Inservice!

Inservice education on mainstreaming for regular classroom teachers has been delivered in diverse formats by a variety of personnel. One form of inservice training is incumbent upon teachers in Kansas, who have a state mandate to complete a special education course for renewal of certification. This article describes one instructor's delivery of a graduate-level course on exceptional learners in regular classrooms as well as the positive effects enjoyed by participating school personnel, many of whom entered this inservice training with negative attitudes.

Datastream—the use of a business databank

A survey of the use of Datastream in twenty-one firms, in the City of London, is presented. The service was found to be used by a variety of personnel of different backgrounds age and status but not by librarians or information scientists. Some facilities for manipulating data were not highly used and this was thought to be related to the relatively low use of manuals and other documentation.

Functions of dietetic personnel in ambulatory care1

By observation in ten ambulatory care settings and a literature review, the author found that dietetic service is being delivered by a variety of personnel--trained lay aides, nurses, and physicians, as well as professional dietitians. Employers in such settings agree that nutrition is an important component of total health care but question whether it must necessarily be delivered by dietetic personnel. The dietitian, to survive, must justify on a cost-benefit basis the unique value of her competency to the outcome of patient care. Sixty-eight nutritional care functions, appropriate for dietitians and/or dietetic technicians working in ambulatory care organizations, are identified and listed. In contrast to hospital-based, in-patient care, the author concludes that performance of these functions requires greater interest in helping others and greater flexibility, and she sees such service as the wave of the future.

SCANNING THE SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT-A WORKING MODEL.

If scanning is to be employed, the process must be a workable one. It must be easy to use, teachable to a variety of personnel, and capable of generating information that is both useful and substantively accurate. The model presented herein is an attempt to meet those criteria. Both the genesis and the continuing rationale of micro unit planning are found in the inherent value accruing to an organization from coherent decision making. Faced with a social environment that changes exponentially and with a need for coordinated responses to social, political and economic stimuli, scanning is a necessary first step in the process of coordinating the actions of the micro unit with the demands of the macro environment.

Community mental health center staffing patterns.

A survey of funded applications for federal staffing grants from 80 community mental health centers reveals that of 3,830 full-time positions projected by the centers, 1,613 or 42% were listed as nonprofessional mental health personnel. The study was conducted to help the planners of new centers benefit from the projected staffing patterns of existing centers, and to gather information about the use of manpower and the types of personnel employed in the centers′ variety of services. In many respects, each center is unique because it serves a distinct community. However, all share many features in common, including the use of a variety of personnel. Staffing needs for each of the five basic services and specialized services are analyzed by categories of centers and communities served.

Research in Planned Learning Programs and the Science of Behavior

In rbcent years and especially since World War II an increased interest has developed in studies of the modifiability of human behavior. The investi gations into the changing of knowledge and attitudes through planned experiences* are well known. During the war numerous learning programs were devised and used effectively by the armed forces for the training of a variety of personnel with the result that our conception of the possibility of guiding development through planned experiences has been greatly enriched.
