Easy and instant access is the first choice and priority of present generation users’ and thus e-journals and e-books are in great demand and use. As government of India through its INFLIBNET initiative and consortium means, provide access to wide array of e-journals in all disciplines but still many university libraries have not created the suitable ICT infrastructure for getting the best advantage. In social sciences users unawareness about plethora of e-resources leads to non- usage and low research output. The present research work attempts to study e-journals usage pattern by Veer Kunwar Singh University users in the social sciences discipline viz. Usage of e Journals in University of North Bengal under INFLIBNET (2012 2018) analysis with INFISTATS


 
 
 INFLIBNET under its e-Shodhsindhu consortium scheme has introduced the users of University of North Bengal with the e-Journal facility. The e-journal facility provided under INFLIBNET has brought another opportunity for university libraries to serve their users with high-quality content. This change needs to be further evaluated to identify the actual usage picture. The paper identifies the trend in the use of e-journal facilities during 2012-2018 with the help of INFISTATS (usage statistics portal for e-Resource). This has determined the period of optimal use of e-journal, which shows the popularity of e-Journals in the university. It identifies the year in which the maximum and minimum use of e-Journals is found, and J-STOR & Science Direct has the maximum use percentage (55 percent). The study also found that seven e-Journals had the highest percentage of use (91 percent) indicating the extensive use of e-journal facilities by the user community of the University of North Bengal.

The aim of the study was to look at the price of e-journals and e-books, the average cost per access and use of content in accordance with the original price of e-journals and e-books in taking the Library Material Procurement Policy specifically in subscribing to the direct science online database. The approach used in this study is descriptive. The object of this study is the statistics on the use of e-journals and e-books on ScienDirect at the Indonesian Islamic University Library (January-June 2018). To analyze the average cost per article, the average cost per use, and the use of appropriate content using e-book download statistics, e-journal search, division journal search, division journal download, Full-Text journal compilation and subscription costs. ScienceDirect. There are 5 benchmarks and analyzed using the three metric formula by Hahn and Faulkner. The results of data analysis show that subscribing to ScienceDirect greatly benefits the Indonesian Islamic University Library judging from the use of information sources in the digital format provided by ScienceDirect causing the price of articles and access costs to be far cheaper than not subscribing to ScienceDirect.

Academic scientists’ scholarly use of information resources in the digital environment

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to investigate the academic scientists’ scholarly use of information sources, the disciplinary differences in their use and the barriers encountered, particularly while using journals.Design/methodology/approachA quantitative research design based on the survey method was used to achieve the objectives of this study. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to all the academic staff of three disciplines – science, life sciences and pharmacy. Together, they constituted 24 departments of the University of the Punjab. This oldest and largest public sector university was selected as a sample.FindingsThe findings showed that e-journals, e-reports and online reference sources were frequently used. The disciplinary differences were found with regard to the use of e-journals and e-books. Users of e-journals lacked skills of advanced searching and were not able to determine the quality of e-journals. Respondents faced certain barriers in usage such as payment of e-journal articles not available through the Library, slow internet speed and lack of information literacy instructions program.Originality/valuePrevious researchers conducted studies that were focused mostly on the academic scientists’ perceptions and the extent of electronic information sources’ use. Researchers in Pakistan mostly examined students and research scholars’ use of electronic information sources and very few studies were conducted to investigate academic scientists’ scholarly information seeking behavior. This study is valuable, as it investigated the scholarly use of information sources by academic scientists and particularly disciplinary differences in their use, digital literacy skills and the barriers encountered while using e-journals.

An Investigation into the Correlation among Academic Staff’s E-journals Use, E-literacy Skills, Demographic variables and Research Productivity

The study aimed to investigate relationship of academic staff's use of e-journals with demographic and profession related variables. The quantitative survey method was used to achieve the objectives of the study. The population of the study included academic staff of 12 faculties of the University of the Punjab. Self-administered questionnaire was distributed to 841 regular and contractual academic staff members with a response rate of 54 %. The results of the study found that the respondents' frequency of e-journals use was significantly related to their discipline, age, education, internet use, e-literacy skills and research output. However, e-journals use was not significantly related to their official position and gender. It is a valuable study as it comprehensively investigated correlation of certain variables with academic staff's use of e-journals in Pakistani perspective.

Use and Awareness of E-journals by the Faculty and Research Scholars of Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology: A Study

<p>The present study aims to analyse the use and awareness of e-journals by the faculty members and research scholars of Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT). The study also intends to determine the purpose of using of e-journals, access place for searching e-journals, preferred format for accessing it and suggestions for promoting the use of e-journals. Questionnaire method was adopted to elicit data from faculty and research scholars of VSSUT. Total one hundred fifteen respondents participated in the survey from which 56 are faculty members and 59 are research scholars. The study reveals that faculty and research scholars are aware about e-journals and online database subscribed by their library. Majority of faculty and research scholars using e-journals for research purpose and Department is the most preferred location for accessing e-journals.</p>

The study surveyed the use of e-journals by academic staff of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State, Nigeria. Questionnaire was designed to gather information on the use of e-journals by the academic staff. Data gathered from the respondents were analyzed through the use of frequency table and percentage. From the analysis, it was discovered that all the academic staff use e-journals and it is used for different academic purposes. All the academic staff agrees to the use of e-journals for research purpose. It was also observed from the findings that most of the academic staff uses e-journals occasionally. The advantages derived from the use of e-journals were also revealed in the study. These include good source of information, currency and timeliness of information, ease of access, ease of storage and time saving. The study also identified some problems encountered by the academic staff while accessing e-journals. Among these problems were slow internet connectivity, frequent power outage and high cost of journal subscription. Recommendations were therefore given, this include increase of internet bandwidth, reduction in prize of articles on e-journals, payment of subscription fee for e-journals by the management of the institution and making it available to their academic staff. Use of E-journals by Post Graduate Students at Government First Grade College at Kolar, Karnataka

Journals constitute an important part of a library collection being the most important vehicle for global scholarly communication. Tremendous developments in ICT in the recent years have given amazing boost to electronic publishing. As a result the information which is being generated at intense pace from all the directions world-wide for all the themes is now being published in form of electronic journals (e-journals). Anyone with access to a computer equipped with a modem and suitable software can produce and distribute an e-journal through a computer network, thus journal publishing is being democratized. Usually, e-journals are published as electronic equivalents of their print counterparts but recently there is an increase in number of scholarly journals which are being published only electronically. As a result, e-journals have emerged as vital components of information resources of a library and play an imperative role in the distribution of prime information. E-journals have been defined in different ways by different authors.

Faculty Members and E-Journals: The Case of Private Universities in Kumasi, Ghana

ABSTRACTThe purpose of this study was to determine the level of awareness, accessibility, and use of electronic journals (E-journals) by the faculty members of Garden City University College (GCUC) and Christian Service University College (CSUC) in Kumasi, Ghana. The survey method was used with questionnaire as the data collection instrument. The study found that levels of awareness and use of E-journals were relatively high while accessibility was somewhat poor. Problems such as slow network, regular power-cuts, and unstable network were found to hinder access and use of E-journals. Therefore, adequate publicity, regular training, and provision of power generators were recommended by the study to solve the problems.

Scholarly communication in the age of Google

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to investigate the use patterns of scholarly e-journals by academics for teaching, research and keeping themselves up-to-date. The study also looks at differences in the use patterns across 12 disciplines.Design/methodology/approachA survey was conducted to explore academics’ use patterns of scholarly e-journals in 12 disciplines. The University of the Punjab was used for the sample population. Self-administered questionnaires were distributed to all regular and contractual academics of Lahore campuses of the University. After follow up, 457 questionnaires were received with a response rate of 54 per cent. Descriptive statistics and non-parametric statistics were used to analyse data.FindingsThe results showed that the academics made more frequent use of e-journals, online reference sources and discussion with colleagues for scholarly activities. E-journals were used predominantly for research-related activities rather than for teaching and instruction. Academics obtained e-journal articles primarily from open access sources, i.e. general search engines and Google Scholar as compared to subscribed and other sources of e-journal articles. Disciplinary differences were also found in academics’ use patterns of e-journals. However, academics showed just satisfactory skills regarding use of advanced searching techniques and evaluation of the quality of e-journals.Practical implicationsFindings will be helpful for information professionals to review their policies and practices in relation to e-journal services for academic community. The needs for e-literacy skills to use e-journals will also be identified and findings will be significant for information professionals in arranging information literacy instruction programmes for targeted disciplines.Originality/valueMost of e-journals use studies focused on specific disciplines – Sciences, Life Sciences, Engineering and Technology and Social Sciences. This research study is valuable that investigated use patterns of e-journals across 12 different disciplines at the University of the Punjab.

The Use of E-journals by Health Researchers: A Case Study of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR)

This study investigated the use of e-journals by health researchers in the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR). A descriptive survey method was adopted for the study and a questionnaire was used for data collection. The study population was comprised of fifty-four (54) respondents who are health researchers in the institute. The data collected were presented and analyzed using tables, frequency distribution, simple percentages, and charts. The result of the study revealed that all the respondents are aware of the availability of e-journals and attest to making use of them. The study revealed that electronic journals were mostly used for the purpose of conducting research work and the PDF format was preferred for downloading e-journals. However, it was observed that low Internet connectivity and intermittent electricity supply constitute a major obstacle to the use of e-journals. The study, therefore, recommended that the institute`s management invest more resources on network connectivity, particularly its bandwidth, and ensure reliable power supply.

USE OF ELECTRONIC JOURNALS IN ECONOMICS AND POLITICAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENTS IN DELHI UNIVERSITY: A COMPARATIVE STUDY

The main objective of present study is to compare the use of electronic journals by users in department of Economic and Political science in Delhi University . This investigation applied a standard survey method to analyse the use and utilization of e-journals. This study restricted only to the users of the Economic and political science department of Delhi University. Relevant literature on the e-journals use study has been reviewed. 150 users from both the department has been taken as sample for the study. The data was collected from the purposive sampling technique. The questionnaire was used as a tool of data collection. The data was analysed through percentage method. The main finding of the study is that the users of economics department use more E-journals in compare to Political Science department. Based on the results some suggestions have been made to the University to effective use of e-journals.

Use of E-Journals by Research Scholars in University Libraries

The main purpose of the study is to examine the use of e-journals by the research scholars in university libraries. Analysis of data collected from a stratified random sample of 888 research scholars belonging to Sri Venkateswara University, Andhra University and University of Hyderabad using a questionnaire, reveals that a high percentage of them (43.92%) use both print and e-journals. Majority of the research scholars (73.03%) use e-journals for their M.Phil/Ph.D research work. Most of them use UGC-INFONET e-journals. A high percentage of research scholars frequently use the database of JCCC. Among the open access journals, the research scholars use 'Directory of Open Access Journals' (29.3%), PubMed Central (22.07%) and Indian Journals (22.27%). The frequently used journals by more than 10% of research scholars are Journal of Analytical Chemistry (12.75%), Chemistry World (10.92%), Plant Cell Reports (10.82%), and Advances in Applied Mathematics (10.36%). Nearly one-fourth of them ((26.49%) are facing the problem of slow Internet connetivity. Majority of them (67.9%) participated in training programmes conducted by the libraries in the use of e-journals. A few suggestions have been made to enhance the use of e-journals.

Awareness and Use of E-Journals by the Students of TKM College of Engineering, Kollam, Kerala: A Case Study

This study focuses on the use of e-journals by the students of TKM College of Engineering (TKMCE), Kollam, India. The survey was conducted through a structured questionnaire circulated among 200 engineering students from different departments of the TKMCE. E-journals are the most preferred e-resource among the respondents. Google is the most widely used search engine for locating information electronically. Majority of respondents use online journals for their academic work and most of them take printout before using online journals. It was found that users faced problem when using online journals and one of the major problems faced was slow speed of Internet. They were also interested to take training to use online journals. Furthermore, it is found that e-resources can be good substitutes for conventional resources, if the access is fast, and more computer terminals are installed to provide fast access to e-resources. The paper concludes that electronic journals have become an integral part of the information needs of the engineering college students.
