Regional Rivals, Pacific Partners

This article examines how urban rivalries in Japan’s capital region shaped public debates in 1930s Yokohama over its place in the Pacific and the wider world. Faced with a collapsing international system, Yokohama’s city leaders contended with neighboring co-nationals Tokyo and Kawasaki as both threats to and potential partners in their city’s future as an industrial and commercial hub at the vanguard of a coming “Age of the Pacific.” While invocations of “the nation” and Japan’s emergent role in the Pacific often colored these debates, local boosters advocated less for the “national weal” and more for what they saw as Yokohama’s “rightful” role at the forefront of Japan’s international trade and transport.

SCOPE OF PROMOTING INNOVATIONS IN RURAL ENTREPRENEURS AND ARTISANS IN WEST GODAVARI DISTRICT,ANDHRA PRADESH

Rural Entrepreneurship development set as A challenge in this scenario of globalization. 68.84 % of people live in rural areas of India, according to the 2011 Census. People in rural areas are suffering from unemployment and inadequate infrastructure facilities that can be addressed through rural entrepreneurs' growth. "Rural entrepreneurship can be defined as village-level entrepreneurship such as farming, business and acts as a powerful economic development factor." But these rural entrepreneurs are suffering from a number of problems, such as fear of risk, lack of capital, illiteracy and urban entrepreneurial rivalry. By providing job opportunities to citizens in cities, rural entrepreneurs raise the quality of life and buying power of people. In the sense of rural growth in India, this paper is an effort to explain the problems and challenges of rural entrepreneurship, artisans and potential suggestions to address the problems.

Forgotten Velvet: Understanding Eastern Slovakia's 1989

By focussing on the experience of Eastern Slovakia during Czechoslovakia's 1989 Velvet Revolution, this article examines the motivations propelling local revolutionaries who opposed the Communist regime at great risk to themselves and their families. It asks what inspired those who countered the government 30 years ago and argues that, for many, ideological factors were the primary driver, rather than economic considerations. Exploring these questions through the lens of Košice provides a counterpoint to accounts of the Velvet Revolution in Prague and Bratislava, which have come to dominate understandings of Czechoslovakia in 1989 and which obscure the particularities of the revolution in other significant places across the country. The text draws on regional archival and period newspaper accounts which foreground the voices of students, steel workers, dramatists, minorities and local Communist Party leaders. These sources indicate the active but uncertain nature of civil society in those crucial November and December days. The article also underscores the urban rivalry between Bratislava and Košice, which manifested itself when Košice sided with Prague's protest organization over Bratislava's. The 30th anniversary of the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe provides a timely platform for a glimpse into the largely untold story of Eastern Slovakia's Velvet Revolution.

Procession, pride and politics in the Medicea hospes (1638): a Dutch festival book for a French Queen

In 1638, Caspar Barlaeus penned the Medicea hospes, a description of Amsterdam’s festive reception of French Queen Marie de Médicis in September of that year. The first of its kind in the Dutch Republic, the sumptuously illustrated volume featured seventeen etchings, including seven views of the celebrations that took place within the city. This essay examines the illustrations in the Medicea hospes with respect to Barlaeus’s prose. I suggest that the images depart from the pictorial conventions of European ceremonial books and instead engage native artistic and literary traditions to evoke peace and prosperity in a Dutch idiom. I situate the visual and textual aggrandisement of Amsterdam within the context of urban rivalries and the political framework of the 1630s, a time when the vroedschap attempted to influence foreign policy in favor of a truce with Spain, and assert the city’s economic and cultural preeminence at home and abroad. The Medicea hospes, I argue, affirmed a positive image of Amsterdam and served as a political vehicle for the vroedschap’s peace efforts.

Cities of Commerce: an Introduction to the Articles

The Princeton Economic History of the Western World seems to have a patent on important, agenda-setting monographs. Oscar Gelderblom’s Cities of Commerce: The Institutional Foundations of International Trade in the Low Countries, 1250-1650 surely fits this description and earns its inclusion in this important series. Cities of Commerce argues that institutional change was fuelled by urban rivalry; cities competed which each other and as a result adapted commercial, legal and financial institutions to suit the needs of merchants. The book draws on the experiences of three successive commercial success stories: Bruges, Antwerp and Amsterdam from the fourteenth until the seventeenth centuries. These cities managed to attract large groups of foreign and native merchants through the creation of open-access institutions allowing all merchants to trade in these cities. The book is noteworthy in four aspects. Firstly, it synthesizes two social science traditions dealing with the history of long-distance trade prior to the Industrial Revolution: New Institutional Economics and economic history. Scholars in the New Institutional Economics tradition following Douglass North and Avner Greif have singled out those institutions that are thought to have mattered for the spectacular development of trade since the medieval Commercial Revolution, isolated them and verified both their theoretical and practical benefits and constraints. They have done so primarily by means of modelling and game theory in order to identify the key features of these institutions. Economic historians, on the other hand, have pointed out the plethora of institutions that merchants in the past have used. Historians have produced detailed, qualitative descriptions of how and when merchants used particular institutions. Gelderblom combines the strengths of both traditions: analytical precision and historical contextualization.

The synthesis of town and trade: visualizing provincial urban identity, 1800–1858

ABSTRACT:The early nineteenth-century manufacturing town was a diverse and transient environment that inspired a varied canon of printed imagery. Alongside folio engravings and souvenir prints, one of the most prevalent genres of urban imagery was the commercial advertisement. This article demonstrates the value of early pictorial advertisements in accessing contemporary attitudes to urban manufacturing and to provincial urbanization in general. It argues that in a climate of urban rivalry, artists and publishers inherited and invented new visual formulae with which to promote manufactories and commercial premises to tradesmen, consumers and tourists. It concludes that the resulting imagery throws into question the prevalent historical caricature of the early nineteenth-century manufacturing town as a place of deprivation, disorder and decay.

Retail Productivity

Recent attention has focused on the UK's productivity gap in the retail sector. Reynolds et al. (2005) emphasises that a more thorough understanding of what drives productivity in the retail sector requires a better understanding of the ‘complex mix of urban characteristics, consumer preferences and competitive rivalries’. This paper discusses some of the main issues involved in the measurement of productivity in retail, and how these problems are being tackled in new work using microdata on the UK supermarket industry.

Kinship, Identity, and Religion in Sixteenth-Century Toulouse: The Case of Simon Lecomte

This article explores the problems of identity, membership in the community, and religious violence which converge in one case study of Simon Lecomte, a merchant of Lyonnais origins, and a bourgeois of Paris, whose residence in Toulouse extended from the turbulent 1560s through the Catholic League's rise to power in the late 1580s. Arrested for heresy in 1586, Lecomte was a man of amphibious identity, neither wholly inside nor outside the community of Toulouse. By examining the course of Lecomte's trial from 1586 to 1589, this article also seeks to further our understanding of the roots of religious conflict in early modern France. Who became a victim of religious persecution and why? What role did long-standing grievances, personal and familial, urban rivalries, and economic competition play in shaping the ferocity and direction of religious persecution?

Planning and Urban Rivalry in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1930s

Urban scholars have posited a shift in city planning from the city-beautiful ideals of the 1890s to the city-functional goals of the 1920s. In San Francisco, elite fears that the Bay Bridge would lead to the exodus of residents and businesses to Oakland and the East Bay spurred new planning proposals in the 1930s. However, conventional planning efforts that focused on improving transit efficiency failed to generate much public support. Instead, merchants and other elites demanded that planning be used to create a cityscape of fantasies that would distinguish San Francisco from its rivals. The planning of new fairs and festivals re-created the city’s history and drew public support for other planning efforts aimed at attracting tourists. As a result, the creation of fantasies became a mainstay of planning in San Francisco and throughout the nation.
