FIRST RECORD OF ACIZZIA JAMATONICA (HEMIPTERA: PSYLLIDAE) IN NORTH AMERICA: FRIEND OR FOE?

Mimosa or silk tree ( Albizia julibrissin Durazzini) was introduced from Asia to Europe and then from Europe to North America in the mid eighteenth century (Cothran 2004). While still widely prized for landscaping purposes, the tree has become naturalized and is considered to be an invasive species throughout much of the southeastern United States (Miller 2003). In Sep 2006, one of us (MDU) noticed a group of A. julibrissin trees in Clarke County, Georgia (Athens, Lake Herrick, 33°55.853’N, 083°22.183’W) heavily infested with an unknown psyllid species. The insects were causing considerable stress to the trees with many leaves yellowed, wilted, or missing. Specimens were identified (by Debra Creel & DRM) as Acizzia jamatonica (Kuwayama), an Asian species that was recently found attacking the same tree species in Europe (Alma et al. 2002; EPPO Reporting Service 2002). Acizzia jamatonica , like some other members of the genus (Palmer & Witt 2006), appears to be highly host specific and is thought to feed exclusively on species of Albizia (Alma et al. 2002; EPPO Reporting Service 2002). If it is indeed monophagous, the species is unlikely to pose much risk to native plant species (Van Klinken & Edwards 2002) and may benefit efforts to control A. julibrissin in the southeast. However, with respect to the economic and aesthetic values of A. julibrissin in both Europe and the United States, A. jamatonica might be viewed by many as a harmful pest species (EPPO Reporting Service 2004). Further investigation is needed to better predict the potential biological, economic, and aesthetic impacts of this recent arrival. Acizzia jamatonica is the fourth species of Acizzia to be recorded in the United States. Other species include A. acaciaebaileyanae (Froggatt) first reported in 1987 from California on Acacia , A. hakae Tuthill first reported in 2003 from California on Grevillea , and A. uncatoides (Ferris & Klyver) first reported in 1954 from California on Acacia . The invasive species in California are native to Australia (Gill, personal communication 2006). From an insect's perspective, fruits of many plant species are an ephemeral resource such as carrion (Payne 1965; Tabor et al. 2004), dung (Koskela 1972; Koskela & Hanski 1977) or rotting wood (Fager 1968): all these systems are relatively small and distinct, consist of organic matter and undergo a clear decomposition process, with several stages of decay (Schoenly & Reid 1987), characterized by specific fauna. Frugivorous insects, particularly Diptera, Coleoptera, Hemiptera and Lepidoptera, frequently invade fruits/seeds during development on maternal plants (e.g. Janzen 1969, 1971; Lachaise 1977; Lachaise et al. 1982; Fukumoto & Kajimura 2001); fruit invasion and post-dispersal seed predation continues after fruit falls (Winston 1956; Janzen 1969; Lachaise et al. 1982; van Klinken & Walter 1996).

Physiol Behav 00(0) 000–000, 2006.—This study aimed to determine whether consumption of a mid-morning snack with appropriate energy compensation through a smaller breakfast or lunch, resulted in improved cognitive performance of 7–9 year old children with a low and high socioeconomic status (LSES and HSES, n = 35 and 34 respectively). The children were each randomly assigned to three iso-caloric dietary interventions: control (standard breakfast, no snack and standard lunch), intervention A (small breakfast, snack, and standard lunch) and intervention B (standard breakfast, snack, and small lunch), using a cross-over design. The children were tested on three different days, each one week apart. Computerised tests of cognitive performance, consisting of memory, sustained attention and psychomotor speed, were performed during four sessions, i.e., prior to breakfast, after breakfast, after a mid-morning snack and after lunch. Having a mid-morning snack resulted in a smaller decline in immediate and delayed memory in LSES but not in HSES children. Having a snack did not influence sustained attention and psychomotor speed in either LSES or HSES children. This study shows that a more evenly distributed energy intake throughout the morning by consuming a mid-morning snack improves memory performance in school-age LSES children even when the total amount of energy consumed during the morning is not altered.

Ethnicity in Asia (review)

In a single volume Ethnicity in Asia gives the reader an authoritative and comprehensive overview of ethnicity in the modern states of East and Southeast Asia. The book is particularly concerned with the development of ethnicity in each of these countries, the evolution and impact of state policies toward ethnic minorities, some detailed discussion of the realities of the lives of various ethnic minorities (stronger in some chapters than others), and the sources of ethnic conflict within particular states. The Preface states that Ethnicity in Asia has modest ambitions, aiming "to impart general information and insights into issues relating to ethnicity in East and Southeast Asia." It notes that the book "is not designed as a path-breaking study" but rather to attempts to "provide a scholarly coverage that takes account of the main new ideas," as well as to present some new material, on the topic. Yet the task of bringing together a comprehensive and coherent study of ethnicity in the East and Southeast Asian region is significant, and overall the book fulfills its purpose comprehensively and informatively. Ethnic diversity—whether it is peacefully accommodated or fiercely contested—is indeed one of the defining dilemmas of the modern state, and this book provides a lucid introduction to the various historical, political, cultural, and economic dimensions in each of the country studies. The contributors assembled in this volume are established leading scholars and commentators in their areas of country specialization and on the issue of ethnicity. The diversity of academic disciplines from which they are writing (including political science, anthropology, sociology, and economics) gives the book a sense of breadth that works well with the careful editorial attention given to coherence and coverage of key unifying themes in most of the chapters. Also, each of the chapters follows its own unique format concomitant with the major issues and problems of each country. The Introduction highlights the significance of ethnicity and ethnic conflict in contemporary society and points out the gap in the literature addressing ethnicity as a lens in the study of East and Southeast Asia as a region. It briefly canvasses the implications of majority nationalism and ethnonationalism, outlines the discourse of rights and culture, and examines the meaning of key terms such as "ethnicity," "minority," and "multiculturalism." This general overview of the key concepts informing the subsequent country chapters, and relevant for understanding the region in comparative perspective, could also have included a useful annotated [End Page 78] bibliography at the end—otherwise provided with each of the country chapters—for readers relatively new to recent developments in the theoretical debates. An important theme addressed throughout the book concerns the "invention" of ethnic identities in the context of the modern state and the dynamic formation of majority-minority relations in the different countries studied. Some of the chapters reflect more explicitly upon questions of ethnic discourse and how conflicting aspects of ethnic relations have been managed, contained, or in some cases fought out by military means. Gerry van Klinken, for instance, notes in his excellent chapter that "Ethnicity is nowhere but everywhere in Indonesia." Indeed, Suharto's New Order government avoided mentioning anything "ethnic"; from 130 to 2000 there was no census asking people their ethnic identification, and until recently Indonesia was not among the countries that sprang to mind in studies of ethnic conflict. Yet in Singapore and Malaysia ethnic categories (or "race") have been mobilized very visibly as fundamental components in the state's ideological and economic apparatus. In the case of Thailand, ethnic heterogeneity has been downplayed within the process of nation building, with a collective identity of "Thai-ness" "constituted by shared commonality of language, religion and monarchy." Ovesan and Trankell, in their chapter on Cambodia, highlight the urban-rural dichotomy as a significant dimension of ethnic relations. From Verb to Coordinator in Tetun Catharina van Klinken Abstract The conservative Fehan dialect of Tetun, a Central Malayo-Polynesian language spoken on Timor, has two verbs that have developed into coordinators. As such, they have almost nonoverlapping spheres of operation, reflecting their very different grammaticalization paths. Among other things, hodi is a transitive verb meaning 'bring, use', a prepositional verb introducing instrument noun phrases, and a coordinator of clauses. It is postulated to have derived into a clausal coordinator via a purposive construction, in which the second clause presents the purpose for bringing an item mentioned in the first clause. The other verb, hoo, is a transitive verb meaning 'accompany, be with (person)' and a prepositional verb introducing coactors. The form no, which is argued to originate as a reduced third person singular form of hoo, is a coordinator that is primarily used for coordination of noun phrases. This function of noun-phrase coordinator is presumed to be an extension from its function of introducing coactors. A second set of related usages for hoo is as a transitive verb meaning 'have' and (in its third person singular form noo) as an existential verb. 1. Introduction. The Fehan dialect of Tetun, a Central Malayo-Polynesian language spoken on Timor, has two verbs that have developed into both prepositional verbs and coordinators.1 These are hodi 'bring, take' and hoo 'accompany, be with (person)'. In this paper, we look at the various uses of these two words and consider how their functions as prepositional verbs and as coordinators could have developed historically from their uses as verbs. We conclude that the path from verb to coordinator is very different in the two cases, and that the differential origins of the two coordinators correlates with the very different restrictions on their use. While the grammaticalization of hoo is consistent with patterns observed in other languages, the development of a verb meaning 'bring' from verb to clause coordinator is, as far as I am aware, not documented elsewhere. [End Page 350] The two sets of uses are summarized in table 1. Note that noo (in the rightmost column) is the 3s inflection of hoo, with no being a phonologically reduced form of it. Justification for treating these as diachronic extensions of hoo is presented below. The underlying assumption in this paper is that the range of meanings of each word has come about as a process of grammaticalization, the process whereby words that once had concrete meanings and belonged to open word classes (such as verbs) take on more generalized meanings and the grammatical characteristics of closed classes (such as prepositions or coordinators). During this process, older usages are often retained after newer ones are introduced, with the result that a single word can have a chain of related uses. In this paper, we first present a brief orientation to Tetun clause-level grammar, then propose how hodi and hoo may have developed from verbs into prepositional verbs and coordinators. Other uses of these two words are also presented briefly for completeness. 2. Overview of Tetun Grammar. Tetun transitive clauses have the default constituent order of subject-verb-object. Both subject and object are readily omitted if they can be interpreted from context; in texts the object is omitted in about 35 percent of cases. The object can alternatively be fronted as topic. Verbs take subject-marking under certain conditions. In particular, verbs that in the citation form begin with h take a subject prefix that replaces this initial consonant. The subject markers are 1S k-, 2S m-, 3S n-, and 3P r- (or sometimes n- as per the neighboring dialect); there is no subject marking for 1P.EXCL, 1P.INCL, and 2P subjects.2 Verbs that begin with consonants other than h are inflected only for 1S subjects, by means of a prefix k- (e.g., ha'u k-mai '1S 1S-come' = 'I (am) coming'). Comment: Use of stable isotopes to determine diets of living and extinct bears

Notes 2300 Isotopic biogeochemistry of ancient bon collagen is a powerful tool for determining the diet of extinct species. It has been increasingly widely used during the last few years (e.g., Bocherens et al. 1994; Matheus 1995; Grocke and Bocherens 1996). This seemingly simple approach is nonetheless useful only when basic requirements are fulfilled. It appears that Hilderbrand et al. (1996), in their study of extinct cave bear diet using collagen carbonand nitrogenstable isotopes, have left unanswered several key points, which precludes valid conclusions, first by misquoting previous work and second by publishing data that are not interpretable as they stand in the paper. The first point is the misquotation of the conclusions of Bocherens et al. (1994) concerning the cave bear diet. Indeed, Hilderbrand et al. (1996) leave the impression that the interpretation of isotopic-analysis results obtained by Bocherens et al. (1994) is incorrect and that the results presented in that paper, combined with their isotopic-analysis results, indicate an omnivorous diet with a significant meat component for extinct European cave bears. In Bocherens et al. (1994), one key result is that in bears, modern and fossil, isotopic values measured on dentine and bone are not at all equivalent from a palaeodietary point of view. In mammals with brachyodont teeth, dentine collagen reflects a milk diet and thus a higher trophic level than that of the adult. Thus, isotopic-analysis results from such dentine will indicate carnivory, even in species where adults are plant eaters. A crucial consequence is that only adult bone collagen can be used as reflecting adult diet. The discussion in Hilderbrand et al. (1996) mixes all values, from dentine and bone, without taking this point into account. Thus, concluding that the values published in Bocherens et al. (1994) indicate omnivory in cave bears is clearly incorrect. A second point is the fact that the approach used by Hilderbrand et al. (1996) presented several flaws in sampling and assessing the validity of the isotopic measurements, which makes the interpretation of these results highly problematical. From the “sample collection” section of that paper, it appears that Pleistocene samples come from numerous different sites whose age is not known and that are spread all over Europe. It is well known that isotopic signatures are strongly influenced by environmental factors, such as aridity, soil acidity, canopy effect, and season of growth (e.g., Heaton et al. 1986; Ambrose 1991; van der Merwe and Medina 1991; van Klinken et al. 1994; Rodiere et al. 1996). These effects lead to a very large range of isotopic values for a given species when individuals come from different places and different times (e.g., Fizet et al. 1995; Bocherens et al. 1997). An illustration of this high variability can be given by comparing the nitrogen-isotope compositions of large bovine species (Bos and Bison) in three western European upper Pleistocene sites in Belgium (Sclayn: δ15N = 4.7 ± 0.4‰; Bocherens et al. 1997), France (Marillac: δ15N = 6.7 ± 0.9‰; Fizet et al. 1995), and Italy (Paglicci: δ15N = 7.9 ± 1.4‰; Iacumin et al. 1997). It is thus clear that the data presented in Hilderbrand et al. (1996) cannot be interpreted in a palaeodietary perspective, because exact geographical and time origins are not provided in the paper. Also, the lack of individual age indication for the bear samples in Hilderbrand et al. (1996) makes it possible that high δ15N values are due to young age and suckling. Another problem with the isotopic-analysis data from Hilderbrand et al. (1996) is the total absence of information on ancient collagen integrity. It is well known that collagen is altered in ancient bones, and only when chemical purity is assessed can isotope-analysis results be considered with confidence to reflect biogenic signatures (DeNiro 1985; Ambrose 1990; Bocherens 1997). Classical ways of checking collagen purity are to use yield of extraction, %C, %N, and C/N ratio of extracted collagen, and in some cases amino acid analyses. None of these data are provided in Hilderbrand et al. (1996), which precludes any serious interpretation of the presented isotope-analysis results. Finally, so far as the isotopic-analysis data on cave bears presented in Hilderbrand et al. (1996) are concerned, valuable palaeodietary information might be obtained if (i) collagen indegeneity was assessed according to the chemical criteria mentioned above, (ii) time and geographical origins were provided for all samples, (iii) comparisons were made only among herbivores, carnivores, and bears from the same site and the same time period, and (iv) only isotopic-analysis values from adult bone collagen were considered.

Measurement of the longitudinal electron polarization in nuclear beta-decay

Measurements were made to determine the longitudinal electron polarization of theβ −-decays of Ca-45, Pm-147 and Tl-204. Theβ −-transition of Co-60 served as a reference standard and all measurements were carried out relative to it thus strongly reducing the instrumental errors. The measuring principle is based on Mott-scattering technique with a Mott-analyzer similar to that of van Klinken [1] and a Wien-filter for spin transformation from longitudinal to transverse. For each isotope several measurements were carried out at different electron energies ranging from 80–200 keV. In summary, not a single deviation from the theoretical value of -v/c was found.

Some equivalent bodies and ambiguity in magnetic and gravity interpretation

The problem of in potential field interpretation has long been recognised and arises from the fact that any observed field can be caused by an infinite variety of source distributions. This has not deterred modellers from proposing simple source distributions whose anomalies match the observed data but do not necessarily indicate the true geological picture. The underlying assumption in modelling is that a given geological unit is representable by a homogeneous body of restricted geometry. Knowledge of the geology enables us to justify such an assumption. This justification may take the form of a large number of rock property measurements and the consequent recognition that different lithologies may be distinguished by their responses. In addition, the expected structure is normally far from random and thus the may be used with some degree of confidence. Where the rock properties are highly variable to the point where individual lithologies are hot distinguishable and/or where the structure is complex then the inherent may well lead to a grossly misleading model. If the observed data do not indicate this complexity then the structure cannot be reliably determined. We propose the term observational ambiguity for the case where the data does not distinguish between one geological structure and another. In general, we should seek the simplest source distribution consistent with our knowledge of the geology and whose anomalies match the observed data. A more complex is not justified and should not be proposed. We also propose the term model ambiguity for a set of models of similar geometry, that are equally possible. The remainder of this paper is devoted to experiments to derive such equivalent models. There are a number of classic demonstrations of in the literature (e.g. Skeels 1947) but these are confined to discussions of the gravity field. The clearest examples are the concentric spheres and the set of lens-shaped discs both of which are equivalent sets to the point mass (e.g. Johnson, Jupp and van Klinken, 1977).
