Usage of BIM in Smart Cities

Rapid urbanization and overpopulation in the cities create a demand for the efficient usage of resources for the cities of the near future. Correspondingly, the need for more effective urban management strategy rises up as a current issue. The understanding behind smart cities can fulfil this need for providing a strategy model for urban management. Based on the literature review, this paper researches BIM usage throughout the lifecycle of the smart city (SC) project. This article focuses on the IoT, GIS and BIM integrated SC project model. This model aims to enhance BIM model by providing real time information from built environment to IoT sensors and geographical data to GIS in BIM model. Utilization of this SC project model can be beneficial for the industry to design and construct the smart city as well as for municipality and city government entities to manage the city.

Establishing Lessons for Ireland's BIM Policy Through a Systematic Review of International BIM Programmes

BIM usage is accelerating rapidly across the globe, driven by the major private and government owners who want to embrace the benefits of faster, more certain project outcomes. The support of central government for BIM implementation can be regarded as the key driving force leading to higher utilisation of BIM. To further understand how international governments have supported their BIM programmes, the BIM Innovation Capability Programme (BICP) research team in Ireland completed a comprehensive Global BIM Study in 2017. An explicit ingredient of this article involved conducting a comprehensive literature review of global BIM adoption initiatives, with a particular focus on successful enablers in international regions. This helped inform the publication of the Digital Transition Roadmap published by the National BIM Council (NBC) of Ireland in late 2017. This article details the findings of an examination of BIM progress in eight countries of particular interest to the NBC given their relative advancement in their BIM journey. Whilst the results showed a variation of approach, evidence suggests that this was best achieved through the establishment of a central resource funded by government to drive digital transition. This article is particularly timely as Ireland releases its own Digital Construction Transition Roadmap 2018-2021. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how Ireland's Roadmap reflects best international practice and why international knowledge sharing and collaboration will be an ongoing priority for Ireland's transition programme.

Prioritizing BIM Capabilities of an Organization: An Interpretive Structural Modeling Analysis

The Indian Architectural Engineering and Construction sector is grappling with the adoption of BIM as is evident from a relatively low level of adoption. While there have been sufficient number of successful (and unsuccessful) project level implementations of BIM in India, the maturity level of the overall industry and its constituents remains relatively low. One of the challenges faced, especially at the organizational level, is an understanding and development of the organization's BIM capabilities. These capabilities need attention in terms of their effectiveness and hierarchy of implementation in order to overcome the challenges of adoption and increasing maturity levels in BIM usage. The inability to identify crucial BIM capabilities is one of the primary barriers to ineffective BIM implementation and slow adoption in India. The aim of this study is to investigate the dynamics of different BIM capabilities and to understand how these capabilities can be represented as a set of interrelated elements by adopting Interpretive Structure Modeling (ISM) technique Accordingly, a clear understanding regarding the nature of each BIM capability is developed that will help the organizations to plan the strategic implementation of BIM on any project and gain systematic, logical and productive results. Through the three-phased study, it was concluded that BIM capabilities namely visualization, energy and environment analysis, structural analysis, MEP system modelling, constructability analysis, and BIM for as-built were found to be the independent BIM capabilities having strong driving power but weak dependence power. Facilities management is a dependent BIM capability with weak driving power but strong dependence power. This study provides a roadmap to BIM implementers by highlighting the driving and dependence power of each BIM capability which is deemed useful for enhanced delivery of construction projects. Significant theoretical and practical implications are envisioned for both researchers and project managers through the findings of this study.

The use of a BIM-based framework to support safe facility management processes

Abstract Maintenance personnel in the field of facility management (FM) are at constant risk of electrical shock, falls, crushing, cuts and bruises, and as a result, have a much higher rate of injury and illness than the national average. Case study analysis confirms that many recorded accidents could have been avoided had the victim followed appropriate hazard mitigation steps to safely execute a FM task. Currently, safety information is conveyed through training seminars, documents, and meetings. This information, although comprehensive, often remains fragmented among multiple resources. Research has shown that the more time and effort an individual must spend obtaining information, the less likely they are to retrieve the information and obey the stated warnings, directly relating to injuries and fatalities. This research attempts to mitigate these issues by describing current market trends, available technologies, and limitations. The paper presents a BIM-based framework to support safe maintenance and repair practices during the facility management phase, through safety attribute identification/classification, data processing and rule-based decision making, and a user interface. By developing a BIM-based framework for FM safety, an underutilized/under-researched usage of BIM is being explored.

클라우드 컴퓨팅 기술을 활용한 데스크탑 가상화 기반의 BIM 설계 환경 구축에 관한 연구

BIM 기술은 현재 빠르게 건설 산업 전반에 적용 및 확산되고 있다. 그러나 고비용의 BIM 인프라, 법령의 부재, 운영 프로세스 등의 문제로 도입 초기의 기대와 달리 그 활용도면에서 만족할 만한 기대치를 채우지 못하고 있다. 설계 단계에서 수행되는 BIM 기술 기반의 협업 설계 인프라 구축은 성공적인 건설 프로젝트를 위한 필수 요소로 볼 수 있다. 현재 BIM은 클라우드 컴퓨팅기술과 결합하여 드로잉, 3D 모델링, 객체 데이터, 속성 정보 등을 생성할 수 있는 서비스 들이 파생되고 있으며 설계 인프라를 위한 핵심으로 떠오르고 있다. 본 논문은 VDI 시스템 환경 설정 및 구축을 통해 BIM 모델링, Viewing, 모델 체크, 마크업 등 BIM을 수행할 수 있는 서버 인프라 서비스 구축 방안을 제시한다. VDI 성능 시스템 테스트를 통하여 BIM 설계 환경에 필요한 가상 머신 리소스를 산정하고 배분하는 방식을 제안하여 클라우드 컴퓨팅 기반 BIM 설계 및 BIM 설계정보를 활용 프로젝트 운영 방향을 제시하고자 한다. 【Recently BIM technology has been expanded for using in construction project. Due to the high-cost of BIM infrastructure development, lack of regulations, lack of process and so forth, usage of BIM has been delayed than initial expectations. In design phase, especially, collaboration based on BIM system has been a key factor for successful next generation building project. Through the analysis of current research trends about IT technologies, virtualization and BIM service, data exchange such as drawings, 3D model, object data, properties using cloud computing and virtual server system is defined as a most successful solution. The purpose of this study is to enable the cloud computing BIM server to provide several main functions such as editing models, 3D model viewing and checking, mark-up and snapshot in high-performance quality by proper design of VDI system. Concurrent client connection performance is a main technical index of VDI. Through testing of test-bed server client, developed VDI system's multi-connect control is evaluated. Performance-test result of BIM server VDI effect to development direction of cloud computing BIM service for commercialization.】

시공단계에서의 BIM 활용성 증대를 위한 품질관리 방안

Since it is common that design BIM data created by designers and engineers do not afford to consider constructability for the site, it is usually necessary to optimize the design BIM data to construction BIM data. While this optimization process requires various design updates depending on the construction methods and requirements, most designers in the projects do not participate the construction phase, which can arise another obstacle factor in utilizing construction BIM. In order to prevent this issue, we need cooperation system, where all the parties work together from the initial stage of project to create quality assured BIM model. However this kind of system is not realistic in Korea with most of the working processes being conventional yet. Therefore, at this point of time, it is realistic for us to secure basic construction qualities in the design phase and keep those qualities by the construction phase. This study suggested a relevant quality management plan for BIM usage in construction phase.

Strategies and Frameworks for Adopting Building Information Modelling (BIM) for Quantity Surveyors

This paper looks at current BIM adoption overseas vis-à-vis the Malaysian BIM scenario. Issues in BIM usage to be addressed by the industry are discussed. The benefits of adopting BIM for Quantity Surveyors (QS) are numerous and the strategies to pave the way for its adoption are made known. The broad frameworks for reviewing the foreign BIM codes and standards; assessment of priority research areas and their impact; re-engineering systems and processes in the project chain for BIM are explained. The caveats for implementation are visited to provide a balanced view of IT initiatives. New roles for the QS as cost modellers or value modellers from project inception are envisaged.

Understanding adoption and use of BIM as the creation of actor networks

There has been a considerable time lag between the emergence of visionary expectations of BIM's (Building Information Models) transformative potential in the architecture, engineering and construction industry, and the deployment of the technology in the industry's daily practice. By viewing adoption and use of BIM as the inter-linkage of actors forming a building and construction project, the aim of the paper is to uncover mechanisms facilitating and constraining the creation of actor networks in which BIM is adopted and used. The aim is pursued by a case study in a major Swedish construction company. It is concluded that the possibility of incremental implementation of BIM applications is well aligned with the character of the industrial context. But the context can also constrain the use of applications requiring more long term thinking. However, because of the disruptive nature of building and construction projects, the challenge is to maintain and re-establish the network in which BIM is used in consecutive projects. When clients and regulating bodies recognize benefits from BIM usage, the main obstacle created by these characteristics of the industry will diminish.
