Follow the Pathfinders: a Case Study Approach to Production, Use, and Readership on Scalar

This born-digital article examines the multimodal academic publication Pathfinders (Moulthrop and Grigar). Through a combination of interviews with readers and the author, textual analysis of the book, and literature review of Scalar, I trace the affordances of the platform, appropriation by scholars, the media text, and readership of Pathfinders. I distill themes that are key in the multimodality of the book, including platform adoption, institutional embedding, technological context and research values. Throughout the article, which is also written on Scalar, I reflect on my own use of Scalar and the various considerations that come with it in terms of software sustainability, accessibility, and transparency of research context. I conclude with a reflection on the media specificity of Scalar as an academic platform.

Mandarin Yě and Scalarity

Abstract This paper examines the use of Mandarin yě ‘also’ in contexts which dōu can be used as well, e.g., in no matter and even contexts. I argue that there is a correlation between the possibility of using yĕ and the presence of a scalar reading as well as a reference to an extremity on the scale in question. The data we present show that yě is invariably associated with scalar readings: yě is always used in scalar contexts, and contexts that are not obviously scalar become so when yě is used. I also argue that a scalar interpretation of wh-elements in no matter contexts can be derived with the aid of negation or modals, thus accounting for the felicitousness of yě in such contexts. The paper ends with a short note on lián, hypothesizing that its function is to introduce the extreme of the scale. I also argue that the licensing condition of the additive/basic yě, i.e., the presence of alternatives in the background, also plays a role in the scalar use of yě.

Assessing Digital Humanities Tools: Use of Scalar at a Research University

As librarians increasingly support digital publication platforms, they must also understand the user experience of these tools. This case study assesses use of Scalar, a digital humanities publishing platform for media-rich projects, at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. Based on a survey, interviews, and content analysis, the study highlights the platform’s usability, its functionality, and its successes and failures in meeting user expectations. The media upload process, image annotation, and aesthetics factored into user issues. Writing pedagogy also emerged as an important consideration. Results suggest lessons for digital literacy instruction, as well as how and when Scalar might serve patrons’ publishing needs.

Some remarks on the compressed matrix representation of symmetric second-order and fourth-order tensors

The mathematical description of physical phenomena requires the use of scalars and tensors of various order. Since many of the second-order and fourth-order tensors used in continuum mechanics possess certain symmetries, a compressed vector or matrix representation, respectively, is frequently used in computational applications such as the FEM and BEM. Use of different storage schemes for different tensors lead to an hypothetical nonuniqueness of such matrix representations. The present paper offers a clarification by investigation of the structure of the underlying six-dimensional vector space. It identifies various types of matrix representations as covariant, contravariant or mixed-variant coordinates in that vector space and thus proves consistency of the matrix representation with classical tensor analysis in R 3 . Furthermore, it is shown that an ortho-normal basis for the underlying tensor representation in R 3 does not automatically lead to a normalized space for the compressed matrix representation in R 6 . Thus, distinction of covariant and contravariant coordinates is necessary even in that case. Theoretical findings are worked out in detail for symmetric second-order and fourth-order tensors in R 3 . Example applications on commonly used fourth-order tensors as well as a comparison of possible computational implementations close the paper.

Complementary Use of Scalar, Directional, and Vector Statistics with an Application to Surface Winds

Vector data are not uncommon in geography, and include examples such as transportation flows, particulate transport, and cartographic distortion. The directional and vector means and variances of these types of data are easily computed using a complex-arithmetic extension of the equations for scalar mean and variance. The January surface wind field over the contiguous United States provides an example with which to compare the information provided by scalar, directional and vector-based statistics. Spatial patterns of the mean and variance of January wind velocity (the wind vector) resemble patterns of wind speeds and directions but are not a simple superposition of the two, and one cannot necessarily infer the nature of the velocity field from separately computed salar and directional statistics. However, scalar and directional means and variances can lend insight into the features contributing to the velocity mean and variance. Scalar, directional, and vector-based analyses thus provide complementary methods with which to examine the spatial patterns of wind, or of any flow field that can be represented as a vector.

An operator approach to interactive data processing. II. Some applications of scalars and vectors

A modular software system for interactive data processing is described in part I of this series. Flexibility and portability are stressed. The system works as an interpreter and new functions may be introduced instantly. A simple graphical user interface controls performance. Arbitrary data types are supported. In the current work, the system has been implemented for numerical data (scalars and one-dimensional arrays). Some commonly used parametric and non-parametric statistical procedures (such as Students t-test, linear regression, Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon tests) illustrate the use of scalars. Arrays can indicate complex quantities, used in signal analysis. The fast Fourier transform is a basic building block. It is included into other functions such as convolution, cross-correlation and digital filter design. The benefit of such constructions is illustrated by adaptive filtering of evoked potentials.
