Vase solutions containing 25 50 75 and 100 mg/L aluminium sulphate (Al2(SO4)3) in combination with 225 mg/L 8-hydroxyquinoline sulphate (8-HQS) and 4% sucrose were tested for prolonging vase life of Dendrobium Sonia âEia Sakulâ. The purpose of this trial was to determine the best vase solution to extend the vase life of Dendrobium Sonia âEia Sakulâ. The results showed that the combination of 25 mg/L Al2(SO4)3 plus 225 mg/L 8-HQS and 4% sucrose produced was the longest vase life (14.4 days). Whereas the single application of Al2(SO4)3 or 8-HQS resulted in shorter vase life compared with those combinations (8.4-11.3 days and 10.9 days, respectively). The comparison of Al2(SO4)3 in various condition showed that higher concentrations resulted in longer vase life. On the other hand, the combination of Al2(SO4)3 plus 225 mg/L 8-HQS and 4% sucrose showed shorter vase life in higher concentration. A study of lipid peroxidation as measured by malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration after 7 days on the treatments of only Al2(SO4)3 in all concentrations showed higher MDA concentration than those all combinations of Al2(SO4)3 plus HQS and sucrose. In conclusion, the vase life of Dendrobium Sonia âEia sakulâ was longer in the vase solution containing combinations of aluminium sulphate, 8-hydroxyquinoline sulphate and sucrose and these observations may be related with MDA content.
