Usage of electronic information resources by undergraduates in Western Delta University, Oghara, Delta State

This study investigated the usage of electronic information resources by undergraduates in Western Delta University. In carrying out this study, three research questions were generated. Descriptive survey design was utilized for the study. Two hundred undergraduates in 200 and 300 level who used the library during the period of the study formed the population for the study. The simple random sampling was adopted in selecting the undergraduates as they made use of the Library. The instruments used for this study was a questionnaire entitled: “Usage of Electronic Information Resources” The data obtained were analysed, using frequency and percentage. Findings revealed that undergraduates of Western Delta University make use of electronic books, followed by electronic journals and that the purpose of utilizing electronic information resources was for research and assignment purposes. slow Internet connectivity and poor power supply were some of the identified problems militating against the effective use of electronic information resources in WDU library. The study has provided information that will be useful to the library in the provision electronic resources to the undergraduates. It was recommended that the University management should ensure that there is alternative power supply in the library and Internet connectivity should be improved on increasing the size of the bandwidth.

E-Book for Promoting Buddhist Tourism in Thailand

The purposes of this research were 1) to explore a set of knowledge and develop e-book to promote Buddhist tourism in Thailand, and 2) to evaluate Thai tourists' satisfaction with the use of electronic books. The study began by exploring a set of knowledge and appropriate processes in developing e-book that would affect tourists’ travel interest. Subsequently, the satisfaction of 424 Thai tourists who were willing to test the e-book was surveyed via questionnaires in Google form. The obtained data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation). Results showed that the evaluation outcome of e-book acceptance based on TAM concept is very interesting as most of the evaluation scores are very good (4.21-5.00 because the class interval is set at 0.8) and consistent with our assumptions, that is, the content on the e-book including text and images and all information positively affects user’s interest in using it as a source of knowledge for traveling as the item “Interest in using this e-book as a source of information about tourist destinations” received the highest score ( = 4.32, S.D. = 0.48). Next is the presentation form, content structure and information layout in the item “Presentation of public relations media on the e-book has an effect on interest in Buddhist tourism.” received a very high score from volunteers (= 4.28, S.D. = 0.45). It indicates that all public relations media including images of important Buddhist landmark, architecture, messages about Buddhist culture, etc., has an positive impact on the volunteers' interest in Buddhist tourism.

Design model proposal for digital learning platform based on interactive e-books

One of the most important factors in the successful results of electronic learning environments is the strengthening of student-content interaction. In creating this interaction structure, it is of great importance that the content used is interesting by the student. The digital transformation in the traditional publishing industry allows the use of electronic books in different formats. The possibilities brought by new technologies allow students to use Interactive Electronic Books (IEB) as an educational material, independent of time and place, through smart devices. The IEB is a program that can be accessed with new digital devices such as computers, tablets, smartphones, and students can use Augmented Reality (AR), 3D animation, video files, etc. It is a technology in which it is integrated with electronic media and technologies. The use of interactive e-books as an educational material can also enable instructors to monitor student activities on these books. This study has been developed to convey the design and development processes of IEB, AR applications in IEB and a simple LMS in which IEB can be integrated, which is thought to contribute to student-content interaction. In the study, first the theoretical approach of the integrated system, then the development processes of LMS, IEB and AR applications are presented within the framework of the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) approach.

This article discusses an innovation of facilities and infrastructure to support the quality of education in Indonesia. Difficulties in the distribution and outreach of facilities and infrastructure such as textbooks to schools that are far from the center of government are also an obstacle. This causes the problem of uneven distribution of education in Indonesia. For this reason, innovation is needed so that students access the information they should get easily and affordable throughout the archipelago. The purpose of writing this article is to explain the effect of using technology media, namely electronic books or ebooks for schools. This research is a literature study. This article discusses the use of electronic books or ebooks as supporting educational facilities and infrastructure after the Covid-19 pandemic.

E-BOOKS UTILISATION AND STUDENTS' ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN UNIVERSITIES IN LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA: IMPLICATION FOR EDUCATIONAL PLANNERS

This study examined e-books utilisations and students' academic achievement in universities in Lagos State: implication for educational planners. With the use of descriptive survey research methodologies, this study was driven by three research questions and three null hypotheses. All six of Lagos State's traditional universities make up the study's population. Three institutions were chosen using a straightforward random sampling method. Additionally, 150 final-year students from each of the studied institutions were chosen using a practical selection approach, resulting in 450 respondents from the three universities chosen for the study. A well-structured questionnaire titled "E-Book Utilisation and Students' Academic Achievement in Universities" was used to gather data (IEBSAAU). The test-retest reliability approach was used to validate the instrument, and it was determined to be reliable with a reliability coefficient of 0.79. The statistical technique Chi-Square was used to gather data. The findings showed significant relationship in the use of electronic books with X2 = (4, N = 450) = 246.462, P =.000; a significant relationship between computer literacy with X2 = (4, N = 450) = 206.431 , P =.000; a significant relationship between students ‘perception on the use of electronic books for academic progress with X2 = (4, N = 450) = 262.109 , P =.000 and student academic achievement. It is recommended that: E-book library should be set up and maintained in every university of study to boost interest and enlightens students and teachers on the importance of e-books to teaching and learning.

Formation of school student’s vocabulary skills through innovative technologies

The aim of this research is to determine the attitudes of elementary school 4th graders regarding electronic books developed through innovative technologies in the development of vocabulary. Qualitative research methods were used in accordance with the purpose of the research. The data of the research were collected by the semi-structured interview form developed by the researcher. The study involved 20 elementary school 4th graders studying in Almaty, Kazakhstan in the 2019-2020 academic year. As a result of the research, it was concluded that students have a moderate tendency to read electronic books and have a tendency to prefer electronic books as much as printed books. In addition, students found electronic books to be easily accessible, easy to learn and advantageous with their ability to be easy to learn, while they found themselves disadvantaged in terms of easy concentration, eye strain and technology addiction. Based on the results of the research, it is recommended to improve electronic books through innovative technologies and to carry out studies on increasing the use of electronic books by students. E-book: development and its potentiality

This article discusses the use of electronic books (E-Book), its potentiality and the analysis made for the construction of an E-book by the Mathematics teachers in a continuede ducation, developed with the purpose of working Digital Literacy with the involved ones. A survey instrument with open and closed questions was applied in order to seek the opinion of Math teachers about the use of E-books. This initial step was used to choose tools that can be performed during teacher education. One of the developed activities during the formation, consisted of face-to-face meetings and distance learning, another activity was the didactic materials construction through Digital Technologies, leading teachers to reflect on their practice using these tools, placing them as active subjects in the proposed actions, aspect concerning Digital Literacy. From the perspective of this research, we understand that it is necessary the development of a Digital Literacy by the teacher to later help his student develop his own Digital Literacy.

Use of Electronic Books among Postgraduate Students in the Department of Information Studies at the University of Zululand, South Africa

The advancement of digital technologies has improved the information environment with more information being available and disseminated in electronic format. Electronic books have been used in the academic institutions, and academic users have recognised their potential in supporting scholarships. However, the increase in the acquisition of electronic books has brought about changes to the interface of academic institutions in the provision of electronic books to users. The aim of the study was to determine the use of electronic books among postgraduate students in the Department of Information Studies at the University of Zululand, South Africa. The study used the quantitative research method underpinned by a survey research design for the data collection. The findings show a high level of awareness of electronic books that are available at the institution and that are used by postgraduate students in learning and research. Postgraduate students access and use electronic books daily through some of the popular databases such as EBSCO Discovery Service, EBSCOhost and Emerald. However, most of the postgraduate students encountered many challenges that hinder the effective use of and access to electronic books, for example, limited access to the internet, the lack of information technology skills and the lack of training on the use of electronic books. The study recommends information and digital computer literacy training, continuous professional development, and workplace learning workshops on the access to and use of electronic books.

CREB1T: A Gamification of Double Entry Accounting System Based on Android Application

All is altered by technology. Every aspect of our lives is now, in one way or another, heavily dependent on or seamlessly improved by technology. Different technology media, channels and resources, especially in the higher education, have greatly affected the method of pedagogy in recent years. First was computer-based learning, which has replaced most of the traditional way in reading, learning and test taking. This include the use of electronic books, videos and the computer-based exams. On the other hand, gamification has been able to enhance students' understanding of learning. From the usual monotonous reading to the recollection of a enjoyable game-like experience, which gives them the feeling of pleasure instead of pressure. The students undertaking accounting classes have a great deal to learn basic accounting including debit and credit principles – a double entry accouting system method, which are one of the essentiaal and important to the skills they have in the real world, and yet they can be repetitive, boring and tearful. The CREB1T application aimed to tackle this issue by incorporating gamification approach in the lesson and deploy it on a mobile application, a platform where most millenials students are receptive with. And since it’s on mobile students may able to learn it anywhere during their spare time giving them freedom to suit their study habit.

Analysis of student response to earthquake disaster in high school physics learning

Often devastating earthquake struck West Sumatra that have implications for the sustainability of the community. People who do not know the circumstances of how earthquake will aggravate the situation, because the earthquake was a natural disaster but could not be predicted. Communities should be given the socialization and education to reduce the risk caused by the earthquake. Socialization and education about earthquake disaster can be implemented in education institution. The purpose of this study to determine the response of students to the earthquake as the study of the early development of the electronic book. The method used in the study was descriptive method with data collection instruments that is questionnaire learners. The result of questionnaire analysis of students at SMAN 4 Padang obtained information that the interest of students to learn physics, the attention of the students to learn physics, the use of electronic books in the learning process of physics, and leaning through ICT, as well as the responses of learners to disasters earthquake in learning physics is still not optimal. This can be seen from the analysis of the physics learning process questionnaire and student’s response to the earthquake disaster in physics leraning are at simply criteria. Based on the results of questionnaire analysis show that the need to develop an electronic book school physics.

ЭЛЕКТРОННЫЕ УЧЕБНЫЕ ИЗДАНИЯ ПО ИСТОРИИ РОССИИ В УСЛОВИЯХ ЦИФРОВИЗАЦИИ ПРОЦЕССА ОБУЧЕНИЯ

The article points out the importance of electronic books for digital izing education. It touches upon a brief story of appearance and development of electronic books, the experience of their implementation in schools in South Korea, Finland, the United States of America, and the Russian Federation. During COVID-19 pandemic online format of education has become universal at schools and revealed new contradictions and problems. Also, it highlights the main advantages of electronic books (multimedia possibilities, relevance, individual approach, wide use of media materials etc.) and the main disadvantages (compatibility with different operating systems, mechanical fragility, the price of a device). The Author talks about the plot, structure and level of complexity and different versions of a textbook). The article demonstrates the key phases of the creation process and distinctive features of Shatalov school’s electronic books and, their conformity to requirements of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation. The focus of this earticle is that the content of electronic books corresponds to learning how people absorb information, the laws of natural perception of information and a student’s cognitive abilities. The article justifies the idea that text in an electronic book should be brief, easy to read, should actively use bearing summaries and bearing signals. The article analyzes methods of variable repetition of educational data in an electronical textbook and self-assessment. It demonstrates its multimedia possibilities in full, widgets from iBooks Author and methods of its implementation to electronic books. The conclusion of the article demonstrates that an e-bookalong with a special software is a key element of an informational and education alenvironment. The use of electronic books is one of the ways to shape students’cognitive activities and digital hygiene. The Author arrives to the conclusion that a rational combination and complex application of printed and electronic books in school education is necessary

Big Data of Source of Statistical Information: On the Example of the Book Publishing Industry

The article’s objective is to review domestic and foreign sources related with big data, in order to determine the potentials for their practical applications at industry level, with emphasis on book publishing. The main components of big data are highlighted, which form the reference model for big data management. An all-purpose model for big data processing is constructed by use of the analyzed information sources. A brief review of Hadoop big data analysis program is carried out. Applications of big data to improve business processes are analyzed with reference to renowned international companies, Internet platforms engaged in electronic commerce, and social networks. A brief review of Ukrainian cases of successful electronic commerce is made. As regards big data applications in book publishing, reference is made to the practices of Jellybooks company. The algorithm of big data collection by use of electronic book is constructed and illustrated. It is concluded that any industry is capable to adapt the successful practices of electronic commerce leaders after leaning them. As far as book publishing is concerned, a well-organized system for on-line data collection will open up opportunities for quick production of statistical information, extension of the range of statistical data, monitoring of the current book publishing performance and prediction of its future developments.

Can Internet Anxiety Affect Electronic Journals Usage? A CrossSectional Study with Iranian Postgraduate Dental Students

Objective: To investigate internet anxiety among the dentistry students at Kerman University of Medical Sciences and its relationship with electronic journals use. Material and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, all 72 postgraduate dental assistants at Dentistry School of Kerman University of Medical Sciences were considered. Internet anxiety questionnaire included demographic questions and questions measuring online journals use and the barriers of using. The data then analyzed using independent t-test and linear regression, with significance level set at 5%. Results: The use of printed books was reported by 78.2% of the sample while the use of electronic books was 45.8%. The use of atlas was 28.9%, while the use of indexes and abstracts was 57.2. The participants used online journals mostly for research (30.8%) and education (27.7%). The most important advantages of online journals were fast access (25.1%) and easy use (19.9%). To get informed about online journals contents, they mostly used search engines and online databases (79%). The most important criterion was indexing in Web of Science (20.8%). A significant relationship between Internet anxiety and academic year was detected (p<0.05) also increase in internet use significantly increased Internet anxiety (p=0.001). We suggested increasing the knowledge and skill of dental students with online resources toward decreasing the level of their Internet anxiety. Conclusion: A reverse relationship was observed between the academic year and internet anxiety, in other words, senior students were more anxious than the junior ones. This study did not ask about computer literacy, other studies have reported a negative relationship between computer literacy, Internet literacy and internet anxiety, so it is suggested to increase the knowledge and skill of students with computer, internet and online resources.

Health Sciences Patrons Use Electronic Books More than Print Books

Journal of Hospital Librarianship, 16(1), 40-48. http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/15323269.2016.1118288&#x0D; &#x0D; Abstract&#x0D; &#x0D; Objective – To compare use of books held simultaneously in print and electronic formats.&#x0D; &#x0D; Design – Case study.&#x0D; &#x0D; Setting – A health sciences library at a public comprehensive university with a medical college in the southern United States. &#x0D; &#x0D; Subjects – Usage data for 60 books held by the library simultaneously in print and electronically. The titles were on standing order in print and considered “core” texts for clinical, instructional, or reference for health sciences faculty, students, and medical residents.&#x0D; &#x0D; Methods – Researchers collected usage data for 60 print titles from the integrated library system and compared the data to COUNTER reports for electronic versions of the same titles, for the period spanning 2010-2014.&#x0D; &#x0D; Main Results – Overall, the 60 e-book titles were used more than the print versions, with the electronic versions used a total of 370,695 times while the print versions were used 93 times during the time period being examined.&#x0D; &#x0D; Conclusion – The use of electronic books outnumbers the use of print books of the same title.

Tablet-Based eBooks for Young Children: What Does the Research Say?

Young children's use of electronic books (eBooks) is increasing as handheld touch screen devices, such as tablets, become increasingly available. Although older children's reading on tablets has been more broadly investigated, less is known about the impacts of digital reading for infant, toddlers, and preschoolers. This review compares the educational affordances of reading on tablets versus print books for young children's learning. A qualitative synthesis of research on tablet-based eReading and young children's learning from screens was conducted. When eBooks are designed well, preschool-aged children learn equally well and sometimes more than from print books. However, enhanced eBooks with sounds, animations, and games can distract children and reduce learning. When book-sharing with an adult, conversations during eBook reading are often about the platform while print book conversations are more often about the book content. For young children (0-2 yr), there is a paucity of research, but broader studies on learning from screens suggest limited educational benefits of tablet use for this age group. The authors recommend that (1) the selection of eBooks (especially enhanced eBooks) be thoughtful as games or animations that are not related to the story content can be distracting for young children, (2) adults share in the reading experience as discussions of the story, text, and characters have been found to enhance comprehension, language development, and print awareness, and (3) tablet eBook use be restricted for infants and toddlers, as they benefit more from face-to-face interaction with caregivers than from interactive screens alone.

Analysis of User Preferences for Management and Search Features in E-book Reader Libraries in Smartphone Environments

There has been a significant paradigm shift in the book industry from print to digital, with the increased use of electronic books (ebooks) on e-book readers. The major online booksellers and publishers are devoting their energies to the growth of the e-book market, resulting in an upward spiral in e-book usage, and a resultant increase in the number of downloaded e-books in an e-book reader library. However, there are comparatively few features for e-book management and search in most e-book reader libraries, particularly in smartphone environments. In addition, the user interfaces of e-book management in e-book readers are highly diverse, which has led to major usability issues. In this paper, we analyze user preferences for e-book management and search in the libraries of the five most commonly used e-readers for the Android smartphone platform via a questionnaire survey. Then, we suggest ideal alternatives in addition to user-friendly features based on user preferences for managing e-book libraries, to allow users to more easily browse collections, thereby enhancing the usability of e-book readers.

Use of Library Services Can Be Associated with a Positive Effect on First-Year Students’ GPA and Retention

A Review of:&#x0D; Soria, K. M., Fransen, J., &amp; Nackerud, S. (2014). Stacks, serials, search engines, and students’ success: First-year undergraduate students’ library use, academic achievement, and retention. The Journal of Academic Librarianship, 40(1), 84-91.http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.acalib.2013.12.002&#x0D; &#x0D; Abstract&#x0D; &#x0D; Objective – To investigate the degree of relation between first-year undergraduate students’ library use and their academic achievement (measured by cumulative GPA) and first- to second-year retention. &#x0D; &#x0D; Design – Quantitative data obtained from library systems combined with regression analyses.&#x0D; &#x0D; Setting – A large public university located in the United States of America.&#x0D; &#x0D; Subjects – The study included 5,368 non-transfer first-year students, with a total of 5,162 students retained for the final sample. &#x0D; &#x0D; Methods – Data on 10 library usage variables were collected using student logins to library databases and websites and analyzed using SPSS. These variables included logins to databases, use of electronic books and journals, chat reference questions, and workshops signed up for, among others. There were 2 separate regressions utilized to predict students’ cumulative GPA by these 10 types of library use. Two separate logistic regressions were utilized to predict first- to second-year retention by the same library usage variables.&#x0D; &#x0D; Main Results – 81.9% of first-year students used at least one library service. Overall, students who used their academic library’s services and/or resources once or more during an academic year had a higher average retention rate and GPA compared to their peers who had not used the library. It was found that four library use areas, including book loans, database logins, electronic journal logins, and library workstation logins, were positively associated with students’ GPA. Database logins and library workstation logins were positively associated with retention. Each of the models used to predict either student GPA or retention by library use were found to be statistically significant.&#x0D; &#x0D; Conclusions – The study suggests that there is a positive and significant relationship between a number of library activities and students’ GPA and retention. The effect size of these activities upon the primary outcome variables of GPA and retention is small, though this is logical considering the one-time use of a library service is unlikely to meaningfully influence one’s academic success. Other non-library factors in the student experience must be considered.

E-Learning, e-Books and Virtual Reference Service: The Nexus Between the Library and Education

The society relies on institutions of higher education to produce a literate workforce; one that is able to function in a dynamic, technological, information-overload environment. In support of this new thrust, most universities have incorporated the use of new media and ICTs in the teaching learning process resulting in a multi-modal approach (face-to-face, online and distance learning). As such, students are increasingly demanding resources and services that are not limited by time and place. Subsequently, academic libraries extend their services to meet the changing demands of the new cohort of learners. Through the use of electronic books that mirror the features and functions of the printed book and the capacity of the computer, librarians have bridged the gap between the academicians and the world of knowledge to further research and learning. Digital reference service extends the reference desk to the virtual environment to allow the reference librarian to meet the research needs of online users in real-time. These features have removed the barrier of the physical walls of the library and allow the librarian to maintain his/her role as instructors and evaluators of information and resources. This paper seeks to show how libraries have been using these two services to enhance teaching and learning. The paper further shows how students have been benefiting from them through their inclusion in the Mona Library of the University of the West Indies. Some of the learning theories that these services support will be explored along with some of the challenges.

Factors influencing college students' confidence in using electronic books as learning tools

An earlier version of this paper was presented at the 2011 IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS) at Saint Xavier University in Chicago, Illinois (and printed in the 2011 ISTAS proceedings). This paper examines factors in college student confidence in using electronic books as learning tools between 2007 and 2009. The study was done in response to the growing concern over the cost of textbooks and the increase in the use of e-textbooks to counteract that cost. This study shows that despite a lack of a gap between comfort of use of computers, students whose parents income is above the national median income are more confident in learning from electronic books than students whose parents income is not. Not only is this gap existent but it widened between 2007 and 2009 despite the growing confidence in the use of electronic books by both groups. The results of this study suggests that this gap, and its concomitant widening, could be associated with exposure to computer classes in high school and the choice of major.

STUDENT E-BOOKS CONFIDENCE AND MOBILE SYSTEM OWNERSHIP

Use of computers as an educational tool has risen significantly in higher education. A 2007 study by Educause shows that students are engaged in the use of technology for the purpose of learning. According to the study the majority of students liked learning through Internet searches, video games and simulations-all tools used in courses engaged with innovative learning. More recently mobile devices such as laptops, PDAs and cell phones have become essential tools for students, allowing them to access learning management systems and other college or university related resources in a “just-in-time” manner. But many courses still use the book as the primary learning tool. This exploratory study examines the attitudes of students owning mobile devices towards e-books as a response to the rapid increase in the use of electronic books as an alternative to traditional books at the college level. The results find that with the growth in owning and using mobile devices, student attitudes towards electronic books as a learning tool trended upwards. This information is helpful as colleges and universities continue to look towards ebooks as one method of reducing the cost of instruction.
