A MULTI-EPOCH TIMING AND SPECTRAL STUDY OF THE ULTRALUMINOUS X-RAY NGC 5408 X-1 WITHXMM-Newton

We present results of new XMM-Newton observations of the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) NGC 5408 X-1, one of the few ULXs to show quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO). We detect QPOs in each of four new (~ 100 ks) pointings, expanding the range of frequencies observed from 10 - 40 mHz. We compare our results with the timing and spectral correlations seen in stellar-mass black hole systems, and find that the qualitative nature of the timing and spectral behavior of NGC 5408 X-1 is similar to systems in the steep power-law state exhibiting Type-C QPOs. However, in order for this analogy to quantitatively hold we must only be seeing the so-called saturated portion of the QPO frequency - photon index (or disk flux) relation. Assuming this to be the case, we place a lower limit on the mass of NGC 5408 X-1 of > 800 solar masses. Alternatively, the QPO frequency is largely independent of the spectral parameters, in which case a close analogy with the Type-C QPOs in stellar systems is problematic. Measurement of the source's timing properties over a wider range of energy spectral index is needed to definitively resolve this ambiguity. We searched all the available data for both a broad Fe emission line as well as high frequency QPO analogs (0.1 - 1 Hz), but detected neither. We place upper limits on the equivalent width of any Fe emission feature in the 6 - 7 keV band, and of the amplitude (rms) of a high frequency QPO analog of approximately 10 eV and approximately 4%, respectively.

SPITZEROBSERVATIONS OF MF 16 NEBULA AND THE ASSOCIATED ULTRALUMINOUS X-RAY SOURCE

We present Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) observations of the ultra-luminous X-ray source (ULX) NGC 6946 X-1 and its associated nebula MF 16. This ULX has very similar properties to the famous Holmberg II ULX, the first ULX to show a prominent infrared [O IV] emission line comparable to those found in AGN. This paper attempts to constrain the ULX Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) given the optical/UV photometric fluxes and high-resolution X-ray observations. Specifically, Chandra X-ray data and published Hubble optical/UV data are extrapolated to produce a model for the full optical to X-ray SED. The photoionization modeling of the IR lines and ratios is then used to test different accretion spectral models. While either an irradiated disk model or an O-supergiant plus accretion disk model fit the data very well, we prefer the latter because it fits the nebular parameters slightly better. In this second case the accretion disk alone dominates the extreme-UV and X-ray emission, while an O-supergiant is responsible for most of the far-UV emission.

OPTICAL EMISSION OF THE ULTRALUMINOUS X-RAY SOURCE NGC 5408 X-1: DONOR STAR OR IRRADIATED ACCRETION DISK?

We obtained 3 epochs of simultaneous Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/Wide Field Camera 3 and Chandra observations of the ultraluminous X-ray source NGC 5408 X-1. The counterpart of the X-ray source is seen in all HST filters, from the UV through the NIR, and for the first time, we resolve the optical nebula around the ULX. We identified a small OB association near the ULX that may be the birthplace of the system. The stellar association is young, ~ 5 Myr, contains massive stars up to 40 solar masses, and is thus similar to associations seen near other ULXs, albeit younger. The UV/Optical/NIR spectral energy distribution (SED) of the ULX counterpart is consistent with that of a B0I supergiant star. We are also able to fit the whole SED from the X-rays to the NIR with an irradiated disk model. The three epochs of data show only marginal variability and thus, we cannot firmly conclude on the nature of the optical emission.

X-ray spectral states and metallicity in the ultraluminous X-ray sources NGC 1313 X-1 and X-2

We present a systematic analysis of the X-ray spectra of NGC 1313 X-1 and NGC 1313 X-2, using three years of XMM–Newton observations. We fitted the continuum with a Comptonization model plus a multicolour blackbody disc, which describes the effects of an accretion disc plus a corona. We checked the consistency of this spectral model on the basis of the variability patterns of its spectral parameters. We found that the two sources show different spectral states. We tentatively interpret the observed behaviour of NGC 1313 X-1 and X-2 within the framework of near-Eddington and/or super-Eddington accretion. We also attempted to determine the chemical abundances in the local environment of NGC 1313 X-1 and X-2 from the EPIC and RGS spectra. The results appear to indicate subsolar metallicity for both sources.

Searching for the orbital period of the ultraluminous X-ray source NGC 1313 X-2

We analyzed the longest phase-connected photometric dataset available for NGC 1313 X-2, looking for the ~6 day modulation reported by Liu et al. (2009). The folded B band light curve shows a 6 day periodicity with a significance slightly larger than 3 sigma. The low statistical significance of this modulation, along with the lack of detection in the V band, make its identification uncertain.

THE OPTICAL COUNTERPART OF NGC 1313 X-1

We identify the optical counterpart of the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) NGC 1313 X-1 and discuss constraints on its physical nature from multiband optical spectra. There is a single object on Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images within the aspect-corrected Chandra X-ray error circle; a fainter, possibly extended, feature lies near the edge of the error circle. The brighter object showed prominent variation in the F555W band, but was constant in the F814W band. The spectrum was consistent with a single power-law on 2003 Nov 17, but deviated from this on 2004 Jul 17, suggestive of more than one emission component. Based on the location, magnitudes, spectral shape, and variability of the bright object, it is likely the ULX counterpart. The red wing of the spectrum around F814W may be due to emission from the companion star, and the blue wing is likely from disk emission. The stellar population around X-1 has an age older than 30 Myr, without very blue stars or young clusters. This places a constraint on the companion mass of the ULX as no more than 10 solar masses.

BROAD COMPONENTS IN OPTICAL EMISSION LINES FROM THE ULTRA-LUMINOUS X-RAY SOURCE NGC 5408 X-1

High-resolution optical spectra of the ultraluminous X-ray source NGC 5408 X-1 show a broad component with a width of ~750 km/s in the HeII and Hbeta lines in addition to the narrow component observed in these lines and [O III]. Reanalysis of moderate-resolution spectra shows a similar broad component in the HeII line. The broad component likely originates in the ULX system itself, probably in the accretion disk. The central wavelength of the broad HeII line is shifted by 252 \pm 47 km/s between the two observations. If this shift represents motion of the compact object, then its mass is less than ~1800 M_sun.

INTERPRETATION OF THE 115 DAY PERIODIC MODULATION IN THE X-RAY FLUX OF NGC 5408 X-1

We comment on the recent observation of a 115-day modulation in the X-ray flux of the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) NGC 5408 X-1, and in particular, the interpretation of this modulation as the orbital period. We suggest that this modulation may instead be due to a precessing jet, and is thus superorbital in nature. Comparing the properties of this ULX with those of the prototypical microquasar SS 433, we argue that NGC 5408 X-1 is very similar to SS 433: a hyper-accreting stellar mass black hole in a shorter-period binary. If the analogy holds, the 115-day modulation is best explained by the still poorly-understood physics of inner-disc/jet precession and a longer observing baseline would be able to reveal an intrinsic phase jitter that is associated with such a precession.

Associated spectral and temporal state transition of the bright ULX NGC 1313 X-1

(Abridged) Stellar mass black hole X-ray binaries exhibit X-ray spectral states which also have distinct and characteristic temporal properties. These states are believed to correspond to different accretion disk geometries. We present analysis of two long XMM-Newton observations of the Ultra-Luminous X-ray source (ULX) NGC 1313 X-1, which reveal that the system was in two different spectral/temporal states. With a count rate of 1.5 counts/s and a fractional variability amplitude of ~15%, the ULX was in a high flux and strongly variable state in March 2006. In October 2006, the count rate of the ULX had reduced by a factor of ~2 and the spectral shape was distinctly different with the presence of a soft component. No strong variability was detected during this low flux state with an upper limit on the amplitude < 3%. Moreover, the spectral properties of the two states implies that the accretion disk geometry was different for them. The low flux state is consistent with a model where a standard accretion disk is truncated at a radius of ~17 Schwarzschild radius around a ~200 Msun black hole. The inner hot region Comptonizes photons from the outer disk to give the primary spectral component. The spectrum of the high flux state is not compatible with such a geometry. Instead, it is consistent with a model where a hot corona covers a cold accretion disk and Comptonizes the disk photons. The variability as a function of energy is also shown to be consistent with the corona model. Despite these broad analogies with Galactic black hole systems, the spectral nature of the ULX is distinct in having a colder Comptonizing temperature (~2 keV) and higher optical depth (~15) than what is observed for the Galactic ones.

The linear rms—flux relation in an ultraluminous X-ray source

Abstract We report the first detection of a linear correlation between rms variability amplitude and flux in the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) NGC 5408 X-1. The rms–flux relation has previously been observed in several galactic black hole X-ray binaries (BHBs), several active galactic nuclei (AGN) and at least one neutron star X-ray binary. This result supports the hypothesis that a linear rms–flux relation is common to all luminous black hole accretion and perhaps even a fundamental property of accretion flows about compact objects. We also show for the first time the cross-spectral properties of the variability of this ULX, comparing variations below and above 1 keV. The coherence and time delays are poorly constrained but consistent with high coherence between the two bands, over most of the observable frequency range and a significant time delay (with hard leading soft variations). The magnitude and frequency dependence of the lags are broadly consistent with those commonly observed in BHBs, but the direction of the lag is reversed. These results indicate that ULX variability studies, using long X-ray observations, hold great promise for constraining the processes driving ULXs behaviour, and the position of ULXs in the scheme of black hole accretion from BHBs to AGN.

DIRECT DETECTION OF AN ULTRALUMINOUS ULTRAVIOLET SOURCE

We present Hubble Space Telescope observations in the far UV of the ultraluminous X-ray source in NGC 6946 associated with the optical nebula MF 16. Both a point-like source coincident with the X-ray source and the surrounding nebula are detected in the FUV. The point source has a flux of 5E-16 erg s^-1 cm^-2 Ang^-1 and the nebula has a flux of 1.6E-15 erg s^-1 cm^-2 Ang^-1, quoted at 1533 Ang and assuming an extinction of A_V = 1.54. Thus, MF 16 appears to host the first directly detected ultraluminous UV source (ULUV). The flux of the point-like source is consistent with a blackbody with T ~ 30,000 K, possibly from a massive companion star, but this spectrum does not create sufficient ionizing radiation to produce the nebular HeII flux and a second, hotter emission component would be required. A multicolor disk blackbody spectrum truncated with an outer disk temperature of ~16,000 K provides an adequate fit to the FUV, B, V, I, and HeII fluxes and can produce the needed ionizing radiation. Additional observations are required to determine the physical nature of the source.

The black hole in NGC 1313 X-2: constraints on the mass from optical observations

Abstract We present a theoretical study on the nature of the ultraluminous X-ray source NGC 1313 X-2. We evolved a set of binaries with high-mass donor stars orbiting a 20 M⊙ or a 50–100 M⊙ black hole (BH). Using constraints from optical observations, we restricted the candidate binary system for NGC 1313 X-2 to be either a 50–100 M⊙ BH accreting from a 12–15 M⊙ main-sequence star or a ∼20 M⊙ BH with a 12–15 M⊙ giant donor. If the modulation of 6.12 ± 0.16 d recently identified as the orbital period of the system is confirmed, a ∼20 M⊙ BH model becomes unlikely and we are left with the only possibility that the compact accretor in NGC 1313 X-2 is a massive BH of ∼50–100 M⊙.

DISCOVERY OF A 115 DAY ORBITAL PERIOD IN THE ULTRALUMINOUS X-RAY SOURCE NGC 5408 X-1

We report the detection of a 115 day periodicity in SWIFT/XRT monitoring data from the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) NGC 5408 X-1. Our ongoing campaign samples its X-ray flux approximately twice weekly and has now achieved a temporal baseline of ~485 days. Periodogram analysis reveals a significant periodicity with a period of 115.5 +- 4 days. The modulation is detected with a significance of 3.2 e-4. The fractional modulation amplitude decreases with increasing energy, ranging from 0.13 above 1 keV to 0.24 below 1 keV. The shape of the profile evolves as well, becoming less sharply peaked at higher energies. The periodogram analysis is consistent with a periodic process, however, continued monitoring is required to confirm the coherent nature of the modulation. Spectral analysis indicates that NGC 5408 X-1 can reach 0.3 - 10 keV luminosities of ~2 e40 ergs/s. We suggest that, like the 62 day period of the ULX in M82 (X41.4+60), the periodicity detected in NGC 5408 X-1 represents the orbital period of the black hole binary containing the ULX. If this is true then the secondary can only be a giant or supergiant star.

EVIDENCE FOR AN INTERMEDIATE-MASS BLACK HOLE IN NGC 5408 X-1

We report the discovery with XMM-Newton of correlated spectral and timing behavior in the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) NGC 5408 X-1. An ~100 ksec pointing with XMM/Newton obtained in January, 2008 reveals a strong 10 mHz QPO in the > 1 keV flux, as well as flat-topped, band limited noise breaking to a power law. The energy spectrum is again dominated by two components, a 0.16 keV thermal disk and a power-law with an index of ~2.5. These new measurements, combined with results from our previous January 2006 pointing in which we first detected QPOs, show for the first time in a ULX a pattern of spectral and temporal correlations strongly analogous to that seen in Galactic black hole sources, but at much higher X-ray luminosity and longer characteristic time-scales. We find that the QPO frequency is proportional to the inferred disk flux, while the QPO and broad-band noise amplitude (root mean squared, rms) are inversely proportional to the disk flux. Assuming that QPO frequency scales inversely with black hole mass at a given power-law spectral index we derive mass estimates using the observed QPO frequency - spectral index relations from five stellar-mass black hole systems with dynamical mass constraints. The results from all sources are consistent with a mass range for NGC 5408 X-1 from 1000 - 9000 solar masses. Moreover, the recent relation from Gierlinski et al. that relates black hole mass to the strength of variability at high frequencies (above the break in the power spectrum) is also indicative of such a high mass for NGC 5408 X-1. We argue that these new findings strongly support the conclusion that NGC 5408 X-1 harbors an intermediate mass black hole.

A PHOTOIONIZED NEBULA SURROUNDING AND VARIABLE OPTICAL CONTINUUM EMISSION FROM THE ULTRALUMINOUS X-RAY SOURCE IN NGC 5408

We obtained optical spectra of the counterpart of the ultraluminous X-ray source NGC 5408 X-1 using the FORS spectrograph on the VLT. The spectra show strong high excitation emission lines, He{\sc ii} $\lambda$4686 and [Ne{\sc V}] $\lambda$3426, indicative of X-ray photoionization. Using the measured X-ray spectrum as input to a photoionization model, we calculated the relation between the He{\sc ii} and X-ray luminosities and found that the He{\sc ii} flux implies a lower bound on the X-ray luminosity of $3 \times 10^{39} \rm erg s^{-1}$. The [Ne{\sc v}] flux requires a similar X-ray luminosity. After subtraction of the nebular emission, the continuum appears to have a power-law form with a spectral slope of $-2.0^{+0.1}_{-0.2}$. This is similar to low-mass X-ray binaries where the optical spectra are dominated by reprocessing of X-rays in the outer accretion disk. In one observation, the continuum, He{\sc ii} $\lambda$4686, and [Ne{\sc V}] $\lambda$3426 fluxes are about 30% lower than in the other five observations. This implies that part of the line emission originates within one light-day of the compact object. Fitting the optical continuum emission and archival X-ray data to an irradiated disk model, we find that $(6.5 \pm 0.7) \times 10^{-3}$ of the total bolometric luminosity is thermalized in the outer accretion disk. This is consistent with values found for stellar-mass X-ray binaries and larger than expected in models of super-Eddington accretion flows. We find no evidence for absorption lines that would permit measurement of the radial velocity of the companion star.

New flaring of an ultraluminous X-ray source in NGC 1365

We have studied a highly variable ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) in the Fornax galaxy NGC 1365, with a series of 12 Chandra and XMM-Newton observations between 2002 and 2006. In 2006 April, the source peaked at a luminosity ≈3 x 10 40 erg s -1 in the 0.3-10 keV band (similar to the maximum luminosity found by ASCA in 1995), and declined on an e-folding time-scale ≈3 d. The X-ray spectrum is always dominated by a broad power-law-like component. When the source is seen at X-ray luminosities ≈10 40 erg s -1 , an additional soft thermal component (which we interpret as emission from the accretion disc) contributes ≈1/4 of the X-ray flux; when the luminosity is higher, ≈3 x 10 40 erg s -1 , the thermal component is not detected and must contribute <10 per cent of the flux. At the beginning of the decline, ionized absorption is detected around ∼0.5-2 keV; it is a possible signature of a massive outflow. The power law is always hard, with a photon index r ≈1.7 (and even flatter at times), as is generally the case with bright ULXs. We speculate that this source and perhaps most other bright ULXs are in a high/hard state: as the accretion rate increases well above the Eddington limit, more and more power is extracted from the inner region of the inflow through non-radiative channels, and is used to power a Comptonizing corona, jet or wind. The observed thermal component comes from the standard outer disc; the transition radius between outer standard disc and Comptonizing inner region moves further out and to lower disc temperatures as the accretion rate increases. This produces the observed appearance of a large, cool disc. Based on X-ray luminosity and spectral arguments, we suggest that this accreting black hole has a likely mass ∼50-150M ⊙ (even without accounting for possible beaming).

Optical Spectroscopy of the Environment of a ULX in NGC 7331

Optical photometric and spectroscopic data are presented that show an association of an ultraluminous X-ray source in NGC 7331 with a young star cluster of mass 1.1e5 solar masses and age 4.25 Myr. If the ULX is part of the bright stellar cluster, then the mass of the progenitor of the compact accretor must have been greater than about 40-50 solar masses in order to already have evolved through the supernova stage to a compact object. The companion star is also likely an evolved massive star. The emission line spectrum of the nebula surrounding the cluster can be interpreted as a result of photoionization by the cluster OB stars with an additional source of shock excitation producing strong [SII], [OI] and NII lines. This additional source appears to be as much as five times more powerful than the supernovae and stellar winds in the cluster can provide. Additional mechanical energy input associated with the ULX itself can help explain the residual shock excited line luminosities of the emission region.

A Radio Nebula Surrounding the Ultraluminous X‐Ray Source in NGC 5408

New radio observations of the counterpart of the ultraluminous X-ray source in NGC 5408 show for the first time that the radio emission is resolved with an angular size of 1.5 to 2.0 arcseconds. This corresponds to a physical size of 35-46 pc, and rules out interpretation of the radio emission as beamed emission from a relativistic jet. In addition, the radio spectral index of the counterpart is well determined from three frequencies and found to be alpha=-0.8 pm 0.2. The radio emission is likely to be optically-thin synchrotron emission from a nebula surrounding the X-ray source. The radio luminosity of the counterpart is 3.8 x 10^34 erg/s and the minimum energy required to power the nebula is ~1 x 10^49 erg. These values are two orders of magnitude larger than in any Galactic nebula powered by an accreting compact object.

Quasi‐periodic Variability in NGC 5408 X‐1

We report the discovery with XMM-Newton of quasiperiodic variability in the 0.2 - 10 keV X-ray flux from the ultraluminous X-ray source NGC 5408 X-1. The average power spectrum of all EPIC-pn data reveals a strong 20 mHz QPO with an average amplitude (rms) of 9%, and a coherence of Q~6. In a 33 ksec time interval when the 20 mHz QPO is strongest we also find evidence for a 2nd QPO peak at 15 mHz. This is the first indication for a close pair of QPOs in a ULX source. Interestingly, the frequency ratio of this QPO pair is inconsistent with 3:2 at the 3sigma level, but is consistent with a 4:3 ratio. A powerlaw noise component with slope near 1.5 is also present below 0.1 Hz with evidence for a break to a flatter slope at about 3 mHz. The source shows substantial broadband variability, with a total amplitude (rms) of about 30% in the 0.1 - 100 mHz frequency band, and there is strong energy dependence to the variability. We discuss the implications of these findings in the context of models for ULXs, and their implications for the object's mass.

Spectral Evolution of NGC 1313 X-2: Evidence against the Cool Disk Model

The presence of a cool multicolor disk component with an inner disk temperature kT=0.1~0.3 keV at a luminosity L>10^40 erg/s has been interpreted as evidence that the ultraluminous X-ray source NGC 1313 X-2 harbors an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH). The temperature of a disk component should vary with luminosity as $L\propto T^4$. However, upon investigating the spectral evolution with multiple XMM-Newton observations, we found that the cool disk component failed to follow this relation with a confidence level of 0.999964. Indeed, the luminosity decreases as the temperature increases, and the luminosities at high temperatures are more than an order of magnitude less than expected from the $L\propto T^4$ extrapolation of luminosities at low temperatures. This places a strong constraint against the validity of modeling the X-ray spectra of NGC 1313 X-2 as emission from the accretion disk of an IMBH. The decrease in luminosity with increasing temperature of the soft component follows the trend suggested by a model in which the soft emission arises from an outflow from a stellar-mass black hole with super-Eddington accretion viewed along the symmetry axis. Alternatively, the spectra can be adequately fitted by a p-free disk model with kT=~2 keV and p=~0.5. The spectral evolution is consistent with the $L\propto T^4$ relation and appears to be a high luminosity extension of the L-kT relation of Galactic black holes. This, again, would suggest that the emission is from a super-Eddington accreting stellar mass black hole.
