Sustainable UAO: Paving the Way Forward in the Rise of Sustainability as Institutional Ethos

In response to the pressing global environmental crisis precipitated by the transgression of planetary boundaries due to human activity, the Universidad Autónoma de Occidente (UAO) has made a steadfast commitment to the development of theories, strategies, and practices concerning sustainability since the late 1990s. Through the establishment of both undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as research projects and the Sustainable Campus initiative, UAO has laid the groundwork for national and international recognition in addressing sustainability. Acknowledging the progress made and the historical context, UAO recognizes that the time has come to take a significant quality step towards a more comprehensive and dedicated commitment. This step involves elevating sustainability to the status of institutional ethos. This entails ensuring that the principles of sustainability are prominently and explicitly integrated into the core functions of the university, including teaching, research, and social outreach. This work looks at the journey thus far and, more importantly, charts the course for the future in the elevation of sustainability as institutional ethos. It highlights the key milestones achieved over the past two decades while identifying the most significant challenges and barriers that the university must confront and overcome in the near future to fully embody this ethos. By doing so, UAO aims to realize its ambitious goal of becoming a truly sustainable institution.

Bridging the Digital Competence Gap: A Comparative Study of Preservice and In-Service Teachers in Lebanon Using the DigCompEdu Framework

AbstractThis study investigates the digital competence levels of Lebanese preservice and in-service teachers using the European Framework for the Digital Competence of Educators (DigCompEdu). The research aims to explore the existing gap in digital competence between these two groups through a cross-sectional descriptive survey, involving 170 in-service teachers and 194 preservice teachers from various undergraduate teacher training programs in Lebanon. The findings reveal significant differences between in-service and preservice teachers in all six competence areas and no significant difference per subject areas, with in-service teachers demonstrating higher overall digital competence compared to preservice teachers. The study draws attention to the need for improved practical training and targeted interventions in teacher education programs to better prepare preservice teachers for the digital demands of modern classrooms. The findings have implications for policy and practice, particularly in enhancing teacher training programs to meet the evolving digital needs of education.

Sculpture Training Before the Development of Digital Sculpture and Artificial Intelligence (AI): A Comparison of Some Sculpture Undergraduate Programs in Vietnam and the USA

This article analyzes the impact of digital technology and AI on traditional sculpture, emphasizing the need to update Sculpture training programs in Fine Arts Universities in Vietnam. Based on survey data on the awareness of experts about the influence of AI in the field of sculpture and on the results of comparing the Sculpture training programs of domestic and foreign training schools in the Sculpture industry. The author has outlined training objectives, developed output standards, and created a knowledge system to equip learners with the skills, knowledge, and attitudes needed for modern job roles.

How I Do It: Process Control in Medical Student Experiences of Surgery

ObjectiveExtreme variation exists in teaching and clinical exposure for medical students, both from specialty-to-specialty but also between universities. There is mounting literature highlighting the need to reform and standardise surgical education to allow for unified graduate competency. In line with the recommendations from the GMC2 and the Royal College of Surgeons England (RCSE) 3, Queens University Belfast (QUB) significantly revised their undergraduate medical programme. Within this new curriculum is the introduction of Specialty Focus week in Surgery. This report reviews the processes used in the introduction of this week. DesignThe initial curriculum was formulated with a weekly timetable consisting of tutorials, bedside teaching and students following a peri-operative case. Run charts were populated with an alert when feedback dropped below a certain standard, which then triggered an intervention. ParticipantsFeedback was collected via a QR code from the first 200 surgical student. SettingsBelfast City Hospital in association with Queens university Belfast (QUB) undergraduate surgical curriculum. ResultsRun charts resulted in an alert when feedback dropped below 8/10. Following this we implemented smaller group bedside teaching. There was a significant improvement in feedback post intervention (P=0.04) with no further alerts. Overall feedback had a non-significant feedback improvement post intervention (P=0.07) with once again, no further alerts. ConclusionThis review has shown how we have provided some standardisation of local surgical teaching, as well as having a process centred model of monitoring. This curriculum is easy to implement and could be reproduced elsewhere.

Factors and mediators impacting the number of undergraduate research mentees at a research-intensive Hispanic-serving institution.

Engaging in undergraduate research experiences is known to have broad and positive impacts on college students. Despite the benefits, achieving faculty buy-in and support can be challenging even when faculty have strong research funding. In order to understand how to better support undergraduate research programs, we applied quantitative models to explore how the impact of research funding is mediated by faculty beliefs about undergraduate research mentoring in STEM disciplines. The results indicate that faculty characteristics and beliefs about the benefits and barriers of mentoring undergraduate students in research impact the number of students mentored even when accounting for research funding levels of the individual faculty. Practical recommendations are presented based on the models from this research project in order to provide insight into how centers or units on a campus may work with faculty to support and encourage mentoring of undergraduates in research in the biomedical sciences.

A Pilot Project to Promote Research Competency in Medical Students Through Journal Clubs: Mixed Methods Study.

Undergraduate medical students often lack hands-on research experience and fundamental scientific research skills, limiting their exposure to the practical aspects of scientific investigation. The Cerrahpasa Neuroscience Society introduced a program to address this deficiency and facilitate student-led research. The primary goal of this initiative was to enhance medical students' research output by enabling them to generate and publish peer-reviewed papers within the framework of this pilot project. The project aimed to provide an accessible, global model for research training through structured journal clubs, mentorship from experienced peers, and resource access. In January 2022, a total of 30 volunteer students from various Turkish medical schools participated in this course-based undergraduate research experience program. Students self-organized into 2 groups according to their preferred study type: original research or systematic review. Two final-year students with prior research experience led the project, developing training modules using selected materials. The project was implemented entirely online, with participants completing training modules before using their newly acquired theoretical knowledge to perform assigned tasks. Based on student feedback, the project timeline was adjusted to allow for greater flexibility in meeting deadlines. Despite these adjustments, participants successfully completed their tasks, applying the theoretical knowledge they had gained to their respective assignments. As of April 2024, the initiative has culminated in 3 published papers and 3 more under peer review. The project has also seen an increase in student interest in further involvement and self-paced learning. This initiative leverages globally accessible resources for research training, effectively fostering research competency among participants. It has successfully demonstrated the potential for undergraduates to contribute to medical research output and paved the way for a self-sustaining, student-led research program. Despite some logistical challenges, the project provided valuable insights for future implementations, showcasing the potential for students to engage in meaningful, publishable research.

Bringing embodied approaches to on-campus research methods teaching for large STEM cohorts: design, challenges, learning

In the post-pandemic world, Learning Development researchers have posited a ‘new hybrid era of teaching’, in which lessons from lockdown in best practice for online and remote teaching play a key role in increasing the inclusivity of higher education (Kantcheva and Bickle, 2023). At the same time, as many students have returned to campus, research has begun to interrogate the role that campus spaces and in-person interaction play in teaching and learning in this new era (Hrach, 2021; Cox et al., 2022). Whether through explicit pedagogical design or implicitly, courses with practical elements, particularly in many scientific disciplines, tend to favour principles of embodied learning through ‘learning-by-doing’. Courses incorporate hands-on interaction with laboratory equipment and social constructivist approaches through student co-creation (Deshmukh, 2021), the centrality of which to students’ professional training was made even more apparent during the move to remote learning. However, these same principles have not underscored the pedagogical approach to research methods education on the undergraduate Engineering degree programmes at the University of Manchester, which has typically been taught more didactically in recent years. This lecture-format approach has been used partially due to challenges of practicality, with the course unit being delivered to a large cohort that can reach 500 students in a typical year. With these principles in mind, this academic year, the Library Teaching, Learning and Students team has collaborated with academic leads across Engineering disciplines to deliver embedded research methods workshops that incorporate elements of an embodied, social constructivist approach, playing to the unique strengths of in-person group learning. This presentation charted the process of Learning Developers and academic staff co-designing these workshops, highlighting challenges encountered, and outlining learning from the process to take forward into future collaborations with disciplines with large cohorts.

Mental Health Experiences Among Undergraduate Nursing Students in a New Zealand Tertiary Institution: A Time for Change.

Nursing students in undergraduate programmes exhibit comparable, sometimes higher, levels of poor mental health and substance use compared to the general population; however, this area remains under-researched in New Zealand. The study involved 172 nursing students enrolled in the Bachelor of Nursing programme at one tertiary institution in Auckland, New Zealand. Employing a mixed-methodology approach, a 29-question survey comprising both open and closed questions was administered to explore the students' experiences with mental health and substance use, as well as their access to support services. Quantitative data were analysed using SPSS version 29 descriptive statistics, while a general inductive approach guided the qualitative analysis. A significant proportion of participants (75%) reported experiencing emotional distress during their studies, with anxiety being the most prevalent (78.5%). A smaller percentage disclosed substance use (8.1%) including excessive alcohol use, cannabis use, nicotine use, vaping cannabis and some refusal to reveal substance use. Surprisingly, less than 1% (n = 0.6) utilised institutional support services. Three qualitative themes were identified including emotional distress and associated effects, emotional and psychological impacts on nursing students' academic journey and tertiary support systems. The findings highlight the urgent need to address the mental health and addiction challenges experienced by nursing students, given their potential adverse effects on academic success and overall well-being. Urgent action is needed to integrate mental health training into the curriculum and provide faculty support. In this study, the underutilisation and inadequacy of institutional support services signal a need for institutional reforms to provide access and personalised mental health support to nursing students. Providing essential skills and support for student success contributes to the overall well-being of the nursing workforce.

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into undergraduate education

The incorporation of AI as a tool in educating undergraduates is a promising concept held with a great potential of positively influencing the learning process, learners’ experiences and institutional management systems. At the same time, it lifts essential moral issues that ought to be adequately addressed into new stages. The aim of this paper is to review literature on the subject of ethics in the application of AI in the context of an undergraduate degree program. Algorithmic choices for instructional design are another relevant ethical concern along with privacy and data protection, practitioners’ responsibilities, and the requisite levels of transparency, as well as the depersonalized and mechanized nature of learning management systems. The analysis reveals how the use of AI technology might deepen the social and economic inequities the students have described and how difficult it is to keep the students’ trust in cases when AI technology is not transparent. Also, the paper raises concerns related to several ethical issues and their consequences to students, teachers, and institutions on how strong ethical principles and policies to apply AI in the educational sectors. It is established that the use of AI in the delivery of undergraduate education has the potential of enhancing the effectiveness of learning(). Nonetheless, it is recommended that the integration of AI in the classroom must be done with reference to several ethical concerns so as to prevent further negative ramifications of the technology.

Certificate in Advanced Behavioral Interventions Among Multiple Populations

This manuscript describes the curricular and instructional approaches utilized in the composition and delivery of the Certificate in Advanced Behavioral Interventions Among Multiple Populations (CABISAM) created by the School of Social Work at Loyola University Chicago. CABISAM is a social work led interprofessional education (IPE) model where students from social work, nursing, and medicine engage in didactic and experiential activities to advance clinical and leadership knowledge of interprofessional approaches to screening, brief intervention, and referral for treatment (SBIRT) with diverse populations. An interprofessional team of faculty from each discipline was involved throughout the development and planning process to consider accreditation, cultural, and logistical issues unique to each profession. CABISAM engages students in an evidenced-based interprofessional education (IPE) experience with exposure to cutting-edge topics relevant to health professionals: training in interprofessional practice, substance use in unique settings with diverse populations, and clinical implementation skills. This manuscript presents an adaptable and generalizable interprofessional education approach to other undergraduate and graduate programs across disciplines.

<p><em>Quantitative workload can be expressed as the amount of work required to fulfil a patient's medical needs. High-quality workload represents a high level of responsibility in patient care. Nurses' workload is the most important predictor of mental health, stress, job dissatisfaction, fatigue, and the presence of burnout. This service activity aims to provide and increase student knowledge about the Effect of Gender and Years of Service on Work Motivation of Nurses in Hospital Inpatients to Students of the Hospital Administration Study Program, Undergraduate Program, Faculty of Health Sciences, Kusuma Husada University, Surakarta by using a pre-experiment design with a research design of one group pretest and post-test design with a total of 35 students and the activity time in May 2024. This service uses quantitative research with multiple linear regression. There is an increase in the knowledge of participants before and after the provision of material marked by the pre-test and post test which shows that the level of knowledge before being given the material is 69% but after being given the material has increased to 89%. There is a significant difference between students' knowledge about gender roles and tenure on nurses' work motivation in hospital inpatient care.</em></p><p><strong><em>Keywords: Workload, Gender, Work motivation, Nurses, Hospitalisation</em></strong><em></em></p>

An examination of sources fostering student teachers’ academic well-being

ABSTRACT This study examined student teachers’ perspectives on the sources of their academic well-being within the context of a four-year undergraduate teacher education programme in Qatar. A survey was developed and validated using a conceptual framework entailing cognitive, social and emotional dimensions. Statistical analyses involving 806 responses revealed five factors that contributed to participants’ academic well-being, namely: (F-1) self-regulated learning, (F-2) academic values, (F-3) social engagement, (F-4) peer learning and (F-5) emotional engagement. Comparative analyses between gender, age, reported GPA and credit hours verified the different influence of the five factors on fostering academic well-being. These results are further discussed in light of implications for using the validated instrument and devising tailored interventions.

Better together: a program to increase the public health corps in the southeast United States

Abstract Background This undergraduate public health program implemented in the southeastern United States addresses the need for an expanded public health corps to fill health service gaps underscored by the Covid-19 pandemic, including a shortage of personnel with the skill to function on emergency frontlines; workforce development resources; and socially just healthcare programs to support under-resourced areas. Objectives To enhance student knowledge of public health and increase volunteers available for emergency and public health response within local, state, and global communities. After program participation, how confident did participants feel that they could know what to do in the case of an emergency? After program participation, how knowledgeable did participants feel that they would know what to do to protect others in the case of an emergency? After program participation, how aware were participants about the issue of public health response and preparedness? Results 216 students were recruited at a university in the southeastern United States, and 75% completed 30 hours of modules, immersion activities and skill-based trainings. Almost all (91%) were pre-nursing/nursing or public health majors. The majority of participants (90%) indicated a level of agreement with the statement, “I am confident that I know what to do in the case of an emergency” and 93% indicated a level of agreement with the statement, “I would know what to do to protect others in the case of an emergency”. Almost all participants (96%) indicated a level of agreement with the statement, “My awareness of public health response and preparedness has increased due to participation in the project”. Qualitative results mirrored a similar strong level of support for the program. Conclusions Students who complete appropriate training play an essential role in pandemic management and the broad training the medical workforce receives can also be applied to diverse disaster scenarios. Key messages • The goal of the project was to enhance undergraduate student knowledge of public health. • The secondary goal of the project was to increase the number of students available to volunteer for emergency and public health response in local, state, and global communities.

Assessment of the level of health literacy in students with specific learning disorders

Abstract Background Specific Learning Disorders (SLDs) include dyslexia, dysorthography, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia and are referred to as specific educational learning disabilities. For students with SLDs, the issue of health literacy (HL) arises because understanding, evaluating and utilising health information are critical to making informed decisions about one’s health. This study aims to determine the level of HL in students with a certified SLD. Methods From November 2023 to April 2024, students with an SLD studying at the University of Udine (Italy) who agreed to participate, were surveyed using an online questionnaire on the EUSurvey platform. This consisted of the HLS-EU-Q47 to measure HL, followed by a socio-demographic section. The HLS-EU-Q47 classified HL into 4 levels: inadequate, problematic, sufficient and excellent; descriptive analysis was performed and the correlation with the sociodemographic data was examined using χ² test. Results 38 students participated (mean age 24 years, 60.5% female), 60% of whom are in an undergraduate degree program. 42% of the sample had a single SLD (26% dyslexia, 13% dysgraphia), while 58% of them have multiple SLDs. Overall, 42% of students were found to have a problematic HL level, 24% inadequate, only 24% sufficient and 11% excellent. No statistically significant association was found between) HL level and gender, number of SLDs, school attended at the time of SLD certification, and use of supports (all p-values>0.05). Conclusions The level of HL in students with SLDs appears to be consistent with data from the Italian population (58% inadequate or problematic) from the 2019-HLS19 Health Literacy Survey. This suggests that the presence of an SLD does not affect the level of HL and that it is likely that the university degree is able compensate for HL difficulties that could be related to the presence of an SLD. A larger sample is needed to see if it is confirmed that there is no association between the investigated variables. Key messages • Despite the presence of SLDs, the HL of academic students follows the same trend compared to the general Italian population. • The structural use of supportive measures by these students probably bridges the gap in access to and correct use of health information.

Study on the Experience of Integrating Agricultural Intellectual Property Content in the Teaching of the International Economic Law

International Economic Law is one of the compulsory courses for undergraduate law programmes in China. The Faculty of Law of the Beijing University of Agriculture implements the development of intellectual property rights in agriculture while integrating the relevant content into the international economic law programme as a special chapter. The aim is to expand the traditional international intellectual property rights chapter into an overview of international intellectual property rights treaties, international protection of geographical indications of agricultural products, and cases of agricultural gene security. At the same time, the Faculty of Law of fers a number of elective courses concerning agricultural intellectual property rights. It is also building a practical platform for intellectual property topics in the international economic law programme through the combination of law and agricultural science. By reforming the teaching of the international economic law programme, teaching resources have been further integrated. This has led to an increase in LLB admission scores, while also enhancing the practicality of teaching the international economic law programme.

Self-directed learning and the student learning experience in undergraduate clinical science programs: a scoping review.

Health professional organisations are increasingly promoting the use of self-directed learning. Furthermore, the rapidly evolving field of healthcare has meant that there is greater emphasis within tertiary education for students to become self-directed learners and possess the skills to engage in life-long learning. The aim of this scoping review was to explore the drivers that improve the student learning experience, in undergraduate clinical science programs that utilise self-directed learning. The Joanna Briggs Institute Scoping Review Methodology guided this study. The electronic databases MEDLINE, Embase, Emcare, Scopus and ERIC were comprehensively searched in April 2022 and re-run August 2023, for peer-reviewed research articles published in English. The original search was developed in MEDLINE and then adapted to each database. Following the Joanna Briggs Scoping Review methodology, articles were screened first by title and abstract and then by full text. Included articles were assessment for methodological quality. The search strategy yielded 2209 articles for screening. 19 met the inclusion criteria. Five key factors were identified which improve the student learning experience in self-directed learning: (i) curricular elements; (ii) educator influence; (iii) impact of peers, (iv) environment; and (v) clinical placement experiences. There are many curricular, environmental, and external factors which can improve the student learning experience in programs that utilise self-directed learning. Greater understanding of these factors will allow educators within clinical science programs to implement self-directed learning strategies more effectively within curriculum.

Utilising Blended Learning for Large Classes to Deliver an Introductory Programming Course

Higher education institutions are constantly pushed to increase the student intake and produce industry-ready graduates. The pressure generally arises from the governing bodies, originating from socio-political factors. It is particularly evident in the field of Information Communication Technology (ICT) where there is a growing need for quality graduates. Undergraduate programmes in the field of ICT generally offer introductory computer programming courses that are mandatory at early stages of the degree programme. Consequently, the number of students registering for such courses can increase drastically. The students are coming from diversified backgrounds. While some students may have prior experience in computer programming, a larger majority may not have any prior knowledge or experience. Increased class size meets the constraint of the limited availability of physical classroom space and would require the class to be separated into smaller groups for face-to-face activities. Large classes are also challenged with the increased man-power requirement in terms of lecturers, instructors, and teaching assistants. Maintaining student engagement and interactivity becomes increasingly difficult in a large class. Grading of assessments becomes time-consuming and needs and requires increased manpower. Based on the observations and learning from an ongoing introductory programming course, this study evaluates the procedure for overcoming the challenges faced by the teaching staff, especially with a class size exceeding 1000. To cover the theoretical components, recorded video lectures are provided. The class is divided into groups consisting of approximately 100 students and live, online, interactive group discussions are conducted. The live, online smaller group discussions allow students to clarify doubts regarding the content. This also allows the distribution of the limited teaching and assistant staff. Students who need further assistance are encouraged to meet the teaching assistants physically. Thus, the workload is distributed effectively, and it helps ensure the dedicated support and attention is provided to the students. Auto graded programming assignments are effectively employed for formative and summative assessments, which reduces the grading workload significantly. The findings of this study provide insights on course design to effectively deliver the content and conduct assessments overcoming the challenges presented by increased class size.

Tapping into Gen Z Ways to Enhance E-learning and Meaningful Connections

Generation-Z born 2000-2009 (Australian Bureau of Statistics 2024) are comfortable with digital technology and connecting with one another using social media platforms. Regardless of this proficiency they may still experience challenges engaging with online learning especially around social cohesion, wellbeing and learning success. Other challenges they may encounter are communicating and interacting face-to-face in the workplace, which is a vital 21st Century graduate attribute. A growing societal concern is staff shortages and unfilled vacancies within the health sector. There are many factors influencing health care workforce shortages, but Generation-Z may be a good fit due to their growing awareness of societal concerns and willingness to upskill. This study seeks to investigate the enablers and barriers impacting Generation-Z nursing students’ ability to successfully engage with e-learning and to communicate effectively in face-to-face interactions within the workplace environment. Furthermore, this study seeks to explore the ways Generation- Z nursing students communicate and interact with each other on social media. The study will use a qualitative, social constructionism (making meaning in a social context) methodology. Methods include three focus group discussions with students aged 18-24 years, enrolled external/online in an undergraduate nursing program, with a minimum of one clinical placement completed or attempted. Data will be analysed using thematic analysis process proposed by Braun and Clarke (2022). Findings will inform e-learning design strategies that address the identified barriers and use the enablers to help Generation-Z successfully transfer their social media communication knowledge and skills to better engage with online learning, leading to higher satisfaction and completion rates. These strategies include supporting the transference of their fluent online social media communication skills to build and use meaningful connections relevant to the healthcare workplace that further supports the enablement of the graduate attribute, effective communicator.

Assessment of knowledge, attitude, and practice of pharmacovigilance amongst undergraduate students at a tertiary care teaching hospital: a questionnaire-based study

Background: Pharmacovigilance ensures patient safety and rational medication use. Spontaneous reporting by healthcare professionals is crucial, but underreporting is a major limitation. Education and training are vital to improve Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) reporting. Inculcating pharmacovigilance into undergraduate programs empowers medical students to report ADRs. Methods: This prospective questionnaire-based study focused on assessing knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) regarding pharmacovigilance. A total of 223 medical undergraduate students of which 156 were students in 2nd year and 67 in 3rd final years who gave their consent were included in this study. Participants completed a pre-questionnaire before undergoing a training session on pharmacovigilance related to KAP. Following the training session, a post-questionnaire was given. Pre- and post-test questionnaires were compared and analysed using an appropriate statistical test. Results: The study showed that knowledge and attitude scores among second and third-year medical students improved after the training program. Following training, the mean knowledge score for second-year students significantly increased from 5.56 to 8.6, while their mean attitude score increased from 5.9 to 7.24. Similarly, for third-final-year students, the mean knowledge score improved from 6.62 to 9.01, and the mean attitude score increased from 6.69 to 7.52. The results clearly showed that the training program had a positive impact on the knowledge and attitude of both student groups. The mean practice scores for second-year and third-final-year students were 0.76 and 1.34, respectively. Conclusions: The study showed significant improvement in knowledge and attitude after the educational intervention, indicating a positive impact of the training program.
