Evolving Trends in Haryana's Food Processing Sector: Growth, Structure, and Linkages

The present piece of study tries to highlight the status and structure of the food manufacturing industry of the state Haryana. The status of the industry has been analyzed in terms of its structure, growth and contribution in the total manufacturing sector of Haryana. The study utilizes ASI data (2008-22) and NIC classification to evaluate sub-sector performance. The food manufacturing sector is dominated by the grain milling industry followed by manufacturing of other food products units including bakery products, confectionary, prepared foods and many more. Fruit and Vegetables processing units, prepared animal feed manufacturing units and meat processing units remains few, limiting their contribution in the sector. Moreover, the industry has shown a very inconsistent growth trend when compared to the manufacturing sector. Higher working capital intensity of the industry in comparison to raw material intensity indicates creation of more forward linkages by the sector in terms of technological advancements and have revealed comparatively lesser backward linkages.

Trends in blood transfusion and causes of blood wastage: a retrospective analysis in a teaching hospital

BackgroundBlood is a vital medical resource that is sourced from primarily nonremunerated donations. As Taiwan faces an aging population, increasing medical demands pose new challenges to blood resource management. Trend analysis can improve blood supply chain management and allocate blood resources more efficiently and cost-effectively.MethodsA retrospective review was conducted from 2011–2023 in a teaching hospital to examine the utilization and wastage of blood products. Data were collected from hospital information system and blood wastage reports, categorized by cause, and analyzed via SAS software version 9.3.ResultsThe hospital released 424,197 units of blood products, with leukocyte-reduced red blood cells accounting for 140,971 units. The highest annual wastage rate was 0.29% in 2011, and the annual average was 0.08%. Fresh frozen plasma (36.3%), platelet concentrates (15.2%), and cryoprecipitate (14.3%) were the most frequently discarded. Major causes of wastage included excessive or inappropriate orders (22.3%), inability to reissue blood before expiration (16.7%), and incorrect orders (14.6%). Platelet wastage was caused primarily by improper storage, while thawed plasma could not be repurposed. Utilization of leukocyte-reduced blood products has increased, leading to a significant reduction in transfusion reactions from 1.8% in 2011 to 0.6% in 2023.ConclusionsThe study highlights that blood wastage often stems from human error or improper storage conditions. The leading cause of platelet product disposal is incorrect storage temperatures, along with the inability to repurpose thawed plasma for plasma products. Importantly, the increased adoption of prestorage leukocyte-reduced blood products has significantly mitigated transfusion-related reactions. We emphasize that continuous education for healthcare professionals and enhanced inventory monitoring are critical to minimize wastage and enhance transfusion quality.

The Index of Cannabis Equivalence (ICE): A User-Centered Approach to Standardization of Cannabis Dose–Response

ABSTRACT The increasing acceptance of cannabis use, and policy changes in several jurisdictions has led researchers and public health experts to call for a standard cannabis dose. Standard dosing units are useful tools for regulation, substance use guidelines, data collection, consistency of research, as a means of communicating low-risk recommendations and dose-related effects, and for self-monitoring. Efforts to standardize cannabis dose have focused on cannabinoid content without considering tolerance or mode. Cannabis users with diverse motivations for use and varying experience rated low, medium, and high doses across seven modes of use. The participants (N = 1368; 42% female) were 18–93 years of age (M = 31.64, SD = 14.70) who had a cannabis use history. The Index of Cannabis Equivalence (ICE) identified the following low-dose cannabis equivalencies: two puffs on a joint, pipe, herbal or concentrate vaporizer is equivalent to one hit on a bong, a 5 mg/THC edible, and ¼ dab of a concentrate. These findings are based on responses from users with lower tolerance, which may limit generalizability to those with higher tolerance. The ICE proposes standardized cannabis doses through user-derived ratings across different administration routes. The meaningful standardization of units of cannabis products in a manner similar to what has been achieved for alcohol represents a valuable step in establishing standard doses across different modes of cannabis administration.

The carbon footprint and energy consumption of liver transplantation.

There is growing interest in the environmental impact of surgical procedures, yet more information is needed specifically regarding liver transplantation. This study aims to quantify the total greenhouse gas emissions, or carbon footprint, associated with adult whole-size liver transplantation from donors after brain death, including the relevant back-table graft preparation. The carbon footprint was calculated retrospectively using a bottom-up approach. This approach sums the volumes of energy consumption (kWh), volatile anesthetics (ml), solid waste (kg), and units of blood products transfused for each transplant. These consumption values were converted using validated conversion factors to the equivalent mass of carbon dioxide released into the environment (kg CO2e). A total of 147 patients with a mean age of 55 years (male, 78.9%) who underwent liver transplants between 2021 and 2022 were analyzed, resulting in 45.5 tons CO2e. The mean (SD) carbon footprint for each procedure was 309.8 (33.2) kg CO2e [95% CI: 304.4; 315.3]. Total energy power consumption was 96.5 MW, contributing 65.4% of greenhouse emissions (29.8 tons CO2e), while volatile anesthetics, solid waste, and blood product transfusions contributed 8.0% (3.64 tons CO2e), 5.9% (2.7 tons CO2e), and 20.6% (9.4 tons CO2e), respectively. The duration of surgery (t = 29.0; p < 0.001), transfused red blood cells (t = 13.1; p < 0.001), fresh frozen plasma (t = 11.1; p < 0.001), platelets (t = 8.9; p < 0.001), and the use of an extracorporeal pump machine (t = 3.6; p < 0.001) had the greatest effects on greenhouse gas emissions. Liver transplantation requires significant energy and is associated with considerable greenhouse gas emissions, particularly during longer procedures. Transplant clinicians, hospital administrators, policymakers, and patients should be aware of the environmental impact of liver transplantation and collaborate to adopt sustainable energy practices.

Severe maternal morbidity contributed by obstetric hemorrhage: Maryland, 2020-2022.

Obstetric hemorrhage is the leading cause of maternal mortality and severe maternal morbidity (SMM) in Maryland and nationally. Currently, through a quality collaborative, the state is implementing the Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (AIM) patient safety bundle on obstetric hemorrhage. To describe SMM events contributed by obstetric hemorrhage and their preventability in Maryland. This cross-sectional study used data from hospital-based SMM surveillance and review program in Maryland. Hospital-based SMM criteria include admission to an intensive care unit and/or transfusion of 4 or more units of blood products (of any type) during pregnancy or within 42 days postpartum. A total of 193 obstetric hemorrhage events that met the surveillance definition were identified in hospitals participating in SMM surveillance since inception on August 1, 2020 until December 31, 2022. We compared patient and delivery characteristics, practices done well, and recommendations for care improvement among patients with severe obstetric hemorrhage deemed preventable and non-preventable by hospital-based review committees. For obstetric hemorrhage events deemed preventable, we further identified factors that contributed to the SMM outcome at the provider, system, and patient levels. Uterine atony was the leading cause of obstetric hemorrhage events (37.8%), followed by uterine rupture, laceration and intra-abdominal bleeding (23.8%). Sixty-six (34.2%) obstetric hemorrhage events were preventable. Patients with preventable obstetric hemorrhage were significantly more likely to have an emergency than planned cesarean delivery and less likely to have a placental complication or >1500 mL blood loss volume. Hospital-based review committees determined that 81.8%, 30.3%, and 22.7% of preventable events could have been prevented or made less severe through changes to provider, system, or patient factors, respectively. Recommendations following event reviews aligned with the Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health Obstetric Hemorrhage Patient Safety Bundle, particularly regarding elements in the Recognition and Prevention and Response domains. About one-third of SMM events contributed by obstetric hemorrhages were deemed preventable. Of AIM bundle elements, assessing hemorrhage risk on admission to labor and delivery, peripartum, and upon transition to postpartum care together with rapid, unit-standardized management of hemorrhage are likely to benefit more than half of patients with preventable SMM contributed by obstetric hemorrhage.

Experimental Study of the Kinematics of a Double-Row Planetary Mechanism Using Two Elliptical External Gears

Introduction. Mechanisms with non-circular gears are of wide interest to researchers and inventors due to their compactness and the implementation of a wide range of transfer functions. The development of this area is stimulated by the advancements and reduction in cost of mechanical processing and additive manufacturing technologies, as well as the use of applied mathematical modeling packages for the analysis and synthesis of non-circular gears. Traditionally, noncircular gears are used to transmit rotational motion between parallel axes with a variable ratio of angular velocities. However, their use in planetary gear schemes provides implementing various types of output link motion. The analysis of the papers on the research area shows that gears with movable rotation axes have not been sufficiently studied from the point of view of kinematics and dynamics. Most research papers reveal the theory of such mechanisms without verifying the results obtained in practice. This work is aimed at the experimental verification of the kinematics of a planetary mechanism with two external engagements, which contains elliptical gears.Materials and Methods. The kinematic model of the mechanism under study is built on the basis of the velocity diagram of its links, which made it possible to obtain expressions for finding an analogue of the angular velocity and the position function of the output shaft. The experimental study of kinematics was performed on a laboratory stand containing a model of a planetary mechanism with a set of replaceable gear wheels, absolute encoders on the input and output shafts of the mechanism, a controller, and a PC for recording and processing the signal. The analysis of the obtained results was performed on a computer using statistical analysis methods.Results. As a result of kinematic analysis, position functions were constructed for three alternative planetary mechanisms, which had different geometric parameters of the gears and made it possible to implement various types of motion of the output shaft: swinging motion, discontinuous motion, and unilateral uneven rotation.Discussion and Conclusion. The analysis of the experimental results showed the adequacy of the constructed mathematical model of kinematics to real mechanisms. The confidence interval of measuring errors at a reliability level of 95% was 0.16±0.08° for the first version of the mechanism, 0.57±0.22° — for the second version, and 0.08±0.26° — for the third. The proposed planetary mechanism with elliptical gears for implementing various types of motion can be used in drives of process equipment in numerous industries: chemical and food (mixers), oil refining (pumping units for crude production), mechanical engineering (compressors, pumps, automated machines), and others. The conducted kinematic studies of the planetary mechanism and their experimental analysis are needed for further dynamic and force investigations, as well as for the design of drives based on the proposed transmission.

Variable costing method is a method of determining the cost of production that classifies costs based on cost behavior. The calculation of the cost of production is an important thing to note because of the increasing competition between companies in producing quality products at quite competitive prices. The purpose of this study was to analyze the calculation of the cost of production using the variable costing method for the selling price of Cigarette Clove Filters at PT. Gudang Garam. Based on the calculation of the cost of production using the company method, it is higher than the calculation using the variable costing method. The cost of production using the company method is IDR 100,704,757,320 and the calculation of the cost of production using the variable costing method is IDR 68,304,757,320. Determining the selling price of the method calculatiion of the cost of production using the company method is higher than the variable costing method of IDR 1,510.57/stick. While the calculation of the cost of production using the variable costing method, the unit selling price of the product is IDR 1,024.57/stick. The difference in the selling price of this product unit occurs because the calculation of the cost of production is also different.

Material Flow Cost Accounting with Multiple Inefficiency Factors and Recycling

AbstractSustainability management requires differentiated information on the environmental and economic consequences of material demand’s increasing and decreasing factors. Material flow cost accounting fails to provide this information due to the common undifferentiated determination of realized costs of material and product losses and, therefore, the lack of a production theoretical basis for cost planning. We develop a material flow model considering the impacts of waste and reject as material demand increasing factors and reworking and recycling as material demand decreasing factors at the company, quantity center, and product unit levels. This enables designing a material flow cost accounting system with specific cost information on the different factors at each level. We also analyze the consequences of the material distribution key and possible alternatives for allocating costs in material flow cost accounting. Finally, we discuss further development opportunities for this accounting system.

The risk of injuries and fatalities, environmental damage, and material loss during a fire at oil and petroleum product storage facilities is very high. Oil and petroleum product warehouses, including a complex of tanks, buildings, and other facilities, that are designed to receive, store, and offload oil and petroleum products can be part of various industrial, transporting, and energy enterprises and companies, etc. This category of production facilities includes: oil depots — enterprises on provision with petroleum products; tank farms and loading units of trunk oil pipelines and petroleum products; commodity and raw material parks of oil fields and oil-refining plants. Hot vapor discharges and oil and petroleum product spills in storage premises, pump stations, and areas for oil product storage can cause fires and explosions. The prompt fire alarm is critical to take immediate action for fire source localization, fire extinguishing, and evacuating personnel. Therefore, the engineering devices that ensure fire safety are the focus of constant attention, particularly fire detectors that register the signs of fire and can also ensure timely fire alarm activation. When choosing fire alarms, however, it is crucial to consider the entire set of their characteristics, including the probability of faultless operation during the longest period.

Facile fabrication of curved furniture by bamboo restructuring plasticizing for green furniture manufacturing

Eco-friendly bamboo curved components (BCCs) hold significant potential for use in furniture. However, the indiscriminate use of functionally graded bamboo and the cumbersome molding process severely limited the efficient production of the BCCs. Here, multi-layer BCCs were facilely fabricated using graded bamboo strips through integrated bamboo restructuring plasticizing technology. The properties of bamboo strips, curved bamboo strips (CBSs), and BCCs were systematically investigated to establish relationships among raw material attributes, product unit characteristics, and final product performance. The bamboo strips with vascular bundle gradient structure exhibited asymmetric bending behaviors under applied forces. Applying bending force to the side of bamboo strips with a low fiber volume fraction could result in a higher bending pass rate and bending stability. The intrinsically high toughness of bamboo strips was the performance basis to enable CBSs and BCCs to acquire a high yield. The 4-mm-thick bamboo strips with a high proportion of parenchyma tissues exhibited higher ductility and stress relaxation rates, thereby improving their bending stability. Multi-layer gluing reconstruction enabled large-thickness BCCs to possess higher bending stability than CBSs, with a bending recovery rate of 6–9 % under less harsh molding conditions. The bending and bonding strengths of the 12-mm-thick BCCs, which were fabricated from 2-mm-thick bamboo strips, were 96.31 MPa and 3.77 MPa, respectively. These values were much higher than the standard requirements for general-use plywood. The results provide the scientific basis for manufacturing bamboo curved furniture and pushing for green manufacturing in the furniture field.

Structuring experimentation: Implementing Growth Hacking in new ventures

Recent academic and managerial literature has paid significant attention to experimentation methods employed at different stages of a new venture’s lifecycle. Alongside the widely popularized Lean Startup method, Growth Hacking has emerged as an effective approach for supporting venture growth. While previous studies have examined experimentation from the process and individual perspectives, research on the integration of these methods within increasingly complex organizational structures remains limited. This article presents a comparative case study of two new ventures that adopted Growth Hacking while scaling. The findings reveal two approaches to the organizational implementation of Growth Hacking—either bridging or permeating experimentation throughout the organization—and explore their characteristics in terms of organizational configuration, the structure of marketing and product units, key roles, governance of experimentation, and associated benefits and shortcomings. These findings contribute to the literature on structuring experimentation and scaling in new ventures.

AbstractChiral 2‐azetines and allenes are highly valuable structural units in natural products and useful chemicals. However, enantioselective synthesis of both 2‐azetines and allenes has been extremely challenging. Herein, we present asymmetric construction of chiral 2‐azetines (70–98 % yields and up to 96 % ee) through chiral phosphine‐catalyzed [2+2] annulation of yne‐enones with sulfamate‐derived cyclic imines. These 2‐azetines were easily transformed into chiral allenes upon treatment with Et3SiH, BF3 ⋅ Et2O and water at rt for 2 minutes. Based on the above transformations, a concise one‐pot synthetic procedure combining [2+2] annulation of yne‐enones and sulfamate‐derived cyclic imines under phosphine catalysis and sequential reduction/isomerization/ring‐opening reaction through Et3SiH, BF3 ⋅ Et2O and water was thus set up, providing axially chiral tetrasubstituted allenes in satisfactory yields and enantioselectivities (56–90 % yields and up to 91 % ee).

Modular Synthesis of α-Quaternary Chiral β-Lactams via Three-Component Asymmetric Kinugasa/Aldol or Kinugasa/Mannich Cascade Reactions.

The β-lactam scaffolds are the prevalent structural units in antibiotics and natural products. Herein, three-component asymmetric Kinugasa/aldol and Kinugasa/Mannich cascade reactions have been developed for constructing α-quaternary chiral β-lactams. This method involved the tandem reaction of alkynes, nitrones and aldehydes (or imines), resulting in the formation of three sequential stereocenters controlled by copper(I) catalysts and chiral bis(oxazolidine) ligands. The developed protocol features high enantioselectivity, good reaction efficiency, and mild operational conditions, representing a practical and sustainable synthetic tool for the construction of functionalized chiral β-lactams.

Scalable probabilistic forecasting in retail with gradient boosted trees: A practitioner’s approach

The recent M5 competition has advanced the state-of-the-art in retail forecasting. However, there are important differences between the competition challenge and the challenges we face in a large e-commerce company. The datasets in our scenario are larger (hundreds of thousands of time series), and e-commerce can afford to have a larger stock assortment than brick-and-mortar retailers, leading to more intermittent data. To scale to larger dataset sizes with feasible computational effort, we investigate a two-layer hierarchy, namely the decision level with product unit sales and an aggregated level, e.g., through warehouse-product aggregation, reducing the number of series and degree of intermittency. We propose a top-down approach to forecasting at the aggregated level, and then disaggregate to obtain decision-level forecasts. Probabilistic forecasts are generated under distributional assumptions. The proposed scalable method is evaluated on both a large proprietary dataset, as well as the publicly available Corporación Favorita and M5 datasets. We are able to show the differences in characteristics of the e-commerce and brick-and-mortar retail datasets. Notably, our top-down forecasting framework enters the top 50 of the original M5 competition, even with models trained at a higher level under a much simpler setting.

A Thermodynamic Study of Pressure Gain Combustion in Combined Cycles

Abstract Gas turbines are internal combustion engines based on the Brayton-Joule cycle with four thermodynamic processes including air compression, constant pressure combustion, gas expansion and heat rejection. Actually, a relevant increase in entropy production is related to the constant pressure combustion, even in the ideal cycle, so alternative combustion solutions, such as the Pressure Gain Combustion (PGC), are worthy of attention. This work aims at investigating PGC potential in gas turbines compared to conventional power plants based on the Brayton-Joule cycle. Both simple cycle and combined cycle operations are considered, focusing on a F-class gas turbine unit for power production. Cycle performance is estimated through a thermodynamic in-house code, where the common calculation scheme has been revised in order to simulate a combustion process occurring with increasing pressure from inlet to outlet of the combustor. A booster compressor is necessarily included in the power system for delivering the cooling air to the first stage blades of the turbine. The results are fully satisfactory as PGC technology really improves the efficiency of the gas turbine expander: in case of a pressure gain of 45%, which is a reasonable value based on literature data, 1.3 to 3.4 percentage points more in gas turbine efficiency have been calculated. Finally, a parametric analysis of expansion efficiency penalties due to supersonic pulsating flows at the first stage of the turbine expander is presented.

Determination of Citrate Content of Commonly Transfused Blood Products

Abstract Background Citrate is a calcium-chelating anion used as an anticoagulant in the collection and manufacturing of blood products for transfusion. Overwhelming of normal hepatic catabolism of infused citrate, such as in liver failure or in massive transfusion, may cause citrate toxicity. Resultant hypocalcemia, impaired coagulation, and metabolic alkalosis results in increased patient mortality and morbidity. The citrate load per blood product unit is rarely known to the transfusionist, precluding precise calcium repletion. Manufacturing data of citrate content is available, but it is unreliable and often contradictory. The aim of this project is to directly measure the citrate concentrations of common blood products including packed red blood cells (pRBCs), plasma, and apheresis platelets. Methods Blood products (or samples thereof) were obtained, centrifuged, and assayed using a benchtop enzymatic citrate assay (Sigma-Aldrich). This technique generates a chromogenic product detectable via spectrophotometry at 570nm via conversion of citrate to a pyruvate intermediate. Blood products were serially diluted to the assay’s concentration measurement range based on estimations from the product manufacturing processes. Validation studies were performed to verify no significant interference from native pyruvate or from hemolysis at the dilutions used. All samples were run with a paired reference standard. Product type, storage duration, volume, and anticoagulant/preservative solution were recorded. Results Preliminary testing was performed on eleven pRBC units, twelve apheresis platelet units, and four whole blood(WB)-derived plasma. Measured citrate content of AS-1 and AS-5 units ranged from 43.56 - 114.5 mg while that of AS-3 units ranged from 327.23 – 816.82 mg, compared to manufacturing estimates of 188 mg and 883 mg, respectively. Measured citrate content of apheresis platelets ranged from 822-1533 mg compared to manufacturing estimates of 805 mg. Measured citrate content of WB-derived plasma also exceeded the manufacturing estimate of 1201 mg. Interference from pyruvate and hemolysis were insignificant at the dilutions used for testing. Validation of pRBC segment sampling is ongoing. Conclusion Varying guidelines exist for the correction of hypocalcemia during ongoing trauma resuscitation; however, guidance is limited regarding repletion by specific blood product. Our investigation affirms significant heterogeneity in pRBC citrate concentrations by collection method and identifies lower citrate concentrations than expected. This may be due to citrate metabolism by RBCs during storage. Platelet and FFP products contain significantly greater citrate masses by comparison, with a high degree of variation observed due to inherent product volume variability. Further sampling and testing are ongoing to establish reliable expected citrate loads for commonly transfused blood products.

Energy, exergy and exergoeconomic analyses and ANN-based three-objective optimization of a supercritical CO2 recompression Brayton cycle driven by a high-temperature geothermal reservoir

The use of CO2-based power cycles to harness high-temperature geothermal resources is an interesting application that has been little explored. Therefore, to obtain a more holistic understanding of these systems, in this work, a supercritical CO2 recompression Brayton cycle is assessed. For comparison, the performances of a recuperative cycle and a recompression cycle with intercooling were also computed. Detailed mathematical models were developed and then, artificial neural network-based surrogate models were adopted to conduct multi-objective optimization. Results of the baseline simulations show that, the high temperature recuperator and the turbine are the most important components from both exergy and exergoeconomic approaches. The optimizations reveal that the intercooled cycle is superior to the other layouts in all the cases while the recuperative cycle is not feasible with reinjection temperatures greater or equal to 150 °C. When the reinjection temperature is constrained to 150 °C, the intercooled cycle attains 4472.70 kW, 62.10 % and 14.42 $/GJ for net power, exergy efficiency and product unit cost, respectively, whereas without this constraint, it achieves 5394.09 kW, 61.83 %, 11.79 $/GJ. In conclusion, the adoption of advanced layouts of the CO2 cycle is beneficial for this application from both technical and economic points of view.

Design optimization and off-design performance analysis of one-dimensional supercritical CO2 Brayton cycle

Supercritical carbon dioxide (SCO2) recompression Brayton cycle (RBC) is an encouraging technology for thermal power conversion and heat harvest for a wide range of heat sources due to its high efficiency, low auxiliary power consumption, and compact size. However, most studies on its design and off-design performance analysis are limited to the simple zero-dimensional component models without considering aerothermodynamics and ambient conditions. In this study, we developed a set of fully one-dimensional components models for SCO2 compressors, turbines, and heat exchangers and, then, applied them to the multi-objective design optimization of a SCO2 cycle targeting a 50 MW net power output. The cycle off-design performance analysis methods and the control strategies were developed to countermeasure the performance degradation against varying cooling water temperatures and part loads. The multi-objective cycle design optimization demonstrates that the cycle thermal efficiency and total product unit cost can be 0.476 and 11.652$/GJ, respectively, for the 50 MW SCO2 RBC cycle. The choke margin of the main compressor is 0.136 less than that of the re-compressor, and condensation can lead to a sharp decline in efficiency under high-flow conditions, causing the earlier onset of choking. The off-design performance analysis shows that the turbine inlet pressure control improves cycle efficiency below the design point of 317 K but does otherwise above the point. In contrast, the inventory control strategies can maintain stable cycle efficiency and achieve adjustable net power output between 10 % and 110 %. The findings have the potential to advance further commercial application of SCO2 cycles in high-temperature thermal energy systems.
