Several studies indicate usefulness of therapy with aspirin in patients with unstable angina and acute myocardial infarction. 1 A recent report suggests decreased mortality in patients with acute myocardial ischemia when thrombolytic therapy is combined with aspirin. 2 Results of a recent trial among US physicians showed a significant reduction in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in the aspirin group versus the placebo group. 3 However, among British male physicians, aspirin intake did not result in similar reduction in the frequency of cardiovascular events. 4 Because of the extensive reporting of the “benefits” of aspirin in the news media, it is likely that physicians are prescribing aspirin frequently to their patients, as well as taking it themselves prophylactically. This study details the results of a survey of US physicians attending a cardiovascular symposium.
