KERATIN proteins, in their natural state, are considered to be quite indigestible by animals and birds. However, there are reports that certain treatments applied to keratins, particularly fine grinding, may make them a useful source of protein in the diet.In a series of three papers, Wagner and Elvehjem (1942 Wagner and Elvehjem (1943) and Newell and Elvehjem (1947) showed that finely powdered swine hoofs were well utilized by chicks, particularly if heat was minimized during grinding. Hog hair and chicken feathers were less satisfactory.Wilder (1953) reported that processed feather meal was of value in chick starter, particularly so if it was combined with blood meal.On the other hand, Slinger et al.
