Boreal and Lusitanian species display trophic niche variation in temperate waters.

Climate change has non-linear impacts on species distributions and abundance that have cascading effects on ecosystem structure and function. Among them are shifts in trophic interactions within communities. Sites found at the interface between two or more biogeographical regions, where species with diverse thermal preferenda are assembled, are areas of strong interest to study the impact of climate change on communities' interactions. This study examined variation in trophic structure in the Celtic Sea, a temperate environment that hosts a mixture of cold-affiliated Boreal species and warm-affiliated Lusitanian species. Using carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios, trophic niche area, width, and position were investigated for 10 abundant and commercially important demersal fish species across space and time. In general, the niches of Boreal species appear to be contracting while those of Lusitanian species expand, although there are some fluctuations among species. These results provide evidence that trophic niches can undergo rapid modifications over short time periods (study duration: 2014-2021) and that this process may be conditioned by species thermal preferenda. Boreal species displayed spatial variation in trophic niche width and seem to be facing increased competition with Lusitanian species for food resources. These findings underscore the need to utilize indicators related to species trophic ecology to track the ecosystem alterations induced by climate change. Such indicators could reveal that the vulnerability of temperate ecosystems is currently being underestimated.

Spatial and temporal variations in trophic structure of fish assemblages in the Yellow Sea revealed by C and N stable isotopes

In this study, we assessed spatial and temporal variations in the trophic structure of fish assemblages in the Yellow Sea during spring and summer 2022 and compared their isotopic niches between the Provisional Measure Zone (PMZ) and Korea's west areas (non-PMZ) within the Yellow Sea. Spatial and temporal differences in the diversity and dominant species of fish assemblages were found between the PMZ and non-PMZ areas between the seasons. The mean δ13C values of fish assemblages were relatively higher in the non-PMZ areas than in the PMZ areas. In contrast, no significant differences were found in the mean δ15N values between the areas. Generally, the isotopic niche indices were relatively narrow in the PMZ areas compared to those in the non-PMZ areas. Overall, these spatial differences between the PMZ and non-PMZ areas suggest different trophic diversity of fish assemblages, resulting from site-specific variations in environmental conditions and community composition.

Seasonal variation in trophic structure and community niche dynamics of an Arctic coastal community of marine vertebrates

Temporal variation in food web structure is widespread among highly seasonal environments, such as the Arctic, and is driven by changes in resource availability. Variation in resource availability can lead to species differences in diet composition, isotopic niche width, and trophic position (TP) across seasons. Here, we used tissue samples that represent two distinct turnover rates for diet (liver = shorter term, muscle = longer term) from 18 fish and three marine mammal species to investigate seasonal (i) variation in TPs within the Southampton Island marine ecosystem of Hudson Bay, (ii) variation in consumer isotopic niche width within this part of the food web, and (iii) variation in community niche dynamics among a fish and marine mammal community using stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope analyses. Many zooplanktivores and piscivores increased in TP in summer (i.e., shorter-term turnover period), whereas benthic feeders dependent on ice-obligate prey decreased in TP. Most isotopic niche widths and community metrics (δ15N range, total ellipse area, mean centroid distance) were higher in liver than muscle. Our findings demonstrate seasonal changes in TPs, which suggests that Arctic communities may be differentially affected by longer ice-free periods and earlier onset of primary production due to accelerated climate change.

Seasonal variation in trophic structure and restoration effects in a deep perialpine lake (Lake Lugano, Switzerland and Italy)

Using monitoring data from the South Basin of Lake Lugano (Switzerland and Italy), we examined seasonal responses of phytoplankton and herbivorous zooplankton biomass to nearly three decades (1989–2017) of phosphorus (P) management to ask: [1] what is the trophic structure of the lake, [2] whether trophic structure and the effects of nutrient management varied seasonally, and [3] what are the implications of the existent trophic structure for the restoration of the lake. Trophic structure varied seasonally, including a structure consistent with strong consumer control (exploitation food chain) in spring and fall, and an unexpected structure in summer, characterized by a negative correlation between phytoplankton biomass and phosphorus. This structure was explained by accumulation of inedible phytoplankton (mainly cyanobacteria) at low P concentrations. Owing to a lack of apparent resource (P) control, P-management had no detectable effects on phytoplankton biomass. The trophic structures identified in the lake provides explanations for this lack of response to P-management and for the differences between the responses of the South Basin of Lake Lugano and other perialpine lakes. Based on the results, lake restoration practice would benefit from a greater understanding and an increased ability to predict trophic structure within and across lakes.

Spatial variation in trophic structure of nearshore fishes in Lake Michigan as it relates to water clarity

Nearshore water clarity, as measured by remotely sensed Kd(490), and stable C and N isotopes of several nearshore fishes differed across the Lake Michigan basin. Values of δ13C of round goby (Neogobius melanstomus), yellow perch (Perca flavescens), and spottail shiner (Notropis hudsonis) were depleted in the southeast where water clarity was low relative to the southwest where water clarity was greater. Bayesian analyses were used to evaluate spatial variation in diet composition and quantify the relationship between water clarity and the proportional importance of pelagic energy in fish diets. Water clarity in nearshore areas is likely related to variable riverine inputs, resuspension, and upwelling processes. While these processes may not directly impact δ13C or δ15N of nearshore fishes, we hypothesize that water clarity differentially affects benthic and pelagic algal production. Lower water clarity in the benthos and subsequently lower benthic productivity may be related to regional diet differences and increased reliance on pelagic energy sources. Mobile fishes such as alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus) may not be in isotopic equilibrium with regional prey sources and depart from spatial patterns observed in other nearshore fishes.

Seasonal variation in trophic structure of fish community in Minjiang Estuary based on stable isotope technique.

To study the trophic structure of fish community in Minjiang Estuary, we measured the carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N) of common fish species sampled in winter (January), spring (May), summer (August) and autumn (November) of 2015 by trawling, as well as seven quantitative metrics (ratios range of δ15N, NR; ratios range of δ13C, CR; total area, TA; standard ellipse area, SEAc; average distance of centroid, CD; mean nearest neighbor distance, MNND; standard deviation of nearest neighbor distance, SDNND). The results showed significant differences of δ13C values among all the seasons except between summer and autumn. There were significant differences of δ15N values between spring and other three seasons but no significant difference among summer, autumn, and winter. According to the results of the seven quantitative metrics, trophic structure of common fish community remarkably varied among the four seasons, as TA, SEAc, CR, NR, CD and MNND increased in succession from summer, autumn, winter to spring. Our results indicated that seasonal differences in trophic structure of common fish community were related to the fish spawning migration and the diversity of food source.

A Seasonally Dynamic Estuarine Ecosystem Provides a Diverse Prey Base for Elasmobranchs

Tropical river and estuarine food webs sustain diverse biodiversity values and are important sources of nutrients and energy for connected aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. High-order predators, such as euryhaline elasmobranchs, play critical roles in these food webs, but a lack of detailed information on food web structure limits our ability to manage these species within their ecosystems. We analysed stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotopes (SI) and fatty acid (FA) biochemical tracers from putative prey species in the estuary of the South Alligator River, northern Australia. These were compared with existing data on four species of elasmobranch from the system to examine food web structure and infer dietary linkages over wet and dry seasons along an environmental gradient of sites. Layman’s SI community metrics indicated that upstream food webs had the greatest trophic diversity, and analyses of FAs revealed distinct prey habitat associations that changed seasonally. Mixing models of SI indicated that most Glyphis glyphis and Glyphis garricki had similar freshwater and mid-river diets whilst Carcharhinus leucas and Rhizoprionodon taylori had largely marine signatures. Multivariate analyses of FA revealed some intraspecific differences, although specialisation indices suggested that the four shark species are trophic generalists. Our results show that riverine food webs can display complex spatiotemporal variations in trophic structure and that coastal and euryhaline mobile elasmobranchs forage in a range of coastal and freshwater habitats, demonstrating their influence on these food webs.

Spatial Variation in Trophic Structure of Dominant Fish Species in Lake Dongting, China during Dry Season

Understanding trophic interactions in food webs is crucial to revealing the transfer of substances and energy from primary food sources to consumers in aquatic ecosystems. We hypothesize that the trophic structure of consumers can be significantly affected by primary food sources (pelagic, benthic, and littoral sources) through complex trophic interactions. This study used stable isotope analysis and Bayesian mixing models to estimate the trophic levels of fish consumers and the contributions of primary food sources in the three sub-lakes (Eastern, Southern, and Western Dongting) of Lake Dongting, which have different physical and chemical parameters of water, fish species diversity, and plankton (phytoplankton and zooplankton) density. Results showed the differences in community structures of fish among sub-lakes. Fish trophic levels were significantly higher in Eastern Dongting than those in the two other areas. The contributions of primary food sources to fishes were as follows: the pelagic source was the main basal food source in Eastern Dongting, and littoral and pelagic sources played equally essential roles in Southern Dongting; fishes in Western Dongting relied on more benthic source to growth than those in the two other regions. This study can fill gaps in our knowledge of the influence of the underlying food available on trophic structure of consumers by exploring the role of primary food sources and making the trophic structure of consumers in the aquatic food web highly complicated and diverse through control of the distribution of primary food sources.

Human activities as a driver of spatial variation in the trophic structure of fish communities on Pacific coral reefs.

Anthropogenic activities such as land-use change, pollution and fishing impact the trophic structure of coral reef fishes, which can influence ecosystem health and function. Although these impacts may be ubiquitous, they are not consistent across the tropical Pacific Ocean. Using an extensive database of fish biomass sampled using underwater visual transects on coral reefs, we modelled the impact of human activities on food webs at Pacific-wide and regional (1,000s-10,000skm) scales. We found significantly lower biomass of sharks and carnivores, where there were higher densities of human populations (hereafter referred to as human activity); however, these patterns were not spatially consistent as there were significant differences in the trophic structures of fishes among biogeographic regions. Additionally, we found significant changes in the benthic structure of reef environments, notably a decline in coral cover where there was more human activity. Direct human impacts were the strongest in the upper part of the food web, where we found that in a majority of the Pacific, the biomass of reef sharks and carnivores were significantly and negatively associated with human activity. Finally, although human-induced stressors varied in strength and significance throughout the coral reef food web across the Pacific, socioeconomic variables explained more variation in reef fish trophic structure than habitat variables in a majority of the biogeographic regions. Notably, economic development (measured as GDP per capita) did not guarantee healthy reef ecosystems (high coral cover and greater fish biomass). Our results indicate that human activities are significantly shaping patterns of trophic structure of reef fishes in a spatially nonuniform manner across the Pacific Ocean, by altering processes that organize communities in both "top-down" (fishing of predators) and "bottom-up" (degradation of benthic communities) contexts.

Variation in isotopic trophic structure and fish diversity in mangrove systems subject to different levels of habitat modification in the Gulf of California, Mexico

Anthropogenic modification of mangrove systems can lead to decreased habitat quality, potentially affecting food web structure and ecosystem function. Based on carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes, we evaluated the trophic structure of the fish communities from three mangrove systems in southern Baja California, Mexico, subject to varying levels of habitat modification. We hypothesized that anthropogenic habitat modification leads to differences in niche space (and hence trophic structure). We applied a Bayesian approach to the calculation of community level isotope-based metrics of functional trophic structure and compared the results to a structural (Shannon-Wiener) index of diversity. Frequency distributions of stable isotope ratios revealed differences between the highly modified mangrove system and those with limited or no habitat modification. Comparison of the isotopic composition of the dominant fish species sampled in summer and winter indicated limited seasonal differences in this arid region. However, isotope-derived metrics of niche space were evaluated in the most highly modified mangrove system, suggesting a greater complexity in nutrient and primary production sources, a higher level of dietary specialization, and low functional redundancy. Fishes from the most pristine mangrove system exhibited highest diversity, a more limited range of isotopic values, and smaller measures of isotopic niche space, indicative of higher trophic redundancy. Comparison of the standardized (baseline-controlled) species-specific isotope ratios indicated that in 37% of cases isotopic differences persisted, further supporting our interpretation of variations in trophic structure. This research highlights that mangrove habitat modification has a marked influence on functional trophic diversity, as well as the fish community structure.

Trophic structure of benthic resources and consumers varies across a regulated floodplain wetland

Riverine food webs are often laterally disconnected (i.e. between watercourses) in regulated floodplain wetlands for prolonged periods. We compared the trophic structure of benthic resources and consumers (crustaceans and fish) of the three watercourses in a regulated floodplain wetland (the Gwydir Wetlands, Australia) that shared the same source water but were laterally disconnected. The crustaceans Cherax destructor (yabby), Macrobrachium australiense (freshwater prawn), the exotic fish Cyprinus carpio (European carp) and Carassius auratus (goldfish) showed significantly different δ13C values among the watercourses, suggesting spatial differences in primary carbon sources. Trophic positions were estimated by using δ15N values of benthic organic matter as the base of the food web in each watercourse. The estimated trophic positions and gut contents showed differences in trophic positions and feeding behaviours of consumers between watercourses, in particular for Melanotaenia fluviatilis (Murray–Darling rainbowfish) and M. australiense. Our findings suggest that the observed spatial variation in trophic structure appears to be largely related to the spatial differences in the extent and type of riparian vegetation (i.e. allochthonous carbon source) across the floodplain that most likely constituted part of the benthic resources.

Food web structure affects the extinction risk of species in ecological communities

This paper studies the effect of food web structure on the extinction risk of species. We examine 793 different six-species food web structures with different number, position and strength of trophic links and expose them to stochasticity in a model with Lotka–Volterra predator–prey dynamics. The characteristics of species (intrinsic rates of increase as well as intraspecific density dependence) are held constant, but the interactions with other species and characteristics of the food web are varied. Extinctions of producer species occurred but were rare. Species at all trophic levels went extinct in communities with strong interactions as compared to communities with no strong interactions where only the secondary consumer went extinct. Extinction of a species directly involved in a strong interaction was more frequent than extinctions of species not directly involved in strong interactions (here termed direct and indirect extinctions, respectively). In model webs where both direct and indirect extinctions occurred, roughly 20% were indirect extinctions. The probability of indirect extinctions decreased with number of links. It is concluded that not just the presence of strong interactions but also their position and direction can have profound effects on extinction risk of species. Three principal components, based on 11 different food web metrics, explained 76.6% of the variation in trophic structure among food webs that differed in the number and position, but not strength, of trophic links. The extinction risk of consumer species was closely correlated to at least two of the three principal components, indicating that extinction risk of consumer species were affected by food web structure. The existence of a relationship between food web structure and extinction risk of a species was confirmed by a regression tree analysis and a complementary log-linear analysis. These analyses showed that extinction of consumer species were affected by the position of strong interactions and a varying number of other food web metrics, different for intermediate and top species. Furthermore, the degree to which the equilibrium abundance of a species is affected by a press perturbation is an indication of the risk of extinction that this species faces when exposed to environmental stochasticity. It is concluded that extinction risk of a species is determined in a complicated way by an interaction among species characteristics, food web structure and the type of disturbance.

Geographical variations in the trophic structure of the plankton community along a eutrophic–mesotrophic–oligotrophic transect

The geographical variations in trophic structure of the plankton community, as defined by total and relative carbon biomass of phytoplankton (PP), bacteria (BA), heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF), microzooplankton (MZ), and herbivorous (HNZ) and carnivorous net‐zooplankton (CNZ), were investigated along an inshore–offshore transect from the innermost part of Osaka Bay to the Pacific Ocean off Kii Channel, Japan, in June 1991. Based on physico‐chemical properties of the water and topographical features, the transect was divided into three trophic areas, i.e. eutrophic, mesotrophic and oligotrophic ones. The average carbon biomass of the total plankton community was highest (438 mg m−3) in the inshore eutrophic area, and declined steeply offshore (141 and 26.6 mg m−3 in the mesotrophic and oligotrophic areas, respectively). In the offshore oligotrophic area, the relative biomass of BA to PP and the relative biomass of small heterotrophs (i.e. BA, HNF and MZ) to the total heterotrophs were higher than in the other areas, indicating that the microbial food chain predominated. In the mesotrophic area, the biomass of HNZ (primarily copepods) was conspicuously high, even higher than that of PP, suggesting that the traditional grazing food chain prevailed. Because of this short food chain, a productive fishing ground is formed there. In the eutrophic area, the biomass of HNZ was much smaller relative to the enormous biomass of PP, indicating that a considerable amount of primary production was not utilized directly by the metazoan zooplankton. However, the relative contribution of the small heterotrophs to the total heterotrophs’ biomass was higher in this area, as in the oligotrophic area.

Variations in the fish catch composition in the Bay of St. Vincent, New Caledonia, as determined by experimental trawling

An experimental trawl survey was conducted in the Bay of St Vincent between December 1984 and April 1986. In all, 85 hauls were performed during four cruises. The trawled fish represented 233 species and 59 families. Biomass and density estimates declined 13-fold between the first and last cruises. This decline is not due to the survey catch (less than 2% of the biomass of the bay), nor is it likely to be due to trawling-induced changes in habitat. Natural causes are the most likely reason for the decline. The r-type species (Leiognathidae, Lethrinus nematacanthus) had the largest population fluctuations, whilst longer living and later reproducing species (Saurida undosquamis, large Upeneus spp.) had the smallest. Trophic structure is studied using three expressions: number of species, biomass and density per trophic group. Number of species per trophic group was the most insensitive to changes in time and place, with density being the most sensitive. Study of the variations in trophic structure could help with the monitoring of major changes in fish populations caused by fishing or environmental changes.

Trophic Structure, Reproductive Success, and Growth Rate of Fishes in a Natural and Modified Headwater Stream

The impact of removing riparian vegetation, channel straightening, and fluctuations in flow regime on trophic structure, reproductive success, and growth rate of fishes was assessed in a natural (Jordan Creek (JC)) and modified (Big Ditch (BD)) headwater stream in east-central Illinois. Shallow habitats and organic substrates increased more in BD than JC during low flow periods in summer. Insect densities in JC were highest in late spring, declining to low levels by late summer. Insect densities in BD were high throughout summer. Fish in JC were predominantly benthic insectivores and insectivore–piscivores; trophic structure, age structure, and biomass were stable between years and seasons; recruits made up a small and stable portion of community biomass and were primarily insectivore–piscivores and generalized insectivores; younger age-classes were in shallow riffle habitats. Adult fish and recruits in BD were predominantly generalized insectivores, omnivores, and herbivore–detritivores; the last two were primarily mid-river species (Carpoides cyprinus and Dorosoma cepedianum). Considerable seasonal and annual variation in trophic structure, total biomass, and age structure occurred in BD associated with annual fluctuations in flow regime, abundance of organic substrates, and reproductive success of mid-river species. Younger age-classes had higher summer growth rates in BD than JC. The temporally variable physical environment and unstable autotrophic energy base created in modified headwater streams are probably major factors responsible for recent shifts in large river fish communities in the midwestern United States from insectivore and insectivore–piscivore species to omnivores and herbivore–detritivores.Key words: community organization, fishes, Illinois, stream continuum, stream alteration, trophic ecology, warmwater stream
