Analysis of Soil Slope Stability under Underground Coal Seam Mining Using Improved Radial Movement Optimization with Lévy Flight

Underground coal seam mining significantly reduces the stability of slopes, especially soil slopes, and an accurate evaluation of the stability of soil slopes under underground mining conditions is crucial for mining safety. In this study, the impact of coal seam mining is considered as the additional horizontal and vertical stresses acting on the slope, and an equation for calculating the safety factor of soil slopes under underground mining conditions is derived based on the rigorous Janbu method. Then, the Improved Radial Movement Optimization (IRMO) algorithm is introduced and combined with Lévy flight optimization to conduct global optimization searches, obtaining the critical sliding surface and corresponding safety factor of the soil slope under underground coal seam mining. Through comparisons with the numerical simulation results in three different case studies, the feasibility of applying the IRMO algorithm with Lévy flight to analyze the stability of soil slopes under underground mining is demonstrated. This ensures the accuracy and stability of the calculation results while maintaining a high convergence efficiency. Furthermore, the effects of the mining thickness and mining direction on slope stability are analyzed, and the results indicate that a smaller mining thickness and mining along the slope are advantageous for slope stability. The method proposed in this study provides valuable insights for preventing the slope instability hazards caused by underground coal seam mining.

Underground Mine Safety and Health: A Hybrid MEREC-CoCoSo System for the Selection of Best Sensor.

This research addresses the paramount issue of enhancing safety and health conditions in underground mines through the selection of optimal sensor technologies. A novel hybrid MEREC-CoCoSo system is proposed, integrating the strengths of the MEREC (Method for Eliciting Relative Weights) and Combined Compromise Solution (CoCoSo) methods. The study involves a three-stage framework: criteria and sensor discernment, criteria weight determination using MEREC, and sensor prioritization through the MEREC-CoCoSo framework. Fifteen criteria and ten sensors were identified, and a comprehensive analysis, including MEREC-based weight determination, led to the prioritization of "Ease of Installation" as the most critical criterion. Proximity sensors were identified as the optimal choice, followed by biometric sensors, gas sensors, and temperature and humidity sensors. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed MEREC-CoCoSo model, a rigorous comparison was conducted with established methods, including VIKOR, TOPSIS, TODIM, ELECTRE, COPRAS, EDAS, and TRUST. The comparison encompassed relevant metrics such as accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity, providing a comprehensive understanding of the proposed model's performance in relation to other established methodologies. The outcomes of this comparative analysis consistently demonstrated the superiority of the MEREC-CoCoSo model in accurately selecting the best sensor for ensuring safety and health in underground mining. Notably, the proposed model exhibited higher accuracy rates, increased sensitivity, and improved specificity compared to alternative methods. These results affirm the robustness and reliability of the MEREC-CoCoSo model, establishing it as a state-of-the-art decision-making framework for sensor selection in underground mine safety. The inclusion of these actual results enhances the clarity and credibility of our research, providing valuable insights into the superior performance of the proposed model compared to existing methodologies. The main objective of this research is to develop a robust decision-making framework for optimal sensor selection in underground mines, with a focus on enhancing safety and health conditions. The study seeks to identify and prioritize critical criteria for sensor selection in the context of underground mine safety. The research strives to contribute to the mining industry by offering a structured and effective approach to sensor selection, prioritizing safety and health in underground mining operations.

Hybrid method for analyzing air thermal conditions in underground mines

Thermal prediction of underground mine air is required to develop control measures against heat problems. Researchers have extensively studied this topic using numerical simulations; however, these require long processing times. Recently, researchers have begun using artificial intelligence algorithms; however, the predictive capabilities of the model are still limited because an intelligent system is formed from field measurement data. This study presents a fast and accurate prediction of the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) in underground mines using a hybrid integrated numerical method and an adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) method. The mine air thermal conditions in various scenarios were analyzed by numerical simulation, and the results were utilized to develop intelligence for ANFIS model-based predictors. A case study was conducted in two underground gold mine areas to demonstrate the effectiveness of this method. The ANFIS model was trained and tested with 81 scenarios generated from numerical simulations. Accurate predictors were obtained, with a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.98 and 0.97. In addition to predicting the WBGT, the developed ANFIS model optimized the selection of the auxiliary fan power, minimizing the power consumption while simultaneously providing a comfortable WBGT.

A complex method for preventing collisions between mining equipment and personnel in mine conditions

The article provides an analysis of low-frequency and high-frequency methods for determining the distance between mobile equipment and personnel for the purpose of preventing collisions in difficult mine conditions. The authors assessed the influence of the geology of mine workings, the earth’s surface and transport on the electromagnetic field of the VLF, LF and C range. From the analysis, a combined design solution was derived for determining the distance in surface and underground mining conditions. The proposed methods for registering the proximity of objects compensate for each other’s vulnerabilities and make it possible to implement an integrated approach to preventing collisions of mining equipment with personnel.

Optimal Backfilling Materials with High Compressive Strength Based on Multiple Linear Regression

Backfilling material such as tailing (mine wastes) mixing with cement or gypsum has grown throughout the world’s underground mines. However, despite their growing popularity, the typical hydraulic and mechanical fill types utilized in many mines still exist. Deep underground mining has increased due to the lack of commercial minerals nearby. Mine wastes were considered the main part of backfilling to prevent environmental pollution, ground subsidence after mine abandonment, and mine collapse during deeper extraction phases. The cemented backfill technique is the principal technique used in underground mines, which include cement with fly ash and/or filter dust, cement with tailing material and fly ash, gypsum with fly ash, and synthetic anhydrite with fly ash and have been reviewed. It has concluded that a backfilling material must be selected based on further goals, available material near the mine site, and economic factors. This paper analyzes different backfill material mixtures to create a technique that will increase safety in underground mining conditions and foresees an appropriate formula that gives high uniaxial compressive strength. The multiple linear regression (MLR) on the collected data from the experimental works to construct the relationship between the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of the mixture and the components of the backfilling and the prediction formula for expected compressive strength was obtained. The results revealed that the predicted regression equation was robust and reliable to predict the (UCS) for the new components of the filling (cement (CE), filter dust (FD), water content (WC), and time (T)).

Determinants of prioritised influencing factors on coal spontaneous combustion propensity – A Fuzzy-Delphi-geometric mean analytic hierarchy process

One of the most common hazards in coal mines is spontaneous combustion, a significant cause of coal loss in underground mines. Specifying a suitable approach for the determinants of prioritized influencing factors on coal spontaneous combustion propensity is challenging. There needs to be more research that directly addresses the uncertainty of human judgement in assessing the factors influencing coal propensity to self-combustion. This is the first attempt to address the aforesaid problem by ranking the factors influencing spontaneous coal combustion. The ranking was performed using the Fuzzy Delphi Analytic Hierarchy Process (FDAHP) with two variants of the Geometric Mean Method (GMM), which enabled the analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data related to the rating of each factor influencing spontaneous combustion risk and the relative importance of each factor related to coal seam characteristics, geological aspects, mining practices, and environmental aspects. The results show that ‘GMM as a whole’ is a comparatively best-aggregating approach to the AHP process. The presented case study of using this methodology in underground mine conditions confirms its efficacy in assessing susceptibility to coal spontaneous combustion. This mainly concerns the pace and reliability of the obtained results and the determination of risk evaluation system based on intrinsic and extrinsic factors influencing susceptibility to spontaneous combustion of coal. Finally, this systematic technique was validated in the research area by utilizing spontaneous combustion incident that occurred in Jharia and Raniganj coalfields, which revealed rather excellent concordance in Jharia and Raniganj coalfields. The study can be used in mine planning to develop engineering data to select the operational parameter and prevent the initiation of spontaneous heating by identifying intrinsic factors and optimizing extrinsic factors.

Determining and Verifying the Operating Parameters of Suppression Nozzles for Belt Conveyor Drives

Drives in belt conveyors are critical components of the conveyor system, susceptible to various factors that can cause disruptions and energy losses. In underground mining conditions, the risk of drive fires is particularly hazardous. Therefore, it is necessary to develop highly effective fire suppression systems. However, there are no guidelines for designing such systems. This study presents a methodology for selecting and verifying the fire suppression systems for belt conveyor drives. The proposed AMIGA system for extinguishing fires on underground coal mine conveyor belts, incorporating spraying and water mist installations, is supported by a theoretical calculation methodology. This enables determining the number of required nozzles and flow rate for complete fire suppression. The development of a methodology for the selection and verification of the sprinkler system components utilized guidelines provided in the standard VdS 2109:2002-03 and the PN-EN 12845+A2 standard from 2010, while a novel approach is proposed for water mist parameters that has not been previously applied anywhere else, and is based on assessing the fire’s intensity and the persistent disruption of the energy balance of the combusted coal. The theoretical calculations for potential fire power facilitate the determination of the appropriate water flow rate for the spraying system to protect the upper belt drive. For the proposed AMIGA system, the potential fire power was calculated to be 10.33MJ/min. Based on this, the water flow rate for the spraying installation to protect the upper drive belt of the conveyor was established to be a minimum 37.5dm3/min, and 21.4dm3/min for the mist installation used to protect the space below the conveyor drive. In order to verify the developed methodology for parameter selection, on-site tests were conducted to verify the results. Tests were conducted on an AMIGA prototype suppression system integrated into a conveyor drive. The results demonstrate that the developed system is effective in extinguishing fires on the belt using the spraying installation, as well as under the conveyor belt drive using the water mist installation, within the entire supply pressure range ( 0.4MPa to 1.6MPa ).

A novel temperature compensation approach of IR gas sensors in coal mines

Infrared spectrum analysis is a technical method for quantitative analysis of coal mine gases. However, current infrared (IR) gas sensors are significantly affected by the change of ambient temperature. In this study, experimental research was carried out in the hope of improving the accuracy and applicability of IR gas sensors. Firstly, a test platform whose functions could support sensor temperature compensation experiments was built. The accuracy of sensors without temperature compensation was calculated under the concentrations CO2 of (0.5%, 1%, and 2.43%), CH4 concentrations of (0.1%, 1%, and 4.0%), and CO concentrations of (10 × 10−6, 100 × 10−6, and 500 × 10−6). The calculation results show that the errors are 1.4%∼2.0%, (3,000∼5,000) × 10−6, and (50∼160) × 10−6, respectively, which fail to meet the requirements for error ranges. Secondly, the constant temperature heating test of sensors was carried out in the temperature range of (25–55)℃, and the optimal heating temperature was determined to be 45℃. Then, the accuracy of sensors after temperature compensation was calculated again under the same CO2, CH4 and CO concentrations at 45℃. The results reveal that the errors are only 0∼0.045%, 0∼900 × 10−6, and 0∼9 × 10−6, respectively, which are better than the results before temperature compensation. Thirdly, with the temperature in the high-low temperature test chamber set as (-20∼45)℃, it is found that the errors remain huge. Considering the highly variable temperature conditions in underground coal mines, the genetic algorithm-back propagation (GA-BP) neural network model was established for error analysis. For CO2, CH4, and CO, the mean absolute errors (MAEs) of the GA-BP neural network model are 62.7%, 26.9% and 29.1% lower than those of the back propagation (BP) neural network model, respectively. In summary, this study obtained the appropriate heating range of IR gas sensors, established the error optimization model under different ambient temperature conditions, and provided a technical foundation for the construction of the in-situ on-line monitoring system for coal mine gases.

IOT Powered Smart Strata Monitoring System for early and precise detection of Convergence in Underground Coal Mines

Roof fall, bed separation and convergence are one of the serious life-threatening problems faced by the miners in all the underground coal mines since early mining age to current mining situations. Most of the statistics regarding fatal accidents and trapped miners in underground coal mines are the results of sudden roof fall due to bed separation of overlying strata in the underground mine galleries or roadways. In Indian underground coal mines, many of fatalities were seen over the years although this rate has been gradually decreasing since past decade only by implementing some of physical and mechanical methods to detect or monitor strata convergence. With the advancement of technology, sensors become an extensive part of everyday life. Various researchers are trying to monitor, detect and prevent fatalities due to roof fall in real time scenario in underground coal mines with the use of sensors, IOT and other technology. The main aim is to Install a non-invasive laser proximity sensor in the hole drilled into the roof where the necessity arises to remotely monitor the convergence in the strata under bad roof conditions in underground coal mines and monitor them remotely with an automated display showing the details of the bed separation, roof convergence and detailed information about the roof condition remotely. Selection of the means of auxiliary transportation facilities and adaptation of their parameters to specific operation conditions

Purpose. To improve selection methods of operation schedules as well as means of auxiliary transportation facilities involving adaptation of their parameters to the specific application environment while preparing new extraction pillars for coal mining. Methodology. The current methods for substantiating the operational parameters of the means of internal mine transport do not take into account the impact of mining-geological and technological factors, which change inadequately in space and time, on their productivity. The recommended method for selecting transport and technological schemes and increasing their adaptability in the real conditions of the mine environment is based on the comprehensive use of methods of expert evaluation of the operational indicators of the new generation of auxiliary transport means and modeling of the conditions of their interaction with arch support and side rocks at the stages of mining and their operation when preparing new mining pillars for cleaning mining. Findings. The expert evaluation concerning technological features of mining field preparation as well as assembling and dismantling operations has determined that for the specific conditions of Western Donbas mines, the suspended diesel monorail locomotive and self-propelled machines are the most promising options. Gear clutch rail diesel locomotives are recommended as the auxiliary transport for the accelerated preparation of extraction pillar and introduction of a longwall into operation. Originality. New approaches have been substantiated to improve selection of the efficient means of auxiliary transportation facilities and identify their operational parameters for the well-timed preparation of extraction pillars for their removal under the intensified underground mining conditions. A transportation schedule has been proposed to supply heavy tonnage loads by means of the suspended diesel rail locomotives as well as methods to calculate the expected loads on suspension members of the monorail road taking into consideration physico-mechanical characteristics of roof rocks within a development mine working. Practical value. It has been proved that under the conditions of the intensified mining operations, the recommended engineering solutions meet the requirements of the well-timed preparation of new extraction pillars. In addition, they are considered as a new tendency to improve current schemes of auxiliary transportation facilities for regional mines and provide operational reliability of the available underground transport equipment.

Development of Autonomous Driving Patrol Robot for Improving Underground Mine Safety

To improve the working conditions in underground mines and eliminate the risk of human casualties, patrol robots that can operate autonomously are necessary. This study developed an autonomous patrol robot for underground mines and conducted field experiments at underground mine sites. The driving robot estimated its own location and autonomously operated via encoders, IMUs, and LiDAR sensors; it measured hazards using gas sensors, dust particle sensors, and thermal imaging cameras. The developed autonomous driving robot can perform waypoint-based path planning. It can also automatically return to the starting point after driving along waypoints sequentially. In addition, the robot acquires the dust and gas concentration levels along with thermal images and then combines them with location data to create an environmental map. The results of the field experiment conducted in an underground limestone mine in Korea are as follows. The O2 concentration was maintained at a constant level of 15.7%; toxic gases such as H2S, CO, and LEL were not detected; and thermal imaging data showed that humans could be detected. The maximum dust concentration in the experimental area was measured to be about 0.01 mg/m3, and the dust concentration was highly distributed in the 25–35 m section on the environmental map. This study is expected to improve the safety of work by exploring areas that are dangerous for humans to access using autonomous patrol robots and to improve productivity by automating exploration tasks.

Decision-Making Method for Mine Cable Insulation Monitoring and Grounding Fault Diagnosis

Real-time monitoring of the power cable state has tremendous significance for ensuring the safe and economic operation of mine power distribution systems. However, due to the harsh conditions of underground coal mines, it is difficult for the cable monitoring system operating in underground coal mines to carry out large-scale calculations to diagnose the grounding fault of the cable. Additionally, there are many types of cable grounding faults, such as single grounding fault and two-phase ground fault. Therefore, how to determine the type of grounding fault quickly through effective calculations and alarms to select the grounding cable is always a difficult task. In this study, to reduce the complexity of cable insulation state classification, we develop a novel classification method based on the decision tree algorithm. Concerning the zero-sequence network under different insulation conditions, the first calculation’s positive and negative values were generated to identify whether the cable insulation was symmetrical. Then, the insulation degradation phase is identified by the relationship between the three-phase voltage phase angle and the current difference variation between the beginning and end of the line. By substituting the correlation quantities collected by a wide-area synchronous measurement system into different equations, the whole grid’s decision tree was constructed in different insulation states. Then, the insulation state of each line was evaluated according to the conductance value. The effectiveness of the proposed method was verified using a 35/6 kV mine power distribution system model based on the MATLAB/Simulink platform. The test results illustrate that the method can accurately diagnose the power cable insulation state based on the decision tree of whether the grid three-phase loads operate in an ungrounded mode or not.

Numerical Simulation and Application of Transient Electromagnetic Detection Method in Mine Water-Bearing Collapse Column Based on Time-Domain Finite Element Method

Mine floods caused by water-bearing collapse columns are one of the most significant types of coal mine disasters in advanced detection. The transient electromagnetic method (TEM), one of the most effective means, can detect the collapse column in coal mines. However, the research on TEM used on the ground is mainly limited to half-space that does not follow underground mining conditions. This research used the whole-space TEM to detect the water-bearing collapse columns in front of the roadway. Based on the time-domain finite element method (TDFEM) and actual coal-measure strata data, this paper built the whole-space geo-electric models, summarized response characteristics, and proposed “geometric gravity center” effect. The results showed that the simulation based on TDFEM could accurately reflect the TEM response law, and the advanced detection using TEM in a mine environment was consistent with the actual situation.

A Path Planning Method for Underground Intelligent Vehicles Based on an Improved RRT* Algorithm

Path planning is one of the key technologies for unmanned driving of underground intelligent vehicles. Due to the complexity of the drift environment and the vehicle structure, some improvements should be made to adapt to underground mining conditions. This paper proposes a path planning method based on an improved RRT* (Rapidly-Exploring Random Tree Star) algorithm for solving the problem of path planning for underground intelligent vehicles based on articulated structure and drift environment conditions. The kinematics of underground intelligent vehicles are realized by vectorized map and dynamic constraints. The RRT* algorithm is selected for improvement, including dynamic step size, steering angle constraints, and optimal tree reconnection. The simulation case study proves the effectiveness of the algorithm, with a lower path length, lower node count, and 100% steering angle efficiency.

Fuzzy Risk-Based Maintenance Strategy with Safety Considerations for the Mining Industry.

Enterprises today are increasingly seeking maintenance management strategies to ensure that their machines run faultlessly. This problem is particularly relevant in the mining sector, due to the demanding working conditions of underground mines and machines and equipment-operating regimes. Therefore, in this article, the authors proposed a new approach to mining machinery maintenance management, based on the concept of risk-based maintenance (RBM) and taking into account safety issues. The proposed method includes five levels of analysis, of which the first level focuses on hazard analysis, while the next three are connected with a risk evaluation. The final level relates to determining the RBM recommendations. The recommendations are defined in relation to the three main improvement areas: maintenance, safety, and resource availability/allocation. The proposed approach is based on the use of fuzzy logic. To present the possibilities of implementing our method, a case study covering the operation of selected mining machinery in a selected Polish underground mine is presented. In the case of mining machinery, fourteen adverse-event scenarios were identified and investigated; general recommendations were also given. The authors have also indicated further directions of research work to optimize system maintenance strategies, based on the concept of risk-based maintenance. Additionally, the discussion about the implementation possibilities of the approach developed herein is provided.

СУЧАСНИЙ СТАН МЕХАНООЗБРОЄНОСТІ ГІРНИЧОРЯТУВАЛЬНОЇ (АВАРІЙНО-РЯТУВАЛЬНОЇ) СЛУЖБИ ТА ЙОГО ЗНАЧЕННЯ У ПІДВИЩЕННІ БЕЗПЕКИ ПРАЦІ ГІРНИКІВ

Purpose. To obtain reasonable characteristics of mobile means of mine-rescue equipment used in emergencies in underground mining to deliver it to the scene and evacuate injured personnel, which comprehensively increases efficiency and safety of work of both rescuers and miners. Methodology. Analysis of literary sources, technical documentation and the practice of using mining rescue equipment in the conditions of underground mining. Results. The analysis of the physical (energy) losses of rescuers during reconnaissance, emergency rescue operations, liquidation of the consequences of accidents, and the conducted research have allowed us to determine the technical characteristics of mobile means for delivering mine rescue equipment to the accident site and evacuating the victims of the accident through horizontal and vertical mine workings. The performed works have made it possible significantly increase the level of emergency protection of mining enterprises and occupational safety of miners, facilitate the work of personnel and, ultimately, the improve efficiency and reliability of the entire mining rescue service. Scientific novelty. The article proves that only a comprehensive approach to the development of mobile mining rescue equipment can provide an effective technological solution in the development of such equipment. Practical significance. Special vehicles developed for mining rescue units are suitable for operation in underground mining conditions. New technical solutions make it possible to transport rescue equipment in horizontal and vertical mines, which saves time and the health of mine rescuers. Developed and tested emergency and rescue technical means intended for mechanization during emergency and rescue operations in vertical shafts of mines, as well as during the performance by mine rescuers of technological works related to the inspection of the condition, for example, of ventilation shafts of mines that are not equipped with mechanized lifts. The reception commission confirmed the functionality of the developed equipment, its compliance with its intended purpose, and recommended the developed equipment for mass implementation both at enterprises and in units of the paramilitary mining and rescue service.

Monitoring of Roof Bolting as an Element of the Project of the Introduction of Roof Bolting in Polish Coal Mines—Case Study

Roof bolting is the most popular type of support for underground mines’ workings. However, in Polish coal mines it is used only as a supplementary support. To raise the effectiveness and economic score of horizontal development works, JSW (Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa) started a project to introduce the independent rock bolting support in its mines. The key element of the project is the monitoring of mine workings supported with roof bolting, as appropriate control allows one to ensure a proper level of safety. The following work presents a monitoring system for mine working supported with roof bolting applied in the project, as well as results of the measurements obtained using this system. The aim of the monitoring was to prove that independent roof bolting provides a proper level of safety and thus is applicable in conditions of Polish underground coal mines, particularly Budryk mine. It was to be proved by the evaluation of data obtained from instrumented bolts, extensometers of different type and convergence measurements. These results allowed us to verify the validity and reliability of the roof bolting in geological and mining conditions of Silesian Coal Basin.

Solutions to improve microclimate conditions for longwall in Mong Duong coal mine

Microclimate conditions of underground coal mines are important factors affecting comfortable and safe working conditions for miners. The microclimate depends on the ventilation airflow parameters such as wind temperature, humidity and wind speed. Currently, Mong Duong coal mine is exploiting -250 m level and preparing for -400 m level. The strata temperature is about 320C, the heat dissipation from mining equipment, coal transporting and the mined space has increased the temperature at the CGH L7 longwall of the Mong Duong coal mine. The air temperature of the longwall greater than 300C, the humidity of 95÷100%, exceed the allowable standard, leading to the longwall is closed, affecting workers' health and labor productivity. Traditionally, ventilation method has been used to remove heat to ensure a safe working environment underground. However, when the ventilation system cannot provide suitable climatic conditions for underground workers, a cooling system is required. Selection of the most suitable cooling method depends on the intensity of the heat to be removed, the mining method, the location of the high temperature areas. The article analyzes the current state of microclimate, the temperature distribution of the longwall, the causes of the increase in the temperature of the longwall and the cooling solutions in the underground mine and proposes solutions to use air conditioners to reduce temperature and improve microclimate conditions for the CGH L7 longwall at Mong Duong coal mine. Results after application for this longwall of Mong Duong coal mine are guaranteed according to QCVN 01/2011/BCT.

Application of mobile hydraulic anti - rigging complex in tunnels excavation and mining at the Mong Duong Coal Joint Stock Company - Vinacomin

The strategy for Vietnam's coal industry in the period to 2030 is to continuously increase the mining output. In particular, the structure of shifting to coal mining by underground method will be essential. However, the increase in underground mining output is affected by many factors. Currently and in the future, almost all underground coal mines in Vietnam must expand their mining areas, apply advanced technology, to meet the increase in mining output. However, a long - standing problem that the underground coal mines in Quang Ninh have not improved much is speeding up the digging. This is one of the problems causing congestion in production when it is necessary to increase production.
