supply (.913) at a 1 % significant level which means that efficient supply chains minimize delays, reduce spoilage, and ensure a continuous flow of food to markets to ensure food security. A positive correlation with total income (.373) leads to a higher total income also supports greater dietary diversity. Credit was significant at a 5% level (.267) indicating that a 1 % increase in credit leads to an increase in dietary diversity by 267%. On the contrary, Experience has a negative relationship with dietary diversity which means that experience does not influence food security. Lack of transport and communication, environmental hazards, and natural disasters are the most significant problems faced by the farmers in the char area.

The article presents the results of the analysis of key indicators characterizing the development of the protected soil vegetable growing industry in the Central Asian Republic. Based on the analysis carried out, exponential forecasting of changes in key indicators of the vegetable growing industry for a three-year period was carried out. An integrated score assessment of the categorization of the regions of the region under consideration according to the dynamics of the development of protected soil vegetable growing was carried out. The priority branch of the protected soil vegetable farming has been established, the features of its functioning at various stages of the production cycle have been determined, provided that the desire for an expanded type of reproduction is realized. The current measures of state and regional support for producers of vegetable products are analyzed, the specifics of providing such support measures are established, a process flaw regarding the organization of the production cycle is revealed when attracting state support measures at the stage its implementation. A hypothesis has been put forward about the possibility of improving state support by distributing it differently relative to the production cycle. Based on the analysis, specific ways have been identified for the implementation of scientific research to determine the features of the functioning of specialized vegetable growing enterprises and further develop methods for integrating such features with government support to form an effective concept for improving the state development of protected soil vegetable growing.

Determination of natural radioactivity levels in soil samples from irrigated vegetable farming land in and around Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Soil samples were collected from vegetable agricultural areas in and around Addis Ababa, and their levels of radioactivity were measured. Gamma spectrometry with high-purity germanium detector was used to quantify radioactivity level. The average concentration of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K were 32.8±2.1, 62.4±4.4, and 544.3±23.3Bqkg-1 respectively. The mean values of 232Th and 40K are higher, whereas the value of 226Ra is comparable with world average values. Radiological hazard indices, including radium equivalent activity (Raeq), absorbed dose rate (Dr), outdoor annual effective dose equivalent (Deff), external hazard index (Hex), internal hazard index (Hin), and gamma radiation representative level index (Iγ), were calculated based on the activity concentration of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K. The mean values were 163.9Bqkg-1, 78.7 nGy h-1, 0.10mSv y-1, 0.44, 0.53, and 0.60 respectively. All indices are lower than global recommended limit values. These results revealed that radiation hazard due to radionuclides in the soil of the study area is insignificant.

A Capability Indicator for Family Farms in the Global North – Concept and Test from Switzerland

ABSTRACT Amartya Sen’s capability approach suggests assessing people’s well-being by examining whether they are able to do and be what they value, instead of merely looking at their income. People’s well-being is the basic theme of social sustainability. This study intends to operationalise social sustainability by developing a capability indicator for family farms in the Global North. Therefore, this study develops a conceptual approach that was tested through a sample of 555 Swiss fruit and vegetable farm managers. The managers were asked four questions on consumption options and six questions on decision making on their farms, and answers were aggregated in two different ways: first, simply by summing up the response values, and second, by weighting the response values based on their regressors to explain the probability of the farm being taken over. The data were analysed descriptively regarding correlations between the questions and by an ordered logit analysis. The results indicated that both the simple and the weighed capability indicators were good predictors of the perception of whether the farm would be taken over by the next generation and thus of an aspect of social sustainability. This implies that, for example, policy measures to reduce the environmental impacts of farming have a negative side effect that may have been underestimated so far, as they reduce the capability of the farm managers. The capability of farmers at both production and consumption levels is relevant to their well-being.

Covid-19 Led Vulnerability of Vegetable Production and Marketing: Insights from Marginal Farmers of Odisha

The global economic crisis due to COVID 19 pandemic has revealed how the supply chain of agricultural marketing has been devastated in general and vegetable farming in particular. So, this paper tried to examine the impact of COVID-19 on the vulnerability of vegetable farmers in Odisha. To execute the study, data were collected from vegetable growers through a direct personal interview method. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and a multi-variable regression model to evaluate the vulnerability of farmers as well as to identify the factors affecting the extent of vulnerability. Survey findings indicate that 71 per cent of farmers were able to sell 60-80 per cent of their harvested product in the market and the rest products were wasted. The prime reasons for the losses are lockdown, lack of buyers in the markets and fear of coronavirus spreading among consumers as well as producers. The empirical study is evident that significant factors such as production quantum, land cultivated, and having personal vehicle have negative impact on the vulnerability extent of farmers. The study got its originality, as it considers marginal farmers with both rented and owned forms of land holdings.

Utilization of Media and Institutional Support for Urban Farming in Pekanbaru City

Urban farming is important in supporting food security in urban areas. This study aims to identify the use of communication media in implementing urban farming and supporting institutions in the application of urban farming. This research was conducted using a survey method with samples selected in tiers representing each extension institution of farmer women groups. Furthermore, data were gathered from interviews and FGDs. The results showed that accessing information and communication behavior was in the excellent category with a score of 4.65. There are different types of facilities that are currently used by farmers to access information, namely smartphones where the extension workers always provide information related to farming, and printed extension media such as brochures, flyers, and books related to vegetable farming. Farmer knowledge about information sources is also in an excellent category. They know the types of information sources and how to get information according to their needs that comes from reliable and accurate sources. Farmers received full support from local leaders and the government through the food crops and fisheries office of the city of Pekanbaru with regular counseling held by extension workers, and socialization related to urban farming. A Current View on Strawberry Production Practices and Trends in the Northeastern United States and Canada

Strawberries (Fragaria ×ananassa) are an important crop for diversified fruit and vegetable farms in the northeastern United States as well as in Ontario and Québec, Canada. The industry in this cold climate region differs greatly from that in the major strawberry-producing states of Florida and California because strawberries typically represent a smaller share of total farm revenue and are sold primarily through retail markets. In recent years, strawberry production and marketing methods in the northeastern United States and Canada have diversified to meet the unique challenges of the region, including regional demand, extended seasons, and management of an increasingly challenging pest and disease complex. In 2020, we distributed an online survey to 163 commercial producers to obtain a snapshot of marketing and production practices used on strawberry-producing farms in this region and to assess research and outreach needs to better serve the industry. We conducted in-depth case study interviews with a small number of producers after the survey. We found that traditional June-bearing strawberry production continues to represent >50% of production, and that most fruit are grown conventionally. Day-neutral strawberry production was reported by an increased number of producers in New York as well as in Canada, and a higher percentage of day-neutral growers, compared to that of June-bearing producers, reported using protected culture. Botrytis (gray mold), weeds, and leaf spots were the top overall pest pressures indicated by growers. Survey respondents preferred written outreach materials and on-farm meetings to obtain information. Integrated pest management, organic production, and cultivar performance were the top priorities for subjects. The survey and interviews also provided information about the most common strategies for winter protection, frequency of pesticide applications, lifespan of plantings, and other current strawberry production practices in the region. Our survey results may be used by researchers and extension professionals to better serve this diversifying industry.

Value-added Finance Use Animal Waste as Conversion Fertilizer for Vegetable Farming Groups in the West Sinjai Region, Indonesia

Agriculture plays a crucial role globally, and addressing the sustainable management of livestock waste is a growing concern. Converting animal waste into fertiliser not only supports organic farming but also offers a sustainable solution for managing livestock waste. This study aims to evaluate the conversion of fertiliser to animal waste and its potential to generate higher economic value for vegetable farmers in the West Sinjai region. By applying theoretical concepts learned in academic settings to real-world problems, this research aims to enhance knowledge regarding the economic benefits of fertiliser conversion. Additionally, it serves as a valuable reference for future studies on the economic impact of using animal waste as a substitute for chemical fertilisers. The primary goal is to determine the financial benefits and added value of using animal waste in place of chemical fertilisers. This research follows a quantitative descriptive approach, using both primary and secondary data. The population consists of secondary crop farmers in the West Sinjai region, and the sample includes six groups of vegetable farmers in Gunung Perak Village. The results indicate that converting fertiliser to animal waste significantly enhances the economic value for farmers in the West Sinjai region, particularly in Gunung Perak Village. This improvement is due to the cost savings from using animal waste compared to chemical fertilisers per production unit, ultimately leading to higher profits for the farmers.

Socioeconomic impact of livestock production in Gokuleshowor, Baitadi, Nepal

The study was carried out at the Baitadi district's Dilashaini rural municipality. The study area was primarily based on agriculture. Farmers in the studied area adopted a complex type of farming system that includes livestock, crops, fruits, forestry, and vegetable farming. This study was mainly conducted to identify key problems faced by farmers and the socioeconomic importance of livestock farming. Semi-structured questionnaires were used to randomly choose respondents for a key informant interview. 61 households were randomly selected without the replacement method. The results showed that most of the households were headed by men (52 households). The primary occupation was agriculture (72%), followed by business (22%). A benefit-to-cost ratio of 1.65 was discovered. Milk was priced at 48.08 rupees per liter. We found feeding management to be the main problem. Farmers invest a huge amount of their income in managing feed for livestock. Natural breeding was largely prevalent in the study area (96%); artificial insemination was still rare. In the studied area, the dairy sector was profitable, so it emphasized improved breeding programs, improved feeding management, and the establishment of well-managed dairy cooperatives, which helped in the development of the rural economy and the lifestyle of farmers.

Simultaneous Silencing of Gut Nucleases and a Vital Target Gene by Adult dsRNA Feeding Enhances RNAi Efficiency and Mortality in Ceratitis capitata.

Ceratitis capitata, known as the Mediterranean fruit fly (Medfly), is a major dipteran pest significantly impacting fruit and vegetable farming. Currently, its control heavily relies mainly on chemical insecticides, which pose health risks and have effects on pollinators. A more sustainable and species-specific alternative strategy may be based on double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) delivery through feeding to disrupt essential functions in pest insects, which is poorly reported in dipteran species. Previous reports in Orthoptera and Coleoptera species suggested that dsRNA degradation by specific nucleases in the intestinal lumen is among the major obstacles to feeding-mediated RNAi in insects. In our study, we experimented with three-day adult feeding using a combination of dsRNA molecules that target the expression of the ATPase vital gene and two intestinal dsRNA nucleases. These dsRNA molecules were recently tested separately in two Tephritidae species, showing limited effectiveness. In contrast, by simultaneously feeding dsRNA against the CcVha68-1, CcdsRNase1, and CcdsRNase2 genes, we observed 79% mortality over seven days, which was associated with a decrease in mRNA levels of the three targeted genes. As expected, we also observed a reduction in dsRNA degradation following RNAi against nucleases. This research illustrates the potential of utilizing molecules as pesticides to achieve mortality rates in Medfly adults by targeting crucial genes and intestinal nucleases. Furthermore, it underscores the importance of exploring RNAi-based approaches for pest management.

Dumpsites farmers' awareness of physicochemical properties of dumpsites soil in two agro-ecological zones, Ghana.

In Ghana, widespread backyard farming on arable land with refuse waste is driven by the enriched physicochemical properties of dumpsite soils, supporting crop growth. However, the enhanced levels of heavy metals have raised concerns among policymakers focusing on the environmental challenges posed by dumpsites soil. The purpose of the study was to assess the awareness of dumpsites farmers on soil physicochemical properties and dangers posed by accumulated toxic heavy metals. A total of 100 vegetable farmers were interviewed in three communities to gauge their awareness of dumpsite soil properties and potential contamination. A semi-structured questionnaire was purposively used to solicit for information from farmers. Chi-square (χ2) test of homogeneity was used to ascertain if there was any uniformity among respondents in the different communities studied. The findings showed that the level of education of the famers had no relationship (p = 0.21) with farmers' educational level. Dumpsites farmers' knowledge on soil physicochemical properties had a significant (p = 0.02) relationship with farmers' awareness of toxic elements in dumpsites. Farmers' soil physicochemical knowledge further had a significant (p = 0.03) relationship with their awareness that, plants on dumpsites absorb toxic elements. Furthermore, ailments commonly associated with heavy metals as reported by farmers included skin rashes, cough, diarrhoea, and cholera. It can be concluded that although dumpsite farmers exhibit some awareness about the physicochemical properties of their soil and the risks associated with toxic heavy metals, there is still room for improvement. Despite education levels not significantly impacting awareness, targeted intervention programs are necessary to enhance understanding and address this pressing issue effectively. We recommend an implementation of a tailored educational programs for dumpsite farmers to enhance understanding of soil properties and heavy metal risks. There should be improved access to soil testing and interpretation to enable informed decision-making among farmers. Foster collaborations among stakeholders for sustainable waste management, soil remediation, and health monitoring to mitigate heavy metal contamination are also recommended.
