Analyzing The Use of Speech Acts in The Animated Film Entitled “Turning Red”

Pragmatics is a branch of linguistics, which is the study of language. One of the pragmatics components is speech acts. Understanding speech acts is crucial for effective communication as it helps to interpret meaning beyond the literal words and to navigate the social and pragmatic aspects of language. The dialogue between the characters in a film is similar to the dialogue in a drama or novel as they are a piece of literary works. The message of the film can be gleaned from the conversations between each character. These are the uttered words, which are made up of different speech acts. Thus, the aim of this study is to identify speech acts used in the animated film entitled “Turning Red”. The researchers used a descriptive qualitative method. The findings showed that there are five speech acts used in the “Turning Red” animated film, such as declarative, commissive, directive, representative, and expressive. The Use Of Speech Acts Types On English Speech Of The Local Tour Guides At Taro Tourism Village In Gianyar, Bali

The objectives of the present research entitled:” The Use of Speech Acts Types on English Speech of Local Tour Guides at Taro Tourism Village in Gianyar, Bali” were to identify, describe and analyze the use of speech acts types on English speech of local tour guides at Taro Tourism Village in Gianyar, Bali. The research method applied in this research was the Qualitative Approach. The populations of the present research were all the subjects of the research which consisted of the local tour guides at Taro Tourism Village, who were the respondents and the informants by the research. The total number of the populations were 30 people of whom were studied and withdrawn for the conclusion. The research sampling techniques used was non-probability sampling techniques which consisted of purposive and saturated sampling techniques. The sampling techniques used at the present research were purposive sampling which was the choosing of samples with certain purposes based on the objections of the research, and Saturated Sampling which was the choosing of samples, where all the members of the populations were chosen as the samples. This was done because the member of the populations was relative small which were around 30 people. Therefore, the total number of samples of the present research were 30 people, which were taken from the whole number of populations which were also 30 people. The instruments used for data collection were non participation observation, check list, questionnaire and structured interview question. The research findings were that all of those three speech acts types were used on the English speech of the local tour guides at Taro Tourism Village in Gianyar, Bali. Those three Speech Acts Types were locutionary acts, illocutionary acts, and perlocutionary acts.

Acts of Complaining as Realized by COVID-19 Survivors in Indonesia: A Gender Perspective

Background: 
 The increase in Covid-19 patients in Kediri City has had a significant influence on a variety of areas, including health services in the hospitals. This paper explicates an overview of how Covid-19 patients complain about health services in hospitals.
 Methodology: 
 The present study employed qualitative design using sociopragmatics approach. Data was collected from 31 informants of different genders. The data analysis used Trosborg’s theory.
 Findings: 
 The results show that in Situation 1 (Medical Ward), both female and male patients have similarities in the use of speech act of complaining using annoyance by 37% of female and 36% of male patients, while in Situation 2 (Healthcare Services), there are differences in the use of the complaining strategy across gender. Women tend to use the ill consequences strategy (29%), while men used the annoyance strategy (34%). While the pattern of similarity in the speech act of complaining used across genders shows that the hint strategy (1%) was used by both genders as seen in Situation 2.
 Conclusion: 
 To sum up, the difference in gender is not always a determining factor or benchmark in determining something including language use, it all depends on the individual's character in responding to something. Women can no longer be considered "super polite" compared to men, because in certain conditions women can be rougher than men, and vice versa.
 Originality: 
 If the complaints of Covid-19 survivors about health services in hospitals are not revealed, then the public will never know the real conditions in the field. Without intending to diminish the importance of other determining factors and reduce the performance of healthcare workers as a result of their efforts in service, the less optimal service provided by healthcare workers to patients occurs because there is an imbalance between the needs of the survivors and the capacity of healthcare workers to meet those needs.

This research focuses on speech acts as a significant role in teaching and learning process. In line with this topic, the aimed of this research attempts to find out the types of speech act mostly used by teachers’ and students’ English program. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data which were used the utterances performed by the teacher and students talk in speaking class. Those speech acts are supported by theories of Searle (1977) who find out the use of speech act. From the theory, there are 5 classifications of illocutionary speech act; representative, directive, expressive, commissive, and declarative. The findings show that the classifications of speech acts mostly used by teacher is directive and representative is mostly used by the students. From the findings, teacher’s directive has some involvement toward students’ behavior during teaching and learning process. Besides, the used of representative by students has enhances their speaking ability. This study concludes that when teacher and students used the speech acts, it helps them comprehend the message in every utterance and easy to understand when communication. Hopefully, this study will help develop good classroom communication between teachers and students.

Data was collected through content analysis оf the short memories that participants wrote. Accordingly, ten apology, six refusal and six thanking strategies were determined. While the participants generally express the acts of thanking, apologizing and refusing explicitly, they mоstly perform the act of complaining implicitly. The research findings are suggested being verified and expanded by the оther studies made on the speech acts.

THE EXPRESSIVE SPEECH ACT USED BY ANIES RASYID BASWEDAN AND RECEP TAYYIP ERDOGAN AS THE REACTION OF THE ATTACKS IN CHRISTCHURCH NEW ZEALAND

<span>This study attempts to compare between Anies Rasyid Baswedan and Recep Tayyip Erdogan in terms of speech act as their reaction of the attacks in Christchurch New Zealand particularly: a) the kinds of expressive speech act used; b) the intended meaning of expressive speech act; and c) the personality differences between them seen the use of speech act. The qualitative method was used to fulfil the three objectives of the study. The data was collected from document that was taken from the utterances used by the two public figures. It was transcribed and then analysed descriptively. The results show that the speakers used three kinds of expressive speech acts, namely: condoling, deploring, and lamenting. Condoling is an expressive speech acts were mostly used to communicate by the speakers. The intended meaning of expressive speech act used by the speakers are determined by interpreting and determining what speakers means in the context. In addition, the personality characters of Anies Rasyid Baswedan are kind, clever, and soft, whereas, the personality characters of Recep Tayyip Erdogan are courageous, influential person, and clever.</span>

Refusal Expression in L2 and its Comparison with Native Speaker: A Study Case in the Japanese Language

This study aims to fill the gap of the comparison study between Japanese learners and native Japanese speakers, focused on the semantic formula of refusal act. Sixteen Japanese native speakers and twenty-two Indonesian learners are the subjects of this study. We use a questionnaire or Discourse Completion Test (DCT) to collect the data, and we use the semantic formula by Ito and Ikeda to analyze the refusal utterances. This paper reveals that Indonesian Japanese learners tended to not aware of different social status levels and use different semantic formulas in Japanese. The lack of knowledge of the pragmatic competence within the use of speech act is the main problem in Japanese education.

Communicative and Pragmatic Effects of a Negative Forecast in Terms of Determining an Indecent Utterance

The article discusses the use of speech act of a negative forecast affecting the personal sphere of the addressee in order to insult him. The indecent semantics of an utterance that violates ethical norms and communication conventions is considered as one of the indecent forms (methods) of expression. Pragmatics presents the study of the ethical aspect of communication in the conversational postulates, the principles of politeness. However, these principles can hardly be used for linguistic examination to detect the infliction of psychological damage. The affecting negative forecast is of undoubted interest for the theory and practice of linguistic examination, since the influence of a forecasting text may cause psychological harm to the addressee in the form of humiliation of his honor and dignity. Since the negative forecast often represents a mixture of fact and predictive version it becomes an effective tool of influence. Critical publications in Omsk media are analyzed to consider the problem of detection of indecent form as a way of transference of indecent content in the speech act of a negative forecast. The author concludes that a speech act of negative forecast with taboo or ethically questionable semantics can be considered as a marker of indecent form. The emotional nature of the forecasting text makes it an effective tool for influencing the personality and its psychological sphere. This provides an added incentive for an in-depth study of these issues in the aspect of the legal assessment of verbal aggression and cases of offence in particular.

THE USE OF SPEECH ACTS IN ANGNGARU OF MAKASSAR SOCIETY

The Use of Speech Acts in Angngaru of Makassar Society.The objective of this research is to explore the use of speech acts in Angngaru. Through the framework of speech act Searle (1969), this paper focuses on exploring the types and functions of Angngaruin Makassar society. To gain data, Angngarutexts were collected and analyzedthrough the techniques of discourse analysis. To support the data analysis, some performances of Angngaru were observed. The performers of Angngaru were also interviewed. The results of the study show that Angngaruhas important roles in Makassar society. The types of speech acts were found in Angngaru such as representatives, directives, commissives, and expressives. The analysis of the types and functions in this language useremarsthe strong relationship between language and culture in a particular society.

A Study on the Use of Speech Acts: A Review of Selected Paper

This article is a review of the theory of speech act by Searle & Austin (1962). Describe what the action strategies used in the language themselves are speaking and what speech acts are used by a group of prospective teachers while apologizing, complaining, rejecting and giving thanks. Focusing on the paper written by Akdeniz University, Faculty of Education Nihat Bayat, titled ‘A study on the use of speech acts.’ This present paper uses descriptive qualitative analysis in an attempt to address the gap how to determine what type of speech act is used in the Turkish language strategy, which will provide convenience in teaching Turkish as a native and foreign language. Look at using data content analysis obtained from descriptive analysis for deeper processes. The data in this study were collected through asking participants to write the structure of the language they used in apologizing, complaining, rejecting and thanking. This present article aims to review and discuss the findings, as well as the strengths and weaknesses found in Nihat's paper. The article seems to have a clear flow on how to explain these two types of education and made the discourse easy to understand. Therefore, the replication of Nihat's research should be easy enough for similar research purposes.

A Study on the Use of Speech Acts and the Levels of Trustworthiness in Investigative Interviews

This article studies the relationship between the types of speech acts and the level of trustworthiness provided by the interviewees in the process of investigative interviewes in Situbondo police office. The types of speech acts were analyzed based on Searle’s illocutionary acts, i.e. assertives, commissives, directives, expressives, and declarations. While the level of trustworthiness was analyzed using three levels of trustworthiness, i.e. high, moderate, and low. This is a qualitative research. The data in the form of interviewees’ speech and assessment of the level of trustworthiness were collected using sampling technique method, content analysis, and interview. The results of this study indicate that the five types of speech acts can be found in the interviewee’s statements in investigation process at Situbondo resort police station. The type of assertive speech acts that serves to convey information was the most frequently used by the interviewees in answering investigator questions. This is because the questions of the investigator aims to gather information about a crime. In addition, this study also found that expressive speech acts tended to produce speech with low level of trustworthiness, while assertives tended to produce speech with moderate levels of trustworthiness.

English Speech Acts of Illocutionary Force in Class Interaction

The goal of research was to achieve a deep comprehension of English speech acts of illocutionary force. The method applied was ethnography of communication. In relation with an approach, I applied the qualitative one. In the data collection procedures, I applied the ethnography method, i.e. field observation, recording, transcription, interview, and field notes. In analyzing the data, I used the model of communication analysis, such as analysis of: communication situation, communication events, and communication acts. The findings showed that (1) the realization of speech acts of illocutionary directive had been the dominant one, (2) the realization of Grice’s maxims had been conducted “Good” as shown by the achievement index of 78. 431 %, while the hit of maxims reached the index of 21.569 %, (3) the realization of direct and indirect speech acts proved that the question intonation (Ok?, No?, Here?, Clear?, Really?), question marks (What, Who, Where, When, Which, How), question words (Are, Is, Am, Can, May, Will, Shall), and the verbal ones (Explain!, Give Comment!, Give Example!, Look at!) were used significantly, (4) the use of direct speech acts was more dominant than the indirect speech acts, (5) the hit of Grice’s maxims of cooperative principles in speaking occurred, such as hit of the maxims: quality, and manner, (6) the most significant finding was the illocutionary speech act of directive owned higher social status than the illocutionary assertive, (7) lastly, the use of speech act was highly determined by the contexts of situation and social cultures.

Speech Acts in EFL Classroom at Islamic Senior High School (MAN) 1 Sinjai

Speech act takes a significant role in the whole process of teaching and learning process by the teacher and students. In line with this topic, this study aims to observe more about the use of speech act by the teacher and students in their interactions in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classroom. This study shows that there are three kinds of speech acts performed by the teacher and students: locutionary act, illocutionary act and perlocutionary act. Those speech acts are supported by theories of J.L Austin who investigated and invented the use of speech act. The result of the study indicates some uses of speech act performed by the teacher and student which is elaborated into extract explaining more about the use of speech act in EFL classroom. Locutionary act performed by the teacher and students is used when they are conveying an expression without any specific intention within. On the other hand, illocutionary act is committed by them when they are communicating some expressions containing a certain intention to the listener. Perlocutionary act is performed by the teacher and students while they are conveying expressions and the listener will show a response and act as feedback to what the speaker says. The Effect of Language Learning Experience on the Appropriate Use of Speech Act ‘Request’

Nowadays emphasizing linguistic competence is not a sufficient path to reach a target-like communicative competence. Pragmatic competence should be put emphasis on as well. The importance of learning speech acts which is one aspect in the pragmatics is clear to those who want to learn a second or foreign language. This study after investigating the interest of language learners in the acquisition of appropriate use of second language speech acts, traces the variation over time in the use of speech act of request in Iranian EFL University students and for further clarification a group of non-language University students. The results showed no effect of time on the appropriate use of speech act “request”.

Cross-cultural Comparison of Gratitude Expressions in Persian, Chinese and American English

Granted the fact that different cultures have different speaking styles, knowledge of these styles can help people grasp the essence of social cultural knowledge to communicate with others more successfully. In this regard, the present paper aims at comparing the use of speech act of gratitude in Persian and Chinese EFL learners and English native speakers performances to identify the existing pattern among them. For this purpose, the participants were asked to complete a Discourse Completion Task (DCT) designed by Eisenstein and Bodman (1993). The results revealed that although thanking is regarded as the most favorite strategy among all three groups, there are significant differences in the ways Persian and Chinese learners of English, and also native speakers of English use the speech act of thanking.
