Miners' Welfare National Scholarships

THE trustees of the Miners' Welfare National Scholarship Scheme invite applications for a limited number of university scholarships for award in 1944 ; there are, in addition, a limited number of exhibitions available for award to the most meritorious of the unsuccessful candidates for scholarships. Candidates must be either workers in or about coal mines in Great Britain, or sons or daughters of such workers, and should not normally be less than seventeen years of age on January 25, 1944. Forms of application and full particulars may be obtained from the Secretary, Miners' Welfare National Scholarship Scheme, Ashley Court, Ashtead, Surrey. Applicants for forms must state whether they apply as workers in or about mines or as children of such workers ; those who come within both categories should apply as miners. Applicants already at a university should state, when applying for forms, whether they are first-year students. Application forms must be returned by January 25.

The selection of men for the Nebraska Safety Patrol.

Early in 1937 the legislature of the State of Nebraska created the Nebraska Safety Patrol. Primarily its function was to be the promotion of safety on the state highways but coincident with this was its function of law enforcement. The directors of the patrol initiated a program of testing and training which aimed to select the better men from the large number of applicants for positions on the patrol. This study is an interpretative inquiry into the procedures used in selecting the Nebraska Safety Patrol. The Transvaal

Abstract We publish in the present issue the papers set in last year's sitting of above. They may be useful as affording a means of comparisian with the local papers. The examination in the theory. of land surveying is really conducted by the University of the Cape of Good Hope, and it is claimed that the standard of proficiency is higher than that demanded in Canada and Australasia. Those interested now have an opportunity of judging if this contention is warranted. Apparently the standard is too high for the taste of certain unsuccessful candidates, for the authorities respono;ible for the conduct of the Examination have been taken severely to task, not only by the rejection themselves, but also by the “South African Review,” and other publications who have taken up their cause. The grounds of complaint are as follows: (1) Shortness of time allowed for answering questions; (2) secrecy as to the names of examiners who set the papers; (3) prohibition against candidates carrying away examination papers on leaving the examination room; (4) want of impartiality on the part of examiners; (5) want of qualifications on their part; (6) unfairness of marks awarded.

This fact substantiates the remarks of Dr. T. A. Borton in his article "The Turning Down of the Old Practitioner" published inThe Journal, August 22, p. 505, with the exception that here the other unsuccessful candidates were nearly all recent graduates. Not knowing the questions asked and judging from the markings alone, I have nothing to say against this particular examining board; but I would like to have the following remarks reach those members of the profession who have more influence and power than has the average general practitioner.
