326 – Survey of ADHD prevalence among college students reside in hostel of ardabil medical university

(ADHD) is a heredity and psychological disorder that often continues to adulthood and causes great number of emotional, social, educationaland occupational problem for college students. Objectives We think there is a meaningful relation between ADHD and people's jobs and conditions. Aims The aim of this study isdetermine the prevalence of ADHD among students reside in hostel ofArdabil University of Medical Sciences. Methods In this cross sectional study selected all studentsin hostel of Ardabil University of Medical Sciences and all of them fill theSelf reporting Conners ADHD questionnaires and the data wereextracted and analyzed with SPSS. Results During this study the prevalence of ADHD is 8.6 percent, and themale gender shows more involvement rate than female and the involvedStudents show more incidences of smoking and psychotropic drugconsumption. Conclusions According to the high prevalence of ADHD among collegeStudents, diagnosis and treatment of ADHD as soon as possible appearsis necessary.

Comparison of nutritional status of university students of two Asian countries

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to compare energy and macro‐nutrients intake in university hostel students in two countries of Asia.Design/methodology/approachFemale students from the hostels of International Islamic University, Malaysia (IIUM), Kuantan Campus and NWFP, Agricultural University Peshawar, Pakistan were assessed for energy and macro‐nutrients intake. A total of 140 students were registered who volunteered to participate in this study. The age range of the registered students was 22‐26 years. On the day of the registration, age, height and weight were recorded; also, food frequency questionnaires (FFQs) were provided. The participants were asked to record alternately for three days whatever they ate during the prescribed week. Out of 140 students 139 returned the FFQs. From the anthropometry, the BMI was used to assess the under, ideal, over‐weight and obese students. From the FFQs, energy and nutrient intakes were calculated using the food composition tables for Malaysia and Pakistan and compared with the recommended nutrients intakes (RNIs).FindingsThe body weight for the required height among the Malaysian students was lower by 7.81 per cent than the reference value, whereas the body weight of Pakistani students matched to the reference weight for height. The Malaysian students were 28.0, 61.0, 5.5 and 0.9 per cent under, ideal, over‐weight and obese, respectively, whereas Pakistani students were 100 per cent in the category of ideal‐body weight. The total energy consumption was higher among Malaysian students by 9.93 per cent compared to the reference requirements, whereas the Pakistani students claimed to meet the requirements. In terms of nutrients balancing the Malaysian students were having the ideal combination of the macro‐nutrients and it was within the recommended range of 55‐60, 15‐20 and 25‐30 per cent for carbohydrates, protein and fat, respectively; whereas the balancing of the macro‐nutrients was poor among the Pakistani students and met the energy requirements at the expense of fat consumption.Originality/valueThe paper suggests that there is imbalance in macro‐nutrients intake among the students.

Energy Efficient Operation of University Hostel Buildings Under Indoor Environmental Quality Requirements

This paper investigates the influence of Indoor Environmental Quality [IEQ] requirements associated with occupation regimes on the criterion of energy demands for Heating, Ventilating and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) central systems installed in Cairo, Egypt. This paper focuses on the effects of occupation rate profiles with IEQ thermal parameters such as air dry-bulb temperatures and local air velocities. It is applied as a case study “10-Stories Hostel of 6000 m2 built-up area” that is utilized by immigrant students that migrate to Cairo for their University studies. They are termed here in this work as Egyptian Citizens [EC]. The occupation rate schedules and operation profiles for each source of heat inside space shall be incorporated to simulate the reality. These profiles and schedules should be added to the local energy code as a guideline for designers. Although in this case study the obtained results from simulation program match the total actual energy bills, sometimes, with multi-use apartments additional factors. The effect of Effective Temperatures [ET*] (temperature for constant thermal sensations) is vital as it can lead to reduce the cooling capacity by increasing the room temperature against indoor relative humidity for the same comfort sensation. These two concepts will save on the project total energy demand, in addition to introducing new design criteria for acceptable indoor conditions.

<i>Entamoeba</i> histolytica infection among students living in Nnamdi Azikiwe University Hostels, Awka, south-eastern Nigeria

A cross sectional survey was carried out to determine the prevalence of E. histolytica among students living in three hostels of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, between January- April 2007. Fresh feaces were collected and examined from a total of 460 students. Direct smear technique was used for identification of the trophoziote or cysts in stool samples. Out of the total of 460 stool samples examined, 118 (25.7%) were infected with E. histolytica. Mgbajaka Hostel recorded a prevalence of 17.3% while the prevalence of 36 and 23.7% came from Lan Hostel and University Hostel respectively. Infection was higher in females (26.9%) than in males (24.2%). However difference in infection between sexes was not significant (÷2 cal = 0.48, ÷2 tab = 3.84, df = 1, p< 0.05). The soft stool samples had more parasites (58.8%) than the formed stool (19.9%) and this was significant (÷2 cal = 45.66, ÷2 tab = 3.84, df = 1, p< 0.05). Most students patronize road side food vendors with doubtful amoebiasis condition. The study shows that E. histolytica could be found in human communities like university hostels. Management of the refectories by university authorities as was done in the seventies and eighties is recommended among others.Keywords: Entamoeba histolytica, trophozoite, students, prevelence, omoebiasis, refectories.

Screening of proteinuria in young adults: Is it worthwhile?

AbstractBACKGROUNDThe prevalence of chronic kidney disease is increasing rapidly worldwide, and recent data indicate that overt disease is the tip of the iceberg of covert disease. Data on the prevalence and incidence of proteinuria in young adults are scarce. This lack of knowledge is an obstacle to the establishment of prevention programs for chronic kidney disease, especially in developing countries.SETTING AND PARTICIPANTSUrine screening for proteinuria was carried out in a cohort of young adults in a student hostel of Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt. Fresh morning urine samples were collected and tested for proteinuria by dipstick analysis. Participants with persistent proteinuria were referred to the university hospital for further evaluation for the presence of kidney disease.RESULTSOf 1,260 apparent healthy students screened, 67.7% were males and 32.3% were females. Their mean age was 20.2 ± 1.2 years. 3.3% were hypertensive, and proteinuria was detected in 47 (3.7%) in the first screening test. At the second screening test, persistent proteinuria was found in 10 students (0.8% of the original cohort). Of these, 4 (0.3%) had proteinuria more than 0.5 g/24 h, but all of them refused renal biopsy.CONCLUSIONSUrine dipstick is an inexpensive way to screen for proteinuria in developing countries, but it must be done twice to exclude transient and intermittent proteinuria. Routine screening for proteinuria in this particular young adult population is not recommended due to its low diagnostic yield.

The Factors Predicting Students’ Satisfaction with University Hostels, Case Study, Universiti Sains Malaysia

This study was administrated to undergraduate students living in the various hostels of Universiti Sains Malaysia. The primary purpose of this study was to identify the most important factors that predict undergraduate students’ level of satisfaction with the student hostels they are living in. This paper also explored the difference in the satisfaction levels of students living in hostels within the campus and those living in hostels outside the campus. Based on literature review, it was hypothesized that there would be a difference in the satisfaction level between these two groups of hostel residents due to the different characteristics that these hostels have. Additionally, this study investigated the most preferred hostels among students and identified the reasons for the preference. A sample population of 288 students (220 females; and 68 males) was involved in this study with 48.3% living in hostels inside the campus and 51.7% living in hostels located outside the main campus area. The result of the study suggests that satisfaction with fees, distance from university facilities, room safety, room size, hostel security, and hostel facilities are the most important factors which predict undergraduate students’ satisfaction with their hostel. There was also a significant difference in the satisfaction level between inside-campus and outside-campus hostels students. The most important factors that influenced that students satisfaction levels were distance from the university facilities, the exterior condition of the hostel, hostel population, satisfaction with transport, hostel security, room size, and room safety. The study also found that the most preferred hostel among the students was Cahaya Gemilang due to its strategic location, close distance to lecture halls and other main facilities in the campus and, good internet network connection. Undergraduate Students’ Satisfaction with Hostel and Sense of Attachment to Place: Case Study of University Sains Malaysia

Problem statement: Unlike numerous studies have explored residents’ satisfaction and sense of attachment to housing, little discussion exists on this area addressing the relationship between sense of attachment to place and student housing satisfaction. To fill such a gap, this article was an attempt to investigate undergraduate students’ level of satisfaction and sense of attachment to place drawn from three ethnics (Malay, Chinese and Indian) living in the hostels of University Sains Malaysia to see if there is a significant relationship between the level of satisfaction and sense of attachment to hostel and whether Chinese, Indians and Malay students differ from one another significantly in their satisfaction with hostel and sense of attachment to place. Approach: A 33 item questionnaire measuring satisfaction of students with (hostel fees, sharing the room, hostel distance from facilities provided on University campus and hostel distance from school’, hostel design and layout, hostel population, hostel rules and regulations, hostel safety and hostel security and so forth) and sense of attachment to place was used in this research. A sample of 267 (168 Malay, 76 Chinese and 23 Indians) students were randomly selected from seven hostels of University Sains Malaysia. Results: The findings of the study showed a significant positive correlation between level of satisfaction and sense of attachment to place (r = 0.529; p<0.01, n = 267). An insignificant difference was found between three ethnics (Malay, Chinese and Indian) on the level of satisfaction with hostel and sense of attachment to place. Conclusion: It was concluded that (1) higher sense of attachment is associated with an increase in level of satisfaction. (2) Satisfaction and attachment to hostel are not affected by the student’s ethnicity.

Urinary Tract Infections Among Female Students Of The University Of Agriculture, Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria

Samples of urine and High Vagina Swabs (HVS) were collected from 213 volunteer female students in the female hostel of University of Agriculture, Makurdi, and examined for pathogenic organisms. Of these samples, 204 (95.77%) had at least one infection. The organisms isolated include Staphylococcus aureus which had the highest prevalence of 120(56.34%) in urine and 108(50.70%) in HVS samples; Escherichia coli was next with 60 (28.17%) in urine, others were Streptococcus pyogenes in 18(8.45%) urine and 39 (18.31%) HVS samples. Trichomonas vaginalis was identified only in 12 (5.63%) HVS samples. The age group 20 – 24 years had the highest prevalence. Mixed infections were also observed. The implications of these findings were discussed.

Field Measurement and Subjects' Votes Assessment on Thermal Comfort in High-rise Hostels in Malaysia

The need to design for low energy consumption dwellings has induced Malaysian architects to design naturally ventilated high-rise hostels (HH), near the capital, Kuala Lumpur. Objective and subjective measurements for thermal comfort investigations were conducted in two high-rise university hostels located in Universiti Malaya, Petaling Jaya (HH1) and Universiti Putra Malaysia, Serdang (HH2) from May 12 to June 19 in 2007. Eighteen rooms located at first, fifth, and top floor of each HH were measured for different orientations. The measured rooms were naturally ventilated with ceiling fans. Thermal comfort variables were measured prior to the subjective measurement. A total of 208 student occupants responded to the questionnaire. Subjects with 6 months and over living experience in those HH were selected randomly. This study was aimed: (1) to assess the indoor microclimate of each naturally ventilated HH, (2) to identify student occupants' thermal sensation during rainy and clear day, and (3) to simulate the neutral operating temperature for rooms in naturally ventilated high-rise hostels. Findings revealed that room in HH1 which is located on high land and shaded has a more constant operating temperature distribution than rooms in HH2 that is located on lower land and un-shaded. Operating temperature ranges for HH1 and HH2 were 27—31°C and 26—41°C, respectively. Results suggested that there is also a possibility that thermal comfort is achievable in shaded naturally ventilated hostels with a window-to-wall ratio of 0.35 where the internal—external relative humidity is above 70% RH, especially in south-facing rooms.

Aim: The objective of this study was to provide information on the level of utilization and satisfaction of residential university students with the dental services provided by the dental clinic of a teaching hospital. Volunteers and Material: A stratified sampling technique was used to recruit volunteers from the outpatient clinic of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Information was collected by a self-administered questionnaire composed of questions that measure the level of utilization and satisfaction with the dental services provided. Questionnaires were provided to 650 randomly chosen students residing in the University hostels. There were 39 refusals, and 6 incomplete questionnaires were discarded. This left a sample size of 605 volunteers. Results: Forty seven students (7.8%) indicated that they visited the dental hospital within the last 12 months. Males and females utilized the dental services equally, and utilization increased with age and the number of years spent on campus. Anticipation of painful dental treatment, high dental charges, long waiting times and being too busy for a dental visit were cited as the most important impediments to seeking dental treatment. Females expressed greater satisfaction with the services. Conclusion: Dental service utilization among the students was found to be low. Oral health awareness campaigns, improving the quality of the services, and shortening the waiting time are expected to increase service utilization and satisfaction.

Cambridge composition

The nature of architectural design in the early twenty-first century is considered through a comparison between the author's recent design for a university hostel and earlier examples of the genre.This project was designed by a Lecturer in Architecture at Cambridge for one of its Colleges. It is occupied by undergraduates, some of them architecture students, and during its construction it was used as a teaching case study. The design is somewhat ‘didactic’ in nature, attempting to be quite explicit in its thematic and formal procedures; stylistically, it can be seen as an examination of the possibilities inherent in a late modernist tradition. For this reason, and because of its privileged site and budget, it offers an opportunity for some reflections on architectural composition at the beginning of the twenty-first century, in relation to earlier traditions of formal manipulation.

Foodborne Disease in Students' Hostel Due to Improper Tin Coating

ABSTRACT A foodbome disease characterized by nausea, abdominal pain and vomiting in University Hostel students was investigated. Epidemiological and laboratory investigations indicated that the disease was associated with the consumption of rice and soup contaminated with lead and copper. Lead was detected in rice (119.65 ppm), soup (42.6 ppm), vegetable curry (42.9) and vomitus (120.6 ppm) while copper was detected in soup (47.0 ppm) and vomitus (40.2 ppm). Metal entry into the food was due to improper tin coating of the copper vessels used for cooking.

A Hostel for this University City has been built in accordance with the following program of requirements: 400 rooms for students, in two separate blocks, together with a sanitary building with 20 rooms; a self-service restaurant, with capacity for 500 people sitting down, and a total capacity for 1500 eating simultaneously; kitchen and auxiliary services; a gymnasium with 800 sq. m. floor area; and general dressing and washing facilities for males and females. In addition to the above, there are a number of complementary dependencies, such as a club, games room, reading and lecture halls, infirmary, offices, five apartments, doorman's quarters, etc. The general arrangement of the buildings, and the audacious and balanced interplay of volumes makes this university hostel an imposing and serenely beautiful project.

Herbert Westren Turnbull, 1885-1961

Herbert Westren Turnbull, second son and second of the seven children of William Peveril Turnbull, H.M. Inspector of Schools at Wolverhampton and later at Sheffield, was born at Tettenhall, Wolverhampton, on 31 August 1885. His death at Grasmere on 4 May 1961 was felt as a personal loss not merely by mathematicians in Scotland, with which country he had had associations for forty years, but by a multitude of friends, mathematicians and others, in America and in many other foreign countries. Educated at Sheffield Grammar School, he went up in 1903 to Trinity College, Cambridge, with an Entrance Scholarship. In the Tripos of 1907 he was Second Wrangler, in 1908 he was in Division 1 of the First Class in Part 2, in 1909 he was a Smith’s Prizeman. These distinctions followed in the line of a remarkable family tradition; for his father, four of whose sons went to Cambridge, had likewise before him been Second Wrangler and a Smith’s Prizeman, being also later a Fellow of Trinity; an uncle had been Third Wrangler; a cousin, R. W. H. T. Hudson, was Senior Wrangler, while three lady cousins, one of whom was Dr Hilda P. Hudson, author of Cremona transformations in plane and space , gained First Class in Mathematics at Cambridge and Oxford, and yet another cousin was Tutor in Mechanical Science at Trinity Hall. It would indeed have been remarkable if Herbert Turnbull had not become a mathematician. He was a lecturer at St Catherine’s College in 1909 and at the University of Liverpool in 1910. In July 1911 he married Ella Drummond, daughter of Canon H. D. Williamson, and went with her to Hongkong, to become a lecturer at Hongkong University in 1912, Master at St Stephen’s College from 1911 to 1915, and Warden of the University Hostel from 1913 to 1915.

Annual Meeting of the Science Masters' Association

THE twenty-fifth annual meeting of the Science Masters' Association was held on January 5, 6, and 7 at the University of Leeds, at the kind invitation of the University authorities. Members were housed at the University Hostels, an act of hospitality which was very much appreciated. The fact that the meeting was held at Leeds gave those members residing in Scotland and the North of England an excellent opportunity of attending, and the number present was very large. The meeting began with a dinner in the Refectory, at which the Association was entertained by the University. Afterwards there was a reception in the Great Hall by the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. J. B. Baillie, and the President of the Association, Sir Berkeley Moynihan, Bart., professor of clinical surgery in the University.
