Evaluation of Land Suitability for Agroforestry Development Based on Liberika Coffee in Kedabu Rapat Village, Meranti Islands Regency

Land evaluation is the process of comparing a series of data on land, vegetation and climate with specific use requirements. The goal to be achieved is to determine land use options as a bridge between physical, biological and technological components with economic goals to be achieved in a particular form of land use. Agroforestry is an integrated land use system, which has social and ecological aspects, implemented by combining trees with agricultural crops and / or livestock (animals), either jointly or in rotation. This study aims to identify land characteristics, evaluate the level of land suitability and how to develop a combination pattern of agroforestry plants based on Liberika Coffee that is right for the sake of improving the economy of the community in Kedabu Rapat Village. The method used is survey method and soil sampling by transect line at 1 kilometer intervals proportionally. The data analysis performed was scoring and matching between land characteristics and quality data with plant growth requirements using ArcGIS 10.2 software. The results showed that the annual average rainfall was 1,200-2,400 mm / year, temperatures were between 25 ° C - 32 ° C, flat topography with a classification of slope (<3%), soil types were Organosols and Gleihumus, flood hazard from none to moderate and the danger level of landslides and erosion is very light or not prone. The land suitability level for agroforestry based on Liberika Coffee with shade in the form of Coconut, Areca nut and Geronggang plants is very suitable (S1) covering an area of ​​± 848.64 ha (34.78%), the appropriate category (S2) covering an area of ​​± 584.54 ha (23, 96%), the category according to marginal (S3) is ± 521.78 ha (21.38%), and the unsuitable category (N) is ± 380.42 ha (15.59%) while the settlement area is ± 104.61 ha (4.29%). The combination pattern of agroforestry plants based on Liberika Coffee with shade plants of Coconut, Pinang and Geronggang in Kedabu Rapat Village is combination pattern 1 (border tree planting / trees along border) and combination pattern 2 (alley cropping) where Liberika Coffee plants are 2.5 x spacing. 2.5 m, Coconut spacing 10 x 10 m, Pinang spacing 2.5 x 2.5 m and Geronggang spacing 5 x 5 m.

Geochemical evaluation of groundwater and suitability of groundwater quality for irrigation purpose in an agricultural region of South India

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the geochemical processes controlling the groundwater chemistry and also to assess the groundwater quality suitability criteria for irrigation purposes. An agricultural region of Telangana, South India, was selected for the present study. A total of 100 groundwater samples were collected and estimated for pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), bicarbonate ({text{HCO}}_{3}^{ - }), chloride (Cl−), sulfate ({text{SO}}_{4}^{2 - }), nitrate ({text{NO}}_{3}^{ - }), and fluoride (F−). The groundwater was characterized by mostly alkaline conditions with a dominance of Na+ and {text{HCO}}_{3}^{ - } ions, indicating the prevailing conditions of weathering and dissolution of silicate minerals. The various geochemical signatures such as Na+ vs Cl−, Ca2+ + Mg2+ vs {text{HCO}}_{3}^{ - }, Ca2+ + Mg2+ vs {text{HCO}}_{3}^{ - } + {text{SO}}_{4}^{2 - }, {text{HCO}}_{3}^{ - } vs Cl− + {text{SO}}_{4}^{2 - }, Ca2+ + Mg2+ vs total cations, and Ca2+ + Mg2+ vs Na+ + K+ and the saturation indices with respect to calcite, halite, and gypsum suggest obviously the dominant conditions of carbonate weathering associated with the reverse ion exchange and evaporation processes as the geogenic factors. The linear trend of TDS vs {text{NO}}_{3}^{ - } + Cl−/{text{HCO}}_{3}^{ - } clearly specifies the influence of non-geogenic sources on the aquifer system. These are the important contributors to the variation in the groundwater chemistry. However, the impact of the geogenic source is masking the influence of the anthropogenic source in some areas of the present study region. According to the salinity vs sodium adsorption ratio, residual sodium carbonate, magnesium ratio, and Kelly ratio, 99.9%, 7.06%, 63.07%, and 51.27% of the total study region come under the unsuitable categories for irrigation purposes, respectively. Therefore, the findings of this study recommended some site-specific appropriate management strategies for the safe supply of groundwater for proper crop growth and consequently for sustainable development of the rural environment.

Water quality and probabilistic non-carcinogenic health risk of groundwater: a half decadal scenario change in Vadodara.

Groundwater is essential to secure the safety of water supply in Vadodara, Gujarat. In this study, groundwater samples were collected from various part of the city which separated in 12 wards. The present study contains analyses of 720 groundwater samples gathered from various tube and open wells and analyzed for fluoride and other physicochemical parameters during 2014 and 2019. The results indicated that fluoride and TDS were high and the overall water quality was poor in the study area. Gastrointestinal and other health-related issues increased due to higher TDS in east, north and northeast regions. Likewise, hierarchical cluster analysis also indicated that TDS and chloride-rich water. Fluoride concentration was observed in the range of 0.66-1.61mg/l (2014) and 0.86-1.77mg/l (2019) which indicates that 62% samples are unfit for drinking purpose, which could cause dental and skeletal fluorosis. The water quality index (WQI) indicated lack of excellent water in the studied area in the last half-decade. As per WQI calculation suggest that 82.12% (2014) and 69.00% (2019) of groundwater samples represent poor, very poor and unsuitable categories, whereas remaining 17.85% (2014) and 31.00% (2019) of the samples represent good category for drinking purposes in entire Vadodara, Gujarat. Marginal improvement in the groundwater quality is reported due to good rainfall in 2019. Health risks associated with high fluoride drinking water were assessed for various age groups of inhabitants such as children, infants and adults. The non-carcinogenic hazard quotient estimated by oral intake was 1.38-3.36 (2014) and 1.79-3.70 (2019) for infants; 0.69-1.68 (2014) and 0.90-1.85 (2019) for children, whereas 0.07-0.18 (2014) and 0.10-0.20 (2019) for adults. Therefore, infant and children are relatively at higher health risk due to the intake of fluoride-rich drinking water than adult in the studied region. Both indices were indicated contaminated water or closer to contamination which induced non-carcinogenic health risk on citizens. Thus, the comprehensive results of present study can be used as a baseline data and valuable tool for government authorities for long-term monitoring, health monitoring and sustainable development of Vadodara, Gujarat.

Application of multi-hydrochemical indices for spatial groundwater quality assessment: Ziway Lake Basin of the Ethiopian Rift Valley

The Ethiopian Rift Valley (ERV) is characterized by arid and semi-arid climate with groundwater as the most important water resource used for drinking and irrigation purposes. However, in the region, people are suffering from severe water scarcity exacerbated by climate effect. Besides water availability, endemic water quality issues are critical and affect the suitability of the water and human health risks. The present study evaluates the suitability of groundwater for drinking and agricultural purposes in the Ziway Lake Basin (ZLB) of the ERV. Groundwater used for drinking contains multiple inorganic contaminants in levels that surpass the World Health Organization recommended limits. The most frequent of these violations were for Na+, K+, HCO3−, F− and few samples for Mn, As, U, Pb and Mo. The modeled Drinking Water Quality Index (DWQI) values of the groundwater show wide variation ranging from 12.7 (Excellent category) to 714 (Unsuitable category) with mean value of 94. Likewise, Irrigation Water Quality Index (IWQI) computed by considering EC, SAR, Na%, RSC and PI of the groundwater varies from 13.2 to 520 with a mean value of 106. Both DWQI and IWQI values suggest that groundwater is generally of Excellent quality for drinking and irrigation use in the headwater regions of the ZLB and progressively becomes extremely Unsuitable toward the rift floor. The exceptionally high DWQI values to the west of Lake Ziway is mainly associated with the co-occurrence of multiple toxic elements from a groundwater from the Quaternary sediments and rhyolitic volcanic aquifers.

The disaster that hit Palu City recently caused changes in the quality of water consumed by the community. To find out whether it is feasible or not, a method is needed to detect a water quality system that is easy to apply at an economical price so that people can know for sure the quality of the water they use for their daily needs. Therefore, a tool is designed to determine the quality of water, which samples are taken around the coast of Tondo by using the Fuzzy Logic method. This design was built using the Arduino module by combining four sensors, namely a pH sensor, a TDS sensor, a Turbidity sensor, and a temperature sensor. Water quality in this study was divided into three groups, namely drinking water (UM), water for washing (UC), and water not suitable for use (TL). While the water quality benchmarks are known from the incorporation of existing sensor readings, so that the value of water quality measured in the study is in the unsuitable category with a fuzzy value of 100 in sample 1, and to use washing with a fuzzy value of 45.68 in sample 2, and 26.4 in sample 3.

Suitability and development strategy for Turtle Ecotourism in Kapoposang Islands Marine Tourism Park, South Sulawesi, Indonesia

Turtles are a tourist attraction that can be developed using an ecotourism approach. This approach is expected to provide economic benefits without neglecting the conservation aspects of protected marine life, including turtles in the Kapoposang Islands Marine Tourism Park (TWP), Pangkep Regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. This study aimed to assess the suitability of turtle ecotourism and determine a strategy for developing turtle ecotourism in Kapoposang Island. This research was conducted in February and March 2020. The data collected during this study were divided into 3 groups of data with the aspects studied including; biophysics (beach slope, coastal vegetation, beach width, light intensity, distance from settlement and tides), biological (secondary data), and social community. The analysis performed were a tourism suitability index analysis, SWOT analysis, and descriptive analysis. The results indicate that the suitability of four stations in the Kapoposang Island for turtle nesting tourism ranges from “appropriate” to “unsuitable” categories. The suitability analysis results for station I (57.58%), station II (57.58%), and station IV (63.64%) were in the appropriate category while Station III (46.97%) was in the unsuitable category. The incubation process of newly hatched eggs and hatchlings carried out by the “Bahari Lestari” community group was no longer operating. The recommended development strategy directions based on the SWOT analysis are: (1) capacity building training and assistance to organize community groups in an integrated manner, (2) repairs, maintenance, and additional supporting facilities for tourism with a scenario to guide organized turtle tourism activities, (3) conduct study tours to areas that are considered successful in optimizing the potential of ecotourism.

DIRECTIONS FOR UTILIZATION OF SETTLEMENT LAND IN LANDSLIDE HAZARD AREAS (CASE STUDY: IN THE NORTHERN REGION OF BANJARNEGARA REGENCY)

This research was conducted in the northern area of Banjarnegara Regency, based on the distribution map of potential landslide susceptibility issued by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, the northern region of Banjarnegara Regency has a very high potential for landslides including Pandanarum, Kalibening, Karangkobar, Wanayasa, Pejawaran and Batur Districts. . This study aims to formulate the direction of land use for settlements, determine the suitability of the spatial plan, the direction of landslide disaster mitigation and determine the availability of land for the development of settlements in the Northern Region of Banjarnegara Regency. This research method uses quantitative analysis methods and qualitative descriptive analysis using ArcGIS software, namely by analyzing the landslide hazard index, landslide hazard vulnerability index, land capability, settlement land suitability, projection of residential land needs. The results of the study found that the landslide hazard level was Low, Medium and High with a total area of high landslide hazard class of 5.576 Ha, medium hazard area of 5.245 Ha and low hazard area of 17,238 Ha. The level of vulnerability to landslide hazards has a vulnerability level of Low, Medium and High with a total area of 5,871 Ha for low vulnerability, 4,815.7 for medium vulnerability and 133.6 Ha for high vulnerability. while the potential lives exposed to the danger of landslides is 21,763 people, the potential physical loss is Rp. 116.60.000.000,-, the potential economic loss is Rp. 19.602. The land capability in the northern area of Banjarnegara Regency has a Medium Development Capacity Zone class with an area of 4,689 Ha and Enough Development Capacity with an area of 33,695 Ha. The Suitability of Settlement Land has a Very Suitable category of 1,482 Ha (4%), an SUIT category of 16,576 Ha (43%), an Unsuitable category of 19,454 Ha (51%), and an Unsuitable category of 871 Ha (2%). The projection of residential land needs in 2040 found the need for residential land with a total area of 1,574 Ha and based on the results of the analysis of the direction of land use for settlement development in the northern area of Banjarnegara Regency, it has a total area of 5,790 Ha, with the level of conformity with the plan for the pattern of settlement space with the category of Appropriate for an area of 1,263 Ha. (52%) and the Unsuitable category covering an area of 1.181 Ha (48%). Landslide disaster mitigation directions for residential areas that are in the landslide-prone zone, namely for relocation are 10 Ha (2%), area protection directions are 132 Ha (23%) and adaptation directions are 436 Ha (75%). Based on the results of the analysis of the direction of land use for settlements in the northern region of Banjarnegara Regency, it is still sufficient with the availability of surplus land of 4,216 Ha.

Assessment of irrigational indices in surface water and shallow groundwater in the alluvial plain of Barak Valley, Assam, Northeast India

The main sources of water resources of the Barak Valley of Northeast India for irrigation are the surface water bodies in the form of ponds, lakes, rivers, and groundwater. This paper elucidates insight into the irrigational parameters to classify the types of water, based on these indices. Total hardness shows that 90% of surface water belongs to the soft and 63% of groundwater samples belong to the soft category. C‐S plot shows 33% of surface water belongs to C1‐S1 and 66% of groundwater samples belongs to C1‐S1 and C2‐S1, indicating fresh and suitable for use. The percentage Na+ shows most samples belong to good and permissible categories. Permeability index shows 81% of surface water in Class II and 18% in Class III, indicating good and bad types, respectively. Kelly's index suggests 90% of surface water is suitable and 9% is unsuitable, while 14% of piedmont groundwater is unsuitable. Magnesium hazard reveals 18% of surface water has more than 50 Magnesium absorptio ratio, leading to unsuitable, while 28% of piedmont and 33% of flood plain groundwater samples belong to unsuitable. Residual sodium carbon suggests surface water as suitable, while 48%, 12%, and 6% of groundwater belong to suitable, marginal, and unsuitable categories, respectively. Irrigation Water Quality Index values indicate that surface water is characterized by a highly restricted class, as they are exposed to surficial contamination as compared to groundwater. Base exchange index of ions indicates Na+‐SO4−2 hydro‐facies type suggesting dissolution of salt minerals in weak acidic water. Meteoric genesis index of ions reveals the source of groundwater as deeper meteoric water. Thus, the present study indices that the surface water bodies such as ponds, lakes, and swamps are more prone to contamination, leading to unsuitability for irrigational use, as compared to shallow groundwater in the study area, and therefore, appropriate measures must be adopted to reduce the quality deterioration for maximum utilization.

Assessment of variation in water quality at Right Bank Outfall Drain, including Manchar lake, Sindh, Pakistan

ABSTRACT Right Bank Outfall Drain (RBOD) is a drainage canal being built on the right side of river Indus, Sindh Pakistan and will carry saline water from Balochistan and Northern Sindh to Arabian Sea coast. It is still at different stages for completion. Thirteen samples were collected from RBOD III and RBOD I (Hairdin Pumping Stations, Balochistan to Sehwan, Manchar lake, Sindh), and a reference sample was collected from river Indus at Kotri Barrage. The sampling scheme was repeated three times in 2009 and 11 samples were collected from RBOD I during 2018. The water samples were analysed for about 27–41 different parameters, including physicochemical, cations, anions, trace metals and the presence of microbiological organisms. The variation in the water quality was examined pre- and post-monsoon season and flows of water at Kotri Barrage. A significant variation was observed in quality of water pre and post monsoon. Higher concentrations were reported during pre-monsoon season. The water quality index (WQI) indicated that most of the samples were within poor water category for both drinking and irrigation purposes. Gibb’s diagrams demonstrated that evaporation was dominant (85.7%) on the hydrochemistry of the water samples. The Cd, Pb, Ni, Cr and As crossed the permissible limits at a number of sampling stations. The water samples were also examined for multivariate analysis including principal component analysis (PCA), cluster analysis, piper diagrams and coefficient of variation. Chloride (Cl−) and sodium were dominant, followed by calcium, magnesium, sulphate and bicarbonate. The average values of analyses (n = 4) indicated RSD within 4.0%. The samples were examined for possible use for irrigation and 53–92% samples collected from RBOD (n = 14) were within unsuitable category for irrigation.

Evaluation of spatio-temporal variations in physico-chemical limnology, trophic status and cyanobacterial diversity of an impacted tropical reservoir, India for its sustainable management

ABSTRACT For natural ecosystems as well as human development, freshwater bodies like reservoirs are critically important. Krishnagiri reservoir, a moderately impacted tropical reservoir of India, is an important source of freshwater. However, eutrophication status due to anthropogenic activities is a major threat to this reservoir. This endeavour aimed to determine the spatio-temporal differences for selected (21) limnological parameters along with trophic status of Krishnagiri reservoir for its sustainable management. Samples (water and plankton) were collected from 11 sites covering entire reservoir during pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon season. Limnological parameters showed some spatio-temporal variations, the season has more impacts on water quality than sites as evidenced by cluster analysis. Principal component analysis distinguished the seasons based on major influencing water quality parameters. The reservoir trophic status fluctuated from eutrophic to hyper-eutrophic. Water quality index showed that the reservoir falls under unsuitable category. Additionally, cyanobacterial bloom formation was observed in all the seasons, with dominance of Microcystis sp. This investigation can be used as a baseline for studies pertaining to nutrient and sediment loading, and immediate action is required for employment of integrated management plan to restore this aquatic ecosystem. The study also recommends strategies for sustainable management of the aquatic bioresources.

Investigation of Geochemical Characterization and Groundwater Quality with Special Emphasis on Health Risk Assessment in Alluvial Aquifers, South Africa

The Maputaland coastal plain of KwaZulu-Natal is one of the popular tourist areas in South Africa. Groundwater is the major source for drinking and irrigation purposes which is abstracted from unconsolidated aquifers having higher infiltration rate possibly increases the risk of aquifer contamination. Comprehensive study was conducted in 53 groundwater monitoring wells to identify the characteristic of water quality and processes controlling groundwater chemistry using multiple methods. Rock-water interaction and Na/Ca ion exchange are the dominant processes. Water quality index (WQI) varies from 18.9 to 157.1 with an average value of 45.55. Majority of the samples are classified as good, 22% as poor, 2% as very poor and 7% under unsuitable category, which are spatially distributed towards southern and western part of the study area. Health risk assessment of trace elements via ingestion and dermal absorption pathways was carried out. Hazard quotient through dermal absorption (HQdermal) and hazard index (HI) for Co and Mn are above 1 in adults, children and infants. HQdermal and HI for Cd are greater than 1 in children and infants. HQdermal and HI for As and Pb are greater than 1 in infants. This implies that these metals pose serious to adverse health risk on people while infants are more vulnerable than children and adults. This study provides the baseline data on hydro geochemistry that can be utilised for further studies in future. This study recommends that groundwater in this region should be treated before utilisation and suggest that further extended studies should be conducted to explore more on groundwater resources in this area.

Optimization of the Weighted Linear Combination Method for Agricultural Land Suitability Evaluation Considering Current Land Use and Regional Differences

This study was aimed at optimizing the weighted linear combination method (WLC) for agricultural land suitability evaluation (ALSE) through indicator selection, weight determination, and classification of overall suitability scores in Handan, China. Handan is a representative research area with distinct agricultural advantages and regional differences in land use, where the expansion of construction land has led to a rapid decrease of agricultural land in recent years. Natural factors (topography, climate, soil conditions, and vegetation cover) and socioeconomic factors (land use and spatial accessibility) were selected to establish a more comprehensive evaluation system. The index weight was calculated by the mutual information between index suitability and current land use. The consistency index was used to identify the boundary value dividing the overall suitability score into a suitable category and unsuitable category in each sub-region. The results demonstrated that the optimized WLC-ALSE model outperformed the comparison models using conventional methods in terms of the consistency between the evaluation results and current land use. Owing to the increasing limitations of topography, soil conditions, spatial accessibility, and land use, the proportions of suitable land in Zone 1, Zone 2, and Zone 3 were 77.4%, 67.5%, and 30.9%, respectively. The agricultural land unsuitable for agriculture (14.5%) was less than non-agricultural land suitable for agriculture (7.4%), indicating that agricultural land had low growth potential in Handan. Finally, specific recommendations were made to improve agricultural land suitability, alleviate land use conflicts, and further optimize the model. The results can provide effective guidance for WLC-ALSE and land use decision-making for sustainable agriculture.

Irrigation risk assessment of groundwater in a non-perennial river basin of South India: implication from irrigation water quality index (IWQI) and geographical information system (GIS) approaches

Groundwater is an important natural resource for irrigation purpose in the non-perennial River basin (Shanmuganadhi) of South India. The present investigation was conducted to determine the groundwater suitability for irrigation purpose, using irrigation water quality index (IWQI) with the application of GIS. A total of 61 groundwater samples collected from the present study region were chemically analyzed such as TDS, EC, pH, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, HCO3−, Cl−, and SO42−. Groundwater quality shows slight alkalinity (7.11–7.95). The Wilcox, USSL, and Doneen’s diagrams, and RSC, KR, and MHR indices indicate that maximum groundwater sampling locations fall under the unsuitable category for irrigation purpose. According to the classification of IWQI, 57% of the total groundwater samples belongs to the poor to unsuitable water quality types for irrigation. The spatial distribution of IWQI displays that 77.27% of the present study region comes under the vulnerable zones such as moderate restriction (51.99%, high restriction (23.10%), and severe restriction (2.18%) water quality for irrigation purpose. Therefore, the present study suggests the suitable treatment methods for increasing the soil permeability and thereby to improve the crop production.

Hydrochemical Characteristics, Groundwater Quality and Sources of Solute in the Ramganga Aquifer, Central Ganga Plain, Bareilly District, Uttar Pradesh

Abstract The quality of groundwater is determined in parts of Ramganga basin, Bareilly, UP, India. Spatial variation of all the major ions shows south-eastern increasing trend except chloride and sulphate. Groundwater in the area belongs to the Mg2+-Ca2+-HCO3- cation facies. The monsoonal rainfall changes the ionic abundance order from HCO3->Cl->NO3>SO4-2> F-and Mg2+> Ca2+> K+>Na+ of pre-monsoon to HCO3->Cl-> SO4-2>NO3->F- and Na+> Mg2+> Ca2+> K+ of post-monsoon. Solute acquisition processes indicated that the rock weathering is the major mechanism of ions sources in groundwater. A coupled carbonate and silicate weathering type along with ion exchange processes are responsible for particular groundwater chemistry. Groundwater quality parameters were tested for drinking, irrigation and corrosion purposes. It is found that 8.5%, 26%, 49%, 14% and 3% of the samples fall under the excellent, good, poor, very poor and unsuitable category respectively. SAR, Na%, RSC and Kelly index suggests that groundwater is safe for irrigation purposes. But high TDS of few samples suggested the salinity hazard while using it for irrigation purposes. Low CR values indicated a lower degree of corrosion hazard to the underground metal pipelines in the area.

Spatial Analysis of Sustainable Land Use Development Coastal Areas in Batang Regency

Batang Regency as the northern coastal area of Java islandexperiences a problem of land use management that has not been optimal so that there is a need for analysis of land use development in the coastal area of Batang Regency. The purpose of this study is to examine the direction of land use development in coastal areas of Batang Regency with spatial analysis. This research method implementsquantitative approach while the analytical techniqueis spatial analysis. Spatial analysis is performed to identify land use of thecoastal area in Batang Regency. The study scope of coastal areasis based on administrative subdistricts located along the coast of Batang Regency. This research utilizes Spot satellite image year 2015 with the map of regionalspatial pattern plan of Batang Regency in 20112031. The spatial analysis result of land use developmentinBatang Regency’s coastal area includes the suitable category of 18.130,65 (56,32%) while the unsuitable category is 14.059,44 (43,68%). Batang Sub-district’s suitable category is 1.214,03 ha, while the unsuitable category is 2.220,51 ha. Kandeman Sub-district’s suitable category is 1.565.02 ha, while the unsuitable category is 2.610,65 ha. TulisSub-district’ssuitablecategory is 2.452,98 ha, while the unsuitable category is 2.055,80 ha. Subah Sub-district’ssuitablecategory is 5.381,89 ha, while the unsuitable category is 2.970,28 ha. Banyuputih Sub-district’s suitable category is 2.314,61 ha, while the unsuitable category is 2.127,89 ha. Gringsing Subdistrict’s suitablecategory is 5.202,12 ha, while the unsuitable categoryis 2.074,31 ha.The conclusion of land use planning development for Batang and Kandeman Sub-districts is that there are still a lot of lands designated for residential development. Subah Sub-district is for fisheries development while Tulis, Banyuputih, and Gringsing Sub-districts are for industrial development.

Evaluation of potable groundwater zones identification based on WQI and GIS techniques in Adyar River basin, Chennai, Tamilnadu, India

The main objective of this study is to identify the potable groundwater zones in Adyar River Basin (ARB) that forms the major river of Chennai metropolitan and significantly contributes to the demands of this big city's water supply. Twenty eight groundwater samples were collected during postmonsoon and premonsoon seasons in 2016 from the wells of ARB which is downstream of Chembarambakkam Lake, which supplies drinking water to Chennai metropolitan city. All the water samples were analyzed using Portable meter and Ion Chromatography for physico-chemical parameters and major ions such as pH, TDS, Ca, Mg, Na, K, Cl, HCO3, SO4 and NO3. The analytical results were compared with the WHO, USEPA & BIS guideline values and reported that some of the samples exceeds these guideline values for drinking water quality. Spatial distribution maps were prepared to identify the potable groundwater available regions based on these water quality parameters. Piper and Gibbs plots are generated to identify the nature and type of groundwater with processes controls the groundwater chemistry. Principal component analysis was done to interpret the possible sources of chemical compounds present in the groundwater. To precisely delineate the potable groundwater region in ARB, Water Quality Index (WQI) approach is employed with the basic water quality parameters and spatial distribution maps were prepared using GIS for the obtained indexes. It is found that only 10.71% and 17.86% of the study area groundwater is within the excellent water quality for drinking during postmonsoon and premonsoon respectively, whereas 42.86% in postmonsoon and 14.29% in premonsoon is found as poor quality groundwater for drinking. The groundwater of the northwestern and western part of ARB is under very poor and unsuitable category for drinking in both the seasons. This region of ARB is recommended for implementation of artificial groundwater recharging to improve the groundwater quality and make it suitable for drinking.

Hydrochemical monitoring of groundwater quality for drinking and irrigation use in Rapti Basin

In the present study, groundwater of Siddhartha Nagar district was investigated to ascertain its quality for drinking and irrigation purposes based on Groundwater Quality Index (GWQI) and irrigation indices. Inverse Distance-Weighted (IDW) application was also used to prepare the spatial distribution maps of each groundwater quality parameter. It is observed that Total Dissolved Solid (TDS) in 41.6% of samples and Total Hardness (TH) concentrations in 75% (BIS)/100% (WHO) of samples were much higher than the permissible limit. GWQI values reveal that none of the samples has an excellent quality of water and 16.7% samples having good water quality. Similarly, 33.3%, 41.7% and 8.3% of samples has a fair, poor and very poor water quality respectively. Results from the Piper plot showed that Ca–HCO3 is the dominant hydrochemical facies. All samples were found in the rock dominance zone in Gibbs plots. Based on residual sodium carbonate (RSC) and soluble sodium percentage (SSP), 8.33% and 33.33% of the samples were found to be in the poor category and according to Kelly’s ratio (KR) 8.33% of the samples were found in unsuitable category. Permeability Index (PI) indicates that 50% of the groundwater samples were found in Class I (suitable) and 50% in Class II (marginally suitable) category for irrigation purpose.

Hydrochemical characteristics of the groundwater in Trans-Yamuna Alluvial aquifer, Palwal District, Haryana, India

Hydrochemical processes have been evaluated for the groundwater regime in Trans-Yamuna alluvial aquifer, Palwal District, Haryana. The groundwater belongs to the Na+–Mg+2 and Cl−–SO4−2 facies, and solute acquisition processes indicated that the rock weathering/evaporation is a major mechanism that characterizes the hydrochemistry. It is also indicated that dissolution and reverse ion exchange processes are playing a major role in determining the groundwater chemistry in the study area. The varied climate in Ganga plains is responsible for the importance of different hydrogeochemical processes that impact on hydrochemistry of groundwater. Groundwater quality parameters were tested for drinking and irrigation purposes. Water quality index shows that 13%, 31%, 34% and 21% fall in good, poor, very poor and unsuitable water category, respectively, for drinking purposes. On the basis of SAR and Na%, the groundwater indicated that it is safe for irrigation purposes. But high TDS of few samples suggested the salinity hazard while using it for irrigation purposes for a longer period.

Source rock weathering and groundwater suitability for irrigation in Purna alluvial basin, Maharashtra, central India

Purna alluvial basin is characterized by low to high level groundwater salinity having adverse effect in a large area, however, the basin still lacks one-time data of any season regarding hydrogeochemistry and quality assessment for drinking and irrigation purposes. The present work is aimed to determine various weathering indices and estimation of groundwater quality for irrigation purpose. The interpretations are based on the study of total 158 samples, collected from dug wells (60) and bore wells (98) during both pre- and post-monsoon periods of the year 2009. The plots between Ca+Mg vs. SO4+HCO3, Na vs. Cl and Na vs. HCO3 reveal that most of the samples fall below the equiline that indicates prevalence of silicate weathering. The USSL diagram (Wilcox diagram) demonstrates higher concentration of points in the fields of C2S1 and C3S1 for both the aquifers, indicating high salinity and low to medium sodium water; however, a few sample points positioned in C3S4 and C4S4 fields indicate high salinity but medium to high sodium. The values of Na%, RSC, Kelley ratio and magnesium ratio for most of samples exhibit doubtful to unsuitable categories of groundwater for irrigation from both the aquifers during pre- and post-monsoon periods. The vast data bank generated for entire basin is significant for government and non-government organizations for future planning and management.
