The genesis of most older medicinal agents has generally been empirical. During the past one and a half centuries, at least in the Western countries, discovering and developing drugs has been primarily the domain of pharmaceutical companies largely built upon concepts emerging from organic chemistry. Public sector funding for the discovery of new therapeutics has more recently stimulated local, national, and international groups to band together and focus on new human disease targets and novel treatment approaches. This Perspective describes one contemporary example of a newly formed collaboration that was simulated by a regional drug discovery consortium. University of Virginia, Old Dominion University, and a university spinout company, KeViRx, Inc., partnered under a NIH Small Business Innovation Research grant, to produce potential therapeutics for acute respiratory distress syndrome resulting from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The pre-foundation evolution of proactiveness in born global and non-born global USOs

ABSTRACT This article adds to existing work on the drivers of early internationalization by exploring how born globals’ proactiveness evolves during their pre-foundation period and influences their internationalization timing post-foundation. We perform a comparative, qualitative field study of born globals and non-born globals based on 22 university spin-out companies. The findings reveal that proactiveness during pre-foundation, which emerged as an evolutionary nonlinear process in both categories of firms, was critical in facilitating or inhibiting early internationalization. It emerged that born globals behaved reactively during the earliest phases of pre-foundation, and gradually became more proactive as the firm approached formal foundation. Conversely, non-born globals first behaved proactively and, as the firm moved toward formal foundation, became more reactive. The findings bear important theoretical implications for international entrepreneurship, as well as for literature on university spin-outs and new venture behavior, by generating new context-specific, processual evidence on the role of pre-foundation proactiveness as an antecedent of USO early internationalization.

Novel use of COMET parameters of sperm DNA damage may increase its utility to diagnose male infertility and predict live births following both IVF and ICSI.

Do the Comet parameters of the proportions of sperm with low or high DNA damage improve the power of the test in the diagnosis of male infertility and/or prediction of IVF and ICSI live birth rates? The mean Comet score and the scores for proportions of sperm with high or low DNA damage were useful in diagnosing male infertility and provided additional discriminatory information for the prediction of both IVF and ICSI live births. Sperm DNA damage impacts adversely on male fertility and IVF outcomes. A retrospective study was performed involving a total of 457 participants (381 patients and 76 fertile donors). Data was collected from a fertility clinic between 2015 and 2017. A total of 381 consecutive male partners of couples attending for ART and 76 fertile donors were included in the study. DNA fragmentation was measured by the alkaline Comet assay. Receiver operator characteristic curve analysis (area under the ROC curve (AUC)) was used to determine the value of average Comet score (ACS), low Comet score (LCS) and high Comet score (HCS) to diagnose male factor infertility. In total, 77 IVF and 226 ICSI cycles were included to determine thresholds for each parameter (AUC analysis) and to compare live birth rates (LBRs) following each ART. ACS, HCS and LCS were predictive of male infertility (AUC > 0.9, P< 0.0001). IVF LBRs declined once DNA damage exceeded the threshold levels. HCS showed the sharpest decline. Following ICSI, the highest LBRs were in men whose DNA damage levels approached the fertile range. Trends differed in IVF. LBRs decreased as damage increased whereas in ICSI the LBRs decreased but then remained stable. Since this is the first study to show the impact of sperm DNA damage on ICSI live births, a prospective study should be performed (stratifying patients to IVF or ICSI based on these thresholds) to validate this study. Our study presents novel information towards elucidating the genetic basis of male infertility and secondly on relevance of the extent of DNA damage as an impending factor in both IVF and ICSI success. Redefining roles and identities in higher education: the liminal experiences of a university spinout company

Across many developed economies, policy foregrounds the role of innovation in stimulating economic recovery and underpinning growth. Higher education is expected to contribute significantly to the innovation agenda. This paper examines one example of innovation in the UK higher education context, namely the creation of a spinout company, and explores its implications for the individual knowledge worker. Focusing on the developing professional identities of those involved, the narrative draws on data from an ethnographic study of the birth of a university spinout company and its eventual launch as an independent company. Utilising the concept of ‘third space’ to frame the spinout experience, it argues that individuals engaging in ‘innovative’ activities of a commercial nature in higher education develop hybrid roles at the margins of their organisations. The extent to which these are tenable over the longer term is debated.

Conducting retrospective impact analysis to inform a medical research charity's funding strategies: the case of Asthma UK.

BackgroundDebate is intensifying about how to assess the full range of impacts from medical research. Complexity increases when assessing the diverse funding streams of funders such as Asthma UK, a charitable patient organisation supporting medical research to benefit people with asthma. This paper aims to describe the various impacts identified from a range of Asthma UK research, and explore how Asthma UK utilised the characteristics of successful funding approaches to inform future research strategies.MethodsWe adapted the Payback Framework, using it both in a survey and to help structure interviews, documentary analysis, and case studies. We sent surveys to 153 lead researchers of projects, plus 10 past research fellows, and also conducted 14 detailed case studies. These covered nine projects and two fellowships, in addition to the innovative case studies on the professorial chairs (funded since 1988) and the MRC-Asthma UK Centre in Allergic Mechanisms of Asthma (the ‘Centre’) which together facilitated a comprehensive analysis of the whole funding portfolio. We organised each case study to capture whatever academic and wider societal impacts (or payback) might have arisen given the diverse timescales, size of funding involved, and extent to which Asthma UK funding contributed to the impacts.ResultsProjects recorded an average of four peer-reviewed journal articles. Together the chairs reported over 500 papers. All streams of funding attracted follow-on funding. Each of the various categories of societal impacts arose from only a minority of individual projects and fellowships. Some of the research portfolio is influencing asthma-related clinical guidelines, and some contributing to product development. The latter includes potentially major breakthroughs in asthma therapies (in immunotherapy, and new inhaled drugs) trialled by university spin-out companies. Such research-informed guidelines and medicines can, in turn, contribute to health improvements. The role of the chairs and the pioneering collaborative Centre is shown as being particularly important.ConclusionsWe systematically demonstrate that all types of Asthma UK’s research funding assessed are making impacts at different levels, but the main societal impacts from projects and fellowships come from a minority of those funded. Asthma UK used the study’s findings, especially in relation to the Centre, to inform research funding strategies to promote the achievement of impact.

News: Coventry hydrogen fuel station creates West Midlands ring

The West Midlands now has a &apos;hydrogen ring&apos;, following the official opening this month of a third fuelling station for hydrogen-powered vehicles. The site at Coventry University&apos;s technology park complements those at the Universities of Birmingham and Loughborough. The hydrogen fuel pumps are part of a regional project called CABLED (Coventry and Birmingham Low Emission Vehicle Demonstrators), which is to test a fleet of 108 alternative-fuelled vehicles. Most of these will be electric, but eight are hydrogen fuel-cell/electric hybrid Microcabs, developed by a Coventry University spin-out company.

The creation of university spin-out companies that create wealth is a major policy objective of governments and universities. Finance is a catalyst of this wealth creation yet access to venture capital is a major impediment faced by these companies. In this article we adopt a finance pecking order perspective to examine the problems faced by those university spin-out companies seeking to access venture capital. We triangulate evidence from spin-out companies, university technology transfer offices and venture capital firms in the UK and Continental Europe to identify the problems and to suggest policy developments for these parties as well as government. We compare perceptions of high-tech venture capital firms that invest in spin-outs with those that do not, and also consider VCs’ views on spin-outs versus other high-tech firms. Our evidence identifies a mismatch between the demand and supply side of the market. In line with the pecking order theory, venture capitalists prefer to invest after the seed stage. However, in contrast to the pecking order theory, TTOs see venture capital as more important than internal funds early on. We develop policy implications for universities, technology transfer offices, academic entrepreneurs, venture capital firms and government and suggest areas for further research.

Envirox™ fuel-borne catalyst: Developing and launching a nano-fuel additive

The paper presents a product case study tracing the challenges of commercialization from research and product development to market launch. Envirox™ is a diesel fuel additive containing nanoparticles of cerium oxide, which enables fuel efficiency gains alongside reductions in harmful emissions such as black carbon (soot). The case traces developmental stages from lab experimentation and performance data sets, to raising finance, securing manufacturing capability and market testing in Hong Kong and the UK. The paper raises a number of generic and specific issues facing innovative small, university spin-out companies engaged in introducing nano-products to the market-place.

Wireless monitor for cathodic protection in remote sites: a case study for a university spin-out company

This paper describes how a new spin-out company managed to develop a product and bring it to market. The product, a wireless monitor system for use on cathodic protection equipment, is described briefly with emphasis on the main technical challenge of ultra low power demand.The rest of the paper is devoted to the real challenges facing a new spin-out company: ensuring that its product has a market and obtaining the finance to develop it. It shows how government grants and collaboration with an established company can help.

The Role of University Spinout Companies in an Emerging Technology: The Case of Nanotechnology

This study examines the role of university spin-out (USO) companies in the emergence of a new technology, in our case nanotechnology. Three unique data-sets based on patents, co-publications, and firm data pertaining to the unfolding field of nanotechnology in the UK were developed. Subsequent analysis suggests that USOs play an important though not a dominant role. Furthermore, the results indicate that USOs in certain subfields of nanotechnology do not have a strong and growing proprietary technology base, raising questions about the commercial sustainability of these ventures. Overall, we observed that USOs are important contributors to technological change in specific subfields of nanotechnology, but that other actors, notably, large firms and (non-university affiliated) new technology-based firms are even more significant agents of technological change.

Gender and the commercialization of university science: academic founders of spinout companies

There is a great deal of interest in Europe and the USA on the commercialization of university science, particularly the creation of spinout companies from the science base. Despite considerable research on academic entrepreneurship, female entrepreneurship in general, and the causes of under-representation of female scientists in academic institutions, there has been little research on the influence of gender on academic entrepreneurship. The study researches female founders of UK university spinout companies using information from the Internet on company founders of spinout companies from 20 leading universities. The proportion of female founders at 12% is very low. The paper explores reasons for this low representation through follow-up postal interviews of the 21 female founders identified, and a male control sample. Under-representation of female academic staff in science research is the dominant but not the only factor to explain low entrepreneurial rates amongst female scientists. Owing to the low number of women in senior research positions in many leading science departments, few women had the chances to lead a spinout. This is a critical factor as much impetus for commercialization was initially inspired by external interest rather than internal evaluation of a commercial opportunity. External interest tended to target senior academics, which proportionally are mostly male. A majority of the women surveyed tended to be part of entrepreneurial teams involving senior male colleagues. As a whole both male and female science entrepreneurs displayed similar motivations to entrepreneurship, but collectively as scientists differed appreciably from non academic entrepreneurs. Women science entrepreneurs also faced some additional problems in areas such as the conflict between work and home life and networks.

There has been criticism in the Lambert Review of Business–University Collaboration in 2003, commissioned by the UK Government in 2003, that there have been too many spin-outs of low quality and that a measure of quality is the amount of external equity they attract. This has been refuted by Dr Williams of the University of Warwick technology transfer office. Oxford University has created 42 companies with no failures. The rigorous process involved in the creation of an Oxford spin-out is given in some detail. The author then goes on to discuss his experiences of other university spin-out models. Finally, some of the tax problems that caused universities across the UK to stop spinning-out companies recently are discussed. In conclusion despite the criticisms, the author believes the process of creating companies to commercialise university R &amp; D is critical to the overall success of UK plc in the long term.

Resources, capabilities, risk capital and the creation of university spin-out companies

The commercialization of university research has become an increasingly important issue, given concerns regarding licensing and the university's desire to maximize the returns to intellectual property (IP). In this paper, we assess the impact of university resources and routines/capabilities on the creation of spin-out companies. We find that both the number of spin-out companies created and the number of spin-out companies created with equity investment are significantly positively associated with expenditure on intellectual property protection, the business development capabilities of technology transfer offices and the royalty regime of the university. These results highlight the importance not just of resource stocks, but also of developing appropriate capabilities of technology transfer officers in spinning-out companies. The results suggest that universities and policy-makers need to devote attention to the training and recruitment of technology officers with the broad base of commercial skills.
