A reappraisal of theBebearia mardaniacomplex (Lepidoptera Nymphalidae)

Even after revisional papers by HECQ (1988) and HANCOCK (1992) the taxonomy of the mardania complex of the genus Bebearia Hemming 1960 remains confused largely because of their disagreement over the figures in Jones' Icones depicting the FABRICIUS (1793) types of mardania and cocalia. HANCOCK regarded these two taxa as representing the two sexes of the same species, mardania, but more critical examination agrees with HECQ'S view that the figures indeed represent different species, mardania being synonymous with theognis (Hewitson 1864) and cocalia with mardania sensu Hancock. Consideration of facies, wing venation, male and especially female genitalia establishes true relationships and leads to recognition of five species in the complex. B. mardania, B. cocalia and B. cocalioides Hecq 1988 are reinstated as species as originally described. B. orientis (Karsch 1895) is also confirmed as a good species and B. dealbata (Carcasson 1958) and B. taveta Clifton in D'Abrera 1980 transferred to it as subspecies. one new species is described as B. paludicola, a name originally used to describe the female as an aberration of Euryphene mardania auct. and thus now available. The forms B. senegalensis (Herrich-Schäffer 1858), B. guineensis (Felder & Felder 1867), B. badiana (Rebel 1914), B. katera (van Someren 1939) and B. continenta- lis Hecq 1988 are retained as subspecies of B. cocalia, but their status is still not satisfactorily resolved. Three new subspecies are described, namely, B. cocalioides hecqi, B. paludicola blandi and B. orientis malawiensis.

Development and Refinement of a Measure for Assessing the Acceptability of Assessment Methods: The Assessment Rating Profile-Revised

This paper describes the development and psychometric properties of the Assessment Rating Profile-Revised (ARP-R), an instrument designed to evaluate the acceptability of assessment methods. First, an overview of the initial exploratory work on the original scale, the Assessment Rating Profile (APR; Kratochwill & Van Someren, 1984), is provided. Research examining the reliability and validity of the ARP is reviewed and psychometric inadequacies are highlighted. Next, the results of a study examining the psychometric properties of the revised measure are reported. The results of the study indicated that the ARP-R demonstrated good internal consistency, with coefficients ranging from .94 to .99. Test-retest reliability across 1-, 3-, 6-, and 12-month intervals rangedfrom .82 to .85, suggesting adequate stability over time. Confirmatory factor analytic procedures indicated a reasonable fit of the data to the proposed one-factor model, “General Assessment Acceptability.” Lastly, suggestions are made regarding use of the ARP-R in applied and research settings.

AbstractThe two panels in the Rijksmuseum depicting the Saint r'lizabeth Flood, attributed to the Master of the Saint Elizabeth Panels, show the inundation which afflicted Dordrecht on the eve of Saint Elizabeth's Day, November 19 1421, the saint in question being Elizabeth of Hungary. The panels, which date from circa *1470, originally flanked an altarpiece, the middie section of which has been lost. When closed, they showcd Saint Elizabeth's Flood (figs. I and 2), and when opencd on high days, they revealed episodes from the life of Saint Elizabeth (figs. 3 and 4). Both wings have been sawn down the middle, halving their thickness and producing four panels. Notably in the figures, a stylistic difference can be observed between Saint Elizabeth's Flood and the scenes of the saints's life. A possible reason for the difference is that the painter was the inventor of the representation on the outside of the panels, whereas the scenes on what was originally the inside were based on iconographic types. Infra-red reflectographic examination leads to the deduction that he was the inventor. The montage shows a fluently rendered underdrawing beneath the landscape (fig.11). There are no people or animals in the underdrawing; they were only executed in paint. The staffage must therefore have been added later. This is not the method of an imitator, but is typical of the inventor. A second argument in favour of a single hand is the difference in importance of the inside and outside of the panels. Greater care may have been lavished on the inside of the altarpiece, which was only visible on holy days. Correspondences in the underdrawing on the original inside and outside also suggest one hand. It is of course conceivable tllat the actual painting was carried out by another artist from the same studio. The 1421 flood has been depicted several times. The renderings show either the moment at which the dike gave way at Wieldrecht (figs. 1 and 2, and figs. 8 and 9), or the situation after the breach, when large tracts of land were inundated (figs. 5, 6 and 7). Virtually all the representations identify the villagcs and rivers, sometimes adding an explanatory text. Such is the case with a hithertm unpublished copy on canvas (fig. 8), to which two cartouches have been added in the sky. The one on the left contains the chronogram 'WIELDRECHT MACH WATERS BECLAGHEN' (Wieldrecht suffering from water). The same text occurs on a panel of circa 1620, showing the local situation shortly after the dike burst (fig. 5). The Rijksmuseum's panels of Saint Elizabetb's Floud and scenes from the saint's life were taken from the Grote Kerk in Dordrecht to the militia headquarters at the St. Christoffel- or Heclhaaksdoelen in 1572 in the wake of the Reformation. Seventeenth-century inventories list 'd'lnundatie van Wieldrecht...'. The special relationship between Wieldrecht and the altar is illustrated by the following events. Those villagers of Wieldrecht who survived the flood moved to Dordrecht. In 1438 they went to the reeve to have a document drawn up regarding an altar which had been assigned to them by the churchwardens of the Grote Kerk. They had managed to save two bells and the font from their own church. In exchange for these they were given an altar dedicated to Saint Lambrecnt, set against a column on the south side of the church. An unpublished chronicle of Dordrecht, ascrihed to Cornelis van Someren, states that the Saint Lambrecht altar was 'furnished' with a large painting of the Flixabeth Flood. This .must have been the Saint Elizabeth's Flood which had been taken to the militia headquarters from the Grote Kerk after tbe Reformation and is now in the Rijksmuseum. The altarpiece must therefore have been donated by one or more Wieldrecht villagers. it was ordered in memory of the disaster which had struck the village and in gratitude to Saint Elizabeth for having rescued the survivors. The specific iconography is directly linked with these donor(s). It was at Wieldrecht that the dike gave way, and that is the exact moment depicted on the panels. In this context, thc chronogram and the emphasis on Wieldrecht in later descriptions of the panels are now understandable.

Sleep and Nasal Obstruction

To the Editor.— Many of the numerous theories that have recently been advanced to account for respiratory failure in infancy have failed to establish a single persuasive cause for this disaster and have ignored some of the early and perhaps significant proposals to account for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The recent article by van Someren and Stothers1 at least refers to one possible etiology that I have always believed. During the early months of life, most infants breathe via the nasal passage.

Misconceptions About Sleep

To the Editor.— It was with interest that we read the article on obstructive apnea in human infants by van Someren and Stothers.1 We would, however, like to correct some of the misconceptions concerning our work. We did not find that "the only difference between `near miss SIDS infants' and control groups was an increased frequency of short 3- to 6-second periods of mixed and obstructive apnea in the high risk group." As written in Pediatrics,2 we found that "the total number of mixed and obstructive apnea greater than 3 seconds during total sleep time, between 3 weeks and 4½ months statistically differentiated the two groups."

Presence of two forms of fumarase (fumarate hydratase E.C. 4.2.1.2) in mammalian cells: Immunological characterization and genetic analysis in somatic cell hybrids. Confirmation of the assignment of a gene necessary for the enzyme expression to human chromosome 1

Two major forms of fumarate hydratase have been resolved in extracts prepared from a wide variety of mammalian cells by electrophoresis. Fractionation experiments with human and mouse cells suggest that one form (the slower migrating) is localized in the mitochondria, whereas the other form is predominant in the cytoplasm. Analysis of the segregation of the enzyme forms in human-mouse somatic cell hybrids indicates that a gene(s) necessary for the expression of both forms can be assigned to human chromosome 1(confirmation of a previous assignment by van Someren et al., 1974). Electrophoretic analysis suggests that the two forms may be interrelated. Furthermore, they both exhibit identical reactivity toward anti-fumarate hydratase antiserum. It is suggested that a modification of one form may occur in vivo and that the modification may be important in determining the intracellular localization of the enzyme.

Association between Blackflies (Simuliidae) and Prawns (Atyidae), with a Discussion of the Phoretic Habit in Simuliids

African blackflies are well known to form phoretic associations with river crabs and mayfly nymphs (e.g. Van Someren & McMahon 1950). Extensive searches for other phoretic associations have, until recently, revealed instances only of casual phoresy by normally free-living Simulium larvae, such as those reported on dragonfly nymphs (Lewis et al. 1960). Several workers have suspected river prawns of being associated with blackflies but have been unable to discover Simulium larvae on such prawns in Africa: thus Raybould & Yagunga (1967) examined numbers of Macrobrachium lepidactylus Hilgendorf with negative results. Recently, however, two species of blackfly have been reported (Disney 1969) living in association with the prawn Atya africana Bouvier (of the family Atyidae) near Kumba in the forest zone of West Cameroon. Both of these species proved to be previously undescribed and have been named Simulium dukei Lewis, Disney & Crosskey (1969) and S. atyophilum Lewis & Disney (1969). It may be noted that females of S. dukei had been previously recorded biting man near Kumba by Duke (1962) under the name S. aureosimile Pomeroy. However, Dr D. J. Lewis and Dr R. W. Crosskey, who had originally named Dr Duke's specimens, withdrew their assignation following a reexamination of the material (Lewis & Crosskey 1962), and concluded that it was probably an undescribed species which, for lack of pupae and/or male material, could not be certainly identified. It was a search for such material that led to the discovery of the blackflies associated with prawns. (The true S. aureosimile has recently been recorded from Mount Cameroon-Lewis and Disney 1970.) Further examination of prawns near Kumba has revealed S. atyophilum on Atya scabra (Leach), which is much less common than A. africana. Other species of prawn have been examined with negative results. More than 400 Macrobrachium vollenhovenii (Herklots), many specimens of several other species of palaemonid prawns and numerous caridinid prawns have been examined with negative results. (Vogel & Crewe (1965) listed the names of some of the prawn species to be found near Kumba.) The following account is based on the notes from a survey primarily designed to obtain adequate material for clarification of taxonomic problems. Prawns were collected from October 1968 to May 1969.

Dual Singing by New Guinea Birds

A relatively uncommon but intriguing form of bird song, the significance of which is imperfectly understood, is synchronized duetting between a mated male and female. Most reports of birds engaging in this come from the tropics, with examples from Central America (Skutch, 1940), South America (Haverschmidt, 1947), Africa (Moreau, 1941; Thorpe, 1963; Grimes, 1966), Madagascar (van Someren, 1947), and Malaya (Young, 1942). A few examples from the temperate zone have also come to light among owls, Himalayan (Osmaston, 1941) and Australian (Robinson, 1947: 14-17) passerines, and the Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) (Collias and Jahn, 1959), Carolina Wren (Thryothorus ludovicianus), and three species of quail (Stokes and Williams, 1968) of North America. A selected list of species may be found in Van Tyne and Berger (1959: 140). The present paper is an analysis of all instances known to us of duetting by New Guinea birds, based largely on our previously unpublished field observations. As it has been suggested that the incidence of duetting may correlate with type of habitat, possibilities for visual contact between singers, or sexual dimorphism of plumage, these points are considered in each species discussed. Duets may be divided conveniently into three categories. (1) The leader (generally the male) sings one phrase, and at its conclusion the second bird (generally the female) sings another phrase. Often the follower begins so precisely upon cessation of the leader's phrase that the result may easily pass for a conventional single song, unless the observer can see the singers or is close enough to hear that different notes come from different places. For example, the Marbled Wood-Quail (Odontophorus gujanensis) calls a rapidly repeated corcorovado, in which corcoro is always sung by one member of a pair and vado by the other (Chapman, 1929: 275; Armstrong, 1963). The term antiphonal singing has been used for this type of duetting, in which male and female sing alternately rather than simultaneously. In this category belong the Central American wrens described by Skutch (1940) and Amaurornis olivaceus, Pitohui kirhocephalus, and Philemon novaeguineae (see below) of New Guinea. (2) Members of a pair sing different phrases simultaneously. The synchronization between the two phrases may nevertheless be very exact; the female may begin only a fraction of a second after the male. In New Guinea the duets of Megapodius freycinet, Campochaera sloetii, and Coracina montana are of this type. (3) The male and female sing virtually identical phrases in unison. Such unison duets are practiced by Centropus toulou (Cuculidae) of Madagascar (van Someren, 1947), Aspatha gularis (Momotidae) of Central

A tick infesting the nostrils of man.

AN interesting example of the necessity for co-operation in the solution of complex problems of tick bionomics was recently brought to my notice by Dr. V. G. L. Van Someren of Nairobi and concerns infestation of the nostrils of man by the immature nymph stage of a tick belonging to the genus Amblyomma. These nymphs are white and were removed from the nostrils of three different persons, namely, Mr. D. Van Someren, Dr. V. G. L. Van Someren and Mr. T. H. E. Jackson, during visits to the depths of primary tropical rain forest in Uganda. The two former-mentioned persons were infested while in the Budongo Forest of Bunyoro during July 1952 ; the two latter while in the Kayonza Forest of Kigezi (known also as the Impenetrable Forest) during May and June 1957. A single example of the same tick was also found by Dr. Van Someren as it crawled up his neck when in the Kibali Forest of Toro.

Quantitative Estimations of Populations of the River Crab, Potamon (Potamonautes) perlatus (M. Edw.), in Rhodesian Trout Streams

THE river crab is the largest invertebrate to occur in Rhodesian trout streams, but standard quantitative sampling methods reveal insignificant numbers of this animal. As has been suggested by Van Someren in Kenya1, it is doubtful if anglers have been correct in assuming that the crab is an important trout-food item. Nevertheless, preliminary Rhodesian studies2 indicate that it occurs in trout stomachs with a median percentage frequency occurrence of 13.1 ; furthermore, there is a 100.0 per cent frequency and 97.5 per cent volumetric occurrence in droppings of the clawless otter, Aonyx capensis Schinz. These figures are based upon slightly more than 1,000 stomach contents, and exactly 1,000 otter samples. In such circumstances the river crab takes on a certain economic standing, even if ignored as a competitor or scavenger.

Sulfonamide Therapy of Trichinized White Mice

In an excellent review Van Someren (1939) presented a list of substances tried for the treatment of trichinosis. None of the substances listed were very satisfactory. McCoy (1938) reported that daily doses of 125 mg. of sulfanilamide were ineffective for the treatment of trichonosis in rats. On the other hand a limited study by McNaught, et al (1939) indicated that sulfanilamide administered in the feed at a 1.6 percent concentration affected a larval reduction of 55.0 percent in rats. In view of this observation Riedel and Lunde (1949) undertook an extensive investigation of sulfanilamide and other sulfonamides of medicinal interest to learn their therapeutic possibilities for the treatment of trichinosis in white mice. Rations containing sulfaypridine, sulfathiazole or sulfadiazine at maximum nontoxic levels were ineffective; sulfaguanidine was indefinite; and a 2.0 percent sulfanilamide ration affected a larval reduction of 54.0 percent. The objective of the present study was to compare the effects of sulfanilamide with sulfamerazine and sulfaquinoxaline upon trichinae, and to note if sulfonamide therapy affected a reduction of the mortality among white mice heavily infected with Trichinella spiralis larvae.

Proposals for International Collaboration in Applied Spectroscopy

AT a meeting held in Paris on October 1, the need for an international organisation to promote spectrochemical analysis was discussed. The meeting followed the eleventh congress of the Groupement pour 1'Avaueement des Méthodes d'Analyse Spectrographique des Produits Métallurgiques. Besides the members of the French committee, spectroscopists representing groups in England and Switzerland were present, with others from Holland and Belgium. Discussion originated in an Italian proposal to form an international society of spectroscopists based on individual membership, and on a French proposal to form an international federation of regional or national societies of spectroscopists. It was reported that the International Council of Scientific Unions might sponsor a mixed commission on spectroscopy to co-ordinate the activities of physicists and astronomers interested in spectra, but that this body is not likely to concern itself with applied spectroscopy. After considering all these proposals, those present decided that in the first place it would be wise to work for a fuller interchange of information and speakers simply between societies in various countries organised to deal with emission or absorption spectra as applied to analysis. A list of such societies or groups and of their secretaries is to be compiled, and will be published in Spectrochimica Acta. This journal, which during 1946-49 was published in the Vatican City, is to be published in London from 1950 onwards. The editor, Ernest van Someren, of 4 Churchfields, Broxbourne, Herts, England, would like to receive the names of spectroscopic societies and of their secretaries, and hopes to be of service in keeping them in touch with the activities of other similar groups.

The Comparative Effect of Some Sulfonamides on Experimental Trichinosis in White Mice

In recent years it was demonstrated that some sulfonamides possess remarkable prophylactic and therapeutic value against certain bacterial and protozoan diseases. In a very able review Van Someren (1939) listed substances tried for the treatment of trichiniasis. None of the substances reported were very satisfactory. Sulfanilamide has been studied in the treatment of trichinosis but the results of the investigators are contradictory. McCoy (1938) presented results taken from two experiments each consisting of experimental and control groups of rats. The experimental rats were treated for 12-16 days with daily doses of 125 mg of sulfanilamide. Chemotherapy began one day after trichinization. When the rats were autopsied 30-60 days after parasitism he found that the sulfanilamide treated rats harbored about as many muscle cysts as the control rats. For a limited study of sulfanilamide therapy in trichinosis McNaught et al (1939a) incorporated sulfanilamide in a ration at a concentration of 1.66 per cent and fed it to rats for 42 days beginning two days prior to trichinization. They found that the four rats fed the sulfanilamide ration harbored only 45 per cent as many muscle larvae as the four control rats fed the same ration without the sulfanilamide.
