Halogenated Cholesterol Alters the Phase Behavior of Ternary Lipid Membranes.

Eukaryotic plasma membranes exhibit nanoscale lateral lipid heterogeneity, a feature that is thought to be central to their function. Studying these heterogeneities is challenging since few biophysical methods are capable of detecting domains at submicron length scales. We recently showed that cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) can directly image nanoscale liquid-liquid phase separation in extruded liposomes due to its ability to resolve the intrinsic thickness and electron density differences of ordered and disordered phases. However, the intensity contrast between these phases is poor compared with conventional fluorescence microscopy and is thus both a limiting factor and a focal point for optimization. Because the fundamental source of intensity contrast is the spatial variation in electron density within the bilayer, lipid modifications aimed at selectively increasing the electron density of one phase might enhance the ability to resolve coexisting phases. To this end, we investigated model membrane mixtures of DPPC/DOPC/cholesterol in which one hydrogen of cholesterol's C19 methyl group was replaced by an electron-rich halogen atom (either bromine or iodine). We characterized the phase behavior as a function of composition and temperature using fluorescence microscopy, Förster resonance energy transfer, and cryo-EM. Our data suggest that halogenated cholesterol variants distribute approximately evenly between liquid-ordered and liquid-disordered phases and are thus ineffective at enhancing the intensity difference between them. Furthermore, replacing more than half of the native cholesterol with halogenated cholesterol variants dramatically reduces the size of the membrane domains. Our results reinforce how small changes in the sterol structure can have a large impact on the lateral organization of membrane lipids.

Long-term variations in peak electron density and temperature of mesopause region: Dependence on solar, geomagnetic, and atmospheric activities, long-term trends

The paper overviews the main results of the study of long-term variations in characteristics of the upper neutral atmosphere and ionosphere, obtained during the implementation of Russian Science Foundation Project No. 22-17-00146 “Experimental and theoretical study of the coupling neutral and ionized components of Earth’s atmosphere”. We study and compare long-term variations in the peak electron density and temperature of the mesopause region. Their dependences on solar, geomagnetic, and atmospheric activity, as well as long-term trends, are analyzed. The analysis is based on data from long-term measurements with the ISTP SB RAS complex of instruments. The peak electron density (NmF2) data was acquired with the Irkutsk analog automatic ionospheric station for 1955–1996 and the Irkutsk digital ionosonde DPS-4 for 2003–2021. The atmospheric temperatures at mesopause altitudes (Tm) were obtained from spectrometric observations of the hydroxyl molecule emission (OH (6-2) band, 834.0 nm, emission maximum height ~87 km) for 2008–2020. The analysis uses solar (F10.7) and geomagnetic (Ap) activity indices, as well as data on variations in the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI). The study employs simple and multiple linear regression methods. Annual average NmF2 values are found to be predominantly controlled by changes in solar flux. Analysis of regression residuals shows that the largest deviations from regression (for both simple and multiple regression) are observed in years near the maxima of solar cycles 19 (1956–1959) and 22 (1989–1991). Annual average temperature variability in the mesopause region correlates with changes in the SOI index: day-to-day variability exhibits a positive correlation with SOI; and intra-diurnal variability, a negative correlation with SOI. No significant relationship was found between year-to-year variations in the NmF2 and Tm variability.

Analysis and control of the equilibrium position in bare electrodynamic tether systems

This study focuses on the calculation of the equilibrium position of the bare electrodynamic tether (BEDT) and the implementation of stable control during the de-orbiting process. A novel method for calculating the equilibrium position of the BEDT system is proposed, utilizing integral variable substitution. This approach provides an analytical expression for the equilibrium position, thereby addressing the limitations of numerical curve-fitting methods and facilitating further dynamic analysis and controller design. To address the influence of variations in geomagnetic field strength and electron density on the tether attitude during deorbiting, a sliding mode controller based on prescribed performance is designed to stabilize the BEDT around its equilibrium position by adjusting the tether length. This adjustment simultaneously regulates angular momentum and current on the tether. In contrast to conventional current switching methods, the proposed strategy effectively mitigates undesired transient responses and additional system disturbances, and accurately stabilizing the BEDT system around the equilibrium position. Numerical simulations show that the analytical equilibrium calculations closely match the nonlinear model, with an error margin of less than 5%. Additionally, the tether length adjustment strategy successfully stabilizes the system around the equilibrium position, achieving an angular deviation of less than 0.2 degrees and enhanced deorbit efficiency compared to the current switching control method.

Unique features of plasmonic absorption in ultrafine metal nanoparticles: unity and rivalry of volumetric compression and spill-out effect

Abstract We present a solution to a longstanding challenge in nanoplasmonics and colloid chemistry: the anomalous optical absorption of noble metal nanoparticles in the ultrafine size range of 2.5–10 nm, characterized by a rapid long-wavelength shift in plasmon resonance as the particle size increases. Our investigation delves into the impact of alterations in electron density along the radial direction of nanoparticles and the resulting variations in dielectric constants on the spectral positioning of the plasmon resonance. We explore the interplay of the spill-out effect, volumetric compression, and their combined impact in different experimental conditions on electron density variation within the particle volume and its blurring at the particle boundary. The latter effectively forms a surface layer with altered dielectric constants and a size-independent extent. As particle size decreases, the influence of the surface layer becomes more pronounced, especially when its extent is comparable to the particle radius. These findings are specific to ultrafine plasmonic nanoparticles and highlight their unique properties.

Discharge characteristics of silicon-based DC Helium microplasmas: comparison between Through Silicon Via and closed cavity type micro-reactors

Abstract This paper explores the microfabrication process of plasma reactors, from the production of micro-reactors to the addition of through silicon vias (TSV) using proprietary etching techniques and on site cleanroom facilities. The investigation focuses on both newly fabricated closed and open-cavity micro-hollow cathode discharge (MHCD) reactors, with particular emphasis on electrical and optical diagnostics to characterize their plasma properties. All experiments, including those on closed-cavity reactors, were specifically conducted for this study under identical conditions to ensure a rigorous comparison between reactor types. When electrical diagnostics were carried out in helium at various pressures, interesting phenomena such as the evolution of voltage breakdown were observed. These diagnostics also provided new insights into the impact of surface electrode and overall geometry properties and pressure on reactor performance. Additional investigation into instability mechanisms revealed self-pulsing oscillations, with different reactor types having different oscillation amplitudes for similar operating conditions. Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) emerged as a strong tool for spatial plasma analysis, revealing consistent gas temperature distributions across reactor diameters. The Inglis-Teller series provided an estimate of the upper limit of electron density, while the Stark broadening analysis of H α offered valuable insights into electron density variations, particularly in the self-pulsing regime.

A New Proton‐Hydrogen‐Electron Transport Model for Simulating Optical Emissions From Proton Aurora and Comparison With Ground Observations

AbstractEnergetic proton precipitation from the magnetosphere plays an important role in the magnetosphere‐ionosphere‐thermosphere coupling and energy transfer. Proton precipitation causes hydrogen emissions, such as Hβ (486.1 nm), and also triggers the excitation of other emission lines such as the blue‐line (427.8 nm) and the green‐line (557.7 nm). In light of the growing availability of ground‐based proton auroral measurements in recent years, we revisit the proton auroral modeling in this study, with more focus on the application for interpreting ground observations. An accurate simulation of these optical emissions requires a comprehensive understanding of particle transport and collisions in the upper atmosphere, where the simultaneous consideration of precipitating protons, newly generated energetic hydrogen atoms, and secondary electrons is critical. For this purpose, we couple a 3D Monte‐Carlo proton transport model and an electron transport model. The integrated model framework can compute the emission rates of most major auroral emission lines/bands resulting from proton precipitation, along with self‐consistent calculation of the ionospheric electron density variations. The model results show improved agreement with ground optical observations in terms of the Hβ yield and the green‐to‐Hβ ratio compared to previous model studies. Our new model is a valuable tool for quantifying excitation and ionization due to proton aurora. It has the potential to leverage ground observations to infer precipitating conditions at high altitudes and even for studying magnetospheric activity.

Exploring the time variability of the solar wind using LOFAR pulsar data

High-precision pulsar timing is highly dependent on the precise and accurate modelling of any effects that can potentially impact the data. In particular, effects that contain stochastic elements contribute to some level of corruption and complexity in the analysis of pulsar-timing data. It has been shown that commonly used solar wind models do not accurately account for variability in the amplitude of the solar wind on both short and long timescales. In this study, we test and validate a new, cutting-edge solar wind modelling method included in the enterprise software suite (widely used for pulsar noise analysis) through extended simulations. We use it to investigate temporal variability in LOFAR data. Our model testing scheme in itself provides an invaluable asset for pulsar timing array (PTA) experiments. Since, improperly accounting for the solar wind signature in pulsar data can induce false-positive signals, it is of fundamental importance to include in any such investigations. We employed a Bayesian approach utilising a continuously varying Gaussian process to model the solar wind. It uses a spherical approximation that modulates the electron density. This method, which we refer to as a solar wind Gaussian process (SWGP), has been integrated into existing noise analysis software, specifically enterprise . Our Validation of this model was performed through simulations. We then conduct noise analysis on eight pulsars from the LOFAR dataset, with most pulsars having a time span of $ 11$ years encompassing one full solar activity cycle. Furthermore, we derived the electron densities from the dispersion measure values obtained by the SWGP model. Our analysis reveals a strong correlation between the electron density at 1 AU and the ecliptic latitude (ELAT) of the pulsar. Pulsars with $|ELAT|< 3^ circ $ exhibit significantly higher average electron densities. Furthermore, we observed distinct temporal patterns in the electron densities in different pulsars. In particular, pulsars within $|ELAT|< 3^ circ $ exhibit similar temporal variations, while the electron densities of those outside this range correlate with the solar activity cycle. Notably, some pulsars exhibit sensitivity to the solar wind up to $45^ circ $ away from the Sun in LOFAR data. The continuous variability in electron density offered in this model represents a substantial improvement over previous models, that assume a single value for piece-wise bins of time. This advancement holds promise for solar wind modelling in future International Pulsar Timing Array (IPTA) data combinations.

Tuning Electron Transfer Coupling and Exchange Interaction in Bis-triarylamine Radical Cations and Dications by Bridge Electron Density.

The influence of the electron density of a bridge connecting two redox centers on both the intervalence hole transfer and the magnetic superexchange was investigated in a series of bridged bis-triarylamine mono- and dications. In this series, the bridge was 2,7-fluorenyl, where the bridge electron density was modified by substituents at the 9-position. For the mixed-valence monocations, the observation of both an intervalence charge transfer (IVCT) band and an absorption band associated with an electron transfer from the bridging fluorene to the triarylamine radical cation centers allowed determination of the electron transfer couplings in the framework of the three-state generalized Mulliken-Hush theory. Comparison of the derived couplings with those obtained from a classical two-state approach demonstrates an enhancement of the electronic coupling which increases with decreasing bridge state energy. For the dicationic diradical counterparts, the singlet-triplet gap (exchange interaction) was determined both experimentally and by quantum chemical methods. Hereby, an increase of antiferromagnetic coupling with a lowering of the bridge state energy by electron donating substituents was observed. Analysis of the involved molecular orbitals suggests that the ferromagnetic coupling is inversely proportional to the square of the bridge energy, which is also supported by the experimental findings. This influence of the bridge state energy on both types of interactions, electron transfer and magnetic exchange, provides a design guideline for fine-tuning the properties of electronically coupled organic redox dyads by variation of the bridge electron density.

Experimental studies of H2/Ar plasma in a cylindrical inductive discharge with an expansion region

Abstract The electrical parameters of H2/Ar plasma in a cylindrical inductive discharge with an expansion region are investigated by a Langmuir probe, where Ar fractions range from 0% to 100%. The influence of gas composition and pressure on electron density, the effective electron temperature and the electron energy probability functions (EEPFs) at different spatial positions are present. In driver region, with the introduction of a small amount of Ar at 0.3 Pa, there is a rapid increase in electron density accompanied by a decrease in the effective electron temperature. Additionally, the shape of the EEPF transitions from a three-temperature distribution to a bi-Maxwellian distribution due to an increase in electron–electron collision. However, this phenomenon resulting from the changes in gas composition vanishes at 5 Pa due to the prior depletion of energetic electrons caused by the increase in pressure during hydrogen discharge. The EEPFs for the total energy in expansion region is coincident to these in the driver region at 0.3 Pa, as do the patterns of electron density variation between these two regions for differing Ar fractions. At 5 Pa, as the discharge transitions from H2 to Ar, the EEPFs evolved from a bi-Maxwellian distribution with pronounced low energy electrons to a Maxwellian distribution in expansion region. This evolve may be attributed to a reduction in molecular vibrational excitation reactions of electrons during transport and the transition from localized electron dynamics in hydrogen discharge to non-localized electron dynamics in argon discharge. In order to validate the experimental results, we use the COMSOL simulation software to calculate electrical parameters under the same conditions. The evolution and spatial distribution of the electrical parameters of the simulation results agree well with the trend of the experimental results.

Multi‐Instrument and SAMI3‐TIDAS Data Assimilation Analysis of Three‐Dimensional Ionospheric Electron Density Variations During the April 2024 Total Solar Eclipse

AbstractThis paper conducts a multi‐instrument and data assimilation analysis of the three‐dimensional ionospheric electron density responses to the total solar eclipse on 08 April 2024. The altitude‐resolved electron density variations over the continental US and adjacent regions are analyzed using the Millstone Hill incoherent scatter radar data, ionosonde observations, Swarm in situ measurements, and a novel TEC‐based ionospheric data assimilation system (TIDAS) with SAMI3 model as the background. The principal findings are summarized as follows: (a) The ionospheric hmF2 exhibited a slight enhancement in the initial phase of the eclipse, followed by a distinct reduction of 20–30 km in the recovery phase of the eclipse. The hmF2 in the umbra region showed a post‐eclipse fluctuation, characterized by wavelike perturbations of 10–25 km in magnitude and a period of 30 min. (b) There was a substantial reduction in ionospheric electron density of 20%–50% during the eclipse, with the maximum depletion observed in the F‐region around 200–250 km. The ionospheric electron density variation exhibited a significant altitude‐dependent feature, wherein the response time gradually delayed with increasing altitude. (c) The bottomside ionospheric electron density displayed an immediate reduction after local eclipse began, reaching maximum depletion 5–10 min after the maximum obscuration. In contrast, the topside ionospheric electron density showed a significantly delayed response, with maximum depletion occurring 1–2.5 hr after the peak obscuration.

MUSE spectroscopy of the high abundance discrepancy planetary nebula NGC\,6153

The abundance discrepancy problem in planetary nebulae (PNe) has long puzzled astronomers. NGC\,6153, with its high abundance discrepancy factor (ADF sim 10), provides a unique opportunity to study the chemical structure and ionisation processes within these objects. We aim to understand the chemical structure and ionisation processes in this high-ADF nebula by constructing detailed emission line maps and examining variations in electron temperature and density. This study also explores the discrepancies between ionic abundances derived from collisional and recombination lines, shedding light on the presence of multiple plasma components. We used the MUSE spectrograph to acquire IFU data covering the wavelength range 4600$-$9300 with a spatial sampling of 0.2 arcsec and spectral resolutions ranging from R = 1609 to R = 3506. We created emission line maps for 60 lines and two continuum regions. We developed a tailored methodology for the analysis of the data, including correction for recombination contributions to auroral lines and the contributions of different plasma phases. Our analysis confirmed the presence of a low-temperature plasma component in NGC\,6153. We find that electron temperatures derived from recombination line and continuum diagnostics are significantly lower than those derived from collisionally excited line diagnostics. Ionic chemical abundance maps were constructed, considering the weight of the cold plasma phase in the emission. Adopting this approach we found ionic abundances that could be up to 0.2 dex lower for those derived from CELs and up to 1.1 dex higher for those derived from RLs than in the case of a homogeneous emission. The abundance contrast factor (ACF) between both plasma components was defined, with values, on average, 0.9 dex higher than the ADF. Different methods for calculating ionisation correction factors (ICFs), including state-of-the-art literature ICFs and machine learning techniques, yielded consistent results. Our findings emphasise that accurate chemical abundance determinations in high-ADF PNe must account for multiple plasma phases. Future research should focus on expanding this methodology to a broader sample of PNe, with spectra deep enough to gather physical condition information of both plasma components, which will enhance our understanding of their chemical compositions and the underlying physical processes in these complex objects.

Early detection of Tonga volcanic-eruption from internal gravity wave effects on ionosphere, using satellite geodetic techniques

The occurrence of some natural hazards in the troposphere may lead to creation of Internal Gravity Waves (IGWs). These waves transfer energy from the lower troposphere to upper layers, and to the ionosphere. When these IGWs reach the ionosphere, they create significant variations in the ionospheric parameters. Therefore, they have considerable effects on performance of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) receivers. In this study, we used double-frequency measurements of GNSS ground-based stations from GEONET network in New Zealand to detect the IGWs created by the tsunami induced from the 2022 Tonga volcanic eruption. In addition to GNSS measurements, FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC-2 (F7/C2) data, and SWARM data were also used to study these IGWs. It is known that many of the IGWs have horizontal phase speeds faster than that of the tsunami. As the volcanic-originated IGWs spread in cone-shape pattern, it is possible to detect these fast IGWs in the ionosphere earlier than the tsunami waves, reaching the tide gauges or DART buoys. In our study, we could detect the first IGWs at the New Zealand GNSS stations, 2 h earlier than the first registration of the tsunami waves at tide gauges and DART buoys near the New Zealand peninsula, which is located approximately 1.600 km from the Tonga Volcano. It can be concluded that IGWs can be used to warn tsunamis faster than the current early-warning systems, which make use of tide gauges and DART buoys. Furthermore, the spatial variations in ionospheric electron density (IED) were investigated using F7/C2 RO data. The results show that the volcanic-originated IGWs cause reduction in the IED peak value and altitude. The results of IED derived from F7/C2 and SWARM were in good agreement.

OI 630.0 nm Post‐Sunset Emission Enhancement as an Effect of Tidal Activity Over Low‐Latitudes

AbstractThe OI 630.0 nm airglow emission variability provides salient information on the dynamical changes taking place in the upper atmosphere at around 250 km. The emission rates vary with the changes in the ambient electron densities and the neutral constituents that are associated with these emissions. On several occasions, enhancements in these emissions are observed during post‐sunset hours, around 21 local time (LT), as measured from Mt. Abu (24.6°N, 72.7°E, 19°N Mag), a low‐latitude location at Indian longitudes. These enhancements occur following the typical monotonic decrease in emission intensity after sunset. The presence of poleward meridional wind preceded by cessation and reversal of equatorward wind at the post‐sunset hours was shown to be the cause for such observed emission enhancements in an earlier study. In this study, the cause of such reversal in meridional winds during post‐sunset hours has been investigated using the variation in electron densities and meridional winds simulated by the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with thermosphere‐ionosphere eXtension (WACCM‐X), which also shows enhancements in electron densities similar to those observed in the post‐sunset OI 630.0 nm nightglow emissions, and simultaneous reversal in meridional winds as well. The amplitudes and phases of different components of tides obtained from WACCM‐X meridional winds reveal a significant contribution of higher‐order tides, especially, quarter‐diurnal tides, to the observed reversal in the meridional winds during post‐sunset hours.

Satellite orbit determination and time synchronization using GPS single-frequency observables in low and high solar activities

We assess the orbit accuracy and time synchronization error using the L1 and C1 observables during the different solar activities. In general, GPS single-frequency (SF) observable can be used for commercial applications in satellite industry. The accuracy of satellite orbit determination using the SF observations is dominated by solar activities. The solar activities are indexed by the F10.7 value. The different solar activities lead to the ionosphere perturbation, triggering off the occurrence probability of ionospheric irregularities. The ionospheric irregularity affects the amplitude and phase of GPS signal. The affected amplitude and phase are indexed by the S4 value. We determine the GRACE satellite orbit using the SF GPS observations and compare the resulting orbit to that derived by dual-frequency observations for the effectiveness. The SF phase data are very sensitive to the variation in electron density and indirectly affects both the orbit accuracy and the time synchronization error. This is most likely caused by the phase ambiguity disturbed by the ionosphere. However, the C1 is relatively free from such a disturbance due to the strong signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the phase shift keying technique. The C1 performs the consistent solution over the low and high solar activities. However, this is not the case for the L1. The L1-derived orbit solution during the high solar activities is worse than that during the low solar activities. On the other hand, the time synchronization errors derived by the L1 and C1 are also different. The L1-derived time synchronization error has a relatively large perturbation as compared to the C1-derived one, which shows a consistent solution for a long-term period. This work suggests that the C1 observable is able to produce a consistent the orbit solution and time synchronization for the commercial applications of the satellite industry.Graphical

Doppler variations in radar observations of resident space objects: Likely ionospheric Pc1 plasma waves

Radars performing observations of resident space objects (RSO) measure Doppler variations in wave events of several minutes duration, with frequencies in the 0.2–1 Hz range peaking near 0.5–0.7 Hz, consistent with variations in electron density induced by waves in the intervening ionosphere. The two mid-latitude radars used were a Very High Frequency (VHF) radar operating at 55 MHz, and a High Frequency (HF) radar operating at 30 MHz, both in southern Australia.The VHF radar wave observations exibited a peak in wave occurrence in the post-dawn sector (0600–1200 local solar time). The seasonal occurrence of the waves had a strong minimum during winter compared with the other seasons. Comparison between observations in 2018/19 (near solar minimum) and 2021/22 (mid-rise to cycle 25 peak) suggests wave occurrence is anti-correlated with sunspot number and hence with EUV and ionospheric strength. Generally the waves had higher frequencies during night than day, and low sunspot number than mid solar cycle, when there was a weaker ionosphere.Given the oscillation frequency of the wave events, the most likely geophysical phenomena that is consistent with the observations are electro-magnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) plasma waves in the Pc1 (0.2–5 Hz) frequency range. No other candidate geophysical disturbance appears to fit the wave characteristics. The majority of geomagnetic field-guided transverse Pc1 EMICWs project from the outer magnetosphere down onto the polar ionosphere, where they can convert to compressional fast-mode waves propagating parallel to the Earths surface in the ionospheric F2 layer waveguide, both equatorwards to mid-latitudes and polewards. It is likely the majority of the Doppler oscillations in the Pc1 frequency range observed by the radars at mid-latitudes are these ducted compressional waves. However, sources of transverse EMICWs from the magnetosphere onto the mid-latitude ionosphere do exist, and these may cause some of the observed oscillations. The micro-physics of these compressional waves causing Doppler oscillations in radio observations is not inconsistent with the history of ionospheric Doppler measurements and theory, although the radar trans-ionospheric radio propagation and the observed waves being higher frequency than previous studies is different.If the observed Doppler oscillations are compressional EMICW in the ionospheric waveguide then several of the statistical results can be explained. The anti-correlation of the wave occurrence with sunspot number (and resultant ionospheric strength) can be attributed to lower ionospheric attenuation at the higher latitudes, between where geomagnetically field-guided transverse EMIC waves initially enter the high-latitude ionospheric waveguide from the magnetosphere above, and their observation at mid-latitudes. The observation of higher frequency waves during low sunspot number may also be explained by a source effect in the magnetosphere that preferentially selects the higher frequency field-guided transverse EMIC waves to propagate down to the ionosphere.Comparisons will be shown with results from ground and space based magnetometers of compressional waves in the waveguide, highlighting consistent results and areas where the measurement techniques differ. Theory suggests the radar Doppler measurements are far more sensitive to variations in in-situ ionospheric electron density than magnetic field variations. This agrees with existing literature which highlights the very strong contribution from the compressional component. Theory also suggests that the Doppler sensitivity of a radar to ionospheric electron density variations is frequency dependent, with lower frequencies being more sensitive. This is borne out by the measurements, with the HF radar being more sensitive than the VHF radar.

Analyses of data from the first Chinese seismo electromagnetic satellite (CSES-01) together with other earthquake precursors associated with the Turkey earthquakes (February 6, 2023)

Abstract On 6 February 2023, at 01:17:35 and 10:24:49 UTC (LT = UTC + 03:00) two earthquakes with magnitude 7.8 (37.166° N, 37.042° E, depth ∼ 17.9 km) and 7.5 (38.024° N, 37.203° E, depth ∼ 10 km), respectively, heavily struck southern and central Turkey and northern and western Syria. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relation between pre-earthquake anomalies observed in different layers of the earth system and explore the earthquake mechanism of LAIC (Lithospheric Atmospheric Ionospheric Coupling) associated with earthquake precursors. To achieve this goal, electron density and temperature variations obtained from CSES-01 data in the Dobrovolsky’s area the Turkey earthquakes are analyzed in the period from November 1, 2022 to February 10, 2023. Since investigating the LAIC mechanism requires multi-precursor analysis, anomalies obtained from CSES-01 data were compared with the behavior of anomalies obtained from other lithospheric, atmospheric and ionospheric precursors in the same location and time of the study area. These anomalies that were analyzed in the previous study are: (1) TEC data obtained from GPS-GIM maps, (2) electron density and temperature variations obtained from Swarm satellites (Alpha, Bravo and Charlie) measurements, (3) Atmospheric data including water vapour, methane, ozone, CO and AOD obtained from the measurements of OMI and AIRS satellites, and (4) Lithospheric data including number of earthquakes obtained from USGS and also surface temperature obtained from the measurements of AIRS satellite. It should be noted that clear anomalies are observed between 1 and 5 days before the earthquake in electron density and temperature variations measured by CSES-01 during the day and night and they are in good agreement with the variations in the Swarm satellites data and GPS-TEC. The interesting and significant finding is that lithospheric anomalies are detected in the land surface temperature data in the time interval of 19–12 days before the earthquake, and then most of the atmospheric anomalies are observed in the time period of 10–5 days prior to the earthquake and at the end striking ionospheric anomalies are revealed during 5–1 days preceding the earthquake. Therefore, the results of this study confirm the sequence of appearing of earthquake precursors from the lower layers of the lithosphere to the upper layers of the ionosphere during 1–15 days before the earthquake, and finally proving the LAIC mechanism can significantly contribute to the efficiency and lower uncertainty of earthquake early warning systems in the future.

Evaluating plasma fluctuation by collisional-radiative model using Malliavin derivative

Abstract Non-equilibrium plasma has garnered significant attention due to its involvement in short-term phenomena. One example is plasma fluctuation, encompassing variations in electron temperature or density. This phenomenon is explored not only in nuclear fusion but also in semiconductor etching and thin film deposition. This study introduces an evaluation method employing Malliavin derivatives to predict plasma fluctuations based on a collisional-radiative model. This model delineates the chemical kinetics of excited states within the plasma. Given that electron impact excitation and atomic collisional processes are stochastic, they exhibit characteristics similar to a Wiener process. Furthermore, the properties of fractional Brownian motion are applied to the Malliavin derivative. The revised Wiener process is utilized to analyze the changes in excited-level populations within short durations. This approach assesses electron or atomic density fluctuations by considering the contributions of electron collisions and those of ground-state atoms.

The evaluation for plasma noise in arbitrary time-delay interferometry combinations

The laser interferometer space antenna (LISA) uses laser interferometry to measure gravitational wave-induced distance changes between freely falling test masses on separate spacecraft. In practice, the space-borne gravitational wave detector operates in a plasma medium, and subsequently, the variations in electron density affect the refractive index and add displacement noise to measurements. Geometric time-delay interferometry (TDI) is the TDI combinations searched by geometric method, which is employed to mitigate overwhelming laser phase noise. This study explores all forty-five second-generation geometric TDI combinations up to sixteen links, analyzing plasma noise effects via power spectral density and cross-spectral density calculations for different optical links. Our findings reveal that plasma noise can exceed the noise floor, which comprises optical metrology system and test mass acceleration noise, in certain low-frequency regions due to different noise transfer behaviors. Further, we establish electron density requirements for various TDI combinations, showing that densities below 100cm−3/Hz @ 10mHz satisfy LISA’s criteria across all forty-five combinations. This allows for optimized TDI selection based on specific plasma densities.
