Resources for Teachers from the Educational Department of Fine Arts of Seville for Archaeological Sites

The province of Seville, situated in the south-western part of the Iberian Peninsula, contains a large number of archaeological sites. Some of them are of great significance: for example, the ancient Roman cities of Itálica and Munigua, the megaliths in Valencina de la Concepción, or the Roman necropolis in Carmona. These four mentioned above receive a considerable number of educational visits by students between the ages of twelve and sixteen, and a number of educational projects have been carried out there. This article outlines the types of resource material provided at these four sites.

The smelting quarter of Valencina de la Concepción (Seville, Spain): the specialised copper industry in a political centre of the Guadalquivir Valley during the Third millennium BC (2750–2500 BC)

The first specialized copper industry of the Iberian Peninsula was developed at the start of the Third millennium BC with the appearance of mining-metallurgical settlements in its main mining district (the Pyrite Belt of the south-western). Between 2750 and 2500 BC, however, and right at the centre of the Guadalquivir Valley, the great farming settlements that ranked the territory developed a new level of metallurgic intensification with the creation of the first industrial quarters. As a way of explaining this new situation, we present the results of the systematic research (microspatial analysis; radiocarbon dating; petrologic, geochemical, metallographic and isotopic study of minerals, slag and products, …) carried out in one of them, the one developed in the main and largest political centre of the Guadalquivir Valley during the first half of the Third millennium BC: Valencina de la Concepción (Seville, Spain).

Alfarería y metalurgia en el Suroeste de la Península Ibérica durante el III Milenio A.N.E.: elecciones tecnológicas en la manufactura de instrumentos cerámicos vinculados al proceso metalúrgico

En este trabajo se evalúan las primeras etapas metalúrgicas del Suroeste de la Península Ibérica desde una nueva perspectiva teórica y metodológica: los procesos tecnológicos empleados en la manufactura de instrumentos cerámicos vinculados a la metalurgia. De esta forma se pretende analizar el grado de interacción entre la actividad alfarera y la metalúrgica, y de qué manera la introducción de esta última influenció los modos de fabricar vasijas cerámicas. En este sentido, mediante el análisis arqueométrico de crisoles, toberas y vasijas de reducción documentadas en tres contextos arqueológicos del III Milenio A.N.E. (Cabezo Juré, La Junta y Valencina de la Concepción), se explora el concepto de elección tecnológica como marco teórico, focalizando el estudio de las primeras fases del proceso de fabricación de estos instrumentos cerámicos. Los resultados aportados ponen de manifiesto la existencia de diferencias significativas en los procesos tecnológicos empleados en la manufactura de las diferentes vasijas metalúrgicas, principalmente cuando las comparamos con los recipientes de carácter doméstico.
