Artificial Intelligence in Education: A Bibliometric Study

The aim of this study is to examine the studies in the literature on the use of artificial intelligence in education in terms of its bibliometric properties. The Web of Science (WoS) database was used to collect the data. Various keywords were used to search the literature, and a total of 2,686 publications on the subject published between 2001-2021 were found. The inquiry revealed that most of the studies were carried out in the USA. According to the results, it was seen that the most frequently published journals were Computers Education and International Journal of Emerging Technologies in Learning. The study showed that the institutions of the authors were in the first place as Carnegie Mellon University, University of Memphis and Arizona State University as the most productive organizations due to the number of their publications, while Vanlehn, K. and Chen, C. –M. were the most effective and productive researchers. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that the co-authorship network structure was predominantly USA, Taiwan and United Kingdom. In addition, when the keywords mentioned together were mapped, it was seen that the words artificial intelligence, intelligent tutoring systems, machine learning, deep learning and higher education were used more frequently.

Grit, Grind, and Praxis: The Memphis Model of Applying Anthropology

AbstractIn this paper we define “The Memphis Model,” or the type of praxis‐oriented, critically engaged anthropology developed and used by the Department of Anthropology at the University of Memphis. This model draws inspiration from the Grit and Grind ethos of the city of Memphis, along with its deep cultural and political traditions of grassroots activism for social justice. Here, we define how this is done in practice. The Department of Anthropology continually brings together current students, faculty, alumni, and community partners in coalition to develop approaches to address emerging social justice issues throughout the city, country, and world. This paper draws on one specific example, the Welcome Home Memphis Initiative, a long‐term partnership with community housing agencies, alumni, faculty, and students to counter exploitative housing practices, to explain the process of the Memphis Model.

An Interview with Kris Sealey on Creolizing the Nation

AbstractMichael Monahan, Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Memphis, speaks with Kris Sealy about her recent book, Creolizing the Nation (Northwestern University Press, 2020). Drawing on Caribbean, decolonial, and Latina feminist resources, Creolizing the Nation identifies the nation‐form as a powerful resource for political struggles against colonialism, racism, and other manifestations of Western hegemony in the Global South even as it acknowledges the homogenizing effects of the politics of nationalism. Sealey argues that creolization provides a rich theoretical ground for rethinking the nation and deploying its political and cultural apparatus to imagine more just, humane communities.

Spectral analysis of english fricatives /s/ and /ʃ/ produced by people with profound hearing loss

Purpose Hearing loss not only causes restricted speech understanding, but also alters speech production resulting in poor intelligibility. This study investigated whether English fricatives /s/ and /ʃ/ spoken by people with severe-to-profound hearing loss acoustically differ from those spoken by normal hearing (NH) individuals. Methods For hearing impaired (HI) group, we analyzed a part of deaf speech corpus collected at the Speech Perception Assessment Lab (SPAL) at the University of Memphis. From the big dataset, /aSa/ and /aSha/ recordings spoken by eight females were selected. For NH control group, Shannon’s consonant set (1999) spoken by eight females was used. A set of spectral moment analysis (Mean, Variance, Skewness, Kurtosis) along with spectral peak (SP) and wiener entropy (WE) were used as measures of spectral properties of /s/ and /ʃ/. Results Variance and WE for HI were significantly higher than those for NH group (p<0.05). Mean and SP for /s/ were significantly greater in NH group, while Mean and SP for /ʃ/ were significantly greater in HI group (p<0.05). This trends suggest greater Mean and SP differences between /s/ and /ʃ/ for NH group than HI group. Conclusions Based on our finding, Variance and WE are spectral measures that are different between NH and HI individuals’ spoken /s/ and /ʃ/. We assume that HI individuals likely pronounce /s/ and /ʃ/ without making clear distinction substituting by each other due probably to lack of auditory feedback or failure of motor control. Collaboration to serve military-affiliated students: A textbooks reserves project at the University of Memphis

Military-affiliated students are a diverse campus constituency and may encounter a number of obstacles to their academic success. At the University of Memphis (UM), the Veteran and Military Student Services (VMSS) center provides a wide-ranging suite of services to engage and support military-affiliated students. This article describes how two UM departments, the University Libraries and VMSS, collaborated to facilitate the discovery and circulation of an existing collection of textbooks for military-affiliated students.

Effect of Hot Water Extracts of Maqui Berry on Human Aortic Endothelial Cells Exposed to a Hyperglycemic Environment

Abstract Objectives Impaired endothelial function is associated with many chronic vascular-related diseases including cardiovascular disease, inflammation, and diabetes. The antioxidant-rich Maqui berry (Aristotelia chilensis) has received increasing attention due to a variety of bioactivities including reduction of inflammation, control of blood glucose, and improvement of heart health, e.g., aortic endothelium, but corroborative research is needed. In the present study, we investigated the effects of aqueous Maqui berry extract (MBE) on nitric oxide (NO) production and oxidative stress (ROS) generation in human aortic endothelial cells (HAEC) alone or in a hyperglycemic environment with or without insulin. Methods Sterile (0.22 um filtered) MBE was added to endothelial basal medium (5% v/v) alone or containing glucose (final concentration 600 mg/dL; 33.3 mM) and/or insulin (final concentration 100 nM) followed by addition to monolayers and incubation for 24 hours. Monolayers were then assayed for NO production via the Greiss reaction, ROS via the use of DCFH-DA, and viability using MTT. Results We show that MBE may have increased ROS levels by 1.8-fold (P &amp;lt; 0.05) compared to control cultures using the DCFH-DA assay but decreased by ∼13% in the presence of glucose with or without insulin. MBE also increased NO levels by 3-fold (P &amp;lt; 0.05) compared to levels in control cultures. Glucose inclusion reduced NO by 15% and insulin reduced levels to that of control with or without glucose present. Viability, determined by MTT reduction, was not different between any of the groups. Conclusions The results suggest that water-soluble components of MB may modulate NO production in a hyperglycemic and/or hyperinsulinemic microenvironment and potentially improve endothelial function, in part, via the potential vasorelaxation properties of NO. Early and Often: The Need for Comprehensive Discussion of Treatment-Induced Cancer Late Effects.

Imagine your worst fear realized as an oncologist confirms that your child has cancer. During the initial clinic visit, you will be informed of your child’s diagnosis and his or her prognosis1 contingent on the best available treatment protocol, usually based on years of comprehensive clinical research. In the uncommon case that no best-practice protocol is available for your child, treatment options will be presented for you to help choose a course of action. Ideally, that discussion will include the pros and cons of each choice, including prognostic estimates, acute toxicities, and potential long-term effects on your child’s health and psychosocial well-being as they may evolve over the life course. From knowledge gained through clinical research and observational follow-up studies of cancer cohorts,2 the unambiguous association between therapeutic exposures and specific acute and long-term effects in childhood cancer has led to a focus in treatment protocols on maintaining high survival probability while minimizing serious late effects and optimizing quality of life. By Aram Goudsouzian. (Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2019. Pp. xvi, 220. $25.00, ISBN 978-1-4696-5109-5.) In The Men and the Moment: The Election of 1968 and the Rise of Partisan Politics in America, Aram Goudsouzian provides a detailed, authoritative, well-written, and often gripping account of the tumultuous election year of 1968. Goudsouzian, a professor of history at the University of Memphis, provides an account of the 1968 election structured by those who primarily shaped that election. Most of these men were presidential candidates (Robert F. Kennedy, Eugene J. McCarthy, and Hubert H. Humphrey for the Democrats; Nelson A. Rockefeller, Ronald Reagan, and Richard M. Nixon for the Republicans; and the American Independent Party candidate George C. Wallace). However, The Men and the Moment begins with an examination of the incumbent president and (as 1968 began) expected candidate, Lyndon B. Johnson, who on March 31, 1968, stunned the country by announcing his withdrawal from the presidential race. Goudsouzian organizes the book by personalities. The first eight of the book’s ten chapters paint a portrait of each leader, alternating between political parties. Chapter 9 focuses on the 1968 fall campaign, tracing Humphrey’s declining fortunes into late September and his comeback in October and early November and documenting the common wisdom that, had the election been held one week later than it was, Humphrey might have won. Chapter 10 considers the aftermath of the election, especially its role in ending the fifth party system—the era of Democratic Party national dominance since the 1930s. Goudsouzian’s writing style is energetic, accessible, and at times laced with verve and wit. For instance, Miami Beach, Florida, the host city for the 1968 National Republican Convention, is described as full of “gaudy replica architecture”; its nightclubs “glittered with fleshy delights”; and the city itself was “a bubble of indulgence . . . a sun-drenched oasis from the crises of race and crime and poverty and Vietnam” (p. 80). Goudsouzian describes the “violent energy” at Wallace’s rallies; the “cool dignity” of McCarthy, matching the “‘[n]o hippie style’” of his “‘Neat and Clean for Gene’” youthful supporters; and Humphrey’s status as “an icon of national malaise” during the summer of 1968 (pp. 117, 36, 95). Initially, this reviewer was skeptical of Goudsouzian’s organizing the book around the year’s major political personalities. After reading The Men and the Moment, however, this organization was successful. The drawback of this approach is that the book tends to jump forward and backward chronologically. Outweighing this, however, is the intense focus on each political leader and the exhaustive documentation, which is contained in sixty-one pages of endnotes. Also helpful is the 1968 election timeline in the appendix, chronicling events from January 2, when Wallace succeeded in getting his name on the California ballot, to November 6, when Nixon was confirmed as the election winner and president-elect. Overall, The Men and the Moment is an excellent read. I highly recommend it to both academic audiences, especially in American history and politics, and general readers. Two minor shortcomings stand out. First, notwithstanding the engaging writing and rapt attention to detail, it is not immediately clear what [End Page 535] Goudsouzian was setting out to add to existing accounts of the 1968 election. I did not see any mention of where previous studies have fallen short or left questions unanswered. The Men and the Moment seems not well grounded in past works, such as Theodore H. White’s The Making of the President: 1968 (New York, 1969). Second, the coverage of the aftermath of the 1968 election struck this reviewer as extremely brief and cursory. The book’s title ends with “and the Rise of Partisan Politics in America,” but it seems there is little to no discussion of the ramifications of 1968 for rising partisan polarization in the years since. This paper presents the results of focus groups conducted with student-parents at the University of Memphis. The objective of this study was to explore the research services and library spaces student-parents need to thrive in higher education settings. The results identify several ways in which academic librarians can support student-parents’ research needs and contribute directly to their academic success.

Sophia Rose Arjana's Veiled Superheroes: Islam, Feminism, and Popular Culture offers a creative analysis of the understudied topic of Muslimah superheroes in comics and animations. Her work is organized into five chapters, with the first two chapters providing a historical overview of the representation of Muslim women in Western media, and subsequent chapters focusing on specific character case studies. The conference events included tutorials, invited speakers, special tracks, and presentations of papers, posters, and awards. The conference chair was Vasile Rus from the University of Memphis.
