Middle Atlantic Regional Meeting awards to Ipsita Banerjee and Barbara Hillery

Ipsita Banerjee , a professor of chemistry at Fordham University, has been named the 2023 E. Emmet Reid Award in Chemistry for Teaching at Small Colleges in the American Chemical Society Middle Atlantic Region. Banerjee was cited in the nomination materials as the ideal teacher and mentor who “meets students where they are” and uses enthusiastic and supportive instructional strategies to lead students to high achievement in chemistry and biochemistry. Barbara Hillery , an associate provost at the State University of New York at Old Westbury, has been named the 2023 E. Ann Nalley Middle Atlantic Region Award for Volunteer Service to the American Chemical Society. Hillery was cited as generously using her time and talent to support the mission and goals of ACS at the subsection, local, regional, and national levels. New Strategies Show Promise for Concussion

COVID-19 experiences and psychopathology symptoms in college students at the onset of the pandemic

Objective: The present study examined what specific aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to psychopathology symptoms among college students during the initial stages of the pandemic. Participants: One thousand and eighty-nine college students (Mage = 20.73, SDage = 2.93) enrolled at a university in New York participated in the study between March and May 2020. Methods: Participants completed self-report measures assessing pandemic-related experiences and psychopathology symptoms. Results: Results indicated that greater COVID-19-related life changes were uniquely associated with greater depression and post-traumatic stress symptoms. Greater concerns about school, home confinement, and basic needs were uniquely associated with greater depression symptoms. Finally, greater COVID-19 infection concerns were uniquely associated with greater generalized anxiety and post-traumatic stress symptoms. Conclusion: The present study indicates that the COVID-19 pandemic had a multifaceted impact on undergraduate students and that specific COVID-19 experiences contributed to higher rates of psychopathology symptoms.

Current debates and emerging trends in the history of science in premodern Islamicate societies.

This roundtable brings together contributions from nine senior, mid-career and junior scholars who work on the history of science in pre-1800 Islamicate societies. The contributions reflect upon some of the challenges that have historically constrained the subfield, how they have sought to overcome them, and what they see as some of the more productive and fruitful turns the field has taken and/or should take in the future. A central trend in all contributions is how they seek to confront the combined weight of colonialism, Orientalism, and the teleological history of science that continues to haunt contemporary discussions in both academia and the general public with regards to science in pre-1800 Islamicate societies. Without diminishing the pioneering achievements of the generations of historians who have preceded us, and upon whose work we continue to rely, this combined weight has tended a) to marginalize the study of occult sciences in Islamicate societies; b) to emphasize investigations of content from an etic perspective of how we got to the present, which is primarily seen as how the scientific content is connected to the rise of modern science in Europe; and c) to concomitantly marginalize the study of science in post-1200 Islamicate societies, particularly those with little to no connection to the rise of "Western" science. The contributions build upon conversations that took place among participants in December 2019 at a workshop at New York University (NYU), Abu Dhabi Institute in New York City, funded by a grant from NYU Abu Dhabi.

Improving Vulnerable Populations’ Emergent Reading Outcomes by Training Preservice Teachers in an Evidence-Based Program

ABSTRACT This article details a large-scale tutor-to-teacher pipeline created in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The program addressed two vital needs: 1) improving outcomes for striving readers in high-needs communities, and 2) improving teacher training in both evidence- and research-based instruction. Across school year (SY) 2020–2021 and 2021–2022, 608 preservice teachers delivered an evidence-based (Reading Rescue) or research-based (Reading Ready) early literacy intervention. Through a coordinated effort between the City University of New York (CUNY) and the NYC Department of Education (NYC DOE), 857 NYC DOE students received one-on-one, interactive, remote tutoring three to five days a week, for an average of 21 sessions. Results demonstrated that students who received the emergent word reading program, Reading Ready, improved in their phoneme segmentation and nonword reading skills by 31–47%, and students who received the follow-up evidence-based program, Reading Rescue, consistently improved by one intervention reading level per 10 sessions, and showed age equivalent reading gains of one-half to almost a full year of growth as measured by a standardized, nationally normed assessment. Discussion focuses on the value of this high-quality training and tutoring experience for preservice teachers and on the critical support provided to striving readers in underserved communities in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The New York Local Section of the American Chemical Society is hosting the 51st Middle Atlantic Regional Meeting (MARM) June 9–10. The meeting theme is “Chemistry Refocused.” The City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center will host Friday’s events, and St. John’s University will host Saturday’s K–12 educational programs. The technical sessions will take place Friday and cover six focus areas: chemistry of life sciences; cosmetic chemistry; environmental chemistry; flavors and fragrance chemistry; materials chemistry; and younger chemists symposia. The Information in Hedge Fund Option Holdings

We provide new insights on how hedge funds use options and short-selling channels to trade on their negative information. Bearish information in hedge fund option positions is economically large, distinct from information in short interest, and it is the combination of option positions and short interest that provides the strongest information signal. A portfolio of stocks with high short interest and bearish hedge fund option positions predicts negative abnormal returns that are more than four times as large as the portfolio with high short interest and bullish options positions. The information in hedge fund option positions increases during periods of market stress, whereas that in short interest does not. This increase is concentrated in capital-constrained hedge funds, suggesting that options provide a channel for capital-constrained hedge funds to exploit their information advantage.
