Autoinforme de peso e insatisfacción con el peso corporal

El objetivo de este estudio fue examinar la influencia común del índice de masa corporal (IMC) e insatisfacción con el peso corporal en las estrategias del control de peso y quejas físicas y psicológicas. Un total de 5404 adolescentes rumanos a la edad de entre 13 y 15 años (50.6% chicas) participaron en un estudio más grande que examinaba las conductas y actitudes de riesgo de salud en los jóvenes. Los participantes tenían que dar su peso y altura (para calcular el IMC). También respondieron a las preguntas sobre su insatisfacción con el peso corporal, control de peso insalubre y quejas sobre molestias de salud física y psicológica. Hemos usado la regresión logística para examinar la relación entre el IMC, la insatisfacción con el peso corporal, el control de peso insalubre y las molestias de salud. 21% de adolescentes autoevaluaron que padecen sobrepeso, con 10% de adolescentes de peso normal insatisfechos con su peso corporal. Las molestias de salud más frecuentes reportadas por los adolescentes fueron dolor de cabeza (23.3%), problemas con el sueño (16.7%) y mal humor (32%). Hubo una interacción significativa entre el IMC y la insatisfacción con el tamaño corporal para predecir el control de peso insalubre y síntomas físicos y psicológicos. Los adolescentes sin sobrepeso pero insatisfechos con su cuerpo mostraban más tendencias a las conductas de control de peso insalubre y reportaban tanto síntomas físicos como psicológicos en comparación con sus compañeros con el sobrepeso o aquellos más satisfechos con su cuerpo. El presente estudio sugiere que el uso de métodos del control de peso insalubre no es poco común entre los adolescentes con niveles altos de insatisfacción, y que tienen el IMC dentro de lo normal. Las intervenciones deberían tratar de abordar las preocupaciones sobre el peso corporal y proporcionar a los adolescentes habilidades para valorar críticamente ideales de peso corporal.

Body-related Perspectives and Weight Control Methods of Korean-Chinese Nursing School Students in Yanbian, China: A Pilot Study.

ObjectivesThis study aimed at identifying the current nutrition knowledge, body-related perspectives, and weight control behaviors of Korean-Chinese college students.MethodsWe conducted a pilot study by employing a healthy weight education program targeting Korean-Chinese nursing school students at the Yanbian University of Science and Technology in Yanbian, China.ResultsThis pilot study included 40 participants (38 women and 2 men; mean age, 20.5 years). The current weight status of the participants was as follows: 7.9% underweight, 78.9% normal weight, 7.9% overweight, and 5.3% obese. However, nearly two-thirds of the participants were dissatisfied with their current body size (43.6% a little dissatisfied; 20.5% very dissatisfied). Fifty percent of the participants perceived their current body size as being either slightly fat (35.0%) or very fat (15.0%). The following unhealthy weight control methods were commonly used among the 24 participants who practiced weight control: (1) laxatives or diuretics (91.7%), (2) saunas or spas (87.5%), and (3) a one-food diet (79.2%). In addition, the nutrition knowledge of the participants increased by 24 points from 117 points (pretest) to 141 points (posttest) through the healthy weight education program.ConclusionThe findings of this study indicate an urgent need to educate Korean-Chinese college students on healthy weight control methods and body-related perspectives.

Associations between yoga/meditation use, body satisfaction, and weight management methods: Results of a national cross-sectional survey of 8009 Australian women

ObjectivesTo analyze whether yoga or meditation use is associated with body (dis)satisfaction and weight control methods in Australian women. MethodsWomen ages 34 to 39 y from the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health were surveyed regarding body satisfaction, weight control behaviors, and yoga and meditation practice. Associations of body satisfaction and weight control methods with yoga/meditation practice were analyzed using chi-squared tests and multiple logistic regression modelling. ResultsOf the 8009 women, 49% were overweight or obese. Sixty-five percent of women with normal body mass index (BMI) and approximately 95% of women with overweight/obesity wanted to lose weight. At least one in four women with normal BMI was dissatisfied with body weight and shape, as were more than two in three women with overweight/obesity. The most common weight control methods included exercising (82.7%), cutting down meal sizes (76.8%), and cutting down sugars or fats (71.9%). Yoga/meditation was practiced frequently by 688 women (8.6%) and occasionally by 1176 women (14.7%). Yoga/meditation users with normal BMI were less likely dissatisfied with body weight and shape. All yoga/meditation users more likely exercised and followed a low glycemic diet or diet books; and women with obesity occasionally using yoga/meditation also more likely used fasting or smoking to lose weight. ConclusionYoga/meditation users with normal BMI appear to be more satisfied with their body weight and shape than non-yoga/meditation users. While women with normal BMI or overweight tend to rely on healthy weight control methods, women with obesity occasional using yoga/meditation may more likely utilize unhealthy weight control methods.

The Relationship of Disordered Eating Attitudes With Body Composition and Anthropometric Indices in Physical Education Students

Background:Abnormal eating behavior, unhealthy weight control methods, and eating disordered symptoms have risen among college students.Objectives:The aim of this study was to examine disordered eating attitudes and their relationship with anthropometric and body composition indices in physical education students in Tabriz, the capital of East Azerbaijan province, Iran.Patients and Methods:This cross-sectional study was conducted on 210 physical education students, 105 males and 105 females aged 18 to 25, who were selected by systematic random sampling from physical education faculty of Tabriz University in Tabriz, Iran, in 2013. Eating attitude test (EAT-26) was used for the assessment of disordered eating attitudes. In addition, anthropometric and body composition indices were assessed.Results:About 10% of the studied subject had disturbed eating attitudes; significantly more males (15.4%) reported an EAT-26 ≥ 20 (disordered eating attitudes) than females (4.8%) (P < 0.05). In males, the EAT-26 score was positively correlated with weist perimeter (WP) (r = 0.21, P < 0.05) and the waist-to-hip ratio (r = 0.26, P < 0.01). In females, the EAT-26 score was positively correlated with weight (r = 0.19, P < 0.05) and the WP (r = 0.28, P < 0.01). In females, weight (P < 0.05), body mass index (BMI) (P < 0.05), WP (P < 0.01), and waist-to-hip ratio (P < 0.05) were significantly different between disordered eating attitude and healthy subjects, while in males there was no significant difference between the two groups regarding the anthropometric and body composition indices.Conclusions:Abnormal eating attitude was notable among physical education students in Tabriz, Iran. It seems that some anthropometric indices such as BMI and central obesity indices were related to the increase of disordered eating attitude.

Vegetarianism and Eating Disorder Risk Behavior in Adolescents from São Paulo, Brazil

Adolescents stated whether they were currently vegetarian, and the sample was dichotomized as vegetarian and non-vegetarian. The two groups were compared as regards weight status, eating disorder risk behavior, unhealthy weight control methods and the perception of healthy eating. ResultsAbout 4% of the sample was currently vegetarian, most of them female (70.8%), and females were 2.89 times more likely to be vegetarian than males. No relationship was found between the vegetarian status and unhealthy weight control behavior; however the vegetarian group considered their diet to be healthier than the non-vegetarian group (P=.04). ConclusionsThe frequency of vegetarianism, as well the frequency of eating disorder risk behaviors had no association in this adolescent sample from São Paulo, Brazil.

Disordered Eating and the Use of Unhealthy Weight Control Methods in College Students: 1995, 2002, and 2008

This study investigated whether eating disorders and the use of unhealthy weight control methods increased over time in male and female university undergraduate students. Data from three random sample surveys of college students were collected over a 13-year period to investigate trends in disordered eating and unhealthy weight control behaviors. Data were collected in 2008 from 641 male and female randomly sampled undergraduate students were compared to 274 randomly sampled undergraduates surveyed in 2002 and 493 surveyed in 1995. Behaviors falling within the diagnostic category of eating disorders not otherwise specified (EDNOS) in both males and females significantly increased over time in accordance with the use of unhealthy weight control methods. Eating disorders should be routinely addressed by college health professionals through both treatment and prevention efforts, especially considering the frequent concurrent psychiatric and physiological comorbidities.

Body weight perception among high school students and its influence on weight management behaviors in normal weight students: a cross-sectional study

This study investigates body weight perception and its influence on weight management behaviors in normal weight adolescents in Timis County, Romania. We hypothesized that misperception of overweight in normal weight adolescents would be positively associated with unhealthy weight control behaviors. From 2908 respondents participating in the survey we selected a total of 2093 normal weight high school students for the analysis. Outcome measures included self-reported height and weight measurements, overweight misperceptions and weight control behaviors. Weighted prevalence estimates and odds ratios were computed. There were 22.64% of normal weight students who perceived themselves as overweight. Females (36.48%) were more likely to perceive themselves as overweight than males (8.15%) (P < 0.0001). After adjusting for age and gender, students who perceived themselves as overweight were more likely to exercise (OR = 2.85; 95% CI: 2.25-3.61), eat less food, fewer calories or low fat foods (OR = 3.54; 95% CI: 2.78-4.51), fast for 24 hours or more (OR = 1.79; 95% CI: 1.28-2.49), take diet pills, powders or tea (OR = 3.93; 95% CI: 2.62-5.89), vomit or take laxatives (OR = 1.96; 95% CI: 1.15-3.34) to lose weight or to keep from gaining weight, compared to students who did not perceive themselves as overweight. A significant proportion of normal weight high school students misperceive themselves as overweight and are engaging in unhealthy weight management behaviors. These results should be considered when establishing prevention programs and educational components that address weight misperceptions and the harmful effects of unhealthy weight control methods should be performed even among normal weight adolescents.

Prevalence of overweight misperception and weight control behaviors among normal weight adolescents in the United States

Weight perceptions and weight control behaviors have been documented with underweight and overweight adolescents, yet limited information is available on normal weight adolescents. This study investigates the prevalence of overweight misperceptions and weight control behaviors among normal weight adolescents in the U.S. by sociodemographic and geographic characteristics. We examined data from the 2003 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). A total of 9,714 normal weight U.S. high school students were included in this study. Outcome measures included self-reported height and weight measurements, overweight misperceptions, and weight control behaviors. Weighted prevalence estimates and odds ratios were computed. There were 16.2% of normal weight students who perceived themselves as overweight. Females (25.3%) were more likely to perceive themselves as overweight than males (6.7%) (p < 0.05). Misperceptions of overweight were highest among white (18.3%) and Hispanic students (15.2%) and lowest among black students (5.8%). Females (16.8%) outnumbered males (6.8%) in practicing at least one unhealthy weight control behavior (use of diet pills, laxatives, and fasting) in the past 30 days. The percentage of students who practiced at least one weight control behavior was similar by ethnicity. There were no significant differences in overweight misperception and weight control behaviors by grade level, geographic region, or metropolitan status. A significant portion of normal weight adolescents misperceive themselves as overweight and are engaging in unhealthy weight control behaviors. These data suggest that obesity prevention programs should address weight misperceptions and the harmful effects of unhealthy weight control methods even among normal weight adolescents.

Characteristics of binge eating among women in the community seeking treatment for binge eating or weight loss

This study examined characteristics of binge eating among overweight women in the community seeking treatment for binge eating or weight loss. Five hundred and ninety-two women completed a telephone interview in which binge eating was thoroughly assessed. A large percentage of the sample (84.4%) reported features of binge eating consistent with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed., DSM-IV) definition of a binge. A significantly higher rate of DSM-IV BED (33.6%) was found compared to previous studies. Eleven percent of the sample denied bingeing/purging (nonbinge eating disorder, NBED) and 55.4% of the sample reported other eating problems such as bingeing or purging. Women with binge eating disorder (BED) had a higher BMI, became overweight earlier, and reported more unhealthy weight control methods than NBED women. BED women also reported more current and past depression and suicidal ideation than NBED women. BED reported more maternal overweight than NBED, but BED and NBED participants did not differ in paternal overweight or parental eating disorders. Future studies should investigate the relationship between binge eating and suicidal ideation to better understand whether depression precedes or follows binge eating.

A prevention program for disturbed eating and body dissatisfaction in adolescent girls: a 1 year follow-up.

This study evaluated an intervention program to reduce moderate and extreme weight loss behaviors, disordered eating and low body image. The Body Image and Eating Behavior Intervention Program consisted of five specialized classes addressing media images of women, determinants of body size, healthy and unhealthy weight control methods, and emotional eating. The program was conducted in year 9 in Schools 1 (n = 80) and 2 (n = 27), while students from the same year in School 3 (n = 29) were control subjects. Participants completed self-report questionnaires assessing eating behavior and body image attitudes prior to the program, 1 months after the program and at 12 months follow-up, while control subjects completed the questionnaires at the same time but did not receive the program. Data were analyzed using groups (Schools 1, 2 and 3) by testing occasion (pre, post and follow-up) analyses of variance with repeated measures on testing occasion. Measures of disordered eating and frequency of use of extreme weight loss behaviors were constant over testing occasion and showed no effect of the intervention program. Body dissatisfaction was consistently lower in School 1 but increased across all subjects over the year. The implications of these data for school-based intervention programs in this area are examined.
