Representation of Locality in Media Art in Yogyakarta: Dedy Shofianto's Kinetic Art Case Study

In the development of contemporary art, the issue of identity becomes a central and important thing to be studied more deeply, especially the personal or communal identity of marginalized parties in the context of modern society. This is what makes local values elevated and become a specific, unique identity character and become the characteristic of the artist in his work. Similarly, artists in Indonesia form a qualified personal representation with specific local values based on their background. Not just dwelling on conventional media, artists explore media more broadly. New media such as digital devices, kinetics, sound and so on are felt to be able to represent the state of the surrounding environment without abandoning the local identity that remains attached. Dedy Shofianto is one of the Yogyakarta artists whose execution uses conventional media but with a different approach, where kinetic elements become an identity that is closely related to the artist, which is supported by a strong local content narrative. The visual representation and material characteristics carried have a background and cultural narrative that is a unique characteristic of each of Shofianto's works, such as the use of wood materials that are attached to Indonesia as a tropical country and the myths of the archipelago are visible representations in Shofianto's works.

La Pinekonez: navigating challenges of homestay business

Learning outcomes After completion of the case study, the participants would be able to understand the challenges in building a sustainable homestay tourism business; develop a positioning statement for La Pinekonez which builds a unique competitive advantage; and outline elements of the business strategy to profitably sustain and grow a sustainable tourism homestay in terms of service offering, pricing, marketing and operations. Case overview/synopsis La Pinekonez Homestay, located in the beautiful region of Himachal Pradesh, India, is the subject of this case study, which explores both its successes and its difficulties. In August 2022, Arvind, the dedicated sole proprietor of La Pinekonez, grappled with multifaceted challenges, the first being the foray of established hotel chains into the homestay business. As the protagonist, was is in dilemma of preserving La Pinekonez’s unique identity amidst corporate competitors, particularly with regards to differentiating from the expanding hotel chains. The clash between customer expectations for hotel-like amenities and the homestay’s commitment to sustainable tourism presented a crucial challenge. Negative reviews questioning the authenticity of La Pinekonez’s green initiatives heightened the complexity. Adding to Arvind’s predicament were the seasonal fluctuations in tourist inflow and his aspiration to embrace immersive tourism trends. This case study facilitates exploration of strategic positioning, sustainability management and marketing strategies in the dynamic and competitive hospitality industry. It also offers insights into the complexities of balancing differentiation, customer satisfaction and sustainability while navigating the evolving landscape of tourism trends. Designing Jewelry from identity Black Spinel Fragments of Kanchanaburi Province

The design of jewelry from Kanjanaburi Province's identity aims to: 1) Classify the types, limitations, and information of local identity materials in Kanjanaburi Province. 2) Study the identity of Kanjanaburi Province, both in terms of abstract and concrete. 3) Develop guidelines for designing jewelry using local identity materials that communicate the uniqueness of Kanjanaburi Province. The research team gathered data from both documentary sources and field surveys in the Kanjanaburi Province, leading to an analysis of business-related issues in the gem and jewelry industry in the region. The key summarized points for jewelry design into 3 points include: 1) Utilization of local identity materials, black spinel, in Kanjanaburi Province. 2) The essence of the abstract and concrete of Kanjanaburi Province's identity. 3) Trends suitable for developing jewelry patterns from local identity materials. The important components for creating design guidelines, designing jewelry from local identity materials, and selecting a prototype for production were derived from the expertise of three specialists. These components contribute to the production of prototype jewelry representing the unique identity of Kanjanaburi Province. The research results categorize the types of black spinel into three categories: black spinel, black pyroxene, and magnetite. The information on the identity of Kanjanaburi Province can be divided into four aspects: 1) Natural and Environmental Aspect, 2) Cultural Aspect, 3) Ritual Aspect, and 4) Gem and Jewelry Aspect. These aspects lead to the conclusion of design guidelines for jewelry made from black spinel, representing the identity of Kanjanaburi Province, as evaluated by experts. The designed work is a jewelry set called 'Kanjanigar,' specifically inspired by the Kanjanaburi Province's flower, the Kanjanigar flower. The jewelry set includes various earring designs that can be worn according to different clothing styles and occasions. The materials used in the design are small-sized black spinel plates, along with black pyroxene, using drilling and resin techniques. The researchers have transferred this work to local entrepreneurs in Kanjanaburi Province through practical training sessions, with 22 participants. The pre-training understanding of design was rated at 3.31, while post-training understanding significantly increased to 4.65. This indicates that the provided guidelines can effectively enhance the knowledge and skills of local entrepreneurs in Kanjanaburi Province in designing jewelry from black spinel.

This paper presents a comprehensive overview of the theoretical modeling and methods on the concept of Architectural/Urban Identity. The author establishes a theoretical framework based on Parametric Design Theory, particularly focusing on fractal analysis and space syntax methodologies to examine the role of Parametric Architecture in preserving and expressing cultural heritage identity codes. Through a thorough review of existing literature on Parametric Design Theory in the context of cultural heritage identity codes, the author delves into the diverse applications, critiques, and theoretical interpretations of Parametric Architecture as it intersects with cultural heritage identity codes. By elucidating the essence of Parametric Design Theory, its operationalization, the predictions it generates, and the empirical evidence supporting its validity, the author lays the foundation for future research and open discussions regarding the potential of Parametric Architecture in preserving and expressing the unique cultural heritage identities of diverse communities around the world. Parametric design is a cutting-edge approach to architecture and building design that utilizes computer algorithms and mathematical equations to control the form and function of the design. This approach empowers designers to create intricate and organic structures that would be difficult or impossible to achieve using conventional methods. Parametric architecture has found its way into the design of a diverse range of buildings and structures, encompassing museums, concert halls, and office buildings. Gestational age at birth and type 1 diabetes in childhood and young adulthood: a nationwide register study in Finland, Norway and Sweden

Aims/hypothesisChildren and adults born preterm have an increased risk of type 1 diabetes. However, there is limited information on risk patterns across the full range of gestational ages, especially after extremely preterm birth (23–27 weeks of gestation). We investigated the risk of type 1 diabetes in childhood and young adulthood across the full range of length of gestation at birth.MethodsData were obtained from national registers in Finland, Norway and Sweden. In each country, information on study participants and gestational age was collected from the Medical Birth Registers, information on type 1 diabetes diagnoses was collected from the National Patient Registers, and information on education, emigration and death was collected from the respective national register sources. Individual-level data were linked using unique personal identity codes. The study population included all individuals born alive between 1987 and 2016 to mothers whose country of birth was the respective Nordic country. Individuals were followed until diagnosis of type 1 diabetes, death, emigration or end of follow-up (31 December 2016 in Finland, 31 December 2017 in Norway and Sweden). Gestational age was categorised as extremely preterm (23–27 completed weeks), very preterm (28–31 weeks), moderately preterm (32–33 weeks), late preterm (34–36 weeks), early term (37–38 weeks), full term (39–41 weeks; reference) and post term (42–45 weeks). HRs and 95% CIs from country-specific covariate-adjusted Cox regression models were combined in a meta-analysis using a common-effect inverse-variance model.ResultsAmong 5,501,276 individuals, 0.2% were born extremely preterm, 0.5% very preterm, 0.7% moderately preterm, 4.2% late preterm, 17.7% early term, 69.9% full term, and 6.7% post term. A type 1 diabetes diagnosis was recorded in 12,326 (0.8%), 6364 (0.5%) and 16,856 (0.7%) individuals at a median age of 8.2, 13.0 and 10.5 years in Finland, Norway and Sweden, respectively. Individuals born late preterm or early term had an increased risk of type 1 diabetes compared with their full-term-born peers (pooled, multiple confounder-adjusted HR 1.12, 95% CI 1.07, 1.18; and 1.15, 95% CI 1.11, 1.18, respectively). However, those born extremely preterm or very preterm had a decreased risk of type 1 diabetes (adjusted HR 0.63, 95% CI 0.45, 0.88; and 0.78, 95% CI 0.67, 0.92, respectively). These associations were similar across all three countries.Conclusions/interpretationIndividuals born late preterm and early term have an increased risk of type 1 diabetes while individuals born extremely preterm or very preterm have a decreased risk of type 1 diabetes compared with those born full term.Graphical

Visionary leadership and innovative mindset for sustainable business development: Case studies and practical applications

This study investigates the significance of visionary leadership and innovative leadership mindset on organizational sustainable development. The study investigates five case examples of business leadership to answer the research question of how the three-way interaction between visionary leadership, innovative leadership mindset, and business leadership approach may contribute to an organization’s sustainable development. The main argument is that the three-way interaction is considerable for the continuous development of an organization. This study uses the purposeful sampling strategy that matches the aim of the study. Therefore, five case examples from five different industries (the technological industry, the airline industry, the mining industry, the banking industry, and the automotive industry) have been selected intentionally to understand the study argument and to gather information that will answer the research question. The analysis highlighted key qualities of visionary leadership, innovative leadership mindset, and the five leadership approaches. The study infers that the proper match between the performed leadership approach and the existing visionary leadership and innovative mindset can create a unique organizational identity that serves its differentiation and continuous development.

Pesantren Resistance to Indonesia's National Curriculum to Defend Its Curriculum Model

Purpose: This article explores the challenges faced by pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) in Indonesia in reconciling the national curriculum with their traditional religious education while preserving their identity. Methods: The research employed a qualitative approach, utilizing multiple case studies conducted in two pesantren in Indonesia. The study involved observations, interviews, and documentation collected from January to December 2023. Result and Conclusion: The findings reveal a contestation between the national curriculum and the curriculum offered by pesantren. While many pesantren have integrated formal education, they exhibit resistance by focusing on Islamic teachings and values. Pesantren often modify the national curriculum to align with their religious identity. This study underscores the complexity of integrating formal education with pesantren's values and emphasizes the necessity of an inclusive approach from the government to ensure the relevance of education. Furthermore, it highlights pesantren's resistance to the dominance of the national curriculum, reflecting tensions between the government's modernization agenda and the traditional values upheld by pesantren. Research Implications: This research contributes to understanding the dynamics between formal education and traditional Islamic education within Indonesia's pesantren context. It sheds light on the challenges pesantren face in maintaining their identity while conforming to national educational standards. The findings have implications for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders involved in shaping the educational landscape of Indonesia. Originality/ Value: This study offers original insights into the interaction between the national curriculum and pesantren's curriculum, which have not been extensively explored in existing literature. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of educational dynamics in Indonesia by examining pesantren's responses to government policies and state control. Additionally, it underscores the significance of preserving the unique identity of pesantren amidst efforts to modernize the educational system.

RETHINKING THE SERVICESCAPES OF NEW GENERATION BANKS: EVIDENCE FROM TÜRKIYE

Retail banking is evolving from functional touchpoints to experiential touchpoints. The role, purpose, size & format, location and density in retail banking is changing especially with the effect of pandemic and changing consumer expectations. The primary aim of the study is to explore the new role and concept of servicescapes in retail banking with an inclusive and participatory approach. The secondary aim is to find out the ideal servicescape dimensions of a retail banking branch and reposition them. Türkiye İş Bankası (TİB), is the chosen brand due to its dedication to establishing a unique identity through the ages. The data is collected through in-depth interviews with 28 employees and 20 customers. Subsequently, idea-generation workshops and branding sessions were conducted. Finally, customer journey mapping for three target profiles were created. The findings demonstrate the proposed modular approach's flexibility and scalability, enabling customization for various locations, sizes and formats. This ensures a consistent and ideal spatial experience across different branches.

Community-led approaches to the academic development of pracademics in universities: evidence from Ghana

ABSTRACT This paper examines how pracademics who teach at different universities in Ghana contribute to shaping their academic development. In this study, a pracademic refers to an industry practitioner who is employed by a university as a part-time academic to teach academic courses and support the knowledge and skills development of learners. Using a dialogical narrative approach, data were gathered from 14 pracademics who teach academic courses at different universities in Ghana. The findings revealed that the academic development of pracademics is linked to their unique professional identity, the social networks that support their personal and professional growth, and the complex professional community in which they operate. The narratives of the participants revealed that the network of pracademics serves to promote their common interests, which include needs (social, job-related, and resources), expectations, access to opportunities, and their ability to promote academic disciplines. Additionally, pracademics are likely to be highly motivated to join informal networks within a broad context – pracademia, when they know that issues concerning their job security and professional development in the areas of teaching, research, and engaged scholarship will be prioritised by the management of universities.

Cultural Transmission in Korean Genre Films: Examining the Disaster Movie “Train to Busan” as an Example

In recent years, Korean films have become increasingly prosperous. In addition to borrowing from the classic Hollywood model, their genres have also widely incorporated local culture and values, revealing human nature. The combination of these two elements has broadened its dissemination worldwide and widely promoted Korean culture, providing some inspiration for the development of Chinese genre films. Taking the Korean disaster film “Train to Busan” as an example, this paper analyzes the general framework of cultural communication employed in South Korean films. By studying the film’s content and communication style, it becomes evident that Korean filmmakers blend local values into their narratives while referring to the Western film model. This nuanced approach not only captivates audiences but also carries cultural messages that resonate universally. At the same time, it is also compared with China’s films, which provides strategic reference for the international spread of Chinese films. By recognizing the strengths and weaknesses of both cinematic traditions, China's film industry can refine its strategies, enhancing its global reach while preserving its unique cultural identity. In essence, the success of Korean films offers valuable lessons and inspiration for the continued growth and influence of Chinese genre films in the global cinematic landscape.

Invisible Man (1952) addresses socio-cultural, economic, political, and ideological issues that African-Americans experienced in 20th century. This study interprets the concept of invisibility in Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man over Bois’s theory of “Double consciousness”. Story's unnamed young black narrator exists in surrealist America of 20th century dependent on deception to survive. America can only live over pretense. The focus of study is on the struggle of unnamed protagonist to survive and be visible in America. This research will highlight challenges that African Americans face due to their race. It will look at the choice the African Americans make; assimilate or maintain their unique identity.

EXPLORING THE MICRO AND MACRO TERROIR OF FETEASCĂ NEAGRĂ WINE FROM MOLDOVA

This study delves into the intricate realm of Moldovan winemaking, focusing on the iconic Fetească Neagră grape variety. The research highlights the importance of indigenous grape varieties in shaping a unique wine identity for the region. Drawing on the concept of terroir, the study investigates the microbial terroir specific to three designated geographical regions in Moldova during the 2022 vintage. The research employs a multifaceted approach, combining climate data analysis, mini vinification experiments, microbial DNA extraction, and sensory evaluation techniques. Results reveal significant variations in climatic conditions and microbial diversity across the three regions, influencing the sensory characteristics of the resulting wines. On vintage 2022 the Codru is temperature， and the Stefan-Voda and Vadul lui Traian are warm climates. All the 3 regions are moderately dry. The Stefan Voda is 14.0%， and manifests the highest ethanol content among the regions, alongside the lowest pH level. The sensory evaluations show Stefan Voda evincing heightened creaminess, Codru showcasing prominent herbal nuances, and Vadul lui Traian displaying elevated scores in berry, cherry, violet, and black pepper descriptors. Through meticulous analysis, the study underscores the dynamic interplay between environmental factors, microbial communities, and wine attributes, shedding light on the complex tapestry of Moldovan winemaking. Ultimately, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of terroir-driven wine production and emphasizes the importance of preserving indigenous grape varieties to uphold the distinctiveness of Moldovan wines on the global stage.

Identity Based Authentication Scheme (IAS) for Securing WSN Based Internet of Things

The growing number of connected devices in IoT networks has raised security concerns. These networks face unique challenges, including limited resources, lack of standardized security protocols, and diverse devices and applications. Identity-based authentication is needed to address these threats and limitations. Implementing a multi-factor authentication system can enhance security and protect sensitive information from unauthorized access. The proposed Identity Based Authentication (IAS) scheme is implemented using the NS-2 simulator to address security challenges in IoT networks. Each node is assigned a unique identity for authentication, ensuring only authorized access and preventing security breaches. The IAS scheme enhances IoT network security by verifying node identities. Two scenarios are considered to evaluate the scalability and interoperability of the IAS scheme. The first scenario involves a random environment, assessing performance in real-world settings with varying device densities and network conditions. The second scenario involves a cluster-based environment, providing insights into the scheme's functionality and efficiency. By examining both scenarios, this research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how the authentication scheme performs in different deployment scenarios. The findings highlight the importance of selecting the appropriate authentication scheme based on the specific network environment and requirements. The superiority of the IAS authentication scheme suggests its potential for widespread adoption and implementation in various network scenarios over other authentication schemes.

The Motif of Freedom as a Reflection of the National Identity of Brazil through the Prism Romantic Era Poetry

The article is devoted to the study of the process of the formation of Brazilian national identity through the prism of poetry as one of the most important elements of the nation's identity and maturity. The relevance of this topic is connected not only with the growing interest of Russian humanitarian science in the ‘Other West’, but also with application to the task of successful interaction with representatives of a particular culture requiring familiarity with the meanings that determine their self-identification. It is necessary to have a holistic understanding of the process of national identity formation and social factors behind its transformation. The characteristic features of the rich culture of the Luso-Brazilian world nevertheless suggest a high degree of differentiation in the identity of the people of Portugal and its former colonies. The aim of the study is to analyze how the motif of freedom manifests itself in the works of Brazilian Romantic poets, reflecting the gradual conceptualization of Brazilian national and cultural identity. To achieve this goal, the following objectives were set: first, to systematize the existing works on the national identity of Brazilians; second, to identify the motif of freedom in specific poems by prominent poets of the studied era and trace how this motif reveals identity of a Brazilian. The materials of the study are the corpus of works by Brazilian Romantic poets, comprising both the original works and their translations into Russian (including translations made by the author of this article). The leading research method was culturalhistorical; the corpus study was conducted by means of content analysis. The novelty of the study was determined by the fact of addressing the motif of freedom, considered as a key factor of Brazilian identity. As a result, it is shown how this motif was formed in the work of Brazilian Romantic poets of the 19th century, branching out into many conceptualizations of freedom. The study of the corpus of Brazilian poetic texts provides convincing evidence that the motif of freedom was one of the first steps for Brazilian society to realize its unique identity. The author concludes that the beginning of this process in the 19th century is associated with such vectors of comprehension of freedom as the desire of Brazilians to return to their homeland from foreign lands, escape from reality/life, freedom in the choice of Christian religion and freedom from sin, the desire to show strength, awareness of the important role of indigenous peoples and praise of the Indian struggle against oppression and despotism, resistance to slavery and colonizers. Gradually, however, the ontology of freedom from is complemented by an ontology of freedom for: Brazilian poets find imaginative solutions that reveal the identity of their people as a cultural search for a counterpart of communication.

Intersectional Motherhood and Candidate Evaluations in the United States

Abstract In the United States, emphasizing their families and talking about parenthood can be a potent strategy for political candidates as voters use information about a candidate’s family life to make assessments of the candidate’s personal attributes and issue competencies. We nonetheless know little about how a candidate’s race affects these assessments. We thus consider how Black women use and benefit from politicizing motherhood, and we argue that the unique intersectional identities of Black women shaped jointly by their race and gender can give Black women a stronger strategic advantage from highlighting motherhood compared to white women. Using both observational and experimental data, we apply this intersectional framework by examining motherhood messages. We identify the extent to which Black women rely on messages about motherhood and how voters respond. Our results show that Black women are just as likely to use motherhood messages relative to white women, and that Black women receive positive evaluations from voters from a message emphasizing motherhood. White and minority voters are equally likely to positively rate Black women who emphasize motherhood.

Finding the last bits of positional information.

In a developing embryo, information about the position of cells is encoded in the concentrations of morphogen molecules. In the fruit fly, the local concentrations of just a handful of proteins encoded by the gap genes are sufficient to specify position with a precision comparable to the spacing between cells along the anterior-posterior axis. This matches the precision of downstream events such as the striped patterns of expression in the pair-rule genes, but is not quite sufficient to define unique identities for individual cells. We demonstrate theoretically that this information gap can be bridged if positional errors are spatially correlated, with correlation lengths ~ 20% of the embryo length. We then show experimentally that these correlations are present, with the required strength, in the fluctuating positions of the pair-rule stripes, and this can be traced back to the gap genes. Taking account of these correlations, the available information matches the information needed for unique cellular specification, within error bars of ~ 2%. These observation support a precisionist view of information flow through the underlying genetic networks, in which accurate signals are available from the start and preserved as they are transformed into the final spatial patterns.

Abstract Amidst globalization and the Fourth Industrial Revolution, indigenous language preservation and promotion gain paramount significance. These languages encapsulate rich cultural, historical, and ecological value, embodying unique knowledge systems and identities. Nevertheless, challenges stemming from historical, social, resource, and institutional constraints impede preservation, with digital media technology thus emerging as a pivotal tool in this endeavour. This paper meticulously explores the role of digital media technology in indigenous language preservation during the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Through a comprehensive review of reputable literature, including scholarly articles, case studies, and expert insights, the paper underscores the imperative of language preservation, delving into the obstacles hindering preservation efforts and spotlighting the pivotal role of digital media technology in rejuvenating indigenous languages. The paper also examines various digital tools and applications that facilitate preservation, emphasizing their accessibility and engagement, while also underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts involving indigenous communities, linguists, and technology experts. Ethical considerations, encompassing intellectual property rights and informed consent, are of paramount importance in indigenous language preservation, and thus this paper also consolidates insights derived from the findings and provides recommendations for effective preservation strategies, underlining the necessity of ethical guidelines and emphasizing the indispensable role of government support. The study concludes by addressing prospects and challenges in indigenous language preservation, providing a comprehensive view of safeguarding linguistic heritage in the digital age.

Team players and helpers – describing professional identity among finnish physicians in a cross-sectional study

BackgroundEvery physician has a unique professional identity. However, little is known about the diversity of identities among physicians. This study aimed to quantitatively assess the professional identity of physicians in Finland using descriptions of professional identity.MethodsThis study was part of a larger cross-sectional Finnish Physician 2018 Study. The target population consisted of all Finnish physicians under the age of 70 (N = 24,827) in 2018. The sample was drawn from physicians born on even numbered days (N = 11,336) using the Finnish Medical Association register. A total of 5,187 (46%) physicians responded. Professional identity was examined by 27 given characterisations using a five-point Likert scale. Multivariate logistic regression was used in assessing how place of work, graduation year and gender were associated with identity descriptions.ResultsThe descriptions which most physicians identified with were “member of a working group/team” (82%), “helper” (82%), and “health expert” (79%); the majority reported these as describing them very or quite well. Identity descriptions such as “prescriber of medications” (68% vs. 45%), “prioritiser” (57% vs. 35%) and “someone issuing certificates” (52% vs. 32%) were more popular among junior than senior physicians. The biggest differences between the genders were found in the descriptions “provider of comfort” (62% vs. 40%) and “someone engaged in social work” (45% vs. 25%), with which women identified more frequently than men.ConclusionsStrong identification as a member of a team is an important finding in the increasingly multiprofessional world of health care. Importantly, most physicians shared several core professional identity descriptions (i.e., helper, health expert) that reflect the traditional image of an exemplary doctor.
