Challenges of Topic Selection for Dissertation at the Undergraduate Level in Bangladesh

This research study dealt with the students’ challenges in selecting the topic of their undergraduate thesis. The study focused on the perceptions of the undergraduate students’ and their selection of a suitable research topic. The researchers have used the semi-structured questions for taking interviews in order to collect the data. Through the interview items, the study concentrated on the related inquiries. There were five participants who carry different CGPA grades. The research went on from one category to another and the data have been collected through the face-to-face interviews. The students’ interview provided the researchers with an explanation of their level of confidence in relation to their conviction in choosing their thesis topics. The study revealed the conceptualizations regarding the challenges of the students for selecting a good research topic. The researchers expected that this research study would explore the strategies of the students which support the beginners to choose a thesis topic. The researchers conducted interviews at a university campus to attain the understanding of struggling points of the undergraduate students while choosing their thesis topic for dissertation course.

Abstract Formative processes to strengthen Food Security and Nutrition (FSN) are demanded by the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP). Our objective was to describe and analyze the educational practices developed by teachers, aiming to reflect and propose adjustments to improve the distance formative process in FSN in the CPLP context (Brazil, Cape Verde, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe). This is applied research, with a qualitative approach and a descriptive and explanatory nature, using video classes as study material, mainly based on Discursive Textual Analysis. The proposal indicates that courses of the same nature require: teacher education; recognition of students’ knowledge; insertion of dialogue in the video lessons; offering local activities capable of generating an understanding of the reality; creation of a sequence for the elaboration of the undergraduate thesis (UT); and writing UTs aimed at transforming reality.

AN ERROR ANALYSIS IN WRITING THESIS ABSTRACT OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

The goal of this study was to identify the different kinds of errors that were made by English Education Department students at KH. A. Wahab Hasbullah University of Jombang when they were writing their thesis abstracts. It also sought to understand why these errors could happen. This study concentrated on the thesis abstracts written by English education department undergrads. This study employed a descriptive qualitative methodology. Thirty undergraduate thesis abstract texts released in 2022 served as the research's source of data. Collection, identification, description, explanation, and evaluation of errors were the steps in the error analysis process. The method of data analysis was developed based on Corder's work, which was cited in (Nurdin & Sri Hartati, 2019). According to the results, undergrad students' mistakes included adding words, using the wrong terms, capitalizing, omitting words, spelling, punctuating, using the wrong tenses, and misusing word forms. These errors can be made in a variety of ways depending on their kind, and they can also result from carelessness, inadequate grasp of English grammar and vocabulary, and inter- and intra-lingual interference.

Cohesion and Coherence in Students' Thesis Abstract Writing

Final-year students should have the ability and competence to write, including in writing their thesis abstracts. Although short, abstract writing must pay attention to several things. One indicator of good writing is marked by using logical, consistent words that are easy to understand. This study aims to identify the types of cohesion (grammatical and lexical) and coherence in writing abstracts for final students of AKI University and whether they have fulfilled cohesive and coherent writing. This study analyzes 16 undergraduate thesis abstracts for the English Literature study program for the 2019-2022 and 2020-2021 academic years. This study uses qualitative and quantitative research methods to achieve this goal. The result shows that the students use lexical cohesion devices much more than grammatical ones. Unfortunately, neither substitution nor ellipsis devices were found. Even so, the students have pretty good competence in making cohesive abstracts. On the other hand, the results of the coherence analysis show that all students have a good understanding of using all aspects of coherence. But even though they use all aspects, not all students succeed in creating coherent writing wholly.

The focus of this research was to describe the addition errors detected in the writing of the thesis abstract, to figure out why they happened, and to figure out how they happened at the Department of English Education for Students at STKIP Al Maksum Langkat. This research revolves around the abstract of an undergraduate thesis from the English department. In this study, the descriptive qualitative method was applied. This study's data comes from ten abstract manuscripts of undergraduate thesis dissertations published in 2022. The steps in error analysis are collection, identification, description, explanation, and error evaluation. As illustrated by these statistics, the errors made by undergraduate students are additional words that can occur as a result of interlanguage interference, intralingual interference, insufficient command of English syntax and vocabulary.

 The development of the business for poultry needs, namely birds, has made the competition in this industry even more challenging. So, that Maleo SMEs can succeed in competition, they must try to create and retain customers to achieve the goal. The company must produce products that consumers want with attractive packaging and good quality. Thus it must be able to understand the behaviour of target consumers to increase product sales to SMEs. Maleo.
 This study aimed to determine the effect of packaging and product quality on product purchasing decisions at UKM Maleo, Lampung. This was done to solve the problem of how the business that has been run can continue to grow and run successfully in a competitive environment to achieve the desired profit.
 The type of research used in this research is quantitative research. A quantitative research method is one type of research whose specifications are systematic, planned and structured from the beginning to the making of the research design.
 The results of the research packaging have a negative and insignificant effect on purchasing decisions at UKM Maleo, Lampung. Product quality has a positive and significant effect on purchasing decisions at UKM Maleo, Lampung. Together, packaging and product qualitypositively and significantly impact purchasing decisions at UKM Maleo, Lampung.

Error Analysis on Noun Phrase in Students’ Undergraduate Theses

The aim of this research is (1) to analyze the components of noun phrase errors that are often made by students in the introduction parts of their undergraduate theses, (2) to analyze the types of noun phrase errors that are often made by students in the introduction parts of their undergraduate theses, (3) to find out the differences between noun phrase errors made students in the introduction parts of their undergraduate theses. The method used in this research was mix method. The instrument comprised observation and documentation. The result of this research was as follows: (1) the most dominant component of noun phrase error made by UPI and Unib students in the introduction parts was a head error, (2) the most dominant type of error in noun phrases made by UPI was addition error; however, the most dominant type of noun phrase errors among Unib students was omission error, (3) the number of noun phrase errors in Unib was higher than those in UPI. It is recommended that students improve their mastery of noun phrases, that lecturers teach students how to write the introduction well, specifically on noun phrases, and that next researchers investigate additional aspects of noun phrases.

Online Self-Regulated Learning Strategies in the Process of Writing Undergraduate Thesis: A Survey Study

This survey study aims to identify EFL undergraduate students’ online self-regulated learning strategies in the process of writing their undergraduate theses during COVID-19 pandemic. 97 senior students agreed to participate in this study. This study used a 24-item questionnaire adapted from Barnard et al. (2009) Online Self- Regulated Learning Questionnaire (OSLQ). The results revealed that the participants’ online self-regulated learning strategies in the process of writing their undergraduate theses from the highest to lowest mean score were: environment structuring, help-seeking, self-evaluation, goal setting, time management, and task strategies. Environment structuring had the highest average score, indicating that undergraduate English Education students were able to choose and arrange places for online learning to minimize distractions so that their learning could run optimally. However, the ability of self- regulated learning strategies in the task strategy domain had the lowest average score. The results displays that in the process of writing undergraduate theses, participants’ ability in task strategies needed to be improved. For further research, the researchers recommend further investigation on the relationship between undergraduate students’ motivation and ability in implementing their self-regulated online learning strategies in writing undergraduate thesis. Future research should also include metacognitive learning strategies and re-examine the relationship of undergraduate students’ online self-regulated learning strategies to their online learning performance in writing undergraduate theses.

The Factors Affecting Students’ Difficulties in Conducting Thesis at English Language Educational the University of Batanghari Jambi

This research was included in quantitative research which aims to find out the problems and factors experienced by students so that it affects their difficulties in completing the thesis. The subjects of this study were 19 students of the 2018 English Department of Batanghari Jambi University who had completed their thesis. This research collected data through questionnaires distributed online using Google form. In this research, three main factors are identified that affecting undergraduate thesis writing. First, psychological factors which include self-esteem, anxiety, and motivation. Furthermore, the second factor is socio-cultural factors which include the social distance among each student and the social distance between students and supervisors. Lastly, linguistic factors which include domain error analysis and extent of error analysis. The results showed that psychology factors got a percentage of 40.36%, socio-cultural factors got a percentage of 29.66%, and linguistic factors got a percentage of 29.96%. Thus, it can be concluded that the most influencing factor in the difficulty of students completing the thesis is the psychological factor.

Predictors of Supervisor’s Support for Students Writing their Undergraduate Dissertations in Moroccan Open-Access Higher Education Institutions

With Higher Education (HE) rapidly changing, Moroccan supervisors of undergraduate dissertations adopted online technologies in technology-impoverished open-access institutions. Online supervision, however, is hardly studied in educational settings facing technological adversities in terms of infrastructure and training, nor is the topic researched for what it tells about the supervisor’s role and the level of support students receive in such contexts. Using a regression model from questionnaire data (N = 90), the present work seeks to understand how supervisors’ role links to the support they receive from their institutions, the number of supervisees, their technological pedagogical competence, and their perception of the academic skills of students. Technological-pedagogical competence, the number of supervisees, and supervisors’ perceptions of students’ academic skills largely determine how supervisors fulfil their roles. In contrast, institutional support in terms of training and technology infrastructure seems unrelated to the process. The present work suggests a few ways UD supervision can be more effective and calls for a more in-depth understanding of all the factors that affect supervision and teaching practices in general before making decisions that will affect higher education in the future. The issue is of paramount importance as the country is poised to reform undergraduate programs and institutionalize distance learning in post-pandemic Higher Education.

Mindfulness and Fear of Missing Out in Final Year Undergraduate Students

Final year students often face difficulties such as working on repeated thesis revisions, getting relevant literature, length of feedback from supervisors, and limited research time. Those who use social media tend to experience Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) syndrome. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between mindfulness and FoMO in final year undergraduate students. This study used a correlational quantitative approach. Research participants consisted of 126 final year undergraduate students using purposive sampling. For data collection, two instruments were used: Mindfulness Scale (.847) and Fear of Missing Out Scale (.829). The data were analyzed using Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation. The results showed that there was a significant relationship between mindfulness and FoMO in final year students (Sig. .000 < .05). In addition, the direction of the relationship between the variables was negative (-.308), meaning that the relationship between the two variables was in negative correlation. This means that if the individual had a high state of mindfulness, the tendency to experience FoMO was low. In contrast, if the individual had a low state of mindfulness, then his/her tendency to experience FoMO was high.

Syntactic Errors Made by English Department Students in Writing Undergraduate Thesis Abstract

This study aims at identifying the types of syntactic errors committed in the undergraduate thesis abstracts as well as the factors contributing to the errors. This study applied a descriptive-qualitative approach with observation, documentation method and note-taking technique. The data source was 30 abstracts written by English Department students of Udayana University who graduated in the 2021 period. In identifying the type of errors, this study employed the surface strategy taxonomy theory proposed by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen. Moreover, in identifying the factor of errors, this study applies Brown’s theory, supported by a theory about the intralingual error by Richards. The finding shows that 467 errors are found in the students’ abstracts. Errors in all syntactic categories were found. However, six out of eight types of error based on surface strategy taxonomy were found. In terms of factor, all factors of error contributing to the errors. According to the discussion, it can be concluded that the major issue in writing abstracts is the student's inability to avoid mother tongue interference as an ESL learner. As a result, the point from the source language had been ambiguously transferred into the target language.

The Analysis of Racism toward African-American as seen in Selected Phillis Wheatley’s Poems

The issues of race, racism and discrimination always become the canter of the study of the African-American community, for example in literature. An example of African-American Literature that described those things is written by Phillis Wheatley. In her poems that were influenced by the Neoclassicism era, entitled: “On being brought from AFRICA to AMERICA'' and “To the Right Honourable William, Earl of Dartmouth”, she delivered the issues of race and racism. This paper aims to analyze racism toward African-America as described in Phillis Wheatley’s poems. The researcher employed a qualitative descriptive method in which the collected data were analyzed, interpreted, and described to answer the objective of the study. The primary data in this undergraduate thesis are two selected poems by Wheatley and the supporting data were taken from books, articles, journals, online sources, and other sources. The researcher applied African-American criticism to answer the objective of the research. The Researchers use three basic tenets of African-American criticism (Everyday Racism, The Social Construction of Race and Voice of color). The findings show Wheatley’s poems portray the life of an African American who experienced racism first-hand. The concept of racism in the two selected poems from Wheatley’s has correlation with 3 concepts of racism of African-American criticism, those are: Everyday racism, The Social Construction of Race, Voice of color.

A Corpus-Based Study on the Semantic Use of Reporting Verbs in English Majors’ Undergraduate Thesis Writing

This study aims to add further pedagogical knowledge on students’ academic writing by investigating the semantic patterns of reporting verbs (RVs) in L1 Chinese undergraduate English majors’ theses in a southern Chinese university based on the semantic categories by Hunston et al. (1996) and Charles (2006a). A comparative analysis was conducted across L2 and L1 students’ academic writing in the discipline of applied linguistics. The study yielded two major findings: 1) there was a significantly insufficient employment of RVs in general, particularly among three categories (Argue, Show, Find) by L2 students, who also presented a strong reliance on argumentation by intuition; 2) L2 students illustrated a restricted vocabulary repertoire of colloquial RVs and their usage of RVs was misrepresented in context, diverging from the intended rhetorical functions. These findings indicate that evidence-based argumentative writing practice and targeted lexical and rhetorical instructions on vocabulary knowledge require further promotion in L2 English learners’ academic writing training.

Students’ Challenges on Writing Undergraduate Thesis in the College of Business, Administration and Accountancy at Laguna University: Basis for Research Programs

The majority of academic degrees include thesis projects as part of the overall learning process. Despite efforts by the educational sector to improve students' writing abilities, many students struggle with academic writing. As a result, it is essential to discuss the problems of writing an undergraduate thesis and provide plans to overcome these difficulties. In this study, the researchers determined the students' level of difficulty in writing an undergraduate thesis. The researchers used descriptive correlational research through survey questionnaires to collect, classify, and analyze the data. The data was from 117 undergraduate students, respectively. Frequency, Percentage, Weighted Mean, and Chi-square was used to measure the relationships between variables. The study revealed the relationships between the student's demographic variables and level of difficulty in terms of English Proficiency, Research Methodology, Team Attitude, Research Topic, and Advisor Relationship. While no significant relationship was identified between demographic variables and level of difficulty in terms of time management. Based on the research findings, it was discovered that the highest predictor of what causes students to struggle in writing an undergraduate thesis is the Methodology, while the Advisor Relationship was the least predictor. As a result, a student research program was proposed to act efficiently, providing plans to improve students' research capabilities, resulting in increased productivity and paper quality.
