The purpose of this study is to determine effective measures for prevention and support as well as the prevalence, experiences, and obstacles experienced by male victims of domestic violence in South Africa. Significance of this study's conclusions can help create effective preventative and support programs as well as a better understanding of domestic violence against men in South Africa. Additionally, the study can assist in dispelling negative preconceptions and increasing awareness of the problem. Anyone interested in tackling domestic violence against males, including policymakers, researchers, practitioners, and community members, should find this study to be useful. In conclusion. Male victims of domestic abuse are a severe problem that has to be addressed. We may endeavour to create a society where all people, regardless of gender, can live free from abuse by addressing the root causes of violence, offering assistance to victims, and dispelling damaging misconceptions.

Coercive control: Health, victims' rights and the ethics of care

This article provides healthcare professionals with an overview of research on coercive control, a paramount concept for understanding domestic violence, primarily targeting women and children. It aims to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and integrate advances into professional practices and (psycho)education. To this end, we present the conceptual evolution of coercive control and the perpetrators' behavioral patterns, their risks for victims and professionals, their devastating impact on the rights and biopsychosocial health of adult and child victims, and the challenges posed by technology, particularly generative artificial intelligence.

The problem of domestic violence, hereinafter referred to as domestic violence, is actually a problem that often occurs in married life, but some people, especially in villages, do not consider what they experience as a wrong act in the eyes of the law. Therefore, the public needs to be given an understanding of domestic violence, so that if domestic violence occurs or experiences, the victim can take steps or resolve it legally according to Law Number 23 of 2004 concerning Domestic Violence. The aims of the Community Trial are (1) To provide an understanding of Law Number 23 of 2004 concerning Domestic Violence; (2) To provide an understanding of the forms of legal protection for victims of domestic violence that must be provided by the police; (3) To provide investigators with an understanding of penal mediation in criminal acts of domestic violence. This community service activity is motivated by phenomena that occur in society. This Community Service Activity (PPM) at the Faculty of Law, Sunan Bonang University, Tuban, was attended especially by residents of the Mulyoagung Village Government, numbering approximately 15 people. The activity was carried out at the Mulyoagung Village Hall, Singgahan District, Tuban Regency. carried out by means of socialization and/or providing education through the lecture method. The lecture method was used to explain increasing public awareness of domestic violence (KDRT) from a criminal law perspective in Indonesia on the basis of statutory regulations related to domestic violence and social agendas by distributing donations in the form of money to participants. Overall service activities can be said to be good and successful, seen from the success of the target number of training participants (100%), achievement of training objectives (75%), achievement of planned material targets (80%), and participants' ability to master the material (75%).

The problem of domestic violence: issues of theory and practice

The article is devoted to the problem of understanding domestic violence in the legal system of the modern state. Risk factors for domestic and family violence are examined, including individual characteristics, relationship problems, and community and societal influences. Individual factors include the psychological and physical characteristics of victims and perpetrators, which may include problems with emotion regulation, low self-esteem, and childhood trauma. Also, sexual orientation and gender identity can influence the risk of becoming a victim or a perpetrator. It is reasoned that domestic violence has serious consequences for victims, their families and society as a whole. It can lead to injuries, psychological and emotional problems, destroy relationships, disrupt the development of children and reduce the productivity and efficiency of society. Domestic violence is becoming a global problem that crosses cultural and geographic boundaries, and the level of its prevalence can vary depending on the socio-cultural and economic context. Also important is the role of economic factors, such as unemployment and economic hardship, which can increase family tension and contribute to violence. It was also found that at the community level, lack of access to psychological and legal aid services, as well as lack of education about rights and opportunities to leave violent relationships can complicate the situation for victims. In addition, cultural stereotypes and norms that condone or normalize violence may also support this problematic pattern. At the same time, research must be carried out taking into account the diversity of cultural, social and economic contexts, since approaches to solving the problem may differ depending on specific conditions. Special attention should also be paid to the support of victims of domestic violence, their access to safe places of refuge, legal aid and psychological support. Increasing public awareness and educational initiatives about the issue can also help increase awareness and support in the fight against domestic violence.

Domestic Violence and Abuse: Expanding Our Conceptual Repertoire

ABSTRACTThis article aims to clarify and expand our conceptual repertoire for understanding domestic violence and abuse by making legible different characteristic harms, particularly those that cannot be made sense of in terms of physical harm. Sections 2 and 3 of this article review popular understandings of the harms of domestic violence and abuse. These often emphasize either (a) pain and suffering or (b) the loss of capacities for self‐governance as characteristic harms of domestic violence and abuse. In its second half, this article argues that domestic violence and abuse characteristically involve yet another harm to the victim, one that cannot neatly be explained in terms of hedonistic welfare or concerns for a victim's capacities for self‐governance. More specifically, this article argues that through the characteristic social isolation of domestic violence and abuse, perpetrators alienate victims from what motivationally roots them to the world. Although relationships that motivationally root us to the world might make us fundamentally dependent on others and can cause us great pain, they nevertheless play a profoundly valuable role in our lives by giving us reasons to go on living.

Gender differences among mental health professionals’ knowledge of domestic violence

ABSTRACT Objective This article aims to discuss the gender differences among female and male mental health professionals working with domestic violence survivors. In addition, this article suggests gender is a significant variable that should be considered in domestic violence education, research, and practice. Method Data were collected from a sample of 175 mental health professionals who responded to quantitative and qualitative questions assessing their knowledge of DV. Data were imported to the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS), version 28 which was used to analyze the data. Descriptive statistical methods were employed to explore the descriptive statistics of the demographic variables. Cross-tabulation and chi-square tests were used to explore associations between variables. Results The findings show that gender differences exist among female and male mental health professionals’ knowledge of domestic violence. Female mental health professionals tend to have a higher awareness and understanding of domestic violence about prevalence, while male mental health professionals tend to have a higher understanding of the impact of domestic violence on racial and ethnic women and women in various age groups. Discussion The study demonstrates the need to integrate an inclusive gender analysis that examines the competency, knowledge, and skills among mental health professionals working with domestic violence survivors. A gender analysis is crucial in further exploring mental health professionals’ roles, attitudes, treatment, outcomes, and approaches to domestic violence cases.

What can veterinary professionals do? Measuring the effect of one domestic violence training pilot program on veterinary professionals' capacity to recognize, respond, and refer human victims of domestic violence.

Veterinary professionals have a key role in facilitating multi-agency collaboration to prevent and respond to domestic violence (DV) in situations where animals may be directly or indirectly involved. Yet despite their position as potential touchpoints for victim-survivors with animals, many veterinary professionals do not feel equipped to act on suspicions or disclosures of DV. In response to this identified need, one service operating in Melbourne, Australia, developed the Vet-3R's training program (Recognize-Respond-Refer) which was piloted on 65 veterinary professionals in Melbourne's Eastern Metropolitan Region. This is an exploratory study aimed at measuring the effect of the Vets 3-R's program on veterinary professionals' confidence and capacity to recognize, respond and refer victims of DV. Participants were invited to complete online surveys before and after the training to evaluate their understanding of DV and their capacity to support suspected victim-survivors with animals who present at their service. The pre-training self-evaluation scores indicated that while most veterinary professionals are aware of the link between animal abuse and DV, they lack the confidence to respond and refer individuals when confronted with suspicions or disclosures of abuse. However, upon completion of the Vets 3-R's program, participants reported marked improvements in their ability to recognize, respond, and refer victim-survivors. The most significant improvement could be seen in participants' self-reported ability to respond appropriately to suspicions of DV. While results are indicative only due to the small sample size, this study suggests that veterinary professionals may be an underutilized intervention point for DV victim-survivors with animals. The Vet-3R's training program can be a useful tool for increasing effectiveness of this intervention point to safely assist DV victim-survivors. More research on similar programs with a larger cohort of participants would be beneficial to measure the impact of such programs on a wider scale.

"Safety Is Elusive:" A Critical Discourses Analysis of Newspapers' Reporting of Domestic Violence During the Coronavirus Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated incidences of domestic violence (DV). The framing of DV within media sources contributes to the public's understanding of DV. Using critical discourse analysis (CDA), this paper explores representations of safety within newspapers' reporting of DV during the pandemic. The sample included newspaper articles (n = 31) from U.S. newspapers. The analysis involved multiple rounds of coding and employing "structured questions." These articles depicted limited courses of action for DV survivors and represented safety as unattainable. Safety was constructed in four ways: homes are unsafe, social services are overburdened, government failures, and the elusiveness of safety. These discursive formations provide insight regarding "idealized" social responses to DV.

Adherence to stereotypes as a prerequisite for acceptance of the situation of domestic violence in civil and military university students

The article is devoted to the study of the degree of acceptance of gender stereotypes in the professional and private fields as a factor that increases the likelihood of accepting a situation of domestic violence both as an aggressor and as a victim. The article analyzes approaches to understanding domestic violence in sociological, psychological, and philosophical schools. Domestic violence is considered by the author as a manifestation of social inequality, leading to the criminalization of family relations, a decrease in the level of social and personal security, and the formation of helplessness among victims of family aggression. The concepts of social and gender stereotype are revealed, the structure and typology of social stereotypes are described. Summarizing the experience of working in the Tver crisis center, the author gives a description of the characteristic features of a victim of domestic violence, among which most are adherents of gender stereotypes. The article describes a study aimed at studying the degree of adherence to gender stereotypes among young people studying in the civil and military spheres and conducted with the help of a questionnaire compiled by the author. The empirical basis of the study is a survey of girls and young people from Tver and Moscow (226 people). The analysis of the obtained data showed that in the male and female samples there is a high degree of acceptance of traditional ideas about gender-role behavior, which, according to the author, can be the basis for accepting the situation of domestic violence as a model of family relations and its transmission in the next generations. According to the author, one of the important directions of combating gender stereotypes and increasing the level of social equality in Russian society can be training courses on the problems of domestic violence. The above research results and their analysis will be useful to practitioners in the field of helping professions, state and social institutions.

We do not take this for granted because for years we each experienced physical violence in our homes. We are the victims and survivors of domestic violence.1 We are referred to and defined by these terms in court documents; in state services; counseling; and by friends, family, and colleagues. These terms impact our own understandings of domestic violence and living after getting out of abuse. I was a victim. I am a survivor. However, these terms do not always fit how we feel or how we see our situations and the requirements to fit these terms have caused us to stumble, withdraw, or scream with despair. Victim. Survivor. The words have such distinct meanings and evoke specific states of being. Yet living with and after domestic violence never feels this concise. The timeline between victim and survivor slides across each term and any number of things can trigger us to embrace or reject either term, while we simultaneously embrace our surviving and our strengths. We met in a counseling group for women navigating life after getting out of domestic violence.2 The group had fourteen to twenty participants with two-thirds identifying as women of color.3 Most had all been in long-term [End Page 146] domestic partnerships or marriages with men, some with women,4 most of us had children, and we ranged in age from thirty-four to sixty-two. We were at various stages of getting out—some living separately from their abuser for a few months, some a year; some divorced, some in limbo, some in ongoing legal battles; some with sole custody of children, some with visitation; some in temporary housing, some in rental apartments or homes, some living in the house where abuse occurred. We all worked full time in business, customer service, finance, medical, nursing, teaching, or technology professions and earn middle income.5 The similarities in experiences of the women in this group were striking and the five of us found strength and sadness in these similarities. Strength because we recognized ourselves in each other and sadness because if such similarities exist surely things could be done to prevent or shorten the time anyone experiences domestic violence. The short form reflective narratives and prose in this colloquium were written with these emotions and impetus. This colloquium arose from our relations of commonalities and differences as five middle-income, racially diverse women (Black, Latina, multiracial, and white) who were in domestic violence relationships with men. We are women with privileges—privileges of professional job security and middle-income access to resources. Yet, while attempting to get out of domestic violence, we each experienced difficultly being seen and heard and continue to face challenges living after getting out. A cursory look at research on domestic violence service provision may provide insight to our difficulties. Although a “Third Women’s Caucus” was formed in 1978 to focus on structural barriers intersectional women of color faced in accessing domestic violence services (Allen 1985; Arnold and Perkins 1984–1985; Rasche 1988; Zambrano 1985; Williams 1981), domestic violence research has not fully embraced the necessity of an intersectional approach (Decker et al. 2019; Donnelly et al. 2005). Recent research points to the “subtle ways in which white privilege affects services to battered women of color” (Donnelly et al. 2005, 31). In reference to Black women, Kenney (2021) writes “there is limited research that examines how, if, and to what extent counselors’ cultural competence informs their interventions with African American women to encourage positive therapeutic alliances with those victims” (1). It is hard to find research focused on racially diverse women, even harder to find diverse middle-income women’s experiences of domestic violence, and most domestic violence research assumes heteronormativity. Introduction to Special Issue: Domestic Violence in Black Communities

ABSTRACT Violence against women and domestic violence within families is a well-documented, internationally recognized social and public health problem that disproportionately impacts Black communities. The purpose of this special issue is to “widen the lens” by expanding the research on domestic violence in Black communities. This double issue is divided into six themes: (1) Overview of the research: past, present, and future; (2) Exploring ethnicities: Violence across the Diaspora; (3) Mental and physical health consequences; (4) Family Violence; (5) Institutional and Structural Violence; and (6) Culturally sensitive treatment. The authors in this special issue have proposed innovative models and frameworks and have endeavored to broaden our understanding of domestic violence by utilizing a variety of methodologies, including semi-structured in-depth interviews, case histories, and systematic research reviews. Regarding suggestions for future research, the authors in this Special Issue emphasize the importance of data-driven discourse on gender-based violence in Black communities.

Domestic Violence and Immigrant Women: A Glimpse Behind a Veiled Door.

Domestic violence (DV) experienced by immigrant women is a public health concern. In collaboration with a community agency, researchers undertook a retrospective review of 1,763 client files from 2006–2014. The three aims were to document the incidence of DV, service needs associated with DV, and identification of risk factors associated with DV in the extracted file data. About 41% reported DV and required multiple services. Separated and divorced women, and women on visitor/temporary visas showed the highest risk. The results underscore the value of research partnerships with community-based service agencies in increasing our understanding of DV among immigrant women.

Understandings and Perceptions of Domestic Violence Among Newly Arrived Afghan Women in Australia.

Women's perceptions of domestic violence vary across societies and cultures and might change by moving to a new society. This study aims to explore newly arrived Afghan women's understandings and perceptions of domestic violence and whether they perceive this as acceptable. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 newly arrived Afghan women in Australia. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed inductively to generate and organize themes. The findings showed that informants had a sound knowledge and understanding of domestic violence, and many of them identified various forms of violence. Also, informants strongly rejected that violence against women be considered normal or acceptable.

Experiences of Divorced Women Subject to Domestic Violence in Turkey.

This study examines the experiences of divorced women who were subjected to domestic violence from their former spouses. The purpose of this study includes investigating violence in marital life and post-divorce, coping strategies for survival and external factors that empower/disempower women based on their life experiences. The study uses qualitative research methods. The data are retrieved from qualitative interviews with 13 women who were exposed to domestic violence while they were married and after their divorce. The participants were divorced through either informal or formal divorce procedures. Five themes emerged from the study: how to seek help, the endless circle of violence, divorce and family oppression, coping strategies, and awareness raising. The study shows that, during the divorce process, the participant women became more empowered and adopted better coping strategies than in the pre-divorce period. The study provides an understanding of domestic violence in the post-divorce phase. This research reveals the continuation of partner violence even after divorce.

Rhetorical and Organizational Typification of Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Stalking as Discrete Forms of Violence

Abstract Despite constructions of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking as discrete forms of violence, research shows that violence often co-occurs. Victims experiencing multiple forms of violence require different interventions from victims experiencing only one. Service providers’ understandings of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking as discrete, then, potentially undermine their goal of effective intervention. Drawing on 26 months of participant observation in an anti-gender-based violence nonprofit organization, I explore how advocates construct each form of violence as independent from the others. Results show that both organizational features, such as training curricula and organizational jurisdictions, and rhetorical strategies, such as an under-emphasis on co-occurring violence, contribute to the construction of each type of violence as discrete. This paper is of interest to researchers, practitioners, and policymakers committed to designing and implementing effective responses to gender-based violence. I also advance social problems theory, showing that organizational features, not just interactional processes, contribute to typification.

Utilising Survivor Stories in Domestic Abuse Education for Medical Students.

Background 1 in 4 women will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime, potentially leading to physical, psychological, and social problems. There has been increasing research showing doctors need to improve identification of domestic abuse and respond appropriately upon disclosure. There is growing evidence for patient-based teaching, using experiences to increase understanding, empathy, and exposure for students. Methods We retrospectively compared student feedback on an existing lecture and domestic abuse videos given to 5 th year medical students in their obstetrics and gynaecology placement, to a format involving the original lecture and videos plus a survivor in person discussing her story. Results 109 students returned questionnaires. The results showed an improvement overall in 2017 across all questions. In 2017 95.5% of the students strongly agreed that the session improved their understanding of domestic violence, compared to 50% in 2014. In 2017 90.1% of students strongly agreed the session was interesting compared to 48.7% in 2014. Qualitative data recorded positive comments such as "Personal account of DA in the group was really eye-opening, and I feel this really improved my understanding." Discussion Engaging survivors of domestic abuse could help improve teaching and improve understanding in medical students.

Digital Education of Health Professionals on the Management of Domestic Violence: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis by the Digital Health Education Collaboration

BackgroundThe World Health Organization states that 35% of women experience domestic violence at least once during their lifetimes. However, approximately 80% of health professionals have never received any training on management of this major public health concern.ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of health professions digital education on domestic violence compared to that of traditional ways or no intervention.MethodsSeven electronic databases were searched for randomized controlled trials from January 1990 to August 2017. The Cochrane Handbook guideline was followed, and studies reporting the use of digital education interventions to educate health professionals on domestic violence management were included.ResultsSix studies with 631 participants met our inclusion criteria. Meta-analysis of 5 studies showed that as compared to control conditions, digital education may improve knowledge (510 participants and 5 studies; standardized mean difference [SMD] 0.67, 95% CI 0.38-0.95; I2=59%; low certainty evidence), attitudes (339 participants and 3 studies; SMD 0.67, 95% CI 0.25-1.09; I2=68%; low certainty evidence), and self-efficacy (174 participants and 3 studies; SMD 0.47, 95% CI 0.16-0.77; I2=0%; moderate certainty evidence).ConclusionsEvidence of the effectiveness of digital education on health professionals’ understanding of domestic violence is promising. However, the certainty of the evidence is predominantly low and merits further research. Given the opportunity of scaled transformative digital education, both further research and implementation within an evaluative context should be prioritized.

Domestic violence against children and adolescents is a public health issue, as it jeopardizes development. The purpose of this study was to identify parents 'or guardians' understanding of domestic violence. Descriptive method that sought evidence through the application of a questionnaire used by Biscegli et al. (2008). The results were analyzed by Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests, in which the parents or guardians would never agree to any punishment by the employees, 46.9% agree that the best way would be conversation and 85% that the spanking impairs the relationship. Of the respondents with more than two children, 88.2% believe that cursing the child causes harm, but for those with two or less, this rate drops to 50%. We conclude that the guardians of the children demonstrated a satisfactory level of knowledge about child violence but did not discard the cultural influence and the possibility of practicing certain types of violence.
