Effects of walking speeds on lower extremity kinematic synergy in toe vertical position control: An experimental study.

This study aimed to investigate whether lower limb joints mutually compensate for each other, resulting in motor synergy that suppresses toe vertical position fluctuation, and whether walking speeds affect lower limb synergy. Seventeen male university students walked at slow (0.85 ± 0.04 m/s), medium (1.43 ± 0.05 m/s) and fast (1.99 ± 0.06 m/s) speeds on a 15-m walkway while lower limb kinematic data were collected. Uncontrolled manifold analysis was used to quantify the strength of synergy. Two-way (speed × phase) repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to analyze all dependent variables. A significant speed-by-phase interaction was observed in the synergy index (SI) (P < .001). At slow walking speeds, subjects had greater SI during mid-swing (P < .001), while at fast walking speeds, they had greater SI during early-swing (P < .001). During the entire swing phase, fast walking exhibited lower SI values than medium (P = .005) and slow walking (P = .027). Kinematic synergy plays a crucial role in controlling toe vertical position during the swing phase, and fast walking exhibits less synergy than medium and slow walking. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the role of kinematic synergy in gait stability and have implications for the development of interventions aimed at improving gait stability and reducing the risk of falls.

Motor flexibility to stabilize the toe position during obstacle crossing in older adults: an investigation using an uncontrolled manifold analysis.

An age-related decrease in the ability to exploit the abundant degrees of freedom of the body, referred to as motor flexibility, leads to a heightened fall risk. The present study investigated motor flexibility to stabilize the toe position during obstacle crossing in older adults and its correlation with the magnitude of foot elevation. Twenty-six older adults (70.9 ± 7.4 years old) and 21 younger adults (25.4 ± 5.0 years old) walked and crossed an obstacle, during which the dominant limb was always the leading limb. An uncontrolled manifold (UCM) analysis was used to quantify the flexibility during obstacle crossing as the synergy index, with the vertical toe position being regarded as the performance variable and the segment angles of the lower limbs as the elemental variables. The results showed that older participants had a significantly lower synergy index for the trailing limb before the moment of obstacle crossing than younger participants, suggesting reduced flexibility in part. The results also showed that, regardless of age, foot elevation was negatively correlated with the synergy index, suggesting that a so-called "conservative strategy" (i.e., a tendency to show extraordinarily high foot elevation to ensure collision avoidance) may be related to their reduced motor flexibility.

An analysis of the effect of motor experience on muscle synergy in the badminton jump smash

The jump smash is badminton's most aggressive technical manoeuvre, which is often the key to winning a match. This paper aims to explore the neuromuscular control strategies of advanced and beginner players when jumping smash in different ways. Collecting sEMG and kinematic data from 18 subjects with different motor experiences when jumping smash. Nonnegative Matrix Factorization and K-Means clustering were used to extract muscle synergies and exclude irrelevant combined synergies. Uncontrolled manifold analysis was then used to explore the association between synergies and shoulder stability. In addition, motor output at the spinal cord level was assessed by mapping sEMG to each spinal cord segment. The study found that advanced subjects could respond to different jump smash styles by adjusting the coordinated activation strategies of the upper-limb and postural muscles. Long-term training can induce a rapid decrease in the degree of co-variation of the synergies before contact with a shuttlecock to better cope with an upcoming collision. It is recommended that beginners should focus more on training the coordination of upper-limb muscles and postural muscles.

Affordances for throwing: An uncontrolled manifold analysis.

Movement systems are massively redundant, and there are always multiple movement solutions to any task demand; motor abundance. Movement consequently exhibits 'repetition without repetition', where movement outcomes are preserved but the kinematic details of the movement vary across repetitions. The uncontrolled manifold (UCM) concept is one of several methods that analyses movement variability with respect to task goals, to quantify repetition without repetition and test hypotheses about the control architecture producing a given abundant response to a task demand. However, like all these methods, UCM is under-constrained in how it decomposes a task and performance. In this paper, we propose and test a theoretical framework for constraining UCM analysis, specifically the perception of task-dynamical affordances. Participants threw tennis balls to hit a target set at 5m, 10m or 15m, and we performed UCM analysis on the shoulder-elbow-wrist joint angles with respect to variables derived from an affordance analysis of this task as well as more typical biomechanical variables. The affordance-based UCM analysis performed well, although data also showed thrower dynamics (effectivities) need to be accounted for as well. We discuss how the theoretical framework of affordances and affordance-based control can be connected to motor abundance methods in the future.

Advanced Force Coordination of Lower Extremities During Visuomotor Control Task in Soccer Players

ABSTRACT Purpose: This study is aimed to determine specific bilateral lower extremity motor performances and coordination patterns in soccer players with healthy controls using the bilateral force control paradigm. We hypothesized that soccer players would show more advanced bilateral force control performances than untrained controls. Methods: Participants were 13 university soccer players and 13 healthy controls. Each group performed bilateral ankle dorsiflexion force control tasks across two vision conditions (i.e., vision and no-vision) and two targeted force levels (i.e., 10% and 40% maximum voluntary contraction). We calculated force accuracy, variability, and symmetry to assess force control performances. To estimate bilateral force coordination, we calculated Pearson’s correlation coefficients between feet-within a single trial and considered uncontrolled manifold variables across multiple trials. In the no-vision condition, we performed secondary analyses for initial force control patters after removal of visual feedback. Results: There were no significant group differences in bilateral force accuracy and variability but, compared to the control group, soccer players showed higher force symmetry between left and right ankle dorsiflexion forces. For force coordination between feet, soccer players revealed more negative values of the correlation coefficient and greater good variability from the uncontrolled manifold analysis than those for the control group. The secondary analysis revealed no significant group differences in the time until force drift and amount of force adjustments. Conclusions: Soccer players have more compensatory and flexible interlimb force coordination strategies between feet.

Test-Retest reliability and measurement error of the uncontrolled manifold analysis: A step towards the clinical translation

The uncontrolled manifold (UCM) analysis has gained broad application in biomechanics and neuroscience for investigating the structure of motor variability in functional tasks. The UCM utilizes inter-trial analysis to partition the variance of elemental variables (e.g., finger forces, joint angles) that affect (VORT) and do not affect (VUCM) a performance variable (e.g., total force, end-effector position). However, to facilitate the translation of UCM into clinical settings, it is crucial to demonstrate the reliability of UCM estimates: VORT, VUCM, and their normalized difference, ΔV. This study aimed to determine the test–retest reliability using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC3,K), Bland-Altman plots, the standard error of measurement (SEM), and the minimal detectable change (MDC) of UCM estimate. Fifteen healthy individuals (24.8 ± 1.2 yrs old) performed a finger coordination task, with sessions separated by one hour, one day, and one week. Excellent reliability was found for VORT (ICC3,K = 0.97) and VUCM (ICC3,K = 0.92), whereas good reliability was observed for ΔV (ICC3,K = 0.84). Bland-Altman plots reveled no systematic differences. SEM% values were 24.57 %, 26.80 % and 12.49 % for VORT, VUCM and ΔV respectively, while the normalized MDC% values were 68.12 %, 74.30 % and 34.61 % for VORT, VUCM and ΔV respectively. Our results support the use of UCM as a reliable method for investigating the structure of movement variability. The excellent measurement properties make the UCM a promising tool for tracking changes in motor behavior over time (i.e., effects of interventions in prospective studies).

Neuromechanical stabilisation of the centre of mass during running

BackgroundStabilisation of the centre of mass (COM) trajectory is thought to be important during running. There is emerging evidence of the importance of leg length and angle regulation during running, which could contribute to stability in the COM trajectory The present study aimed to understand if leg length and angle stabilises the vertical and anterior-posterior (AP) COM displacements, and if the stability alters with running speeds. MethodsData for this study came from an open-source treadmill running dataset (n = 28). Leg length (m) was calculated by taking the resultant distance of the two-dimensional sagittal plane leg vector (from pelvis segment to centre of pressure). Leg angle was defined by the angle subtended between the leg vector and the horizontal surface. Leg length and angle were scaled to a standard deviation of one. Uncontrolled manifold analysis (UCM) was used to provide an index of motor abundance (IMA) in the stabilisation of the vertical and AP COM displacement. ResultsIMAAP and IMAvertical were largely destabilising and always stabilising, respectively. As speed increased, the peak destabilising effect on IMAAP increased from −0.66(0.18) at 2.5 m/s to −1.12(0.18) at 4.5 m/s, and the peak stabilising effect on IMAvertical increased from 0.69 (0.19) at 2.5 m/s to 1.18 (0.18) at 4.5 m/s. ConclusionTwo simple parameters from a simple spring-mass model, leg length and angle, can explain the control behind running. The variability in leg length and angle helped stabilise the vertical COM, whilst maintaining constant running speed may rely more on inter-limb variation to adjust the horizontal COM accelerations.

Stabilization and compensation strategy of the hip angle during gait in hip-osteoarthritis patients from the perspective of whole-body movement synergy

BackgroundThe implementation of a strategy to control the hip angle during gait is important to avoid disease progression in patients with hip osteoarthritis (OA). Research questionDo patients with hip OA tend to stabilize their hip angles by a combination of whole-body movements during gait in terms of variability? MethodsA public gait dataset comprising 80 asymptomatic participants and 106 patients with hip OA was used. Uncontrolled manifold analysis was performed using the joint angles as elemental variables and the hip joint angles as performance variables. The synergy index ΔV, variances of elemental variables that did not affect the performance variable (VUCM) and of those that affected the performance variable (VORT), and index of covariation strategy (COV) were calculated in sagittal and frontal plane. A one-sample t-test for statistical parametric mapping (SPM) analysis was used for ΔV and COV. Two-sample t-tests of SPM analyses were used for ΔV, VUCM, and VORT to compare the two groups. ResultsIn both planes, the ΔV and COV were significantly larger than zero in both groups (p < 0.001). In the sagittal plane, the VORT was higher in the hip OA group than in the control group after 77 % of stance phase. In the frontal plane, the hip OA group had larger ΔV and VUCM after last half and last quartile of stance phase compared to the control group, respectively. The VORT was smaller in the hip OA group than in the control group. SignificanceThe hip angle was stabilized in the hip OA group in the frontal plane but insufficiently stabilized in the sagittal plane; however, the patients changed their hip angle during the early phase of stance. The combination of whole-body movements contributed to the stabilization of hip angle.

The Influence of Experience on Neuromuscular Control of the Body When Cutting at Different Angles

Cutting is an offensive technique commonly used in football and basketball to pass the opponent’s defence by changing direction quickly in running. This paper aims to investigate the effect of experience and angle on the neuromuscular control strategies of the trunk and lower limbs during cutting. Non-negative matrix factorisation and K-means were used to extract muscle synergies (muscles that are activated in parallel) of 12 subjects with cut experience and 9 subjects without experience based on the sEMG signal collected from cutting at three cut angles (45°, 90°, and 135°), which was also mapped into the spinal motor output. Uncontrolled manifold analysis was used to establish the relationship between muscle synergies and COP. This study found that experienced subjects tended to use the lower limb muscles rather than the postural muscles as stabiliser muscles compared to novices. Experienced subjects can recruit an additional set of muscle synergy to cope with large-angle cuts. In addition, experienced subjects can activate the second muscle synergy, involving the hip and ankle stabilisation muscles, in advance to improve postural stability when cutting in large-angle. Synergy index of experienced subjects dropped rapidly before the quick stop and was relatively high during the change of direction. These results suggest that experience can modify the postural stabilisation mechanisms during cutting, and prompt the lower limb muscle synergy to produce anticipatory adjustment to improve postural stability in the anterior-posterior and internal-external directions.

Influence of aging on the control of the whole-body angular momentum during volitional stepping: An UCM-based analysis

Evidence suggests that whole-body angular momentum (WBAM) is a highly controlled mechanical variable for performing our daily motor activities safely and efficiently. Recent findings have revealed that, compared to young adults, older adults exhibit larger range of WBAM during various motor tasks, such as walking and stepping. However, it remains unclear whether these age-related changes are ascribed to a poorer control of WBAM with age or not. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of normal aging on WBAM control during stepping. Twelve young adults and 14 healthy older adults performed a series of volitional stepping at their preferred selected speed. An Uncontrolled Manifold (UCM) analysis was conducted to explore the presence of synergies among the angular momenta of the body segments (elemental variables) to control WBAM (performance variable); i.e., to stabilize or destabilize it. Results revealed the existence of a stronger synergy destabilizing the WBAM in the sagittal-plane older adults compared to young adults during stepping, while there was no difference between the two groups in the frontal and transversal planes. Although older participants also had a larger range of WBAM in the sagittal plane compared to young adults, we found no significant correlation between synergy index and the range of WBAM in the sagittal plane. We concluded that the age-related changes in WBAM during stepping are not ascribed to alterations in the ability to control this variable with aging.

Lack of visual information alters lower limb motor coordination to control center of mass trajectory during walking

Vision, as queen of the senses, plays a critical role in guiding locomotion. Little is known about the effects of vision on gait coordination in terms of variability. The uncontrolled manifold (UCM) approach offers a window to the structure of motor variability that has been difficult to obtain from the traditional correlation analysis. In this study, we used the UCM analysis to quantify how the lower limb motion is coordinated to control the center of mass (COM) while walking under different visual conditions. We also probed how synergy strength evolved along the stance phase. Ten healthy participants walked on the treadmill with and without visual information. Leg joint angle variance with respect to the whole-body COM was partitioned into good (i.e., the one that kept the COM) and bad (i.e., the one that changed the COM) variances. We observed that after vision was eliminated, both variances increased throughout the stance phase while the strength of the synergy (the normalized difference between the two variances) decreased significantly and even reduced to zero at heel contact. Thus, walking with restricted vision alters the strength of the kinematic synergy to control COM in the plane of progression. We also found that the strength of this synergy varied across different walking phases and gait events in both visual conditions. We concluded that the UCM analysis can quantify altered coordination of COM when vision is blocked and sheds insights on the role of vision in the synergistic control of locomotion.

Attentional focus effects on joint covariation in a reaching task

Adopting an external focus of attention (EF) has been found beneficial over internal focus (IF) for performing motor skills. Previous studies primarily examined focus of attention (FOA) effects on performance outcomes (such as error and accuracy), with relatively less emphasis on movement coordination. Given that human movements are kinematically and kinetically abundant (Gefland & Latash, 1998), FOA instructions may change how motor abundance is utilized by the CNS. This study applied the uncontrolled manifold analysis (UCM) to address this question in a reaching task. Healthy young adults (N = 38; 22 ± 1 yr; 7 men, 31 women) performed planar reaching movements to a target using either the dominant or nondominant arm under two different FOA instructions: EF and IF. Reaching was performed without online visual feedback and at a preferred pace. Joint angles of the clavicle-scapula, shoulder, elbow, and wrist were recorded, and their covariation for controlling dowel endpoint position was analyzed via UCM. As expected, IF led to a higher mean radial error than EF, driven by increases in aiming bias and variability. Consistent with this result, the UCM analysis showed that IF led to higher goal-relevant variance among the joints (VORT) compared to EF starting from the first 20% of the reach to the end. However, the goal-irrelevant variance (VUCM)—index of joint variance that does not affect the end-effector position—did not show FOA effects. The index of stability of joint coordination with respect to endpoint position (ΔV) was also not different between the EF and IF. Consistent with the constrained action hypothesis, these results provide evidence that IF disrupted goal-relevant joint covariation starting in the early phases of the reach without affecting goal-irrelevant coordination.

Effects of postural instability on the coordination between posture and arm reaching

Reaching from standing requires adjustments of hand movement and posture, which are assured by redundant kinematic degrees of freedom. However, the increased demand for postural adjustments may interfere with the stability of reaching. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of postural instability on the use of kinematic redundancy to stabilize the finger and center-of-mass trajectories during reaching from standing in healthy adults. Sixteen healthy young adults performed reaching movements from standing with and without postural instability induced by small base-of-support. The three-dimensional positions of 48 markers were recorded at 100 Hz. The uncontrolled manifold (UCM) analysis was performed separately with the finger and center-of-mass positions being the performance variables, and joint angles being the elemental variables. ΔV, the normalized difference between the variance in joint angle that does not affect task performance (VUCM) and the variance that does affect task performance (VORT), was calculated separately for finger (ΔVEP) and center-of-mass (ΔVCOM) positions, and was compared between stable and unstable base-of-support conditions. ΔVEP decreased after movement onset and reached its minimum value at around 30–50% of the normalized movement time, and increased until movement offset, while ΔVCOM remained stable. At 60%–100% normalized movement time, ΔVEP was significantly reduced in the unstable base-of-support, compared to the stable base-of-support condition. ΔVCOM remained similar between the two conditions. At movement offset, ΔVEP was significantly reduced in the unstable base-of-support, compared to the stable base-of-support condition, and was associated with a substantial increase in VORT. Postural instability might reduce the ability to use kinematic redundancy to stabilize the reaching movement. The central nervous system may prioritize the maintenance of postural stability over focal movement when postural stability is challenged.

Characteristics of muscle synergy and anticipatory synergy adjustments strategy when cutting in different angles

BackgroundCutting is a quick change of direction that challenges body balance and stability. As the cut-angle increases, the elite athlete can achieve higher performance by pre-adjusting the posture of the lower limb joints. However, it is unclear how the cut-angle affects the neuromuscular control of cutting and the step before cutting, which is essential for daily training and preventing injury in large-angle cutting. Research questionThe purpose of this study was to determine how neuromuscular control strategies change under different angles for cutting and the step before cutting MethodsNon-negative matrix factorisation and K-means clustering were used to extract muscle synergy in the trunk and lower limbs of 12 athletes when cutting at different angles. Uncontrolled manifold analysis was used to clarify whether the muscle synergy fluctuations in the step before cutting were beneficial in stabilising the COP during the cutting. ResultsThis study found that the angle did not affect the number of muscle synergies either in the cutting or the step before the cutting. As the angle increases, the activation timing of synergy module 2 during cutting moves forward and is tightly integrated with module 1. The combined synergy at 90° accounted for the largest proportion of either cutting or the step before cutting and had a lower synergy index. SignificanceMuscle synergy can respond to large-angle cutting through flexible combinations. The muscle synergy for 90° cutting is less regular and has a lower degree of anticipatory synergy adjustments, which may result in poorer postural stability and an increased risk of lower limb joint injury during cutting.

The motor and the brake of the trailing leg in human walking: transtibial amputation limits ankle-knee torque covariation.

Lower-limb amputation limits inherent motor abundance in the locomotor system and impairs walking mechanics. Able-bodied walkers vary ankle torque to adjust step-to-step leg force production as measured by resultant ground reaction forces. Simultaneously, knee torque covaries with ankle torque to act as a brake, resulting in consistent peak leg power output measured by external mechanical power generated on the center of mass. Our objective was to test how leg force control during gait is affected by joint torque variance structure in the amputated limb. Within the framework of the uncontrolled manifold analysis, we measured the Index of Motor Abundance (IMA) to quantify joint torque variance structure of amputated legs and its effect on leg force, where IMA > 0 indicates a stabilizing structure. We further evaluated the extent to which IMA in amputated legs used individual (INV) and coordinated (COV) joint control strategies. Amputated legs produced IMA and INV values similar to intact legs, indicating that torque deviations of the prosthetic ankle can modulate leg force at the end of stance phase. However, we observed much lower COV values in the amputated leg relative to intact legs indicating that biological knee joint torque of the amputated leg does not covary with prosthetic ankle torque. This observation suggests inter-joint coordination during gait is significantly limited as a result of transtibial amputation and may help explain the higher rate of falls and impaired balance recovery in this population, pointing to a greater need to focus on inter-joint coordination within the amputated limb.

Higher visual gain contributions to bilateral motor synergies and force control

This study investigated the effects of altered visual gain levels on bilateral motor synergies determined by the uncontrolled manifold (UCM) hypothesis and force control. Twelve healthy participants performed bimanual index finger abduction force control tasks at 20% of their maximal voluntary contraction across four different visual gain conditions: 8, 80, 256, and 512 pixels/N. Quantifying force accuracy and variability within a trial provided a bimanual force control outcome. The UCM analysis measured bilateral motor synergies, a proportion of good variance to bad variance across multiple trials. Correlation analyses determined whether changes in the UCM variables were related to changes in force control variables from the lowest to highest visual gain conditions, respectively. Multiple analyses indicated that the three highest visual gain conditions in comparison to the lowest visual gain increased values of bilateral motor synergies and target force accuracy. The correlation findings showed that a reduction of bad variance from the lowest to three highest visual gain conditions was related to increased force accuracy. These findings reveal that visual gain greater than 8 pixels/N facilitates bimanual force control.

Does the number of steps needed for UCM gait analysis differs between healthy and stroke?

The basis for the uncontrolled manifold (UCM) approach is the variability among repetitions of a motor task. Thus, reliable results might be influenced by the number of trials. This study estimated the number of steps needed for UCM analysis of stroke gait and if it is the same for healthy subjects. Twenty-five volunteers participated, sixteen in the stroke group (age 59.0 ± 7.5 years, ten hemiparesis at right), and nine in the healthy group (age 59.2 ± 4.9 years). We applied the UCM analysis over each lower limb's single support phase (SSP). The center of mass in the sagittal plane was the task variable, and the ankle, knee and hip joint angles, the elemental variables. The results obtained with 40 steps were used as a reference and compared with those obtained separately from 10, 20, and 30 steps. The mean values of the curves along the SSP were compared between the sets of steps. Further, for each volunteer, we calculated the Pearson correlation between the 40 steps curve and those obtained with other numbers of steps. Our results indicate that (1) the number of steps necessary to perform UCM analysis of stroke gait is larger than those necessary in healthy condition, (2) the synergy index is less sensitive to the number of steps than the UCM components (V_UCM and V_ORT), and (3) the analysis of the UCM over time requires a more significant number of steps than the mean values.

A distal external focus of attention facilitates compensatory coordination of body parts

ABSTRACT Many studies have shown that focusing on an intended movement effect that is farther away from the body (distal external focus) results in performance benefits relative to focusing on an effect that is closer to the body (proximal external focus) or focusing on the body itself (internal focus) (see, Chua, Jimenez-Diaz, Lewthwaite, Kim & Wulf, 2021). Furthermore, the advantages of a distal external focus seem to be particularly pronounced in skilled performers (Singh & Wulf, 2020). The present study examined whether such benefits of more distal attentional focus may be associated with enhanced functional variability. Volleyball players (n = 20) performed 60 overhand volleyball serves to a target. Using a within-participants design, the effects of a distal external focus (bullseye), proximal external focus (ball) and an internal focus (hand) were compared. The distal focus condition resulted in significantly higher accuracy scores than did the proximal and internal focus conditions. In addition, uncontrolled manifold analysis showed that functional variability (as measured by the index of synergy) was greatest in the distal focus condition. These findings suggest that a distal external focus on the task goal may enhance movement outcomes by optimising compensatory coordination of body parts.

Synergistic control of hand position, velocity, and acceleration fluctuates across time during simulated Nordic skiing

A central application of Uncontrolled Manifold (UCM) analysis is the quantification of the presence of motor synergies for the control of task-level variables during human movement. Choosing which task-level variable to analyse is a critical step in UCM analyses because this choice determines a relationship linking the motor performance and motor control. End-effector and/or centre of mass position are frequently chosen as task-level variables, whereas velocity and acceleration receive relatively little attention in this regard. Additionally, UCM analyses are most often conducted on discrete time points of a movement cycle, although these singular time points do not necessarily represent the characteristics of the whole cycle. Accordingly, the purpose of this investigation was to explore synergistic hand control during simulated Nordic skiing. It was hypothesized that 1) hand velocity would be a controlled task-level variable, 2) hand position would not be a controlled task-level variable, and 3) synergistic control of hand kinematics would be fluid (not constant throughout the movement cycle). Seven varsity-level skiers completed a simulated Nordic skiing task, producing specified power outputs on a Nordic skiing ergometer. Normalized time series of indices of task control from UCM analyses were analyzed using statistical parametric mapping. Synergies were observed for all of position, velocity, and acceleration (p < 0.0001), but not for the entire- skiing cycle. Therefore, UCM analyses conducted on discrete time points are not recommended without suitable a priori justification because its outputs fluctuate across time- especially during continuous movements. Velocity and acceleration should be considered in the choice of task-level variables, especially if they help define task performance.

Uncontrolled Manifold Analysis of the Effects of Different Fatigue Locations on Kinematic Coordination During a Repetitive Upper-Limb Task.

Fatigue at individual joints is known to affect interjoint coordination during repetitive multijoint tasks. However, how these coordination adjustments affect overall task stability is unknown. Twelve participants completed a repetitive pointing task at rest and after fatigue of the shoulder, elbow, and trunk. Upper-limb and trunk kinematics were collected. Uncontrolled manifold framework was applied to a kinematic model to link elemental variables to endpoint fingertip position. Mixed and one-way analysis of variances determined effects (phase and fatigue location) on variance components and synergy index, respectively. The shoulder fatigue condition had the greatest impact in causing increases in variance components and a decreased synergy index in the late phase of movement, suggesting more destabilization of the interjoint task caused by shoulder fatigue.
