IONTOPHORESIS is the "... process wherein substances in solution are applied to the surface of the body and introduced into the tissues by the use of electrical current."¹Iontophoresis has been used to treat middle ear disorders since 1918.₂ In 1955, Rius and Martinez Visca³and Schenk⁴independently advocated the use of iontophoresis for the treatment of diseases of the inner ear. Ríus treated Meniere's disease and "vascular abnormalities" of the inner ear by transtympanic iontophoresis of tolazoline (Priscoline). In all cases,^3,5he noted relief of vertigo and tinnitus and improvement of hearing. Influence of iontophoresis on the permeability of the excised cornea.

IONTOPHORESIS of therapeutic agents capable of ionization has been shown to give high intraocular concentrations of these substances. Since the epithelium of the excised cornea not only is virtually impermeable to electrolytes 1 but also possesses a high degree of electrical resistance, 2 the undamaged cornea would seem to be unsuited to the iontophoretic transfer of ions. Any one who has used iontophoresis in the treatment of cutaneous diseases will agree with Shaffer 1 that the method is complicated, technical, tedious and time consuming. If this is so, in order to justify its use its advantage over simpler methods of treatment must be demonstrated. It will be agreed, we think, that the present status of the treatment of the resistant types of fungous infection is not satisfactory and that the number and variety of therapeutic methods in use prove that no one of them is consistently effective. Jersild and Plesner 2 have reported the treatment of 137 patients with dermatophytosis by the use of iontophoresis of copper sulfate, with complete cure in 87 per cent.
