Intercomparison of leaf area index observed by destructive sampling, plant canopy analyzer and tracing radiation and architecture of canopies in paddy fields

ABSTRACT Leaf area index (LAI) is a canopy structure parameter used to characterize vegetation growth. It is increasingly important to obtain continuous and accurate ground LAI measurement data for the validation of remote-sensing products. In this study, direct destructive sampling method and indirect optical measurement including LAI-2200 plant canopy analyser (PCA) and Tracing Radiation and Architecture of Canopies (TRAC) were used for long-term continuous observation of paddy fields in southern China, to explore the variation of LAI during the growth period of paddy, and to quantitatively analyse the errors of indirect optical measurement. The results show that (1) LAI and Plant area index (PAI) increased first and then decreased in the growing period. The proportion of green leaf area gradually decreased at reproductive growth stage (less than 50%). There was a linear relationship between the proportion of green leaf area and PAI at this stage, with a good correlation (R2 = 0.73). This linear relationship can be used to convert PAI into LAI more conveniently. (2) Effective PAI (PAIe) calculated by the two methods (2000 method and Lang method) from PCA showed good consistency between each other in the growing season (the maximum value of R2 is 0.99). With the increase of zenith angle, the consistency between 2000 method and Lang method decreases (R2 = 0.83). Multiple scattering has an effect on PCA measurement, and this effect is more obvious at high zenith angle. Lang method is more sensitive to the change of zenith angle. (3) Compared to the destructive values, both 2000 method and Lang method are able to compute accurate LAI using four ring sensors (4 R), while TRAC underestimates the LAI and PAI from destructive sampling method. This study provided a new idea for reducing the impact of ground reference data errors on LAI product validation.

Multi-Scale Validation of MODIS LAI Products Based on Crop Growth Period

Leaf area index (LAI) is one of the most important canopy structure parameters utilized in process-based models of climate, hydrology, and biogeochemistry. In order to determine the reliability and applicability of satellite LAI products, it is critical to validate satellite LAI products. Due to surface heterogeneity and scale effects, it is difficult to validate the accuracy of LAI products. In order to improve the spatio-temporal accuracy of satellite LAI products, we propose a new multi-scale LAI product validation method based on a crop growth cycle. In this method, we used the PROSAIL model to derive Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) LAI data and Gaofen-1 (GF-1) for the study area. The Empirical Bayes Kriging (EBK) interpolation method was used to perform a spatial multi-scale transformation of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) LAI products, GF-1 LAI data, and ASTER LAI data. Finally, MODIS LAI satellite products were compared with field measured LAI data, GF-1 LAI data, and ASTER LAI data during the growing season of crop field. This study was conducted in the agricultural oasis area of the middle reaches of the Heihe River Basin in northwestern China and the Conghua District of Guangzhou in Guangdong Province. The results suggest that the validation accuracy of the multi-scale MODIS LAI products validated by ASTER LAI data were higher than those of the GF-1 LAI data and the reference field measured LAI data, showing a R2 of 0.758 and relative mean square error (RRMSE) of 28.73% for 15 m ASTER LAI and a R2 of 0.703 and RRMSE of 30.80% for 500 m ASTER LAI, which imply that the 15 m MODIS LAI product generated by the EBK method was more accurate than the 500 m and 8 m products. This study provides a new validation method for satellite remotely sensed products.

An Overview of Global Leaf Area Index (LAI): Methods, Products, Validation, and Applications

AbstractLeaf area index (LAI) is a critical vegetation structural variable and is essential in the feedback of vegetation to the climate system. The advancement of the global Earth Observation has enabled the development of global LAI products and boosted global Earth system modeling studies. This overview provides a comprehensive analysis of LAI field measurements and remote sensing estimation methods, the product validation methods and product uncertainties, and the application of LAI in global studies. First, the paper clarifies some definitions related to LAI and introduces methods to determine LAI from field measurements and remote sensing observations. After introducing some major global LAI products, progresses made in temporal compositing and prospects for future LAI estimation are analyzed. Subsequently, the overview discusses various LAI product validation schemes, uncertainties in global moderate resolution LAI products, and high resolution reference data. Finally, applications of LAI in global vegetation change, land surface modeling, and agricultural studies are presented. It is recommended that (1) continued efforts are taken to advance LAI estimation algorithms and provide high temporal and spatial resolution products from current and forthcoming missions; (2) further validation studies be conducted to address the inadequacy of current validation studies, especially for underrepresented regions and seasons; and (3) new research frontiers, such as machine learning algorithms, light detection and ranging technology, and unmanned aerial vehicles be pursued to broaden the production and application of LAI.

Retrieval of High Spatiotemporal Resolution Leaf Area Index with Gaussian Processes, Wireless Sensor Network, and Satellite Data Fusion

Many applications, including crop growth and yield monitoring, require accurate long-term time series of leaf area index (LAI) at high spatiotemporal resolution with a quantification of the associated uncertainties. We propose an LAI retrieval approach based on a combination of the LAINet observation system, the Consistent Adjustment of the Climatology to Actual Observations (CACAO) method, and Gaussian process regression (GPR). First, the LAINet wireless sensor network provides temporally continuous field measurements of LAI. Then, the CACAO approach generates synchronous reflectance data at high spatiotemporal resolution (30-m and 8-day) from the fusion of multitemporal MODIS and high spatial resolution Landsat satellite imagery. Finally, the GPR machine learning regression algorithm retrieves the LAI maps and their associated uncertainties. A case study in a cropland site in China showed that the accuracy of LAI retrievals is 0.36 (12.7%) in terms of root mean square error and R2 = 0.88 correlation with ground measurements as evaluated over the entire growing season. This paper demonstrates the potential of the joint use of newly developed software and hardware technologies in deriving concomitant LAI and uncertainty maps with high spatiotemporal resolution. It will contribute to precision agriculture, as well as to the retrieval and validation of LAI products.

A Cost-Constrained Sampling Strategy in Support of LAI Product Validation in Mountainous Areas

Increasing attention is being paid on leaf area index (LAI) retrieval in mountainous areas. Mountainous areas present extreme topographic variability, and are characterized by more spatial heterogeneity and inaccessibility compared with flat terrain. It is difficult to collect representative ground-truth measurements, and the validation of LAI in mountainous areas is still problematic. A cost-constrained sampling strategy (CSS) in support of LAI validation was presented in this study. To account for the influence of rugged terrain on implementation cost, a cost-objective function was incorporated to traditional conditioned Latin hypercube (CLH) sampling strategy. A case study in Hailuogou, Sichuan province, China was used to assess the efficiency of CSS. Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), land cover type, and slope were selected as auxiliary variables to present the variability of LAI in the study area. Results show that CSS can satisfactorily capture the variability across the site extent, while minimizing field efforts. One appealing feature of CSS is that the compromise between representativeness and implementation cost can be regulated according to actual surface heterogeneity and budget constraints, and this makes CSS flexible. Although the proposed method was only validated for the auxiliary variables rather than the LAI measurements, it serves as a starting point for establishing the locations of field plots and facilitates the preparation of field campaigns in mountainous areas.

Evaluating Spatial Representativeness of Station Observations for Remotely Sensed Leaf Area Index Products

Continuous leaf area index (LAI) observations from global ground stations are an important reference dataset for the validation of remotely sensed LAI products. In this study, a pragmatic approach is presented for evaluating the spatial representativeness of station-observed LAI dataset in the product pixel grid. Three evaluation indicators, including dominant vegetation type percent (DVTP), relative absolute error (RAE) and coefficient of sill (CS), were established to quantify different levels of spatial representativeness. The DVTP was used to evaluate whether the station-observed vegetation type was the dominant one in the pixel grid, and the RAE and CS were applied to quantify the point-to-area consistency for a given station observation and the spatial heterogeneity caused by the different density of vegetation within the pixel, respectively. The proposed approach was applied to 25 stations from the Chinese Ecosystem Research Network, and results show significant differences of representativeness errors at different levels. The spatial representativeness for different stations varied seasonally with different vegetation growth stages due to temporal changes in heterogeneity, but the spatial representativeness remained consistent at interannual timeframes due to the relatively stable vegetation structure and pattern between adjacent years. A large error can occur in MOD15A2 product validation when the representativeness level of station LAI observations is low. This approach can effectively distinguish various levels of spatial representativeness for the station-observed LAI dataset at the pixel grid scale, which can consequently improve the reliability of LAI product validation by selecting LAI observations with a high degree of representativeness.

An Optimal Sampling Design for Observing and Validating Long-Term Leaf Area Index with Temporal Variations in Spatial Heterogeneities

A sampling strategy to define elementary sampling units (ESUs) for an entire site at the kilometer scale is an important step in the validation process for moderate-resolution leaf area index (LAI) products. Current LAI-sampling strategies are unable to consider the vegetation seasonal changes and are better suited for single-day LAI product validation, whereas the increasingly used wireless sensor network for LAI measurement (LAINet) requires an optimal sampling strategy across both spatial and temporal scales. In this study, we developed an efficient and robust LAI Sampling strategy based on Multi-temporal Prior knowledge (SMP) for long-term, fixed-position LAI observations. The SMP approach employed multi-temporal vegetation index (VI) maps and the vegetation classification map as a priori knowledge. The SMP approach minimized the multi-temporal bias of the VI frequency histogram between the ESUs and the entire site and maximized the nearest-neighbor index to ensure that ESUs were dispersed in the geographical space. The SMP approach was compared with four sampling strategies including random sampling, systematic sampling, sampling based on the land-cover map and a sampling strategy based on vegetation index prior knowledge using the PROSAIL model-based simulation analysis in the Heihe River basin. The results indicate that the ESUs selected using the SMP method spread more evenly in both the multi-temporal feature space and geographical space over the vegetation cycle. By considering the temporal changes in heterogeneity, the average root-mean-square error (RMSE) of the LAI reference maps can be reduced from 0.12 to 0.05, and the relative error can be reduced from 6.1% to 2.2%. The SMP technique was applied to assign the LAINet ESU locations at the Huailai Remote Sensing Experimental Station in Beijing, China, from 4 July to 28 August 2013, to validate three MODIS C5 LAI products. The results suggest that the average R2, RMSE, bias and relative uncertainty for the three MODIS LAI products were 0.60, 0.33, −0.11, and 12.2%, respectively. The MCD15A2 product performed best, exhibiting a RMSE of 0.20, a bias of −0.07 and a relative uncertainty of 7.4%. Future efforts are needed to obtain more long-term validation datasets using the SMP approach on different vegetation types for validating moderate-resolution LAI products in time series.

A Sampling Strategy for Remotely Sensed LAI Product Validation Over Heterogeneous Land Surfaces

The development of efficient and systematic groundbased spatial sampling strategies is critical for the validation of medium-resolution satellite-derived leaf area index (LAI) products, particularly over heterogeneous land surfaces. In this paper, a new sampling strategy based on high-resolution vegetation index prior knowledge (SSVIP) is proposed to generate accurate LAI reference maps over heterogeneous areas. To capture the variability across a site, the SSVIP is designed to 1) stratify the nonhomogeneous area into zones with minimum within-class variance; 2) assign the number of samples to each zone using Neyman optimal allocation; and 3) determine the spatial distribution of samples with a nearest neighbor index. The efficiency of the proposed method was examined using different vegetation types and pixel heterogeneities. The results indicate that the SSVIP approach can properly divide a heterogeneous area into different vegetation cover zones. Whereas the LAI reference maps generated by SSVIP attain the target accuracy of 0.1 LAI units in cropland and broadleaf forest sites, the current sampling strategy based on vegetation type has a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.14 for the same number of samples. SSVIP was compared with the current sampling strategy at 24 VALERI sites, and the results suggested that samples selected by SSVIP were more representative in the feature space and geographical space, which further indicated the reasonable validation over heterogeneous land surfaces.

Spatial scale conversion approach for moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer leaf area index product validation

This paper proposes a new spatial scale conversion method, which validates moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) leaf area index (LAI) product when geometry information from the MODIS 1B product and classification result is combined. The in situ LAI data, Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM), and MODIS 1B product were utilized in this research. An object-oriented method was used to classify TM imaging, where each class was computed using an empirical model to achieve LAI respectively. The 30-m TM LAI image was aggregated into the MODIS 1B product based on the geometry information of MODIS 1B. The simulated MODIS 1B image was then converted into a MODIS LAI product and compared with the simulated LAI map pixel by pixel. The results showed a lower root mean square error and higher normalization of the absolute error with the new method. In addition, the field LAI was not significantly correlated with MODIS LAI, but it did show a strong correlation with TM LAI. The new method achieved a higher correlate coefficient with the MODIS product than the conventional methods. Using this validation method based on classification and image simulation can improve the accuracy of product certification.

Radiative transfer based scaling of LAI retrievals from reflectance data of different resolutions

The problem of how the scale, or spatial resolution, of reflectance data impacts retrievals of vegetation leaf area index (LAI) is addressed in this article. We define the goal of scaling as the process by which it is established that LAI values derived from coarse resolution sensor data equal the arithmetic average of values derived independently from fine resolution sensor data. The increasing probability of land cover mixtures with decreasing resolution is defined as heterogeneity, which is a key concept in scaling studies. The effect of pixel heterogeneity on spectral reflectances and LAI retrievals is investigated with 1-km Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data aggregated to different coarse spatial resolutions. It is shown that LAI retrieval errors at coarse resolution are inversely related to the proportion of the dominant land cover in such pixel. Further, large errors in LAI retrievals are incurred when forests are minority biomes in non-forest pixels compared to when forest biomes are mixed with one another, and vice versa. A physically based scaling with explicit spatial resolution-dependent radiative transfer formulation is developed. The successful application of this theory to scaling LAI retrievals from AVHRR data of different resolutions is demonstrated. These principles underlie our approach to the production and validation of LAI product from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the Multi-angle Imaging Spectroradiometer (MISR) aboard the TERRA platform.
