Classification of spatial surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector in pseudo-Euclidean spaces of arbitrary dimension

Spatial surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector play some important roles in general relativity, theory of harmonic maps, as well as in differential geometry. Recently, spatial surfaces in four-dimensional Minkowski space time with parallel mean curvature vector were classified by Chen and Van der Veken [“Complete classification of parallel surfaces in 4-dimensional Lorentzian space forms,” Tohoku Math. J. 61, 1 (2009)]. In this article, we completely classify spatial surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector in pseudo-Euclidean spaces of arbitrary dimension. The main result states that there exist 16 families of such surfaces. As by-product, we achieve the complete classification of spatial surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector in Minkowski space times of arbitrary dimension.

Force field calculations and reassigments of Raman and IR frequencies of pyrazine- N, N′-dioxide

Force field calculations have been carried out for the planar and non-planar modes of pyrazine- N, N′-O 2 using the observed vibrational frequencies obtained from the IR and Raman spectral studies on pyrazine- N, N′-O 2-h 4 and pyrazine- N, N′-O 2-d 4 reported in the literature [D.A. Thornton, P.F.M. Verhoeven, G.M. Watkins, Herman O. Desseyn, Benjamin J. Van der Veken, Spectrochim. Acta 46A (1990) 1439]. The purpose of the present work is to determine force fields for the pyrazine- N, N′-O 2 molecule and to present vibrational assignments for the observed IR and Raman frequencies to the fundamental modes, combination bands and overtones. The planar force field determined in the present case is expected to be better than that reported earlier [S. Szöke, G. Varsanyi, E. Baitz, Acta Chim. 53 (1967) 345] because of the inclusion of the observed frequencies due to pyrazine- N, N′-O 2-d 4 isotopomer. In addition, the non-planar force field for this molecule is reported for the first time.

Conformational Stability of 3-Fluoropropene: A Challenging Problem for Both Theory and Experiment

Experiments have shown the cis conformer of 3-fluoropropene to lie lower in energy than the gauche conformer, with enthalpy differences ranging from 58 to 263 cm-1 depending upon the experimental method. Van der Veken, Herrebout, Durig, Zhao, and Durig have studied this system at the MP2 level. While their MP2/ 6-311G(d,p) results, predicting an enthalpy difference of 192 cm-1, agreed with the experimental evidence, their highest level of theory, MP2/6-311++G(d,p), gave a reversed energetic ordering, predicting the gauche conformer to be more stable by 117 cm-1. We have used much larger basis sets to resolve this discord between theory and experiment. Systematic basis set trends are observed in our results. In particular, the inclusion of diffuse functions with small basis sets significantly increases the stability of the gauche conformer relative to the cis conformer, sometimes resulting in an incorrect energetic ordering. This effect is greatly reduced with larger basis sets. Our highest level results agree qualitatively with experimental conclusions, predicting the cis conformer to lie lower by 40 and 21 cm-1 at the MP2/cc-pVQZ and MP2/aug-cc-pVQZ levels, respectively. Entropy considerations are seen to be very important.

A comparative study of the ciliary area of the maxillary sinus mucosa and computed tomographic images.

The ciliary area of the maxillary sinus mucosa and coronal sinus computed tomographic (CT) scans were studied in 36 maxillary sinuses of 28 patients with chronic sinusitis. Tissue specimens allowed ciliary surfaces to be observed under scanning electron microscopy, allowing surfaces to be expressed in terms of ciliary area (CA) as the percentage of mucosal surface occupied by cilia. The opacity produced by mucosal swelling and secretion in the maxillary sinus on CT was assessed by two methods: Min's and modified van der Veken's methods. Both techniques indicated an inverse correlation between opacity of the maxillary sinus and CA. Our findings suggest that the opacity of maxillary sinus on CT could be a significant parameter for predicting the surface conditions of ciliated maxillary mucosa prior to sinus surgery.

A New Genus Haplocoelopsis (Sapindaceae) from East and Central Africa

The distinctive tree described below, appears on present evidence to have been first collected in October 1937 by Ivan Dale, then a forester in the Coastal Province of Kenya. Further material was obtained in the Pugu Hills (Vaughan in 1940) and Newala (Gillman in 1943). The plant was determined as a new species of Haplocoelum at Amani by Greenway and was included as such by Brenan in his checklist (1949: 558). It was recognised at Kew that it was unlikely to belong to Haplocoelum since petals were present and several sheets were loaned to P. W. Leenhouts who annotated them as "prob. Cupanieae, nov. gen. aff. Eriocoelum". My work has confirmed the position of this new genus and it is described below. Of the African Sapindaceae with stipule-like lower leaflets (pseudo-stipules), Blighiopsis Van der Veken and Lepisanthes Blume can be immediately excluded since the gynoecium in both has a basal style and the fruit consists of individual mericarps. Haplocoelopsis has a terminal style and presumably a two-valved capsule. The tribe Cupanieae contains the genus Eriocoelum Hook. f. with pseudo-stipules and also Aporrhiza Radlk. with a two-locular ovary. Some members of the tribe have the sepals valvate or just imbricate in bud but others have sepals opening precociously as in the adjacent tribe Schleichereae. Pollen characters are useful in the family (Muller & Leenhouts 1976) but unfortunately adequate male flowers are apparently not yet known for Haplocoelopsis. The distribution of the sexes is very varied in the Sapindaceae and difficult to make out in many taxa but the presence of pedicel remains on a female-flowered thyrse and comparison with other members of the Cupanieae would suggest that Haplocoelopsis is monoecious and progresses from a male to a female stage within the same inflorescence.

An indirect gradient analysis of the ecological relationships between ancient and recent reiverine woodlands to the south of Bruges (Flanders, Belgium)

Riverine forests to the south of Bruges were sampled according to the principles of the Braun-Blanquet approach. Cartographic data allowed a distinction between old (pre-1775) and recent (planted after 1775) woodland. Using a chi-square criterion and/or a Fisher exact probability test, the association of species with the two historical types of woodland was tested. Corylus avellana, Lamium galeobdolon, Primula elatior, Anemone nemorosa, Deschampsia cespitosa and Thamnium alopecurum are confined to ancient woodland. Glechoma hederacea, Prunus padus, Lysimachia nummularia, Ribes rubrum and Lychnis floscuculi have a significant affinity for recent woods. R-type prineipal components analysis produced an effective ordination of species and releves. Interpretation of the scatter diagrams was performed using indicator values for the species and some environmental parameters for the releves. Two major gradients were detected: the first one is the coenocline from wet, basic clay soils towards drier, more acidic, sandy soils. Anthropogenic dynamics, through the general management which effects the micro-climate in the wood, particularly the relative light intensity, has been recognized as the second ecological parameter. The potential natural vegetation of the valleys is thus determined primarily by soil texture and soil moisture, and secondarily by former land use (and age).
