Assessing the Impacts of Falling Ice Radiative Effects on the Seasonal Variation of Land Surface Properties

AbstractThe impacts of falling ice radiative effects (FIREs) on land‐atmosphere feedback processes were examined, with a focus on the fidelity of land surface properties and their variability as inferred by global climate models (GCMs). We conducted a pair of sensitivity experiments using the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Community Earth System Model Version 1 (CESM1) in fully coupled modes with FIREs turned on and off. This allowed us to investigate the seasonal response of land surface properties to changes in radiation fluxes and land surface temperature (LST) associated with FIREs across global land areas. Our findings indicate that during boreal winter, excluding FIREs results in less surface downward longwave and net flux (∼5–15 Wm−2), leading to a colder land surface (∼2–4 K) and air temperatures (∼1–4 K) at mid‐ and high latitudes. Consequently, the surface frozen soil layer and snow cover persist through spring, delaying snowmelt and thawing until summer. This delay reduces liquid soil moisture, thereby suppressing vegetation productivity in subsequent seasons. Conversely, tropical regions, exhibit contrasting responses, with a warmer land surface (∼0.5 K) and warmer air temperatures (∼0.1–0.5 K) due to increased surface downward shortwave and net flux (∼2–10 Wm−2). This enhancement in radiation fosters increased vegetation productivity throughout the seasonal cycle. These findings illustrate a local response of land surface properties to changes in the surface energy balance and LST, highlighting the significant role that FIREs play in land surface modeling within GCMs.

Process-Induced Crystal Surface Anisotropy and the Impact on the Powder Properties of Odanacatib.

Crystalline active pharmaceutical ingredients with comparable size and surface area can demonstrate surface anisotropy induced during crystallization or downstream unit operations such as milling. To the extent that varying surface properties impacts bulk powder properties, the final drug product performance such as stability, dissolution rates, flowability, and dispersibility can be predicted by understanding surface properties such as surface chemistry, energetics, and wettability. Here, we investigate the surface properties of different batches of Odanacatib prepared through either jet milling or fast precipitation from various solvent systems, all of which meet the particle size specification established to ensure equivalent biopharmaceutical performance. This work highlights the use of orthogonal surface techniques such as Inverse Gas Chromatography (IGC), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, contact angle, and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) to demonstrate the effect of processing history on particle surface properties to explain differences in bulk powder properties.

Zr4+-mercaptosuccinate MOF for the uptake and recovery of gold nanoparticles and gold ions under batch and continuous flow conditions

The increasing use of nanomaterials in commercial products has raised concerns regarding their potential effects on water quality and living organisms. So far, most sorbents available for removing nanosized inorganic pollutants from water rely on electrostatic interactions or entrapment in the sorbent pores. However, this limits their applicability in real wastewater samples containing nanomaterials with variable surface properties and sizes, along with high concentrations of competitive species such as inorganic salts and organics. Little attention has also been paid to the recovery of nanoparticles after sorption. In this work, a Zr4+-mercaptosuccinate metal organic framework (MOF) with free thiol groups was investigated as a sorbent for the removal of Au nanoparticles and Au3+ ions from water. Sorption occurs on the surface of the MOF via the formation of strong metal-thiolate chemical bonds enabling the fast uptake of noble metal nanoparticles and noble metal ions from water (within <1 h). The maximum sorption capacity was found to depend on the size of the Au nanoparticles and ranged from 8 to 41.5 mg/g. The surface functionalization of nanoparticles did not influence sorption performance, which was also maintained in natural waters of variable matrix complexity. The material was also efficient in fixed bed columns with an estimated maximum Au sorption capacity of approximately 7 mg/g, which is significantly higher than the environmental concentrations of Au nanoparticles and adequate for their removal from industrial wastewater. Importantly, the sorbed nanoparticles could be quantitatively recovered (>90 %), at the expense of material degradation, enabling their potential reuse.

Synthesis and transformation of graphene-like structures from bamboo waste for photoelectrochemical devices

This study presents a sustainable and versatile approach to synthesize graphene-like structures from bamboo waste for application in photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices. Due to its high cellulose content, bamboo, a locally available and renewable resource, is a perfect precursor for producing graphene-like materials. The synthesis process involves bamboo waste pyrolysis, followed by treatments with different solvents: ultrapure water (UPW), NaOH, and green tea extract. Characterization techniques confirmed the successful transformation of bamboo waste into carbon-rich, graphene-like materials with varying surface properties. The electrochemical characterization showed that the graphene-like materials could transfer electrons very well with a high current response compared to charcoal as a precursor. PEC evaluations revealed their potential as photoanodes, exhibiting efficient light absorption and charge carrier separation. This research emphasizes the significance of bamboo waste as a valuable precursor for eco-friendly graphene-like materials, offering a sustainable pathway for developing efficient PEC devices and green energy technologies.

Insulin biotrapping using plasmofluidic optical fiber chips: A benchmark

Plasmonic optical fiber-based biosensors are currently in their early stages of development as practical and integrated devices, gradually making their way towards the market. While the majority of these biosensors operate using white light and multimode optical fibers (OFs), our approach centers on single-mode OFs coupled with tilted fiber Bragg gratings (TFBGs) in the near-infrared wavelength range. Our objective is to enhance surface sensitivity and broaden sensing capabilities of OF-based sensors to develop in situ sensing with remote interrogation. In this study, we comprehensively assess their performance in comparison to the gold-standard plasmonic reference, a commercial device based on the Kretschmann-Raether prism configuration. We present their refractive index sensitivity and their capability for insulin sensing using a dedicated microfluidics approach. By optimizing a consistent surface biotrapping methodology, we elucidate the dynamic facets of both technologies and highlight their remarkable sensitivity to variations in bulk and surface properties. The one-to-one comparison between both technologies demonstrates the reliability of optical fiber-based measurements, showcasing similar experimental trends obtained with both the prismatic configuration and gold-coated TFBGs, with an even enhanced limit of detection for the latter. This study lays the foundation for the detection of punctual molecular interactions and opens the way towards the detection of spatially and temporally localized events on the surface of optical probes.

A simple three-cylinder radiometer and low-speed anemometer to characterize human extreme heat exposure.

As populations and temperatures of urban areas swell, more people face extreme heat and are at increasing risk of adverse health outcomes. Radiation accounts for much of human heat exposure but is rarely used as heat metric due to a lack of cost-effective and accurate sensors. To this end, we fuse the concepts of a three-globe radiometer-anemometer with a cylindrical human body shape representation, which is more realistic than a spherical representation. Using cost-effective and readily available materials, we fabricated two combinations of three cylinders with varying surface properties. These simple devices measure the convection coefficient and the shortwave and longwave radiative fluxes. We tested the devices in a wind tunnel and at fourteen outdoor sites during July 2023's record-setting heat wave in Tempe, Arizona. The average difference between pedestrian-level mean radiant temperature (MRT) measured using research-grade 3-way net radiometers and the three-cylinder setup was 0.4 3.0°C ( 1 SD). At most, we observed a 10°C MRT difference on a white roof site with extreme MRT values (70°C to 80°C), which will be addressed through discussed design changes to the system. The measured heat transfer coefficient can be used to calculate wind speed below 2m·s-1; thus, the three cylinders combined also serve as a low-speed anemometer. The novel setup could be used in affordable biometeorological stations and deployed across urban landscapes to build human-relevant heat sensing networks.

A Quantitative Approach to Characterize the Surface Modification on Nanoparticles Based on Localized Dielectric Environments.

Nanoparticles (NPs) are utilized for the functionalization of composite materials and nanofluids. Although oxide NPs (e.g., silica (SiO2)) exhibit less dispersibility in organic solvents or polymers due to their hydrophilic surface, the surface modification using silane coupling agents can improve their dispersibility in media with low dielectric constants. Herein, SiO2 NPs were functionalized using octyltriethoxysilane (OTES, C8) and dodecyltriethoxysilane (DTES, C12), wherein the degrees of surface modification of SiO2@C8 and SiO2@C12 were quantitatively evaluated based on the ratio of modifier to surface silanol group (θ) and the volume fraction of organic modifier to total particle volume (ϕR). The variations of surface properties were revealed by analyzing the Hansen solubility parameters (HSP). Particularly, the surface modification using OTES or DTES significantly affected the polarity (δP) of NPs. The local dielectric environments of surface-modified SiO2 NPs were characterized using a solvatochromic dye, Laurdan. By analyzing the peak position of the steady-state emission spectrum of Laurdan in a NP suspension, the apparent dielectric environments surrounding NPs (εapp) were obtained. A good correlation between ϕR and εapp was observed, indicating that ϕR is a reliable quantity for understanding the properties of surface-modified NPs. Furthermore, the generalized polarization (GP) of NPs was investigated. The surface-modified SiO2 NPs with higher ϕR (≥0.15) exhibited GP > 0, suggesting that the modifiers are well-organized on the surface of NPs. The localized dielectric environment surrounding NPs could be predicted by analyzing the volume fraction of nonpolar moieties derived from modifiers. Alternatively, εapp and GP can be utilized for understanding the properties of inorganic-organic hybrid NPs.

Impact of Molecular Weight on Anti-Bioadhesion Efficiency of PDMS-Based Coatings

Silicone elastomer coatings have shown successful fouling release ability in recent years. To further enhance the design of silicone coatings, it is necessary to fully understand the mechanisms that contribute to their performance. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between the molecular weight of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and antibioadhesion efficiency. PDMS-based coatings were prepared via a condensation reaction, with a controlled molecular weight ranging from 0.8 to 10 kg·mol−1. To evaluate changes in surface wettability and morphology, contact angle experiments and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were performed. Finally, the antibioadhesion and self-cleaning performance of PDMS coatings was carried out during in situ immersion in Lorient harbor for 12 months. Despite small variations in surface properties depending on the molecular weight, strong differences in the antibioadhesion performance were observed. According to the results, the best antibioadhesion efficiency was obtained for coatings with an Mn between 2 and 4 kg·mol−1 after 12 months. This paper provides for the first time the impact of the molecular weight of PDMS on antibioadhesion efficiency in a real marine environment.

Ecotoxicity of tire wear particles to antioxidant enzyme system and metabolic functional activity of river biofilms: The strengthening role after incubation-aging in migrating water phases

Tire wear particles (TWPs) are commonly studied for their exudation toxicity, yet a critical knowledge gap exists regarding the source nature and migration of these particulate pollutants, hindering comprehensive environmental risk assessments. This study explores the pristine properties of three typical TWPs (rolling friction (R-TWPs), sliding friction (S-TWPs), and cryogenically milled tire treads (C-TWPs)) and their aging characteristics after incubation in runoff (primary aging) and sewage (further aging). Our investigation aims to unveil the intrinsic mechanisms of TWPs ecotoxicity towards freshwater biofilms. Results reveal that the generation modes significantly impact pristine physicochemical properties, including surface structure, particle size, and EPFR abundance. These factors, in turn, influence acute ecotoxicity, as evidenced by cell mortality, antioxidant enzyme activity responses, and metabolic changes in freshwater biofilms. The ecological toxicity ranking of pristine exposure groups is S-TWPs, R-TWPs, and C-TWPs, attributed to variations in surface properties and particle size. Following incubation and aging, especially in sewage, differences in physicochemical properties among TWPs types diminish. Alarmingly, ecotoxicity intensifies and becomes consistent across TWPs types, driven by the screening of small particles during water incubation aging and the formation of EPFRs on TWPs surfaces stimulated by photosensitive organic matter or groups. This study underscores the aquatic ecological risks associated with TWP surface properties, highlighting the significant influence of environmental aging conditions on these risks.

Drug-loaded adhesive microparticles for biofilm prevention on oral surfaces.

The oral cavity, a warm and moist environment, is prone to the proliferation of microorganisms like Candida albicans (C. albicans), which forms robust biofilms on biotic and abiotic surfaces, leading to challenging infections. These biofilms are resistant to conventional treatments due to their resilience against antimicrobials and immune responses. The dynamic nature of the oral cavity, including the salivary flow and varying surface properties, complicates the delivery of therapeutic agents. To address these challenges, we introduce dendritic microparticles engineered for enhanced adhesion to dental surfaces and effective delivery of antifungal agents and antibiofilm enzymes. These microparticles are fabricated using a water-in-oil-in-water emulsion process involving a blend of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) random copolymer (RCP) and PLGA-b-poly(ethylene glycol) (PLGA-b-PEG) block copolymer (BCP), resulting in particles with surface dendrites that exhibit strong adhesion to oral surfaces. Our study demonstrates the potential of these adhesive microparticles for oral applications. The adhesion tests on various oral surfaces, including dental resin, hydroxyapatite, tooth enamel, and mucosal tissues, reveal superior adhesion of these microparticles compared to conventional spherical ones. Furthermore, the release kinetics of nystatin from these microparticles show a sustained release pattern that can kill C. albicans. The biodegradation of these microparticles on tooth surfaces and their efficacy in preventing fungal biofilms have also been demonstrated. Our findings highlight the effectiveness of adhesive microparticles in delivering therapeutic agents within the oral cavity, offering a promising approach to combat biofilm-associated infections.

Investigations of Surface-Treated Wood by a Micro-Indentation Approach: A Short Review and a Case Study

Over the past 50 years, instrumented indentation, in which an indenter tip probes the specimen surface with a regulated force and displacement to characterize its mechanical properties, has evolved. With the development of atomic force microscopy, instrumented nanoindentation has been extensively applied, and instrumented indentation in the micro range (micro-indentation) has been somewhat overshadowed by nanoindentation. However, micro-indentation remains an extremely useful technique that has the potential to investigate various properties of surface treated wood. In the first, overview-type part of the paper, instrumented micro-indentation is described and some examples of its possible applications in the field of wood science and technology are presented. To illustrate the importance of this experimental technique, some results of micro-indentation experiments carried out in our wood surface treatment laboratory are shown in the second part of the paper. The objects of the tests were untreated Scots pine wood and Scots pine wood with surface deposits of SiO2 or ZnO. The differences between the mechanical properties of early and latewood could be clearly distinguished by the micro indentation technique. On the other hand, the influence of ZnO and SiO2 particles on mechanical properties as a function of indentation depth could not be detected by this technique.

Interfacial adhesion between recycled aggregate and asphalt mastic filled with recycled concrete powder

Recycled aggregate (RA) and recycled concrete powder (RCP) hold significant potential as environmentally sustainable raw materials for asphalt mixtures. In this study, a comprehensive investigation was conducted on the bonding properties between RA and RCP-filled asphalt mastic (RCPAM). This investigation utilized an image processing-assisted modified water boiling test, binder bond strength (BBS) tests, and the surface free energy (SFE) method. The results indicate that the boiling water test method, even with the assistance of 2D image processing analysis, cannot adequately evaluate the adhesive characteristics of the RA-RCPAM interface. This limitation could be attributed to the relatively small number of samples tested and the significant variation in surface properties of RA. Increasing both the filler-to-asphalt (F/A) ratio and RCP replacement ratio adversely affected the interfacial bond strength of the RA-RCPAM interface. On the other hand, an increase in RA surface roughness contributed to a higher bond strength. Based on the experimental results, a best-fit multivariate mixed model was proposed to predict the interfacial bond strength between RCP-filled asphalt mastic and recycled aggregate within a given range of RCP replacement ratio, surface roughness, and filler-to-asphalt (F/A) ratios. The analysis of SFE suggested that moisture damage to RCPAM was caused by both cohesive and adhesive failure. Additionally, the minimal impact of adhesion work in wet condition with increasing RCP content suggested that adhesion failure energy was only marginally affected by the inclusion of RCP, even in the presence of moisture. These findings are expected to enhance the understanding of interfacial adhesion characteristics and moisture susceptibility of the RA-RCPAM interface.

Impact Crater Morphometry on Pluto: Implications for Surface Composition and Evolution

New Horizons showed that Pluto exhibits a wide range of geologic groups, with much of the surface modified by volatile ice processes. Impact craters are a valuable tool to investigate how these regions have evolved, as they record the effects of various modification mechanisms and retain information on the properties of the bedrock ice(s). In this work, we use Pluto’s crater population to quantify the extent of surface modification and identify variations in surface properties on Pluto. In this study, we have measured the relative depth of Pluto’s craters compared to minimally modified water-ice craters to interpret how the craters may have evolved and/or what the information tells us about the surface properties of the bedrock. We found a trend of increasing crater relative depth from southeast to northwest that may reflect the conditions of an ancient surface when a thicker layer of volatile ice may have existed, possibly changed by polar wander after the Sputnik impact. We have identified anomalously deep craters across Pluto’s surface, with a concentration in Cthulhu Macula, suggesting different bedrock-ice properties in this region. Other deep craters may be influenced by extraneous factors, such as impactor speed. Overall, this study expands on our understanding of the evolution and composition of Pluto’s surface and sets a road map for further investigations into Pluto’s surface evolution.

Microalgae cell adhesions on hydrophobic membrane substrates using quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation.

Microalgal cell adhesion and biofilm formation are affected by interactions between microalgae strains and membrane materials. Variations of surface properties of microalgae and membrane materials are expected to affect cell-membranes and cell-cell interactions and thus initial microalgal cell adhesion and biofilm formation rates. Hence, it should be possible to identify the dominant mechanisms controlling microalgal cell adhesion and biofilm formation. The effects of surface properties of three different microalgal strains and three different types of membrane materials on microalgal cell adhesion and biofilm formation were systematically investigated in real time by monitoring changes in the oscillation frequency and dissipation of the quartz crystal resonator (QCM-D). The results revealed that in general a higher surface free energy, more negative zeta potential, and higher surface roughness of membrane materials positively correlated with a larger quantity of microalgae cell deposition, while a more hydrophilic microalgae with a larger negative zeta potential preferred to attach to a more hydrophobic membrane material. The adhered microalgal layers exhibited viscoelastic properties. The relative importance of these mechanisms in controlling microalgae cell attachment and biofilm formation might vary, depending on the properties of specific microalgae species and hydrophobic membrane materials used.

Nanocomposite colloids prepared by the Ouzo effect

HypothesisThe organization of nanoparticles within nanocomposite colloids can imbue added functionality to these suprastructures. We hypothesize that the arrangement of nanoparticles in nanocomposite colloids can be systematically controlled by inducing co-precipitation of oil and a hydrophilic polymer in the presence of nanoparticles with a range of wetting properties. This process will produce oil core/polymer shell nanocapsules with nanoparticles strategically positioned within the suprastructures. ExperimentsCoprecipitation of oil and polymer in the presence of nanoparticles is performed in glass capillary microfluidics. Silica nanoparticles of varying surface properties and morphology are used to investigate the relationship between nanoparticle wetting properties and nanocolloid morphology. The features of the nanocomposites formed are investigated using electron microscopy, sessile drop, and zeta potential measurements. FindingsWhen spherical nanoparticles with wetting properties ranging from hydrophilic to hydrophobic are used, the nanocomposite morphologies formed range from nanoparticles partially engulfed in the polymer shell to nanoparticles embedded in the oil core of the nanocapsule. The number of nanoparticles introduced in the nanocomposite is adjusted by changing their concentration in the precursor solution. The structure of nanocolloids formed with non-spherical or hollow silica nanoparticles depends on their wetting properties.

Scene-adaptive pattern coding-based fringe projection profilometry: diffuse surfaces identification and 3-D reconstruction in cluttered scenes.

Fringe projection profilometry (FPP) is one of the most widely used optical three-dimensional (3-D) perceiving techniques. However, when applied to cluttered scenes, acquiring accurate 3-D shapes is difficult because of the influences of indirect light caused by non-diffuse surfaces. In this paper, we first theoretically analyze and model the influences of indirect light in FPP, and then propose a scene-adaptive pattern coding-based method, which can design projection patterns based on the reflective properties of the scene's surfaces, to achieve accurate 3-D perceiving in cluttered scenes. Specifically, the scene confidence analysis method is first proposed to identify the reflective properties of various surfaces and localize the camera pixels of the diffuse surface. The illumination status (i.e., "0" or "1") of each projector pixel can be determined according to the camera-projection coordinate mapping and spatial pattern coding, where only diffuse surfaces can be illuminated, thus fundamentally preventing the influences of indirect light from the point of view of the light source. The 3-D shapes of diffuse surfaces can be accurately reconstructed in cluttered scenes. Different from traditional reflective properties change or light separation solutions, the proposed method can achieve accurate 3-D perceiving of cluttered scenes without additional hardware or expensive calculation. Extensive experiments verify that the proposed method outperforms the traditional methods in terms of accuracy and robustness.

Adaptive evolution in virulence effectors of the rice blast fungus Pyricularia oryzae.

Plant pathogens secrete proteins called effectors that target host cellular processes to promote disease. Recently, structural genomics has identified several families of fungal effectors that share a similar three-dimensional structure despite remarkably variable amino-acid sequences and surface properties. To explore the selective forces that underlie the sequence variability of structurally-analogous effectors, we focused on MAX effectors, a structural family of effectors that are major determinants of virulence in the rice blast fungus Pyricularia oryzae. Using structure-informed gene annotation, we identified 58 to 78 MAX effector genes per genome in a set of 120 isolates representing seven host-associated lineages. The expression of MAX effector genes was primarily restricted to the early biotrophic phase of infection and strongly influenced by the host plant. Pangenome analyses of MAX effectors demonstrated extensive presence/absence polymorphism and identified gene loss events possibly involved in host range adaptation. However, gene knock-in experiments did not reveal a strong effect on virulence phenotypes suggesting that other evolutionary mechanisms are the main drivers of MAX effector losses. MAX effectors displayed high levels of standing variation and high rates of non-synonymous substitutions, pointing to widespread positive selection shaping the molecular diversity of MAX effectors. The combination of these analyses with structural data revealed that positive selection acts mostly on residues located in particular structural elements and at specific positions. By providing a comprehensive catalog of amino acid polymorphism, and by identifying the structural determinants of the sequence diversity, our work will inform future studies aimed at elucidating the function and mode of action of MAX effectors.

Adsorption features of pigments onto iron oxides: Co-effect of the molecular structure of adsorbates and the varied surface properties of minerals

The knowledge about the adsorption properties of pigments onto different iron oxide minerals is still limited. The adsorption behaviors of three typical pigments, including amaranth (AR), tartrazine (TA), and brilliant blue (BB), onto three iron oxides (ferrihydrite, goethite, and hematite) were investigated. The primary mechanism of their interactions was the electrostatic attraction. The affinities of iron oxides toward any pigment were generally in the sequence of ferrihydrite > goethite > hematite (e.g., the maximum adsorption amounts (qmax) of AR onto the three iron oxides were 35.5 mg/g, 11.6 mg/g, and 4.2 mg/g, respectively), which was related to the differences in physicochemical properties of minerals (e.g., specific surface area, surface hydroxyl density, and crystal structure). Interestingly, for a given iron oxide, the pigment-binding capacity of the mineral was in the order of AR > TA > BB. This effect was attributed to variations in pigment molecular sizes and electrostatic interactions between pigments and minerals. The pigment-binding capabilities of iron oxides changed as the solution pH varied. Hydrogen-bonding and electrostatic interactions were the main mechanisms below and above pH > pHPZC (pH value at zero point charge), respectively. Furthermore, adding Cu2+ facilitated pigment adsorption, mainly stemming from the surface-bridging effect. Pigments also enhanced Cu2+ adsorption onto iron oxides due to the decreasing electrostatic repulsion between Cu2+ and particles as well as the complexion between Cu2+ with pigment molecules adsorbed on mineral surfaces. The insightful information demonstrates that ubiquitous iron oxide minerals can affect the fate of pigments in natural environments.

Enhancing Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Cell Separation with Selective Fibronectin Coating and Topographical Modification on Polydimethylsiloxane Scaffold Platforms.

The extracellular matrix (ECM) serves as a complex scaffold with diverse physical dimensions and surface properties influencing NPC cell migration. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), a widely used biocompatible material, is hydrophobic and undesirable for cell seeding. Thus, the establishment of a biomimetic model with varied topographies and surface properties is essential for effective NPC43 cell separation from NP460 cells. This study explored how ECM surface properties influence NP460 and NPC43 cell behaviors via plasma treatments and chemical modifications to alter the platform surface. In addition to the conventional oxygen/nitrogen (O2/N2) plasma treatment, O2 and argon plasma treatments were utilized to modify the platform surface, which increased the hydrophilicity of the PDMS platforms, resulting in enhanced cell adhesion. (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane and fibronectin (FN) were used to coat the PDMS platforms uniformly and selectively. The chemical coatings significantly affected cell motility and spreading, as cells exhibited faster migration, elongated cell shapes, and larger spreading areas on FN-coated surfaces. Furthermore, narrower top layer trenches with 5 µm width and a lower concentration of 10 µg/mL FN were coated selectively on the platforms to limit NP460 cell movements and enhance NPC43 cell separation efficiency. A significantly high separation efficiency of 99.4% was achieved on the two-layer scaffold platform with 20/5 µm wide ridge/trench (R/T) as the top layer and 40/10 µm wide R/T as the bottom layer, coupling with 10 µg/mL FN selectively coated on the sidewalls of the top and bottom layers. This work demonstrated an innovative application of selective FN coating to direct cell behavior, offering a new perspective to probe into the subtleties of NPC cell separation efficiency. Moreover, this cost-effective and compact microsystem sets a new benchmark for separating cancer cells.

Influence of deep penetrating sealer on concrete surface performance

Deep penetrating sealer (DPS) is a general term for a class of waterproofing agent that can fill the internal pores of concrete; it is produced by mixing an alkali metal silicate solution as the base material with catalysts and additives. The objective of this study was to investigate the characteristics and mechanism of the effect of different amounts of DPS sprayed on concrete. The water absorption, hydrophilicity, permeability, microhardness, abrasion erosion resistance and pore structure of concrete were tested at different water/cement ratios and amounts of sprayed DPS. The test and analysis results showed that, compared with a control concrete, concrete absorbed less water and exhibited less permeability after being sprayed with DPS. Moreover, the hydrophilicity, microhardness and abrasion erosion resistance improved, while the pore volume significantly decreased. The effect was more evident when the amount of sprayed DPS was higher. This study provides a reference for practical engineering applications by demonstrating the variation in concrete surface properties after spraying different amounts of DPS.
