The Development of an Interactive Industry/Academic Power Engineering Education Program at the University of Missouri-Rolla

This paper describes the development of a unique and innovative program in power engineering education enhanced through an Industry/Academic interrelationship. This program is devoted to both the teaching and the practice of power engineering. The development of the Industry/Academic relationship and its value as a model for power engineering education are related. A summary of present and proposed future activities concludes the report.

An Interactive Computer Graphics Language for the Design and Simulation of Digital Systems

Many computer hardware description languages have been introduced to describe and model digital networks at the register transfer level.1-3Most CHDL's, however, like common programming languages, are text oriented and employ textual statements in the specification of a digital system. The process of converting a word statement problem into a description written in a design language is often tedious, especially when the design is complex. Many designers overcome this difficulty by drawing register layouts and control sequence or state diagrams for a design before hand-translating them into a specification in an appropriate design language. With the reduction in the costs of on-line computing and graphic terminals, this approach can be used early in the computer-aided-design cycle. This has in fact been accomplished at the University of Missouri-Rolla, where a graphic language called FLOWWARE has been developed to allow digital networks to be specified pictorially.

Development of Helicopter Flight Path Models

This work was sponsored in part by the National Science Foundation by the U.S. Army Armaments Command, and by the University of Missouri-Rolla. The objective of this paper is to present general techniques for simulating helicopter flight trajectory response. During flight the pilot manipulates the controls either to trim the helicopter for steady flight by balancing the external forces and moments or to produce a desired maneuver by controlling the unbalance of these forces and moments. Discussions of the physical phenomena involved with the aerodynamics of the rotors and fuselage are given in [11 through [3]. Computer manpower in the United States - supply and demand

At a time when new departments of computer science, data processing, information science, information systems, etc. are being created and existing departments are trying to grow and compete with more established disciplines for scarce resources, it seems imperative that we attempt to keep abreast of the needs of industry and government for the graduates of these programs. This need must be monitored and matched against the production of graduates at all appropriate levels. The author has assembled extensive data on the latter over the past eight years while at the Southern Regional Education Board in Atlanta, GA (USA) during the period 1965--72 and currently at the University of Missouri-Rolla. The data was collected and published with support from the National Science Foundation. In this paper the author also develops estimates of computer manpower need and compares these estimates of need with estimates on production. These comparisons are presented on a State-by-State basis as well as National.

A computer-automated laboratory system in a university environment

A computer-automated laboratory system at the University of Missouri-Rolla, Rolla, which serves a wide variety of instruction and research disciplines including Geophysics, Cloud Physics, and Computer Graphics, is described. The system serves as an example for campuses which are relatively small in geographic area and with budget limitations which dictate a step-by-step evolution. The paper describes 1) the constraints and economics realized in the development of the system, 2) the characteristics of the minicomputer network, and 3) an evaluation of the system philosophy and performance. Also included is a description of diverse laboratory projects supported by the computer-automated system.

Specialized Study Skills, Developmental-Reading Instruction and Counseling

Ninety beginning freshmen at the University of Missouri-Rolla were utilized as subjects. The sample was sub-divided into three equal groups; the experimental group was composed of pre-registered students enrolled in an intensified instructional program in Study Skills and Developmental Reading and were provided specialized counseling services; one control group was composed of students that had taken part in the pre-registration program at UMR, but were not enrolled in the Study Skills and Developmental Reading instruction and were not provided specialized counseling services; and the other control group was accorded no variation in traditional method of enrollment or instruction. All three groups were matched on their obtained School and College Ability Test scores, English and Mathematics Placement Test scores, college majors and semester hours attempted. All students in these groups were above average in quantitative skills and below average in verbal skills.The experimental group met for developmental reading and study skills instruction on a bi-weekly basis for no academic credit. The study skills instruction included material dealing specifically with both study habits and study attitudes. The developmental reading sequence consisted of both machine and workbook instruction. The counseling service was provided on a voluntary basis and was initiated at the time of pre-registration. A statistically significant difference in grade point average (GPA) was discerned after the first semester of the project. While no significant differences in GPA existed after the second and third semesters of the investigation, the attrition rate was considerably lower for the experimental group than for the control groups. Highly significant gains were evidenced in reading rates with no significant loss in reading comprehension.
