Turbidity-tolerant underwater wireless optical communications using dense blue–green wavelength division multiplexing

Underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) has demonstrated high-speed and low-latency properties in clear and coastal ocean water because of the relatively low attenuation ‘window’ for blue–green wavelengths from 450 nm to 550 nm. However, there are different attenuation coefficients for transmission in ocean water at different wavelengths, and the light transmission more seriously deteriorates with fluctuations in the water turbidity. Therefore, traditional UWOC using a single wavelength or coarse blue–green wavelengths has difficulty tolerating variations in water turbidity. Dense wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology provides sufficient communication channels with a narrow wavelength spacing and minimal channel crosstalk. Here, we improve the UWOC in clear and coastal ocean water using dense blue–green WDM. A cost-effective WDM emitter is proposed with directly modulated blue–green laser diodes. Dense wavelength beam combination and collimation are demonstrated in a 20-metre underwater channel from 490 nm to 520 nm. Demultiplexing with a minimum channel spacing of 2 nm is realized by an optical grating. Remarkably, our WDM results demonstrate an aggregate data rate exceeding 10 Gbit/s under diverse water turbidity conditions, with negligible crosstalk observed for each channel. This is the densest WDM implementation with a record channel spacing of 2 nm and the highest channel count for underwater blue–green light communications, providing turbidity-tolerant signal transmission in clear and coastal ocean water.

Satellite‐Observed Decreases in Water Turbidity in the Pearl River Estuary: Potential Linkage With Sea‐Level Rise

AbstractWater turbidity is an important indicator of water quality, which regulates primary production by changing the light field in the water column. Thus, monitoring the spatial and temporal variations in water turbidity is environmentally and biologically important. In this study, nine commonly used spectral index algorithms were tuned using in situ data collected from two field surveys in the Pearl River Estuary of China, and the spectral ratios between the red and green bands (i.e., and ) were selected as the optimal indicator to estimate water turbidity in this region. A long‐term environmental data record of water turbidity was established for the Pearl River Estuary by applying the proposed algorithm to MODIS/Aqua data covering the estuary from 2003 to 2019. Water turbidity in the Pearl River Estuary has significantly decreased at a rate of 0.11 nephelometric turbidity units (NTU) per year (R2 = 0.84, p < 0.01). The decline in water turbidity is linked with sea‐level rise in this area. Sea‐level rise may cause the longitudinal and lateral landward retreat of estuarine turbidity maxima (ETMs), directly contributing to the decline in water turbidity. Further, the sea‐level rise and the decline in water turbidity in the Pearl River Estuary are also two effects resulting from similar processes, such as urbanization. A high degree of correlation was observed between the water turbidity and salinity, which could facilitate promising monitoring of the increasingly severe saltwater intrusions in this region.

Development patterns of an isolated oligo-mesophotic carbonate buildup, early Miocene, Yadana field, offshore Myanmar

Abstract The development history of an oligo-mesophotic, early Miocene, isolated carbonate system (>160 m in thickness), forming the uppermost part of the Oligo-Miocene Yadana buildup (northern Andaman Sea), has been evidenced from the integration of sedimentological core studies from 4 wells (cumulated core length: 343 m), well correlations, seismic interpretation and analysis of the ecological requirements of the main skeletal components. Three types of carbonate factory operated on the top of the platform, depending on water-depth, turbidity and nutrient level: (1) a scleractinian factory developing under mesophotic conditions during periods of high particulate organic matter supplies, (2) an echinodermal factory occupying dysphotic to aphotic area of the platform coevally with the scleractinian factory, (3) a large benthic foraminiferal-coralline algal factories prevailing under oligo-mesophotic and oligo-mesotrophic conditions. The limited lateral changes in facies between wells, together with the seismic expression of the Yadana buildup, suggest deposition on a flat-topped shelf. Carbonate production and accumulation on the Yadana platform was mainly controlled by light penetration, nutrient content and hydrodynamic conditions. Scleractinian-rich facies resulted from transport of coral pieces derived from mesophotic environments (mounds?) and deposited in deeper, low light , mud-rich environments in which lived abundant communities of suspension feeders such as ophiuroids. Changes in monsoonal intensity, terrestrial runoff from the Irrawaddy River, upwelling currents and internal waves activity during the early Miocene are likely responsible for significant variations in water turbidity and nutrient concentration in the Andaman Sea, thus promoting the development of an oligo-mesophotic, incipiently drowned platform.

VIIRS-Derived Water Turbidity in the Great Lakes

Satellite ocean color products from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) onboard the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP) since 2012 and in situ water turbidity measurements from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Great Lakes Environmental Database System are used to develop a water turbidity algorithm for satellite ocean color applications in the Great Lakes for water quality monitoring and assessments. Results show that the proposed regional algorithm can provide reasonably accurate estimations of water turbidity from satellite observations in the Great Lakes. Therefore, VIIRS-derived water turbidity data are used to investigate spatial and temporal variations in water turbidity for the entirety of the Great Lakes. Water turbidity values are overall the highest in Lake Erie, moderate in Lake Ontario, and relatively low in lakes Superior, Michigan, and Huron. Significantly high values in water turbidity appear in the nearshore regions, particularly in Thunder Bay (Lake Superior), Green Bay (Lake Michigan), and Saginaw Bay (Lake Huron). Seasonal patterns of water turbidity are generally similar in lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, and Ontario, showing relatively high values in the spring and autumn months and lows in the winter season, while the seasonal pattern in Lake Erie is apparently different from the other lakes, with the highest value in the winter season and the lowest in the summer season. A strong interannual variability in water turbidity is shown in the time series of the VIIRS-derived water turbidity data for most of the lakes.

THE USE OF BOREHOLE VIDEO IN INVESTIGATING THE HYDROLOGY OF A TEMPERATE GLACIER

A GeoVision Micro™ colour video camera was used to investigate the internal structure of 11 boreholes at Haut Glacier d'Arolla, Switzerland. The boreholes were distributed across a half-section of the glacier, with closest spacing towards the glacier margin. The boreholes were used to investigate the hydrology of the glacier through automatic monitoring of borehole water level and electrical conductivity (EC) at the glacier bed. EC profiling was undertaken in several boreholes to determine the existence of water quality stratification. Temporal variations in EC stratification were used to infer borehole water sources and patterns of water circulation. Borehole video was used to confirm the conclusions made from these indirect sources of evidence, and to provide an independent source of information on the structure and hydrology of this temperate valley glacier. The video showed variations in water turbidity, englacial channels and voids, conditions at the glacier bed and down-borehole changes in ice structure. Based on the video observations, englacial channels accounted for approximately 0·1% of the vertical ice thickness, and englacial voids for approximately 0·4%. Overall, the video images provided useful qualitative and semi-quantitative data that reinforce interpretations of a range of physical and chemical parameters measured in boreholes. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.
