Perceptions from emerging adults with a history of homelessness on their experiences with housing, health and other support services

Homelessness is a significant public health problem in the U.S., where nearly 3.5 million emerging adults (ages 18–25) experience homelessness while unaccompanied by a parent or guardian. Emerging adults are a particularly vulnerable group, even without the added stress of homelessness. Being unhoused can exacerbate negative outcomes in wellbeing and functioning and also increase risky behaviors. These complex needs are important to consider for programs aimed at housing emerging adults with a history of homelessness. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 30 emerging adults who have experienced homelessness, this study explores a range of perspectives on challenges and opportunities for coordination of housing and social support services for emerging adults, particularly those that are perceived to contribute to housing stability. Overall, findings suggest a mix of positive and negative experiences with various approaches to case management among both stably and unstably housed participants, highlighting the overall importance of the case manager in the housing process experience. Results also indicate that stable housing may provide a platform for greater access to and utilization of physical health care resources. Important issues to be addressed in the future include perceived discrimination in service provision. These results offer policy implications, such as expanding age-related eligibility for support systems and increasing the consistency and timeliness of case management to improve the overall experience of trying to obtain and remain in stable housing.

Provision and Utilization of Physical Resources for Effective Teaching and Learning Effectiveness in Public Universities in Rivers State

The paper explores the role of physical resources in effective teaching and learning in public universities in Rivers State. It emphasizes the importance of managing resources such as money, computers, teaching technology, and internet facilities to achieve educational goals. The study concludes that effective provision and utilization of physical resources are crucial for the success of teaching and learning in public universities. Service Function Chaining to Support Ultra-Low Latency Communication in NFV

Network function virtualization (NFV) has the potential to fundamentally transform conventional network architecture through the decoupling of software from dedicated hardware. The convergence of virtualization and cloud computing technologies has revolutionized the networking landscape, offering a wide range of advantages, including improved flexibility, manageability, and scalability. The importance of network capability in enabling ultra-low latency applications has been greatly amplified in the current era due to the increased demand for emerging services such as autonomous driving, teleoperated driving, virtual reality, and remote surgery. This paper presents a novel and efficient methodology for service function chaining (SFC) in an NFV-enabled network that aims to minimize latency and optimize the utilization of physical network resources, with a specific focus on ultra-low latency applications. In our proposed methodology, we offer flow prioritization and an adjustable priority coefficient factor (µ) to reserve a portion of physical network resources exclusively for ultra-low latency applications in order to optimize the deployment paths of these applications further. We formulate the SFC deployment problem as an integer linear programming (ILP) optimization model. Furthermore, we propose a set of heuristic algorithms that yield near-optimal solutions with minimal optimality gaps and execution times, making them practical for large-scale network topologies. Performance evaluations demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed methodology in enabling ultra-low latency applications in an NFV-enabled network. Compared to existing algorithms, our proposed methodology achieves notable enhancements in terms of the end-to-end delay (up to 22 percent), bandwidth utilization (up to 28 percent), and SFC acceptance rate (up to 13 percent).

Optimal network‐aware virtual data center embedding

SummaryRecently, the virtual data center embedding (VDCE) problem has drawn significant attention because of a growing need for efficient means of data center resource allocation. By ensuring a set of virtual data center (VDC) integration requests coming from his customers, among the main concern of an infrastructure provider is the maximization of the utilization rate of data center resources and benefits. However, existing VDCE solutions mostly focus on consolidating virtual machines in a single physical data center. Therefore, in this work, we improve the consolidated targets techniques, that consider only the virtual machines integration, by the consideration of network devices and fabrics (e.g., switches and paths/links). We consider new unreleased constraints such as multiple virtual nodes of the same request co‐location, and intermediate node requirements when a virtual link is mapped. To address the above problem, in this paper, we propose a binary linear programming‐based model, called BLP‐VDCE, to solve the VDCE problem with network‐aware consideration. This model ensures a simultaneous consolidated embedding of virtual nodes and virtual links. Extensive simulations show that solving the proposed BLP‐VDCE model can efficiently embed VDC requests with a high physical resource utilization rate.

Dynamic resource provisioning and secured file sharing using virtualization in cloud azure

Virtual machines (VMs) are preferred by the majority of organizations due to their high performance. VMs allow for reduced overhead with multiple systems running from the same console at the same time. A physical server is a bare-metal system whose hardware is controlled by the host operating system. A physical server runs on a single instance of OS and application. A virtual server or virtual machine encapsulates the underlying hardware and networking resources. With the existing physical server, it is difficult to migrate the tasks from one platform to another platform or to a datacentre. Centralized security is difficult to setup. But with Hypervisor the virtual machine can be deployed, for instance, with automation. Virtualization cost increases as well as a decrease in hardware and infrastructure space costs. We propose an efficient Azure cloud framework for the utilization of physical server resources at remote VM servers. The proposed framework is implemented in two phases first by integrating physical servers into virtual ones by creating virtual machines, and then by integrating virtual servers into cloud service providers in a cost-effective manner. We create a virtual network in the Azure datacenter using the local host physical server to set up the various virtual machines. Two virtual machine instances, VM1 and VM2, are created using Microsoft Hyper-V with the server Windows 2016 R. The desktop application is deployed and VM performance is monitored using the PowerShell script. Tableau is used to evaluate the physical server functionality of the worksheet for the deployed application.The proposed Physical to Virtual to Cloud model (P2V2C) model is being tested, and the performance result shows that P2V2C migration is more successful in dynamic provisioning than direct migration to cloud platform infrastructure. The research work was carried out in a secure way through the migration process from P2V2C.

The Whole PERSON Health Score: A Patient-Focused Tool to Measure Nonmedical Determinants of Health

Summary The development of a plan to deliver health care in America often ignores the nonmedical deficits in patients’ socioeconomic resources, well-being, and quality of life, all of which contribute to patient dissatisfaction, poor clinical outcomes, and higher health care costs and utilization. Social determinants of health have been recognized as significant contributors to health, well-being, and, ultimately, longevity, but have been largely unaddressed in primary care because clinicians lack the tools and training to incorporate them while delivering routine care. Riverside University Health System developed a novel and holistic patient-centered assessment tool named the Whole PERSON Health Score (WPHS) to address these critical needs. This article discusses the framework involved in developing, implementing, and evaluating the WPHS in a multidisciplinary, primary care, safety-net setting. The assessment tool consists of 28 questions (or elements) across six domains of health (one for each letter in the PERSON score [Physical Health, Emotional Health, Resource Utilization, Socioeconomics, Ownership, and Nutrition and Lifestyle]) that were chosen on the basis of a literature review of factors that affect lifespan, mortality, and longevity. The patient receives a letter grade ranging from A (the best) to Z (the worst) in each domain. The A–Z letter assignment is not based on a normalized calculation. Rather, letter assignment is based on anticipated impact on life expectancy. The grades are classified into three colors — red, yellow, and green — on the basis of the severity of the intervention needed. This color-coding system highlights the areas of critical need and prompts the provider to engage with the patient to act. Riverside administered 10,166 WPHS assessments from August 2020 to October 2021, out of which 9,809 were completed, representing 8,829 unique patients. In this article, analysis focuses on the 7,926 unique patients who completed a single assessment, to avoid any confusions pertaining to longitudinal analysis. Overall, the greatest need was in the Nutrition and Lifestyle domain (15.22% of the patients assessed, but 49.79% of all red-zone triggers). That domain was followed by Emotional Health (10.59% of patients, 34.64% of red-zone triggers), and Socioeconomics (9.35% of patients, 30.59% of red-zone triggers). In contrast, the least-triggered need for intervention was the Physical Health domain (1.35% of patients, 4.42% of red-zone triggers). On the basis of a provider survey, the value of the WPHS in providing care differed by discipline. The value was greatest for the Probationer Care Management team, which focuses on the needs of recently released probationers (84.61%), followed by the Behavioral Health integration team (66.67%), the Complex Care Management team (50%), and the Primary Care team (44.82%). The WPHS nudges health care teams to prioritize nontraditional upstream patient needs, including emotional health, ownership, and social determinants of health. Completing the WPHS assessment did lead to a recognition of the nonmedical needs of the patient.

The First 5G-LTE Comparative Study in Extreme Mobility

5G claims to support mobility up to 500 km/h according to the 3GPP standard. However, its field performance under high-speed scenes remains in mystery. In this paper, we conduct the first large-scale measurement campaign on a high-speed railway route operating at the maximum speed of 350 km/h, with full coverage of LTE and 5G (NSA and SA) along the track. Our study consumed 1788.8 GiB of cellular data in six months, covering the three major carriers in China and the recent standardized QUIC protocol. Based on our dataset, we reveal the key characteristics of 5G and LTE in extreme mobility in terms of throughput, RTT, loss rate, signal quality, and physical resource utilization. We further develop a taxonomy of handovers in both LTE and 5G and carry out the link-layer latency breakdown analysis. Our study pinpoints the deficiencies in the user equipment, radio access network, and core network which hinder seamless connectivity and better utilization of 5G's high bandwidth. Our findings highlight the directions of the next step in the 5G evolution.

Availability And Utilization of Physical Facilities as Correlates of Students’ Academic Performance in Electrical Installation and Maintenance Work Practice in Technical Colleges in Ekiti State

This study determined the availability and utilization of physical facilities as correlates of students’ academic performance in electrical installation and maintenance work practice in technical colleges in Ekiti State. Four research questions and three null hypotheses guided the study. Descriptive survey and correlational research designs was used for the study. Eight hundred and fifty-three (818 students and 35 teachers) of electrical installation in the six government-owned technical colleges in Ekiti State were studied without sampling. The Instruments for data collection included checklist, structured questionnaire and performance test. The reliability of the performance test was determined through split-half technique. Spearman-Brown formula was employed for reliability coefficient computation which yielded a reliability coefficient of 0.905. Percentage, mean, standard deviation and Pearson Product Moment Correlation coefficient were used to answer research questions. The t-test statistical tool was used to test the null hypotheses relating to utilization of instructional facilities while Pearson Product Moment Correlation coefficient was used to test the null hypotheses relating to physical facilities and students’ academic performance. Findings revealed that majority of physical facilities are available for electrical installation and maintenance work practice in technical colleges in technical colleges in Ekiti State. The study also revealed that there is high positive relationship of 0.61 existing between students’ utilization of physical resources and their academic performances in electrical installation and maintenance work practice in technical colleges in Ekiti State. The study concluded that the level of availability and utilization of physical facilities for electrical installation and maintenance work practice in technical colleges in technical colleges in Ekiti State is not adequate for equipping students with practical skills for self-reliance. The study recommended among others that owners of technical colleges in Ekiti State should adequately provide relevant physical facilities for effective teaching of electrical installation and maintenance workshop practices.

Parallel Scientific Power Calculations in Cloud Data Center Based On Decomposition-Coordination Directed Acyclic Graph

With the expansion scale of interconnected power systems and refined state perception, scientific power calculations become more complex and diverse. They need faster computation speed and better scalability to support power flow calculation, reactive power optimization, and static/transient stability analysis for unit scheduling. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel cloud data center task mapping algorithm of the Stoer-Wagner binary tree (SWBT) to support accelerated executions of these calculations. Firstly, based on the block bordered-diagonal form of the admittance matrix, high-time complexity scientific power calculations are transformed into a unified multi-task decomposition-coordination directed acyclic graph (DC-DAG). And then, the critical tasks in this DC-DAG are found and the virtual machines encapsulating them are matched with physical machines in the data center preferentially. Finally, on CloudSim, a cloud computing platform, the multi-job mixed experiments of 118-13659 bus power systems are carried out. In addition, real-time workload performance is enhanced in two very large real-world power systems. Studies illustrate that SWBT can improve the underlying physical machine resource utilization and reduce data interaction transmission hops to achieve better computing acceleration performance.

Impacts of mistreatment on the psychological and physical health of older adults living in sheltered homes

ObjectivesTo assess the impact of the mistreatment on psychological and physical health among older adults living in sheltered homes. MethodsThis cross-sectional study included 446 older adults living in 43 sheltered homes. The psychological effects questions screened for suicidal ideation, depression, anxiety, and sleep problems. The physical health effects questions assessed perceived physical health status and healthcare resource utilization. ResultsAll subtypes of mistreatment of older adults were associated with increased prevalence rates of anxiety symptoms, depressive symptoms, and sleep problems. Perceived poor physical health is common among older mistreated adults; it was self-reported by 74% who experienced physical mistreatment and 49% who experienced other types of mistreatment. Increased healthcare utilization was higher among older adults who experienced mistreatment. DiscussionMistreatment of older adults living in sheltered homes is associated with negative impacts on physical and psychological health, as well as increased healthcare utilization compared to those who are not mistreated.

Dynamic Virtual Network Embedding of Mobile Cloud System Based on Global Resources in Internet of Vehicles

The Internet of Vehicles (IoV) has a typical Internet of things architecture, which is the specific application of Internet of things (IoT) technology in the field of intelligent transportation. Virtual network embedding (VNE) is the effective allocation of physical network resources to the virtual network, and is a virtualization technology widely used in the data center of the IoV. The existing VNE algorithm ignores the attributes of the network itself. It only allocates resources according to the order in which the requests arrive, resulting in the problem of low utilization of physical resources. In this paper, we propose an efficient topology control scheme for mobile nodes in IoVs. We firstly present a novel hierarchy-based dynamic VNE model for IoV. Then a VNE algorithm based on hierarchical priority is established by considering the attributes of virtual network requests. Finally, a global resource capacity based dynamic VNE algorithm is designed. Compared with precious VNE algorithms, the proposed algorithm has a 19 percent to 23 percent increase in the resource utilization rate of nodes, and elevates the overall request acceptance rate and revenue overhead, and can reduce the average waiting time of virtual network requests.

Research on Resource Allocation Technology of Cluster Virtual Cloud Based on SDN

The ever-expanding demand for cloud computing needs to build a large-scale data center. How to operate the data center efficiently is an urgent problem to be solved. Statistical reuse is a prominent feature in cloud computing, and the utilization of physical resources can be improved by using virtualization technology. The core technology of network virtualization is to decouple the virtual network based on software from the underlying network based on hardware, and the proposal of Software Defined Network (SDN) provides a practical solution to solve this problem. Cloud computing puts forward the highest goal of sharing resources in the whole Internet, makes full use of computing/storage resources to the maximum extent, and is an effective method to integrate high-performance computing resources of the whole society. This chapter describes the background and significance of virtual resource allocation in cloud computing environment, studies the cluster virtual cloud resource allocation technology based on SDN, and analyzes how to realize reasonable cloud computing resource allocation to ensure network performance.

Intellectual Capital, Political Uncertainty and Firm Performance: Evidence from Pakistan

Purpose: This research has examined the impact of Intellectual Capital (IC) on performance of the firms in Pakistan while considering political uncertainty as moderating variable. Value Added Intellectual Coefficient (VAIC) model by Pulic (1998) has been used to calculate IC and its components and ROA is used to measure firm’s performance. Design/Methodology/Approach: The research used secondary data of firms, related to manufacturing sectors, listed in Karachi Stock Exchange-KSE 100 Pakistan for a ten-year period of 2010-2019. Regression Model has been employed to investigate the hypothetical relationship between IC and firm performance. Findings: Results of this paper revealed that CEE and CCE have a significant positive relationship with the financial performance of firms in Pakistan whereas SCE has negative effect on the financial performance of the firms. Furthermore, the findings suggest political instability as a significant moderating variable on the relationship among intellectual capital, its components and firms’ performance. Implications/Originality/Value: The findings suggest that the IC of Pakistani firms is driven by physical and customer capital which implies the need for efficient utilization of physical and relational resources primarily. This research is the first attempt in investigating the relative importance of intellectual capital success of any firm under political uncertainty.

Effects of Strategic Leadership on the Performance of Africa Inland Church Theological Training Institutions in Kenya

In the recent past, some organizations have either collapsed or are on the verge of collapsing after they had failed to achieve their desired results. The result has been declining financial support, poor utilization of physical resources, and a culture that does not support organizational growth and development. One of the factors that has contributed to the poor performance of these organizations has been lack of strategic leaders. The aim of this study was therefore to determine the effects of strategic leadership on the performance of Africa Inland Church theological training institutions in Kenya. Data was collected using both open and closed ended questionnaires from 219 management members, employees and third year students of A.I.C theological training institutions in Kenya. The study made use of experimental research study design while respondents were sampled using multi-stage sampling technique. The study established that strategic leadership had a positive correlation with organizational performance (R=0.242, p<.01) and contributed to 5.9 percent of the performance in Africa Inland theological training institutions in Kenya

Education enrolment rate vs employment rate: Implications for sustainable human capital development in Nigeria

PurposeThe study examines the dynamic interrelationships among the school enrolment rates and the rate of employment (via unemployment rates) in Nigeria. Design/methodology/approachThe study employed Autoregressive estimates and an unrestricted VAR approach to analyze these relationships. FindingsThe study lends credence to the new-growth theory (i.e. endogenous models) that more investments in human capital, through education especially at higher levels, will allow human capital to evolve dynamically to increase long-run growth positively in Nigeria. This tendency engenders multiplier effects in stimulating sustainable human capital development given that education-driven growth facilitates employment in the short-run. However, to sufficiently sustain human capital development to generate employment in the long-run, it appears there is need to combine education with other cooperant factors such as social safety nets, good governance, private sector development and efficient utilization of human and physical resources. Originality/valueThe growth literature has been definitive on the role of human capital in achieving long-run economic growth. Therefore, investments in education have been identified as a vital channel for building human capital and achieving long run development objectives. Thus, in the nascent quest for sustainable development, this study takes the new growth theory a step higher by examining the modulating effects of education-driven growth (i.e. via school enrolments rates) in setting the pace for employment patterns in Nigeria.

Analysis of Parameters Used for Measuring Performance of Mobile Applications

To make mobile application more reliable, performance is most important parameter. Resource management plays crucial role inside development of mobile application. Careful attention should be required for number of non-functional requirements to achieve ultimate goal of mobile application development. Mobile application and its impact on market are analyzed by performance evaluation process. For getting better performance, efficient utilization of physical resources is required. These resources provide actionable information to application developer for optimizing performance and increases efficiency during development cycle. Due to limited processing power and memory resources, keep hardware components always in running states. But slow applications drain batteries of their devices. To maximize utilization of resources, developers should consider hardware limitations too which make an effort to optimize performance and efficiency of application. This paper presents a qualitative performance analysis of mobile applications. This paper describes factors considered for analyzing performance and corrective measures to achieve better performance.

Provision and utilization of physical resources for goal attainment in public universities in Rivers state

The study investigated provision and utilization of physical resources for goal attainment in public universities in Rivers State. Three research questions were raised to guide the study and three null hypotheses were postulated and statistically tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study was anchored on the system theory and progressive utilization theory. The design of the study was a descriptive design. The population of the study was 1400 lecturers drawn from some selected departments in the three public universities in Rivers State. The sample size of the study was 420 persons making 30% of the total population. The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire titled Provision and utilization of physical resources for university goal attainment questionnaire (PUPRUGAQ). The reliability index of the instrument was established at 0.73. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while z test statistic was used to test the hypotheses of the study. The result of the study shows that physical resources are provided in public universities for goal attainment, physical resources are adequate and they are highly utilized. There is no significant different between federal and state universities in their mean ratings on the provision, adequacy, and utilization ofphysical resources for goal attainment in public universities in Rivers State. It was concluded that physical resources are important tools that can be used to facilitate teaching and learning in the university and such teaching will result to goal attainment. It recommended among others that management of the universities should provide more resources such as building, chairs, ICT facilities to support teaching and learning. The management of universities should organize periodic training on the utilization of educational resources.
