New Approach to Synthesizing Cathode PtCo/C Catalysts for Low-Temperature Fuel Cells

The presented study is concerned with a new multi-step method to synthesize PtCo/C materials based on composite CoxOy/C that combines the advantages of different liquid-phase synthesis methods. Based on the results of studying the materials at each stage of synthesis with the TG, XRD, TEM, SEI, TXRF, CV and LSV methods, a detailed overview of the sequential changes in catalyst composition and structure at each stage of the synthesis is presented. The PtCo/C catalyst synthesized with the multi-step method is characterized by a uniform distribution of bimetallic nanoparticles of about 3 nm in size over the surface of the support, which result in its high ESA and ORR activity. The activity study for the synthesized PtCo/C catalyst in an MEA showed better current–voltage characteristics and a higher maximum specific power compared with an MEA based on a commercial Pt/C catalyst. Therefore, the results of the presented study demonstrate high prospects for the developed approach to the multi-step synthesis of PtM/C catalysts, which may enhance the characteristics of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs).

Study of the Synthesis of Multi-Cationic Sm-Co-O, Sm-Ni-O, Al-Co-O, Al-Ni-O, and Al-Co-Ni-O Aerogels and Their Catalytic Activity in the Dry Reforming of Methane.

Dense multi-cationic Sm-Co-O, Sm-Ni-O, Al-Co-O, Al-Ni-O, and Al-Ni-Co-O oxide aerogels were prepared by epoxide-driven sol-gel synthesis. Catalysts for dry reformation of methane, Sm2O3/Co, Sm2O3/Ni, Al2O3/Co, Al2O3/Ni, Al2O3/Co, and Ni were prepared by reduction of aerogels with hydrogen and their catalytic activities and C-deposition during dry reformation of methane were tested. Catalytic tests showed high methane conversion (93-98%) and C-deposition (0.01-4.35 mg C/gcat.h). The highest content of C-deposits after catalytic tests was determined for Al2O3/Co and Al2O3/Ni catalysts, which was related to the formation of Al alloys with Co and Ni. A uniform distribution of Co0 and Ni0 nanoparticles (in the form of a CoNi alloy) was found only for the Al2O3/Co and Ni catalysts, which showed the highest activity as well as low C deposition.

Infection-Free and Enhanced Wound Healing Potential of Alginate Gels Incorporating Silver and Tannylated Calcium Peroxide Nanoparticles.

The treatment of chronic wounds involves precise requirements and complex challenges, as the healing process cannot go beyond the inflammatory phase, therefore increasing the healing time and implying a higher risk of opportunistic infection. Following a better understanding of the healing process, oxygen supply has been validated as a therapeutic approach to improve and speed up wound healing. Moreover, the local implications of antimicrobial agents (such as silver-based nano-compounds) significantly support the normal healing process, by combating bacterial contamination and colonization. In this study, silver (S) and tannylated calcium peroxide (CaO2@TA) nanoparticles were obtained by adapted microfluidic and precipitation synthesis methods, respectively. After complementary physicochemical evaluation, both types of nanoparticles were loaded in (Alg) alginate-based gels that were further evaluated as possible dressings for wound healing. The obtained composites showed a porous structure and uniform distribution of nanoparticles through the polymeric matrix (evidenced by spectrophotometric analysis and electron microscopy studies), together with a good swelling capacity. The as-proposed gel dressings exhibited a constant and suitable concentration of released oxygen, as shown for up to eight hours (UV-Vis investigation). The biofilm modulation data indicated a synergistic antimicrobial effect between silver and tannylated calcium peroxide nanoparticles, with a prominent inhibitory action against the Gram-positive bacterial biofilm after 48 h. Beneficial effects in the human keratinocytes cultured in contact with the obtained materials were demonstrated by the performed tests, such as MTT, LDH, and NO.

Ti/Ta-based composite polysaccharide scaffolds for guided bone regeneration in total hip arthroplasty

Guided bone regeneration can play an important role in orthopedic applications. This work presents the synthesis and characterization of composite scaffolds based on polysaccharides loaded with microparticles of titanium or tantalum as novel materials proposed for composite systems with promising characteristics for guided bone regeneration. Ti/Ta composite scaffolds were synthesized using chitosan and gellan gum as organic substrates and crosslinked with oxidized dextran resulting in stable inorganic-organic composites. Physico-chemical characterization revealed a uniform distribution of metal nanoparticles within the scaffolds that showed a release of metals lower than 5 %. In vitro biological assays demonstrated that Ta composites exhibit a 2 times higher ALP activity than Ti and a higher capacity to support the full differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells into osteoblasts. These results highlight their potential for bone regeneration applications.

Rationalizing Graphene-ZnO Composites for Gas Sensing via Functionalization with Amines.

The rational design of composites based on graphene/metal oxides is one of the pillars for advancing their application in various practical fields, particularly gas sensing. In this study, a uniform distribution of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) through the graphene layer was achieved, taking advantage of amine functionalization. The beneficial effect of amine groups on the arrangement of ZnO NPs and the efficiency of their immobilization was revealed by core-level spectroscopy, pointing out strong ionic bonding between the aminated graphene (AmG) and ZnO. The stability of the resulting Am-ZnO nanocomposite was confirmed by demonstrating that its morphology remains unchanged even after prolonged heating up to 350 °C, as observed by electron microscopy. On-chip multisensor arrays composed of both AmG and Am-ZnO were fabricated and thoroughly tested, showing almost tenfold enhancement of the chemiresistive response upon decorating the AmG layer with ZnO nanoparticles, due to the formation of p-n heterojunctions. Operating at room temperature, the fabricated multisensor chips exhibited high robustness and a detection limit of 3.6 ppm and 5.1 ppm for ammonia and ethanol, respectively. Precise identification of the studied analytes was achieved by employing the pattern recognition technique based on linear discriminant analysis to process the acquired multisensor response.

Combustion synthesis of Ce/Mg co-doped ZnO nanoparticles as a visible-light-driven photocatalyst

ZnO and Ce/Mg co-doped ZnO nanoparticles as a visible-light-driven photocatalyst were synthesized by combustion method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of ZnO and Ce/Mg co-doped ZnO samples were indexed to the pure phase of hexagonal wurtzite ZnO structure without impurity detection. The Raman analysis of ZnO and Ce/Mg co-doped ZnO samples showed optical phonon E2H, A1(TO), E2L, E2H–E2L, A1(LO) and E1(LO) modes of wurtzite ZnO structure, including the detection of Zn−O stretching mode containing in FTIR spectra of hexagonal wurtzite ZnO. Transmission electron microscopic (TEM) images of ZnO and Ce/Mg co-doped ZnO samples showed uniform and good distribution of nanoparticles with different orientations. The photocatalysis of ZnO and Ce/Mg co-doped ZnO nanoparticles was studied through the degradation of methylene blue (MB) illuminated by visible radiation. In this research, the Zn0.97Ce0.015Mg0.015O nanoparticles have the highest efficiency of 95.16% within 150 min because of the largest specific surface area, smallest crystallite size and highest absorption capacity of visible light for active species production in degrading of MB under visible light. Photocatalytic mechanism of Ce/Mg co-doped ZnO nanoparticles in degrading MB was also proposed.

Facile synthesis of Au–TiO2/Bacterial cellulose aerogel nanocomposites with enhanced photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue under UV irradiation

The Au–TiO2/Bacterial cellulose aerogel nanocomposites (Au–TiO2/BC NCs) with remarkable photocatalytic properties and designed to solve agglomeration and reusability challenges in wastewater treatment have been successfully synthesized. The integration of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) with TiO2, in conjunction with bacterial cellulose (BC) serving as a three-dimensional nanostructure, resulted in the formation of Au–TiO2/BC NCs through mechanical compositing, a confirmation obtained through various characterization techniques including XRD, SEM, SEM-EDS, TEM, TEM-EDS, BET, XPS, FT-IR, Spectrofluorometer, Raman, and UV–vis spectroscopy. The combination of Au–TiO2 nanoparticles with BC showcased homogeneous coverage over BC nanostructures, attributed to BC's unique properties, particularly its surface hydroxyl groups that prevent TiO2 agglomeration, along with uniform distribution of Au nanoparticles on TiO2 layers. Photocatalytic activity, assessed through methylene blue (MB) degradation under both UV and direct sunlight irradiation, demonstrated significantly improved efficiency with AuNPs, achieving approximately 90% degradation in the Au–TiO2/BC NCs under UV irradiation. The synthesized NCs exhibited stability with a slight performance reduction after cyclic tests, indicating potential for wastewater treatment applications under diverse light conditions. The integration of Au NPs onto TiO2 surfaces amplified light-induced reactions, addressing critical challenges in environmental remediation, particularly in the degradation of persistent environmental pollutants. This study offers valuable insights, positioning Au–TiO2/BC NCs as promising candidates for sustainable environmental remediation, emphasizing reusability, enhanced photocatalytic performance, and a straightforward synthesis process under both UV and direct sunlight irradiation.

Synthesis and characterization of nano-biocomposite (PMMA-hydroxyapatite - CaZrO3) for bone tissue engineering

ABSTRACT In a common scenario, bone fractures have a self-healing function with free-surgical intervention. However, some fractures in bone tissue are complex and leave behind remnant deformation that requires biomaterials for replacement. The aim of this study is to develop a new composite 3D scaffold for bone regeneration and replacement composed of calcium zirconate (CaZrO3), hydroxyapatite (HA) and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) polymer. Different 3D scaffolds were fabricated by mixing 90, 80, 70, and 60 wt. % PMMA with HA and CaZrO3 nanoparticles in different concentrations. X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques were applied to characterize the 3D composite scaffold properties. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of the fabricated scaffolds were investigated using Brazilian diametral fracture test. It was found that incorporating a uniform distribution of HA nanoparticles significantly increased the surface roughness of the composite scaffold. Furthermore, the fracture strength of the fabricated 3D scaffolds showed a remarkable improvement of 86% in the sample containing 90% PMMA, 7% HA, and 3% CaZrO3 compared to the sample devoid of CaZrO3. Our findings strongly indicate that integrating hybrid CaZrO3-HA nanoparticles into PMMA polymer for the production of 3D composite scaffolds holds significant promise for bone tissue applications, potentially enhancing their efficacy and performance.

Preparation of Ni, Co doped hollow carbon nanocage from core-shell structure ZIF-8@ZIF-67 for nitrobenzene monitoring

Herein, we employed a Ni, Co duplex metal-doped hollow carbon nanocage derived from the core-shell Zeolite imidazole framework-8 (Zn)@Zeolite imidazole framework-67 (Co) (ZIF-8@ZIF-67) for the sensitive electrochemical detection of nitrobenzene (NB). The precursor was created by coating ZIF-67 on the surface of ZIF-8 through the epitaxial growth method, followed by Ni doping. Subsequent pyrolysis resulted in the formation of a Ni, Co duplex metal-doped hollow carbon nanocage. Characterization of the nanocomposite confirmed the unique hollow and porous structure of NiCo/C, maintaining a dodecahedral morphology with a uniform distribution of carbon and transition metal nanoparticles. The NiCo/C-modified electrode exhibits a wide linear dynamic range (0.05–11.22 μM and 11.22–230.06 μM), a lower limit of detection (0.14 μM), superior stability and selectivity for the detection of NB. Moreover, it shows appropriate practicality toward detecting NB in natural water samples.

Enhanced strength-ductility combination in the aluminum-gold system by heterogeneous distribution of nanoparticles via ultra-severe plastic deformation and reactive interdiffusion

Ultrafine-grained aluminum alloys are of interest due to their high strength-to-weight ratio, but they usually suffer from poor uniform ductility. In this study, an Al-Au alloy with a good combination of strength and ductility is produced by the heterogeneous distribution of Al2Au nanoparticles in an aluminum matrix. To generate such heterogeneity, the alloy is synthesized by ultra-severe plastic deformation of aluminum and gold powders via the high-pressure torsion method. Reactive interdiffusion occurs during the process leading to the heterogeneous formation of intermetallic particles and a good strength-ductility synergy (200 MPa yield stress and 15% uniform elongation). Nanoparticles gradually distribute within the matrix and once a uniform nanoparticle distribution is achieved, the alloy shows no further increase in strength, but it completely loses its ductility. It is concluded that not only the presence of nanoparticles but more importantly the heterogeneity of their distribution can positively influence the strength-ductility combination in ultrafine-grained aluminum alloys. The findings of this study suggest that future studies on heterogeneous precipitation hardening can be a solution to achieve ductile precipitation-hardened alloys.

Fabrication and Design of a Mechanical Polymer Mixer

Abstract: Polymer nanoparticle composites present industrial potential in many applications. However, some limitations for the application of these composites are due to the non-uniformity of their mechanical properties. One of the main issues of that drawback is the lack of uniform distribution of the nanoparticle’s reinforcement inside the polymer matrix. In other words, uniform distribution of nanoparticles throughout polymer matrices presents a crucial issue for obtaining sound parts of fair enough mechanical properties. That would present a limitation for use in different areas of applications. A mechanical mixer with a special design has been developed during the present work. A prototype mixer has been carried out, and used for the synthetization of polystyrene carbon nanoparticles, (CNP’s) composites. The design of the developed mechanical mixer is based on the principle of subjecting the mixture of CNP’s and Polymer to multi-shearing strokes in a bi-directions extrusion die during heating at appropriate temperature for a specific time. The produced composites have been subjected to metallographic examination, and mechanical testing to investigate the effectiveness of using the developed mechanical mixture. Metallographic examination of specimens of the produced composites parts using SEM have shown fair enough distribution of the carbon nanoparticles throughout the polymer matrix. The mechanical properties of the produced composites have been evaluated, and the results showed comparable values with respect to those dismantled in publications.

Synthesis of magnesium hydroxide powder and dry powders for application in extinguishing petroleum fires

AbstractFire extinguishing agents are an important factor in the fight against fires. In this study, a new composite powder (CSPMS) was synthesized and used to extinguish fires caused by petroleum products. SiO2 nanoparticles, Mg(OH)2 nanoparticles, and nanocomposites of NH4H2PO4/chitosan (CSP) were combined to generate CSPMS powder. The structure and morphology of the material were characterized using methods such as XRD, SEM, FTIR, etc. The results showed that the synthesized Mg(OH)2 nanoparticle size ranged from 20 to 30 nm, and the NH4H2PO4 nanoparticle size ranged from 800 to 900 nm on the chitosan surface. The CSPMS material had particle sizes ranging from 2 to 3 µm, with a uniform distribution of SiO2 nanoparticles (50–100 nm) and Mg(OH)2 nanoparticles on the surface. The powdered materials were applied to extinguish gasoline and oil fires. CSPMS sample demonstrated the best fire extinguishing time and powder consumption (5.8 s and 12.2 g, respectively) and CO emission below the threshold of 400 ppm. Small‐scale fire extinguishing tests showed that CSPMS powder had better fire extinguishing capability, cooling time, and CO gas adsorption ability compared to commercial fire extinguishing powder.

Structure and optical characterization of chitosan-chitin/Ag nanocomposite thin films

Chitin and its derivatives are common natural polymers that are widely used in various technological fields. In recent years, considerable attention has been paid to the preparation of polymer nanocomposites based on metal nanoparticles (NPs). Chitin/chitosan-based composites due to high antibacterial activity are suitable for application in related food storage, textile industries. This paper presents an effective and simple method of obtaining chitosan-chitin copolymer/Ag nanocomposites with an extremely high content of metal nanoparticles. The structure and morphology of the synthesized nanocomposites were investigated using X-ray diffractometry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and their optical properties were studied using UV-VIS spectroscopy as well as spectral ellipsometry. It was ascertained that the resulting nanocomposite films are characterized by a uniform distribution of spherical silver nanoparticles, the sizes of which increase (from 55 up to 143 nm) with increasing the Ag+-ions concentration in the reaction mixtures. The optical absorption spectra of nanocomposites are characterized by the presence of an absorption maximum within the range 458…525 nm, which confirms the formation of Ag NPs. A monotonous increase in the values of the energies of optical transitions was observed in the process of increasing the average size of NPs

Rhombohedral platinum-copper intermetallic compound: A high phosphate tolerance electrocatalyst for HT-PEMFC

In high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFC), phosphate anions act as a poisonous 'spectator species', binding strongly to the Pt surface through PtO bonds similarly to O2. This blocks the Pt active sites, resulting in slow ORR kinetics. Herein, we synthesized ultrafine L11-PtCu intermetallic compound nanoparticles (O-PtCu/S-C) loaded on an S-doped carbon support with an average size of about 3 nm through wet impregnation followed by hydrogen annealing, which showed high resistance to phosphate poisoning. The introduction of S notably improved the metal-support interaction and prevented particle growth during annealing, which is beneficial for the uniform distribution of nanoparticles and prevents detachment and agglomeration during ADT. The pronounced Cu-Pt electronic interaction in O-PtCu/S-C induced electron transfer from Cu to Pt, which effectively modified the electronic structure of Pt and weakened the adsorption energy of phosphate anions on the catalyst surface. In addition, the phosphate poisoning test results from both room temperature RDE and high-temperature RDE demonstrate that O-PtCu/S-C possesses excellent phosphate tolerance, superior ORR activity, and remarkable stability. It exhibits a superior peak power density of 800.5 mW cm−2 in 160°C H2-O2 HT-PEMFC with Pt loading of 0.5 mg cm−2. This research offers a novel approach to designing phosphate-resistant electrocatalysts for HT-PEMFC.

Rose petal patterns with “Lotus Effect”, corrosion resistance and photocatalytic bacterial inactivation

The study proposes a simple method that can easily transform the surface from the “rose petal effect” to the “lotus effect” and impart superhydrophobic and photocatalytic properties. The approach involves integrating hydrophobic TiO2 nanoparticles into a polystyrene (PS) matrix, employing a soft imprinting process to create intricate rose petal patterns. SEM and TEM images demonstrate the uniform distribution of TiO2 nanoparticles across the coated surface, providing roughness and elevating the static water contact angle to 163°, while reducing the hysteresis angle to below 5°. This approach effortlessly transitions the surface from the rose petal effect to the lotus effect. Furthermore, the highly superhydrophobic PS/TiO2 pattern coating demonstrates excellent corrosion resistance, with up to 99.98 % efficiency in Tafel experiments. Additionally, the PS/TiO2 pattern coating exhibits photocatalytic properties, effectively decomposing methylene blue and bacteria (S. aureus and E. coli). Through the integration of nanoparticles, this method not only enables precise control of surface properties, but also brings new applications to coatings.

Methanolic extract of Arctium lappa and Eryngium billardieri: Anti diabetic, antibacterial, anticancer and silver nanoparticles biosynthesis evaluation

The medical plant extract has been shown to be a sufficient source of nanoparticle biosynthesis and has been used in biomedical and technological domains. The best conditions for advantageous extraction of Arctium lappa and Eryngium billardieri, as well as the production of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) via the reduction of Ag+ ions by secondary metabolites of plant extracts, are reported in this study. The purified solution produced the absorbance peak at 426 nm, and DLS analysis revealed a uniform distribution of nanoparticles with an average size of almost 45 nm. Furthermore, antibacterial studies indicate that these compounds have a high potential for antibacterial activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Finally, the cytotoxicity of AgNPs on MCF7 and MCR-5 cell lines was determined using the 2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) test. The results demonstrate that the produced nanoparticles' toxicity on cells is very low (IC50, MCF-7 > 1 mg/ml and IC50, MCR-5 > 5 mg/ml) and dose-dependent. In addition, the antioxidant and anti-diabetic properties of Arctium lappa methanolic extract were studied. The inhibition of pancreatic α-amylase by this extract could possibly be useful in biomedicine.

ZIF67-ZIF8@MFC-Derived Co-Zn/NC Interconnected Frameworks Combined with Perfluorosulfonic Acid Polymer as a Highly Efficient and Stable Composite Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Reduction Reactions.

The development of precious metal-free (M-N-C) catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is considered crucial for reducing fuel cell costs. Herein, Co-Zn/NC interconnected frameworks with uniformly dispersed Co nanoparticles and graphitic carbon are designed and successfully synthesized through the in situ growth of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF67 and ZIF8) along with biomass nano-microfibrillar cellulose (MFC), followed by pyrolysis. A Co-Zn/NC composite is prepared by combining Co-Zn/NC with a perfluorosulfonic acid polymer. The Co-Zn/NC composite catalyst exhibits excellent ORR catalytic activity (E0 = 0.974 V vs. RHE, E1/2 = 0.858 V vs. RHE) and good long-term durability, with 90% current retention after 10000s, surpassing that of commercial Pt/C in alkaline media. The hierarchical porous structure, coupled with the uniform distribution of Co nanoparticles and nitrogen doping, contributes to superior electrocatalytic performance, while the interconnected frameworks and graphitic carbon ensure good stability. Additionally, the Co-Zn/NC composite demonstrates promising applications in acidic media. This strategy offers significant guidance to develop advanced non-precious metal carbon-based catalysts for highly efficient and stable ORR.

Comparative Study on the Thermal Properties of Engine Oils and Their Nanofluids Incorporating Fullerene-C60, TiO2 and Fe2O3 at Different Temperatures

The efficiency, durability, and overall performance of a car engine are influenced by several critical factors. The quality and properties of engine oil play a crucial role, and oil is used in internal combustion engines for lubrication and cooling purposes. This research study aimed to compare the impact of fullerene-C60 (99.5%), Fe2O3, and TiO2 nanoparticles on the thermal properties of C.A.L.T.E.X. red engine oil with grades 10W30, 20W40, and 20W50. This study focused on the effect of a nanoparticle concentration of 0.01 wt.% in different engine oil grades at various temperature values of 30–120 °C. The nanofluids were prepared using the two-step direct mixing method, employing a magnetic stirrer and an ultrasonicator, ensuring uniform distribution of nanoparticles in the base fluids. The thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, and volumetric heat capacity of the base fluids and nanofluids were measured using the FLUCON LAMBDA thermal conductivity meter. Additionally, flash points were measured using the flash point tester. It was concluded that the thermal properties of TiO2 and Fe2O3 showed considerable enhancement; in contrast, fullerene only showed a 212 °C flash point.

Photocatalytic activity of the biogenic mediated green synthesized CuO nanoparticles confined into MgAl LDH matrix

The global concern over water pollution caused by organic pollutants such as methylene blue (MB) and other dyes has reached a critical level. Herein, the Allium cepa L. peel extract was utilized to fabricate copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles. The CuO was combined with MgAl-layered double hydroxides (MgAl-LDHs) via a co-precipitation method with varying weight ratios of the CuO/LDHs. The composite catalysts were characterized and tested for the degradation of MB dye. The CuO/MgAl-LDH (1:2) showed the highest photocatalytic performance and achieved 99.20% MB degradation. However, only 90.03, 85.30, 71.87, and 35.53% MB dye was degraded with CuO/MgAl-LDHs (1:1), CuO/MgAl-LDHs (2:1), CuO, and MgAl-LDHs catalysts, respectively. Furthermore, a pseudo-first-order rate constant of the CuO/MgAl-LDHs (1:2) was 0.03141 min−1 while the rate constants for CuO and MgAl-LDHs were 0.0156 and 0.0052 min−1, respectively. The results demonstrated that the composite catalysts exhibited an improved catalytic performance than the pristine CuO and MgAl-LDHs. The higher photocatalytic performances of composite catalysts may be due to the uniform distribution of CuO nanoparticles into the LDH matrix, the higher surface area, and the lower electron and hole recombination rates. Therefore, the CuO/MgAl-LDHs composite catalyst can be one of the candidates used in environmental remediation.

Antimicrobial Antioxidant Polymer Films with Green Silver Nanoparticles from Symphyti radix.

Antimicrobial natural polymer film with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) biosynthesized using aqueous plant root extracts as reducing capping agents and for film formatting show extensive applicability for pathogenic microorganism problems. The formation of AgNPs was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) techniques. The antimicrobial activity of biofilm with green AgNPs was analysed by inhibiting the growth of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria culture using the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion susceptibility test. Total phenolic content and antioxidant activity were slightly higher in aqueous extracts of Sym. Radix than in Sym. Radix/AgNPs. The antimicrobial effect of polymer film/AgNPs against selected test bacteria cultures was substantially more robust than with pure film. Pictures of AgNPs obtained by TEM revealed the presence of spherical-shaped nano-objects with an average size 27.45 nm. SEM-EDS studies confirmed the uniform distribution of metal nanoparticles throughout the biopolymeric matrix. Morphological studies of the surface showed that the obtained surface of the films was even, without holes or other relief irregularities. These apparent Symphyti radix polymer film/AgNPs' biological functions could provide a platform for fighting pathogenic bacteria in the era of multi-drug resistance.
