(Invited) Redox Chemistry Driven by Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jet

Plasmas may be considered as mixed ionic and electronic conductors. From an electrochemical point of view, a conducting gas presents a wonderful opportunity to explore redox reactions without all the restrictions a solvent medium provides. Identifying a plasma medium suitable to allow electrochemical measurements can be technically challenging, often due to the electrical energy used to create the plasma. However, atmospheric pressure plasma jets (APPJ)1&2 have been shown to be accessible and convenient as laboratory plasma sources. They present a medium that may be considered as an electrode, due to the presence of electrons or as electrolytes, due to their electrical conduction.3 Although its definition is not too important, the presence of free electrons gives an opportunity to drive reduction processes.The interesting aspect of non-thermal plasmas, and the root of their interesting chemistry, is partly due to the imbalance of thermal kinetic energy distribution between the electron and all the other species, neutral or ionized. As a consequence plasma jets are found in routine industrial applications such as etching or cleaning of surfaces for adhesion promotion. Furthermore, there is a growing body of evidence to suggest that APPJ may be used for the treatment of solid tumors. These highly energized electrons can drive redox reactions, as well as other chemical reactions, at solid or liquid can be unexpected. Atmospheric pressure mass spectrometric imaging of bio-tissue specimen using electrospray-assisted CW laser desorption and ionization source.

When a tissue slice pretreated with gold nanoparticles is irradiated with a focused 532-nm continuous wave laser, desorption is observed to be uniform and stable, and its shape is sharp and steep. However, since the desorbed molecules are still electrically neutral particles in atmospheric pressure (AP), additional procedure of ionizing them is necessary for AP mass spectrometry (AP-MS) analysis. Therefore, the authors have combined an electrospray device with a simple chamber connected to the airflow-assisted particle transport equipment mounted at the mass spectrometer inlet. Subsequent ionization processes using an electrospray device enable the detection of several types of diacylglycerol molecules above 500 Da, which cannot be detected with the use of AP plasma jets. The authors also developed a remote AP-MS using a long and flexible sampling probe and a fiber laser with a slight modification of the proposed AP desorption and ionization method.

Numerical Investigation of Atomic Oxygen Production and Influence of Power Deposition for a Helium–Oxygen Atmospheric-Pressure Plasma

The interest in the use of atmospheric-pressure plasma jets (APPJs) is constantly growing. APPJs offer various ranges for applications, such as wound healing, cancer treatment, and dental care. The complex plasma chemistry plays an important role in each of these fields but is often poorly understood. In this paper, the production of atomic oxygen in a radio frequency helium–oxygen plasma is investigated by means of a numerical simulation. A 1-D discharge of an atmospheric-pressure plasma jet is created with the plasma module of COMSOL Multiphysics , using a set of 25 reactions. Many 1-D simulations usually cannot estimate the power deposition in a correct way because of suspected arising losses, such as radiation and inefficiencies of the external circuit. In order to match the experimental power deposition of 13 W, high voltages (855 V) are required in the model. Such high voltages cause changes in the plasma characteristics like a switch in the glow mode. The impact of the voltage on the plasma is investigated by the comparison of a low-voltage (325 V) simulation, which matches the experimental oxygen production, and a high-voltage (855 V) simulation, which matches the experimental power deposition. Outcomes of this paper further support the idea that the power deposition measured in experiments is higher than the actual power deposition coupled to the plasma.
