Editorial

This special section of PES is devoted to POLYCHAR 18 - World Forum for Advanced Materials. POLYCHAR 18 took place in Siegen, Germany, from April 7th to 10th, 2010. The Conference was organized by the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry and by the Institute of Physical Chemistry I at the University of Siegen and was held on the Campus of the university. It was sponsored by IUPAC. POLYCHAR offers a platform for sharing ideas, presenting results, meeting old and making new friends in the scientific community. Topics covered a wide areas, including synthesis, characterization, modification and application of all sorts of polymeric materials and composites, best summarized under the term ‘Advanced Materials’. More than 250 delegates from 40 different foreign countries and 5 continents participated, making made this event truly international. DAAD and IUPAC provided financial support for participation of students from underprivileged and developing countries, and DFG and Fonds der Chemischen Industrie supported the attendance of established researchers. Structure, Morphology and Properties of Polymers: characterization, testing, simulation/modeling Synthesis and Modification of Polymer Systems Polymeric Materials and Application: stimuli responsive systems, devices and processing Biorelated Polymers: bio-, medical- and sustainable approaches including recycling. The prestigious Paul J. Flory Polymer Research Prize 2010 was awarded to Prof. Andrzej Galeski from the Centre of Molecular and Macromolecular Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Sienkiewicza, Poland and to Prof. Hans Wolfgang Spiess from the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, Mainz, Germany. Prof. Galeski was honored for his “pioneering work on strength and toughness of semicrystalline polymers, blends and filled polymer systems”, and Prof. Spiess was recognized for his “pioneering work in the field of solid-state-NMR for the analysis of structure and dynamics of polymer systems”. Both laureates received the newly coined Flory Prize Medal. The next conference in the series, POLYCHAR 19, will be held in Kathmandu, Nepal from March 20 to 24, 2011. It will be hosted by Prof. Rameshwar Adhikari.

Spline‐Interpolation and Calculation of Machine Parameters for the Three‐Roll‐Pushbending of Spline‐Contours

AbstractToday, bending tasks become more and more complex. Not even constant bending radii are required in the industrial practice. There is a growing demand for bending spline‐contours, too. Such geometries are often produced with Freeform‐Bending procedures like Three‐Roll‐Pushbending.This paper presents a method to interpolate a given spline bending‐contour (by CAD data), in order to calculate its radii distribution, which is needed to determine the machine parameters in certain points for the Three‐Roll‐Pushbending. For the determination of the machine parameters one has to consider the different influences on the bending process. The material springback and the deflection of the bending machine per radius need to be compensated to reach a near net shape bending result. Nevertheless deviations cannot be avoided. To improve the results, a possibility to adjust the pre‐calculated machine parameters is shown.For the investigations tube profiles with constant wall thicknesses were considered. The corresponding plasticity calculations refer to tube cross‐sections. The results were validated by bending a representative spline contour on the bending machine of the Chair of Forming Technology at the University of Siegen.

‘Everything was Strange and Different’: Young Adults' Recollections of the Transition into Foster Care

When children enter a foster family they face a new family culture. At the University of Siegen, Germany, Daniela Reimer and her colleagues analysed biographies of young adults who had spent some of their lives in foster care. Their aim was to explore how children overcome these cultural changes and the approaches that help them cope. This article highlights the manifestations of cultural tensions which, although seemingly trivial to adults, are extremely important for children. It is suggested that this perspective complements other significant factors associated with the success of foster placements.

Local model networks

A multitude of functions in modern electronic control units (ECU) uses characterstic curves and look-up tables (LUT) for modeling. The increasing complexity of these models causes an exponential growing of the required calibration memory. Hence, this way of modeling with LUT is not feasible any longer. On this account, the University of Siegen developed in cooperation with Continental Automotive GmbH local model networks in fixed-point arithmetic for series-ECU, which provide a solution for this problem.

Outstanding Business Reference Sources

Each year, Business Reference Sources Committee of BRASS selects outstanding business reference sources published since May of previous year. This year, committee reviewed sixteen entries; of these, two were designated as Outstanding, six as Notable, and one as a Notable New Edition. To qualify for award, title must meet conventional definition of reference: a work compiled specifically to supply information on a certain subject or group of subjects in a form that will facilitate its ease of use. works are examined for following: authority and reputation of publisher, author, or editor; accuracy; appropriate bibliography; organization; comprehensiveness; value of content; currency; distinctive addition; ease of use for intended purpose; quality and accuracy of index; and quality and usefulness of graphics and illustrations. Additional criteria for electronic reference titles are accuracy of links, search features, stability of content, and graphic design. This insightful collection of works, edited by Ted Baker (North Carolina State University) and Friederike Walter (University of Siegen, Germany), explores diverse ideas, perspectives, theories, and methods in field of entrepreneurship scholarship. There exists a strong interest in entrepreneurship, from both scholars and practitioners, and research has moved from being an outlier to mainstream. This volume provides wide-ranging look at issues surrounding entrepreneurship, such as exploring definition of term entrepreneurship in creative industries and developing countries. Baker and Walter are enthusiastic about current scholarship in this area, stating in their opening chapter: the domain of entrepreneurship is broader, more contested, more energetic and more promising than it ever has been. Organizationally, book is divided into six broad themes and includes a brief introduction to each section. Readers will find additional recommended readings and references at end of each chapter. first section, The Discipline of explores history of field, philosophy of entrepreneurship, and what term entrepreneurship means to different groups. Reasons and Motivations for Entering Entrepreneurship examines why people engage in entrepreneurship--investigating passion, differences between entrepreneurs and other people, and those who start business after business. Next, Resources and Resourcefulness contains chapters on creativity entrepreneurs demonstrate in using available resources, microfinancing, and commercialization of inventions and discoveries at universities. Included is an interesting investigation into how families and households influence business decisions. book continues with positive and negative impacts of entrepreneurship on entrepreneurs and their families, communities, and broader society in Entrepreneurship, Wealth, and Wellbeing. In this section there is a fascinating look at area of criminal entrepreneurship. One of strengths of this book is inclusion of future research questions and, within this chapter, author suggests that researchers develop a better understanding of whether criminal entrepreneurship is merely a sub-discipline at nexus between entrepreneurship and criminology. Next, in Entrepreneurial Opportunity, researchers discuss differences in opportunities facing various groups, such as women in global south. Finally, Towards a Broader Understanding looks at methodological future of entrepreneurship research. There are chapters outlining steps for conducting a content analysis, potential areas for research in developing countries, techniques for getting inside entrepreneurs' hearts and minds, and a critical examination of research scholarship in field of entrepreneurship. …

Slip Control System for a Deep-Sea Mining Machine

Tracked vehicles capable of locomotion in the deep sea are used for manganese nodule mining. This requires specific technical solutions in various respects. Locomotion in the soft sea bed is one of them. For the Crawler to safely maneuver, an automatic drive mode with slip control of the driving tracks is essential. Based on experimental studies at IKS, University of Siegen, slip control for the NIOT-IKS mining machine has been developed and implemented. The experimental setup for the development of the slip control along with the logic of the automatic driving mode is described. The system is critically discussed and the test results and future work are briefly outlined. Note to Practitioners-The work is carried out as part of the polymetallic nodule mining program of the Government of India. The technique of slip control is a specific requirement for a tracked vehicle used in the deep sea. Slip is common in many vehicles-tracked and otherwise. Examples are steam engines in the early days and ordinary cars while negotiating slush or snow/ice and dozers working in soft soil. While these are manually controlled by drivers who have firsthand knowledge of the environmental conditions, in the case of a mining machine in deep sea, it has to be completely automatic and, hence, is challenging. The knowledge generated in this work could be effectively used by practitioners in other related areas of automobile engineering for updating their expertise. Also, similar techniques may be used for maneuvering vehicles sent to other planets

Quality Development in Supported Living Services for People with Learning Disabilities: Introducing AQUA‐UWO

This paper reports on the manual AQUA‐UWO, an instrument for quality development in supported living services developed by a research group at the Centre for Planning and Evaluation of Social Services at the University of Siegen in Germany. The extension of supported living services in Germany is still marked by conceptual and financial uncertainty. Debates about the concept and quality of supported living are still not advanced. Against this background, AQUA‐UWO identifies key issues for supported living and formulates professional standards for work in, and management of, supported living. Service user rights for self‐advocacy and self‐determination form the basis of quality assurance and development of supported living services. The first part of the instrument covers conceptual foundations, quality comprehension and methodical procedures. The second part covers key issues, identifies working procedures and clarifies quality standards. The third part includes materials which can be used to support the process of quality development.

DRIVER ASSISTANT FOR WARNING OF HIGH VELOCITY (FIELD OPERATION TEST)

A driver assistance system, which supports drivers by using a special strategy taking the road geometry in front of the vehicle into account, was developed and realized at the University of Siegen. Here, the velocity is exclusively controlled depending on road parameters. So, in front of a bend, the speed will be reduced in time. Behind the bend, the car can be accelerated again. Here, it is described, how a new driver assistant, which warns the driver when the speed of the vehicle is too high in front of a bend, is realized.

ROBOT AIRSHIP FOR EDUCATION AND RESEARCH – MODELLING AND CONTROL

At the University of Siegen a robot airship for cooperation with a heterogeneous multi-robot team is built to perform search and rescue as well as exploration missions. The airship control is based on an aerodynamic model derived from real airship models. The airship is able to fly autonomously over the operation field and is sharing sensor information with the ground based robots and a tele-operator.

Mobile Robots and Airship in a Multi-Robot Team

At the University of Siegen a heterogeneous multi-robot team is created to perform search and rescue or exploration missions. The robot team consists of ground based robots equipped with inertial sensors and 3D vision. The team is assisted by a robot airship flying over the operation field and sharing information with the ground based robots. All robots use a uniform user interface for tele control and additionallysupply force feedback manual operator control for human interaction.

The current situation of media and communication practice and the academic disciplines concerned with these domains is characterized by a multiplicity of approaches specific to individual disciplines and schools. The methodological scope corresponds to the dynamics of transformation processes in media industry, society and in those fields of research engaged with these changes. The institutional establishment of media studies and media-oriented higher education curricula, and the extension or reorganization of philology and literature departments, as well as institutes for theatre, film and television studies into larger teaching and research departments under the heading of communication or media studies is currently in rapid progression. There is no doubt that the tendency of media studies to transgress disciplinary boundaries and to constitute itself as an autonomous field of studies has to be seen in the context of overarching developmental trajectories in media politics and media technology, and the respective social responses they provoke. On the other hand, this tendency demarcates a stage or an episode in the transformation process of the humanities, in particular their media-oriented branches which draw increasingly closer to the social sciences, adapting theories, methods and results from communication studies, psychology, sociology, education studies, or market research. These developments establish not only a significantly increased demand for academic research and data on specific media from the perspectives of all disciplines concerned but also a demand for research and data made available in a problem-oriented way, that is with relevance for both practice and application. These demands cannot be met by literary, television or music studies only, nor by (media-) psychology, media sociology or any other ›hyphenated discipline‹ because in view of the current omnipresence and growing convergence of media as well as increasingly media-based constructions of reality, multimediality and multidimensionality are already inherent to the issues in question. This outline of the subject has been the guiding perspective of a conference titled ›Conceptions of Media Studies‹, held at University of Siegen from November 22nd to November 23rd, 2002, by the Institut für Medienforschung (Institute for Media Research), and sponsored by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). Conceived as a contribution towards clarifying problematic issues and encouraging communication between the different fields of research, the conference offered a platform for presenting and debating different conceptions of media studies as already established in recent years at German universities. Since media-oriented approaches belong to different disciplines, the agenda was structured around existing research priorities and disciplines. The aim of the conference was to elucidate the conceptual frameworks of various forms of media research institutionalisation from the points of view of and informed by the interests of the respective disciplines and fields of practical application, and to show trajectories in the context of further transdisciplinary research and teaching. This volume documents the proceedings of the conference. The individual referents’ contributions represent, in their respective degrees of elaboration, positions and precise perceptions of those disciplines involved in the symposium. Each of the four panels — cultural studies, film and television studies, communication studies / social sciences (LiLi 132), informatics / design (LiLi 133) — is introduced briefly by the panel chairs and the discussion leader, and supplemented by the main points of the subsequent discussions. Gebhard Rusch’s concluding essay summarizes the conference results.

Supporting communities of practice in applied computer science studies

The authors discuss the experience of a longitudinal study of the course "High-tech Entrepreneurship and New Media." The course design is based on socio-cultural theories of learning and considers the role of social capital in entrepreneurial networks. By integrating student teams into the communities of practice of local start-ups, we offer learning opportunities to students, companies, and academia. The student teams are connected to each other and to their supervisors in academia and practice through a community system. Moreover, the course is accompanied by a series of lectures and group discussions. So far, the course has been conducted three times at RWTH Aachen and the University of Siegen.

The role of modeling in computational science education

Modeling and simulation skills are two core competences of computational science and thus should be a central part of any curriculum. While there is a well-founded methodology for the design of simulation algorithms today the teaching of modeling skills carries some intrinsic problems. The reason is that modeling is still partly an art and partly a science. As an important consequence for university education, the concepts for teaching modeling must be quite different from those for teaching simulation algorithms. Experiences made with the courses on ‘Modeling and Simulation’ at the University of Siegen are summarized and some general concepts for the teaching of modeling skills are presented. In particular, three practical approaches to modeling education are discussed with several examples.

An airship robot for cooperative robot tasks

This paper describes the feasibility and conceptual design of a lighter than air craft to be used for educational and research purposes at the University of Siegen. This project allows a large number of students to work together on a multidisciplinary mechatronic design in the fields of control, communication, aerodynamics and structural techniques. Together with mobile robots the airship will be part of a multi robot team remotely controllable via internet.

Corneal impact of ultrasound and bevel position in phacoemulsification

Purpose To investigate the amplitude of ultrasound waves that reach the cornea with the phacoemulsification tip at different angles. Setting Institute for Applied Mechanics and Control Engineering, University of Siegen, Siegen, Germany. Methods A model eye was constructed with an ultrasound tip (angle 45 degrees) in the typical position during the procedure and a sensor mounted in the apex of the artificial cornea. The sensor measured the incoming ultrasound waves. Thirty bursts of ultrasound energy were set at 100% power with the bevel of the tip facing up toward the cornea, and 30 bursts were set with the bevel facing down toward the lens. Results There was no statistically significant difference in the measurements with the tips bevel up and bevel down. Conclusion There was no significant difference in the corneal load from ultrasound waves with the phacoemulsification tip in a bevel-up or bevel-down position.

Using Interactive Multimedia Tools to Teach Materials Characterization Techniques in the Undergraduate Curriculum

ABSTRACTThe paper describes an ongoing project at the University of Siegen to develop multimedia teaching/learning software for materials characterization techniques in an effort to improve the quality of teaching and learning and to increase interest in scientific and engineering subjects in younger students. We have developed a modular web-based teaching platform that uses multimedia tools to provide access to and information about state-of-the-art analytical techniques, visualize complex physical concepts, and use interactive and animated modules to improve student learning.

This volume contains elaborations of most of the talks presented at the Workshop on Domains IV held at Haus Humboldtstein, Remagen-Rolandseck, from October 2nd to October 4th, 1998.The workshop was aimed at computer scientists and mathematicians alike who share an active interest in the mathematical foundations of computer science. It focussed on domains, their applications, closely related topics such as axiomatic and synthetic domain theory, and connections to type theory, recursion theory and topology.The workshop was organized by Dieter Spreen, Ralf Greb, Holger Schulz (University of Siegen) and Michel Schellekens (National University of Ireland, Cork).Domains IV was the fourth in a series of workshops started 1994 in Darmstadt and continued 1996 in Braunschweig and 1997 in Munich. It was attended by forty young as well as established researchers from a growing number of countries in Europe and overseas, underlining the lively interest in this meeting series. Due to the excellent conditions provided by Haus Humboldtstein, a last century villa overlooking the beautiful Rhine valley, the workshop took place in an informal and relaxed atmosphere.But it is only through the common efforts of the participants and the speakers that this workshop became such a success. Thomas Ehrhard, Dag Normann and Giovanni Sambin agreed to give invited lectures.Some people who registered were not able to attend. Nevertheless, their contributions are included in the volume.The workshop would not have been possible in this form without the financial support by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, the Sparkasse Siegen, and the University of Siegen. Thanks are also due to the staff of Haus Humboldtstein. Experiments and modelling of coal pyrolysis under fluidized bed conditions

The pyrolysis behavior of two Chinese coals has been investigated in a laboratory-scale bubbling fluidized bed system in Siegen University, Germany. Experimental equipment and procedure are introduced. The amounts of pyrolysis species of each coal were measured, calculated and compared. A new method was presented to determine the needed parameters in FG-DVC model with the experimental results instead of other much more complicated experiments.
