Sediment supply variation control on Lower Eocene delta sequences (Tremp Basin, Spain)

Sediment supply variations are often overlooked when interpreting depositional sequences, with most studies instead emphasizing changes in accommodation space. Here, we investigated a temporally well-constrained shallow-marine succession in the Tremp Basin to test the control of sediment supply variations on the development of deltaic sequences during the early Eocene. We analyzed the paleoenvironmental record (sedimentary facies and δ13Corg values) of the Morillo Limestone and the Castigaleu Formation (52.2−50.6 Ma). The first progradation of the deltaic system is marked by the abrupt appearance of thick delta-front sandstones and associated with the first negative carbon isotopic excursions (CIEs) in the measured δ13Corg record. Subsequent phases of progradation align with subsequent negative CIEs. Conversely, positive CIEs correspond to finer-grained, more-distal prodelta deposits. A series of hyperthermal events occurred during the deposition, globally identified as negative CIEs on δ13Ccarb reference curves, which we tentatively correlate with our δ13Corg data. We therefore suggest that during deposition of this Lower Eocene shallow-marine succession, the primary trigger behind sequence generation was the high-frequency climate-induced variation in sediment supply, specifically the hyperthermal events, rather than changes in accommodation. This linkage underscores the complex interactions between climate dynamics and sedimentary responses that shape the stratigraphic architecture of shallow-marine settings.

Sediment flux variation as a record of climate change in the Late Quaternary deep‐water active Corinth Rift, Greece

AbstractThe value of deep‐water sedimentary successions as reliable records of environmental change has been questioned due to their long response times and sediment pathways leading to complex responses to climatic change and tectonic signals over differing timescales. We studied the Gulf of Corinth, Greece, to test the value of deep‐water stratigraphic successions as records of external controls on sediment flux in a setting with short response times and transport distances. The confinement of the rift basin allows for a near‐complete accounting of clastic sediment volumes. The recent acquisition of high‐resolution seismic reflection data, utilisation of International Ocean Discovery Programme Expedition 381 cores and a robust chronological framework, enable evaluation of the stratigraphy at a high temporal resolution. Combining borehole and high‐resolution seismic reflection data, distinct seismic units can be correlated to multiple paleoenvironmental proxies, permitting quantification of sediment flux variation across successive glacial–interglacial cycles at ca. 10 kyr temporal resolution. Trends in average sediment flux since ca. 242 ka show ca. 2–9 times greater sediment flux in cooler glacials compared to warmer interglacial conditions. The Holocene is an exception to low sediment flux for the interglacials, with ca. 5 times higher rates than previous interglacials. The short and steep configuration of the Sythas canyon and its fan at the base of an active submarine normal fault results in deep‐sea deposition at all sea‐level stands. In contrast, adjacent canyon systems shut down during warm intervals. When combined with palynology, results show that periods of distinct vegetation re‐organisation correlate to sediment flux changes. The temporal correlation of sediment flux to palynology in the Gulf of Corinth over the last ca. 242 kyr is evidence that variability of sediment supply is largely governed by climate‐related changes in hinterland catchments, with sea‐level and tectonics being second‐order controls on sediment flux variability.

Redistribution of debris‐flow sediment following severe wildfire and floods in the Jemez Mountains, New Mexico, USA

AbstractSevere fire on steep slopes increases stormwater runoff and the occurrence of runoff‐initiated debris flows. Predicting locations of debris flows and their downstream effects on trunk streams requires watershed‐scale high‐resolution topographic data. Intense precipitation in July and September 2013 following the June 2011 Las Conchas Fire in the Jemez Mountains, New Mexico, led to widespread debris flows in the watershed of Rito de los Frijoles. We differenced lidar Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) collected in 2010 and 2016 to map subwatersheds experiencing debris flows and changes in elevation of the trunk stream. Debris flow occurrence was well predicted by previous assessments of debris‐flow hazard; debris flows occurred in 7 of 9 sub‐basins where the debris‐flow hazard was above 60% for the 25‐year rainfall event, and in 0 of 21 basins where debris flow hazard was less than 60%. Debris flows resulted in fan deposition at the confluence with the trunk stream followed by transport during three documented floods. The bed of the 22 km trunk stream increased in elevation by a mean of 0.29 m, but the local change in thalweg elevation was controlled by inputs of water and sediment and longitudinal variation in gradient. Downstream of the mouths of tributaries with debris flows, the thalweg of the trunk stream rose as much as 2 m. Downstream of the mouths of tributaries without debris flows the thalweg of the main stem degraded by as much as 2 m, mobilizing sediment that was then deposited further downstream where the gradient of the trunk stream decreases. In conclusion, the transport of sediment generated by debris flows was predictably related to spatial variation in sediment supply, discharge and gradient.

Forward numerical modelling of pleistocene marine strata, North-West of Morocco

Numerical stratigraphic forward modelling is useful to understand and reconstruct the relative sea-level and sediment supply history responsible for particular strata. This analysis uses BARSIM, a simple 2D forward stratigraphic process-response model that simulates wave and storm processes, applied with an inverse modelling optimisation method to better understand the history of Pleistocene strata in the Achakkar basin of the Tangier region, Morocco. Observations of grain size and bed thickness in four outcrop vertical sections are matched with BARSIM model output to estimate the lowest-error best-fit relative sea level and sediment supply histories that may have controlled deposition of the observed strata assuming deposition over a 10 ky period, consistent with available dating from outcrop sections. The best-fit relative sea level history drops from 4.88 to −2.82 m with two lower-amplitude highstands in between, most likely representing interglacial eustatic and tectonic event. The best-fit sediment supply is variable through time and different for each vertical section, with greatest variation from 11.7 to 2.11 m2y-1 over the 10 ky interval in the north-east vertical section. The spatial and temporal variation of sediment supply in the four vertical sections represents typically dynamic depositional conditions in shallow marine nearshore areas. On the other hand, it can indicate high stratigraphic incompleteness caused by periods of non-deposition or erosion with temporal variations in sediment supply. The optimum way for the simple model to reproduce short intervals of high sedimentation rate separated by longer periods of hiatus and deposition followed by erosion results in a discontinuous stratigraphic record.

Modeling the Cross‐Sectional Dynamics of Tidal Sandbanks in Sediment‐Scarce Conditions

AbstractTidal sandbanks are large‐scale dynamic bedforms that consist of sandy sediment. They have been observed in shallow seas with varying sediment supply, including sediment‐scarce environments like the Flemish Banks, Zeeland Banks, and Norfolk Banks. However, we do not yet understand how scarcity affects sandbank evolution. Therefore, we have developed an idealized nonlinear process‐based model with the aim of studying cross‐sectional shape and migration under sediment‐scarce conditions. Scarcity is included through a non‐erodible layer from which no sediment can be entrained. Our results show that bank height and width decrease when the sediment budget decreases. The bank height is more sensitive to scarcity than bank width. Furthermore, sand scarcity decreases (and may even reverse) bank asymmetry and increases migration rate when a residual current is present. The migration rate attains a maximum for a specific sediment budget, which is controlled by the ratio of the cross‐sectional area of the sandbank and the tide‐averaged sediment flux. Our findings show that sandbank dynamics are strongly affected by scarcity, which is critical for seas with receding sediment stocks (e.g., through extraction).

Lithospheric- and crustal-scale controls on variations in foreland basin development in the Northern Alpine Foreland Basin

The Northern Alpine Foreland Basin (i.e., Molasse Basin) developed due to flexural subsidence from slab- and topographic loading during continental collision between the Adriatic and European plates. Previous studies highlight a diachronous transition from underfilled- to overfilled conditions in the Molasse Basin in response to orogen-parallel variations in flexural subsidence and sediment supply. In this contribution, we investigate the lithospheric- and crustal-scale orogenic process(es) that generated this diachronous transition. For this, we conducted a tectonostratigraphic analysis of the Molasse Basin. Firstly, we constructed a 3D geological model to derive the architecture of the European margin during the Eocene onset of flexure. Second, 2D/3D reflection seismic- and borehole data were used to characterise the spatiotemporal development of depositional environments and syn-flexural normal fault kinematics in the German Molasse. Our data show a stepwise rather than continuous eastward migration of the underfilled- to overfilled transition. Furthermore, syn-flexural fault kinematics document a Rupelian to early Burdigalian northward younging trend and higher cumulative Cenozoic offsets in the Eastern German Molasse (< 230 m) compared to the Western German Molasse (< 150 m). This implies a west-to-east increase in the curvature of bending of the European plate, induced by along-strike variations in the magnitude of applied loads and/or European lithospheric strength variations. These variations drove lateral variations in accommodation space and sediment supply. Subsequently, this led to the diachronous underfill-to-overfilled transition in the Molasse Basin. Taken together, we suggest that the diachronous transition was driven by spatiotemporal variations in the thickening of the orogenic wedge supported by slab detachment, promoted by subduction- and collision of the irregular European margin.

The pace of global river meandering influenced by fluvial sediment supply

Meandering rivers move gradually across the floodplains, and this river movement presents socioeconomic risks along river corridors and regulates terrestrial biogeochemical cycles. Experimental and field studies suggest that fluvial sediment supply can exert a primary control on lateral migration rates of rivers. However, we lack an understanding of the relative importance of environmental boundary conditions, such as floodplain vegetation and sediment supply, in setting the pace of river meandering across different environmental settings. Here, we combine the analysis of satellite imagery and global-in-scale sediment and water discharge models to evaluate the controls on lateral migration rates of 139 meandering rivers that span a wide range in size, climate, and bank vegetation. We show that migration rates normalized by the channel width monotonically increase with the volumetric sediment flux normalized by the characteristic size of the river. This relation is consistent across rivers in vegetated and unvegetated catchments, indicating that enhanced lateral migration rates in unvegetated basins is likely not only facilitated by lower bank mechanical strength, but also by higher normalized sediment supply in ephemeral rivers. Using three case examples, we also demonstrate that width-normalized meander migration rates respond to spatial gradients in sediment supply caused by river impoundments, highlighting the prominent role of sediment supply in setting the pace of meander migration. Our results suggest that sediment-supply variations caused by climate, land-cover and land-use changes can lead to predictable changes in meandering river evolution and ultimately drive architectural changes in sedimentary stratigraphy.

Sensitivity of modelled passive margin stratigraphy to variations in sea level, sediment supply and subsidence

AbstractWe produced a 10 Myr synthetic stratigraphic section using a forward stratigraphic model that generates marine deltaic stratigraphy over geological timescales. We recursively fit the model using a Bayesian inversion algorithm to test: (1) if it could be accurately reconstructed; (2) if the parameters used to create it could be recovered; and (3) the sensitivity of the model output to given model parameters and the attendant physical processes. The original synthetic stratigraphic section was produced with cyclical sea‐level variations of 40 and 30 m with 2.4 and 10 Myr periods respectively. Sediment was also supplied cyclically, in 2.4 and 10 Myr cycles with amplitudes of 30 and 80 tons/100 kyr, respectively, varying from a mean of 232 tons/100 kyr. Parameter values were sampled to fit the model using a Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm, resulting in a ±5 m (1σ) variation between the experimental output and the original. Sea level varied by ±7 m (1σ) within the posterior distribution of parameters. As a result, both the 10 Myr and 2.4 Myr sea‐level cycles could be extracted from the original output. The variation in sediment supply was approximately ±38 tons/100 kyr (1σ) and, as a result, only the larger long‐term supply variations could be accurately recovered in refitting the model. The variation in thermal, flexural and total subsidence across those parameter sets is less than ±10 m (1σ). The original section experienced 150 m of total subsidence at the depocentre. Our results demonstrate the distinct and interpretable imprint of sea level and subsidence on continental margin stratigraphy can be quantified. Moreover, we conclude that sea‐level change produces a defined effect on the geometries of stratigraphic architecture, and that techniques applied for the purpose of delineating sea‐level variation from continental margin strata have a well‐founded conceptual basis.

Uncertainties of Annual Suspended Sediment Transport Estimates Driven by Temporal Variability

AbstractThe majority of sediment transported from rivers to the global oceans is moved in suspension as fine particles. Thereby, the transported sediment shapes the physical environment regarding erosive and accumulative processes. Temporal variations in sediment supply and transport lead to unquantified uncertainties in annual load estimates, requiring high‐resolution data sets and a sound understanding of site‐specific catchment characteristics. We investigate the temporal variability of suspended sediment transport in four catchments in Germany with highly different discharge regimes and catchment sizes (&lt;1,000 km2 to &gt;100,000 km2). The data set consists of high‐resolution 15‐min turbidity measurements with daily discharge and frequent manual sampling. Utilizing a bootstrap approach based on the 15‐min time series, we assessed the impact of the sampling interval on annual load estimates for less frequent data sets. We use the sediment load exceedance time (Ts80%) as a measure of variability and relate it to uncertainties in annual load estimates. Since low‐frequency data sets rely on sediment rating curves, we performed a sensitivity analysis of the rating parameters a, b, and ε. Our results indicate a negative exponential relationship between Ts80% and uncertainties in annual load estimates. Based on the Ts80%, we can derive the shortest sampling frequency necessary to obtain annual load estimates with an error of &lt;20% over varying discharge regimes. Additionally, Ts80% is linked to rating exponent b, with low b‐values indicating high Ts80%‐values and lower variability, and high b‐values indicating higher variability.

The impact of sediment flux and calibre on flood risk in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal

AbstractThis paper investigates how variations in sediment supply, grain size distribution and climate change affect channel morphology and flood inundation in the Nakkhu River, Kathmandu, Nepal. Climate change‐induced extreme rainfall is expected to increase flood intensity and frequency, causing severe flooding in the Kathmandu basin. The upper reaches of the Nakkhu River are susceptible to landslides and have been impacted by large‐scale sand mining. We simulate potential erosion and deposition scenarios along a 14 km reach of the Nakkhu River using the landscape evolution model CAESAR‐Lisflood with a 10 m digital elevation model, field‐derived sediment grain size data, daily discharge records and flood forecast models. In a series of numerical experiments, we compare riverbed profiles, cross‐sections, flood extent and flow depths for three scenarios (1.2‐, 85‐ and 1000‐year return period floods). For each scenario, the model is first run without sediment transport and then with sediment transport for three grain size distributions (GSDs) (observed average, finer and coarser). In all cases, the inclusion of sediment led to predicted floods of a larger extent than estimated without sediment. The sediment grain size distribution was found to have a significant influence on predicted river morphology and flood inundation, especially for lower magnitude, higher probability flood events. The results emphasise the importance of including sediment transport in hydrological models when predicting flood inundation in sediment‐rich rivers such as those in and around the Himalaya.

The Late Paleozoic Ice Age in western equatorial Pangea: Context for complex interactions among aeolian, alluvial, and shoreface sedimentary environments during the Late Pennsylvanian – early Permian

The evolution of depositional environments in the Late Pennsylvanian-early Permian of the Paradox Basin in Utah, USA, is investigated through detailed sedimentological and high-resolution sequence stratigraphic analyses, in order to define a model of landscape evolution, to discuss the stratigraphic model, and to evaluate the significance of the cyclicity in the paleoclimatic context. Forty high-resolution cycles integrated in 15 minor and two major cycles are observed for the first time throughout the Late Pennsylvanian-early Permian units. A-three steps landscape evolution is recognized. First, the lower Cutler beds, mainly corresponded to a marine environment, with longshore bar, subtidal, tidal, mouth-bar, and with locally fluvial deposits. The upper part of the lower Cutler beds also contains an aeolian dune. Second, the Cedar Mesa Sandstone, corresponded to broad erg deposits which are present across the entire study area, whereas longshore bar, subtidal, mouth-bar, and some fluvial deposits are mainly preserved in the northern part of the studied area. Third, the Organ Rock Formation records decreasing aeolian dune field preservation. To the south, the aeolian environments are interbedded with shoreface deposits, whereas to the north, fluvial deposits with some mouth-bars are more developed. Semi-arid climatic conditions persisted, as indicated by the presence of calcretes. Everywhere in these three steps, root traces within sandstone bars indicate that a soil was once present above the sand dunes. This new model of landscape evolution documents complex interactions between aeolian, fluvial and marine environments within the entire Permian succession of the Paradox Basin. High-resolution stratigraphic analyses allow to discuss the significance of the cyclicity in a scenario that take into consideration sea-level variation in the Late Paleozoic Ice Age paleoclimatic context. This Late Pennsylvanian to early Permian succession reflects both relative sea-level fluctuations and the variability of sediment supply.

Exploring distinct types of intertidal bars on either side of a small estuary using a multifaceted approach

Multiple intertidal bars are common sedimentary landforms found on low-gradient sandy coasts exposed to low to moderate wave energy with a significant tidal range. However, studying the factors that influence their morphology can be challenging due to limited high-resolution field data and tools for bedform analysis. To address this, a multifaceted approach was used to investigate the morphology of intertidal bars at two adjacent tidal beaches on the north and south coasts of a small estuary on the Lianyungang coast of China. This approach included repeated real-time kinematic-global positioning system (RTK-GPS) leveling, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) surveys, surface sediment sampling, satellite remote sensing analysis, and automated bedform analysis. The study revealed two distinct types of intertidal bars on either side of the estuary with similar hydrodynamic settings. The north coast presented low-amplitude ridges (also called ridges and runnels), while the south coast had sand waves. The north coast displayed 2–5 oblique, asymmetrical, and dynamic bars that appeared at the seaward end of the intertidal zone and migrated landward to eventually attach to the steep beach on the landward end of the intertidal zone, representing a life cycle. The south coast had 6–9 parallel, continuous, symmetrical, and stable sand bars occupying the lower part of the intertidal zone. Due to the nearly identical hydrodynamic background, the alongshore variability in sediment supply is suggested as a key factor driving the formation of distinct types of bars.

Annual and decadal net morphological displacement of a small gravel‐bed channel

AbstractThe sediment supplied to a stream channel impacts the morphological trends experienced by that channel, and the long‐term trends are important to understand for many riverine applications. We introduce the term ‘net morphological displacement’ (NMD) to denote the net channel change revealed by the morphological method over multiple sediment transport events to make the concept more explicit for river management and use it to determine equilibrium or disequilibrium states. This study explores the morphological response of East Creek, a small threshold gravel‐bed channel in the Coast Mountains of British Columbia, Canada, to variations in flow and sediment supply at multiple spatial and temporal scales over 15 years. High‐resolution topographic data (HRTD) of the bed were combined with cross‐sectional surveys of the banks to determine the sediment supply that the channel responded to annually. The level of detection used to remove noise associated with HRTD was calibrated using an independent tracer stone dataset. The net effects from multiple floods caused distributions of bed elevation change to generally follow the log‐normal distribution, and mean depths of erosion and deposition were predominantly similar between morphological units. At the reach scale, the various reaches of East Creek responded differently to the same hydrological events due to the impacts from the varying supply conditions on the NMD. Shorter measurement periods would have resulted in inconclusive information that does not show the long‐term morphological trends of the channel. Determination of these trends can take years or decades, depending on the time and space scales of change, but there is generally a lack of long‐term channel monitoring programmes, notably after river restoration. More long‐term channel monitoring programmes are required to assess restoration projects and ensure their long‐term sustainability.

Post-glacial RSL changes and the demise of a local remnant Laurentide Ice-Sheet ice cap: A view from Anticosti island beach-ridges (Gulf of St Lawrence, Canada)

Widely spread worldwide, beach-ridge systems are established along prograding coastlines, either fostered by a falling Relative Sea-Level (RSL), by substantial sediment stocks being provided to the coastline, or by the combination of both agents. As such, they can form valuable archives of either large scale RSL and isostatic dynamics and/or of more local coastal processes, e.g. related to variations in riverine sediment supply. In this study, we analyze three raised beach-ridge complexes located on the island of Anticosti (Gulf of St.-Lawrence, Québec, Canada). Using both field and LiDAR DEM data, we produce new RSL histories for the north-eastern and north-western sectors of Anticosti Island region over the ca. 14.400 to 8.300 yrs cal. B.P. period. These new sea-level data allow to considerably refine the postglacial RSL history of the region, hence carrying large implications for the comprehension of the isostatic dynamics of the St-Lawrence region. Considerable misfits between our observations and outputs of the GIA models notably allow to propose refinements on the LIS architecture and melting history as well as on the rheological characteristics of the St-Lawrence valley. Locally, chronologies of progradation of the beach-ridges were mostly forced by RSL changes, yet also apparently recorded the demise of the local Anticosti remnant ice-cap throughout the changes in sediment supply the melting of the latter produced locally. Finally, some results of paleo-oceanographic significance could also be derived from the study of the beach-ridges, pertaining for instance to changes in sea-ice cover.

Landscape response to hydroclimate variability shown by the post-Bonneville Flood (ca. 18 ka) fluvial-geomorphic history of the middle Snake River, Idaho, USA

AbstractThe fluvial geomorphology and stratigraphy on the middle Snake River at Bancroft Springs, Idaho, provide evidence for numerous episodes of Snake River aggradation and incision since the Bonneville Flood at ca. 18 ka. A suite of seven terraces ranging from 20–1 m above modern bankfull elevation records multiple cut-and-fill cycles during the latest Pleistocene and Holocene in response to local base-level controls, variations in sediment supply, and hydroclimate change. Radiocarbon and luminescence dating show that the ages of fluvial aggradation generally coincide with increased sediment supply and likely wetter hydroclimate during onset of the Younger Dryas stadial (ca. 13.2 ka), deglaciation and termination of the Younger Dryas stadial (ca. 11.3 ka), Early Holocene cooling (ca. 8.8 ka), and Neoglacial (ca. 4.5, 2.9, 1.1 ka). Six intervening periods of incision and channel stability may also reflect either reduced sediment supply, drier hydroclimate, or both. The terrace chronology can be correlated to a variety of local and regional paleoclimate proxy records and corresponds well with periods of continental- and global-scale rapid climate change during the Holocene. The fluvial record demonstrates the geomorphic response and sensitivity of large river systems to changes in hydroclimate variability, which has important implications for inferring paleoenvironmental conditions in the region.

Tracking barrier island response to early Holocene sea-level rise: High resolution study of estuarine sediments in the Trinity River Paleovalley

Understanding how barrier islands respond to factors such as variations in sediment supply, relative sea-level rise, and accommodation is valuable for preparing coastal communities for future impacts of climate change. Increasingly, the underlying antecedent topography has been observed to have a significant control on the evolution of the barrier island system by providing increased elevation, decreased accommodation, and sediment supply for the barrier to rework and anchor upon. However, less attention has been focused on how back barrier sediments respond to this decreased accommodation, and how this may affect barrier island evolution. Additionally, the control in which the geometry of the underlying antecedent topography has on the initiation of barrier islands is poorly understood. Here we examine the stratigraphic framework of the Trinity River incised valley offshore Galveston, Texas to investigate the role of antecedent topography in the evolution of an early Holocene barrier island system. We present high-resolution imaging of the Trinity incised valley fill using over 1200 km2 of 3D seismic, ~700 km of 2D envelope and full waveform chirp data, along with 2 piston cores, 4 gravity cores, and 1 platform boring with associated grain size, foraminiferal, and radiocarbon data. We find that the geometry and elevation of the underlying antecedent topography plays a central role in the evolution of the barrier island system, promoting both initiation and stabilization. This study provides a methodology to investigate the evolution of a relict barrier island system where little to none of the barrier is preserved. With this methodology, we revise the established Holocene paleoshoreline model for the Trinity incised valley.

Paleo‐denudation rates suggest variations in runoff drove aggradation during last glacial cycle, Crete, Greece

AbstractFluvial aggradation and incision are often linked to Quaternary climate cycles, but it usually remains unclear whether variations in runoff or sediment supply or both drive channel response to climate variability. Here we quantify sediment supply with paleo‐denudation rates and provide geochronological constraints on aggradation and incision from the Sfakia and Elafonisi alluvial‐fan sequences in Crete, Greece. We report seven optically stimulated luminescence and ten radiocarbon ages, eight10Be and eight36Cl denudation rates from modern channel and terrace sediments. For five samples,10Be and36Cl were measured on the same sample by measuring10Be on chert and36Cl on calcite. Results indicate relatively steady denudation rates throughout the past 80 kyr, but the aggradation and incision history indicates a link with climate shifts. At the Elafonisi fan, we identify four periods of aggradation coinciding with Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 2, 4, 5a/b, and likely 6, and three periods of incision coinciding with MIS 1, 3, and likely 5e. At the Sfakia fan, rapid aggradation occurred during MIS 2 and 4, followed by incision during MIS 1. Nearby climate and vegetation records show that MIS 2, 4, and 6 stadials were characterized by cold and dry climates with sparse vegetation, whereas forest cover and more humid conditions prevailed during MIS 1, 3, and 5. Our data thus suggest that past changes in climate had little effect on landscape‐wide denudation rates but exerted a strong control on the aggradation–incision behaviour of alluvial channels on Crete. During glacial stages, we attribute aggradation to hillslope sediment release promoted by reduced vegetation cover and decreased runoff; conversely, incision occurred during relatively warm and wet stages due to increased runoff. In this landscape, past hydroclimate variations outcompeted changes in sediment supply as the primary driver of alluvial deposition and incision.

Temporal and spatial variability of suspended sediment rating curves for rivers draining into the Ethiopian Rift Valley

AbstractQuantification of suspended sediment dynamics is a proxy for the intensity of soil erosion processes in a catchment. However, direct measurement of suspended sediments is difficult. Long‐term‐based discharge‐suspended sediment relationships often fail to provide sufficiently accurate results due to the temporal variations in sediment supply. This study evaluates temporal variations in suspended sediment‐discharge relations for six stations in two selected catchments within the Gamo Highlands in the southern Ethiopian Rift Valley. During a three‐year period (2018–2020), discharge was monitored at a 10‐min interval using a TD‐diver, while 1938 samples of suspended sediment concentration were taken at specific events. Observed suspended sediment concentration varied between 0.04 and 130 kg m−3 for discharge ranging between quasi‐zeros to 339 m3 s−1. The results show that pooled annual datasets lead to unsatisfying sediment rating curves and large errors in estimated sediment load. However, stratification of the data into three rainy season periods strongly improved the performance of the sediment rating curves. The development of a vegetative cover throughout the rainy season largely controls sediment supply from hillslopes to the river channel and hence the shape of the sediment rating curves. Furthermore, localized bank erosion and gully head dynamics also lead to important interannual changes in sediment rating curves within one river system, as well as between different rivers. Thus, attention should be given to possible errors due to high temporal and spatial variability while using discharge‐suspended sediment relations to quantify sediment load.

Analysis of the geometric characteristics of clinothems and the relationship with shelf‐edge trajectories of the Plio‐Pleistocene continental slope in the Qiongdongnan Basin, South China Sea

AbstractBased on high‐quality two‐dimensional seismic profiles and well data, the seismic reflection characteristics from the late Pliocene and Pleistocene succession of the Qiongdongnan Basin in the South China Sea have been analysed. The result will help in understanding the sedimentological development of slope areas. Twenty coeval clinothems are recognized and four major clinothem types are distinguished. In addition, three types of shelf‐edge trajectories are recognized. The various parameters of the clinothems are analysed quantitatively and the relationships between the various clinothem types are studied in combination with the controlling roles. It is concluded that: (i) the shelf‐edge trajectories are related to the type of clinothem; (ii) fluctuations in the relative sea level, in combination with variations in sediment supply, result in different clinothem types and geometric parameters; these parameters show interdependencies; (iii) the alternations of progradation and aggradation of clinothems may provide information of the relative sea level and changes in sediment supply; (iv) some lowstand fans could develop at the foot of the slope in the central–eastern part of the basin when the relative sea level started to fall or began to rise. The results of the present study are consequently significant for further quantitative analyses of the characteristics and development of the continental slope, not only in the Qiongdongnan Basin, but also in other basins.
