Enhancement of antifouling and mechanical properties of polysulfone membrane using zwitterionic biphenyl polyimide as additive

Biphenyl polyimides, which are known by its excellent heat resistance and mechanical properties, were synthesized by adjusting the molar ratio of monomers, followed by end-functionalized with zwitterionic group via reaction with 1,3-propanesultone. The zwitterionic sulfobetaine biphenyl polyimide (z-biph-PI) copolymers with different hydrophobic chain lengths were employed as the additive for the preparation of polysulfone (PSf) membrane. X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) measurement on membrane surfaces revealed that the sulfobetaine groups of z-biph-PI migrated toward water in the membrane formation process, during which a large amount of porous, narrow and densely packed pores were created as illustrated in scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. Therefore, the incorporation of z-biph-PI simultaneously enhanced the pure water flux and protein rejection ratio of membranes, overcoming the trade-off effects between permeability and selectivity. The adsorption of bovine serum albumin decreased from ∼47.7 μg/cm2 for the pristine membrane to a minimum of ∼12.4 μg/cm2 for the blend membrane. More importantly, the tensile strength and elongation at break were also simultaneously improved due to the unique mechanical property of biph-PI and the strong π-π interaction between biphe-PI and PSf. Meanwhile, the blend membrane exhibited excellent filtration and thermal stability. All these characteristics of the blend membrane made it promising in ultrafiltration application.

Sulfite-activated permanganate pre-oxidation coupled ultrafiltration for treating algae-laden water: Role of calcium ions and in-situ formed MnO2

Membrane fouling caused by algal-derived foulants severely impedes the widespread application of ultrafiltration (UF). Herein, two sulfites (Na2SO3 and CaSO3, S(IV)) were used to activate potassium permanganate (Mn(VII)) as pretreatment to enhance the performance of UF in treating algae-laden water. The results showed that the Mn(VII)/S(IV) system produced MnO2 with abundant hydroxyl groups, which was advantageous for adsorbing algal pollutants. Compared with Mn(VII)/Na2SO3, Mn(VII)/CaSO3 process further increased the aggregation tendency of algal cells, which was due to the Ca2+ bridging effect that promoted the aggregation of MnO2 and algal foulants. S(IV) can activate Mn(VII) to produce free radical (OH and SO4−), and enhance removal of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and fluorescent organics in coordination with the adsorption of in-situ MnO2. Moreover, the presence of Ca2+ ensured compliance with residual manganese in the treated water. Extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory suggested that the Mn(VII)/S(IV) strategy weakened the attractive forces between pollutants and the membrane. FTIR analysis further confirmed that the combined process reduced the accumulation of protein organics on the membrane surface. As a result, the reversible fouling was reduced by 65.3 % and 92.2 %. The in-situ formed manganese oxide altered the structure of the cake layer and delayed the formation of the cake filtration mechanism. Mn(VII)/CaSO3 pretreatment produced a looser cake layer, resulting in a shift of the fouling mechanism towards a single standard blocking. In summary, the novel integrated process can ensure the efficient operation of UF in the purification of algae-laden water.

Network pharmacology combined with affinity ultrafiltration to elucidate the potential compounds of Shaoyao Gancao Fuzi Decoction for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis

Ethnopharmacological relevanceShaoyao Gancao Fuzi Decoction (SGFD), has been employed for thousands of years in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with remarkable clinical efficacy. However, the material basis underlying the effectiveness of SGFD still remains unclear. Aim of the reviewThis study aims to elucidate the material basis of SGFD through the application of network pharmacology and biological affinity ultrafiltration. ResultsUPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS was employed to characterize the components in SGFD, the identified 145 chemical components were mainly categorized into alkaloids, flavonoids, triterpenoids, and monoterpenoids according to the structures. Network pharmacology method was utilized to identify potential targets and signaling pathways of SGFD in the RA treatment, and the anti-inflammatory and anti-RA effects of SGFD were validated through in vivo and in vitro experiments. Moreover, as the significant node in the pharmacology network, TNF-α, a classical therapeutic target in RA, was subsequent employed to screen the interacting compounds in SGFD via affinity ultrafiltration screening method, 6 active molecules (i.e.,glycyrrhizic acid, paeoniflorin, formononetin, isoliquiritigenin, benzoyl mesaconitine, and glycyrrhetinic acid) were exhibited significant interactions. Finally, the significant anti-inflammatory and anti-TNF-α effects of these compounds were validated at the cellular level. ConclusionsIn conclusion, this study comprehensively elucidates the pharmacodynamic material basis of SGFD, offering a practical reference model for the systematic investigation of traditional Chinese medicine formulas.

Whey Cheeses Containing Probiotic and Bioprotective Cultures Produced with Ultrafiltrated Cow's Whey.

Bovine whey cheese (WC) is a product from southern European countries that presents some challenges: its production process involves high energy inputs; the yield is low; and WC has a short shelf life. The application of ultrafiltration (UF) to bovine whey before manufacture of WC and the employment of protective cultures can reduce these disadvantages. The objective of this research was the production of whey cheeses using ultrafiltrated bovine cheese whey with added probiotics or probiotics plus protective cultures. Three types of WC were produced: control CW without any addition (C); CW with the addition of the probiotic Lactobacillus acidophilus (LA5); and CW with the addition of Lactobacillus acidophilus plus a protective culture containing Lacticaseibacillus paracasei and Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus (LA5FQ4). The WCs were stored under refrigerated conditions for 28 days. The products with added cultures presented lower pH values and higher titratable acidities when compared to the control. Sample LA5 presented the lowest pH and the highest titratable acidity, while LA5FQ4 presented intermediate values. Slight differences were observed between products regarding color parameters, chiefly resulting from storage time. The samples with added cultures were firmer when compared to the control, with LA5 cheeses showing the highest values at the end of the storage. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) counts were on the order of log 8-9 CFU/g for the products with added cultures. Lower levels of yeasts and molds were detected on the sample with the protective culture (LA5FQ4), so that by the end of storage they presented counts one log cycle lower than C and LA5. Hence, the beneficial impact of the protective culture on the shelf life of the product is evident. Regarding sensory evaluation, LA5FQ4 cheeses obtained the highest scores for all parameters evaluated. It can be concluded that the use of UF associated with the addition of protective cultures can be very useful to reduce the energy consumption of the manufacturing process, to prolong the shelf life of WC and to improve its sensory properties.

Presence of iron oxide particles can reduce the cake fouling in UF systems

Ultrafiltration (UF) has been widely used in drinking water treatment. However, the deposition of iron oxide particles on the membrane surface facilitates the formation of cake layers, which limits the application of UF in iron-bearing water treatment. To understand the impact of iron oxides on the membrane fouling of UF, the effects of iron oxide particles on the bio-regulated cake layer and conventional cake layer formed at the flux of 5 and 20 L·m−2·h−1 were investigated, and compared with SiO2 particles. Unlike the SiO2 paticles which tends to increase the cake fouling resistance, iron oxide paticles could significantly reduce the cake fouling resistance. The iron oxide-UF could reduce specific resistance by 65 %～75 % in bio-regulated cake layer and 40%～50% in conventional cake layer. OCT observations revealed that in the presence of iron oxide, the thickness of the conventional cake layer increased significantly, while the thickness of the bio-regulated cake layer remains unchanged. Therefore, the increased resistance was primarily attributed to the formation of a porous cake layer, which could be evidenced by SEM images. Besides, in the presence of iron oxide, the content of polysaccharides and proteins in the cake layer decreased. Particularly, for the bio-regulated cake layer, the content of polysaccharides and proteins decreased by 80.0% and 59.9%, respectively. This may be attributed to the capability of iron oxide to mitigate microbial-induced fouling and selectively adsorb macromolecular organic matters. Consequently, iron oxide exhibits distinct properties compared to traditional particles in mitigating cake fouling. Retaining some iron oxide before UF could facilitate the mitigation of membrane fouling in iron-bearing water treatment

Bovine Serum Albumin Rejection by an Open Ultrafiltration Membrane: Characterization and Modeling.

The classic application of ultrafiltration (UF) is for the complete retention of proteins, and in that situation, the transport behavior is well established. More open membranes with fractional retention are used when separating different proteins. However, protein transport has not been well documented yet in the literature. The bovine serum albumin (∼69 kDa) observed rejection ranges from 0.65 to 1 using a 300 kDa molecular weight cut-off membrane at different pH, ionic strength, and pressure. We demonstrated that, especially with open UF, the transport of proteins through the membrane is dominated by advection, with insignificant diffusion effects (p value > 0.05). We showed that with open UF, retention is not only caused by size exclusion but also to a large extent by electrostatic interactions and oligomerization of the proteins. Mass transfer in the polarization layer was relatively independent of the pH and ionic strength. It was underestimated by common Sherwood relations due to a relatively large contribution of the reduction in the flow turbulence near the membrane by the removal of fluid through the membrane. We propose a model that allows relatively quick characterization of the rejection of proteins without prior knowledge of the pore sizes and charges based on just a limited set of experiments. Therefore, protein rejection with the open UF system can be targeted by tuning the processing conditions, which might be useful for designing protein fractionation processes.

Analytical performance of free testosterone calculated by direct immunoluminometric method compared with the Vermeulen equation: results from a clinical series.

Testosterone (T) is a hormone that is crucial for primary and secondary sexual development in both males and females. Free testosterone (FT) represents the biologically active form of T, and its measurement is of great importance in clinical practice. While application of either equilibrium dialysis or ultrafiltration is considered to be the gold standard for FT assessment, these methods are expensive and not widely accessible. As an alternative, the Vermeulen formula is a commonly utilized calculated method. This clinical study, including 190 consecutive patients, was carried out to compare FT levels obtained through direct immunoluminometric assay and the Vermeulen formula. The comparison was performed using Passing-Bablok and Deming regression as well as the Bland-Altman plot. Sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value were assessed. The calculated method employing the Vermeulen formula was considered the gold standard. Passing-Bablok regression indicated a good agreement between the two methods, with slopes close to 1 for the whole series. Although the Bland-Altman plot demonstrated overall agreement, a potential proportional bias was observed in females. Deming regression confirmed excellent agreement and reliable estimates. Sensitivity and specificity analysis revealed that the direct method had a sensitivity of 75.0% and a specificity of 93.4% in all patients. However, sensitivity improved to 81.0% in males and dropped to 18.2% in females likely due to the low number of true positive cases. The direct method exhibited comparable performance to the calculated method, but caution should be exercised when interpreting results, particularly in females. Further studies are necessary to validate its sensitivity and specificity in larger series.

Ultrafiltration to Increase the Consistency of Fruit Pulps: The Role of Permeate Flux

Ultrafiltration is a well-known operation, widely used in food processing, especially to concentrate selectively liquid compounds. However, so far, it has been mainly used to change concentration and/or clarify liquids with low viscosity. Ultrafiltration has seldomly been applied to viscous fluids. In this study, it was used to increase the consistency of fruit pulps, without changing their taste and organoleptic properties. This paper reports the findings achieved in experimental runs carried out on a pilot plant, equipped with four ultrafiltration tubular membranes (total surface area = 0.8 m2). Raw fruit pulps, namely, apple, apricot, and pear, were used to study the influence of the operative parameters on the permeate flux and organoleptic properties of the final products (retentate and permeate). The flow rate was in the range of 3.0–5.1 m3/h, at 50 °C. The influence of temperature on the permeate flux was checked, with one run with apple pulp at 20 °C. As expected, the findings show that high flow rate and temperature improve the permeate flux. Membranes show different performance in permeate flux for the tested pulps. This is probably due to their different chemical and physical composition, which could be responsible for different fouling of the membrane and, as a consequence, a different resistance to the permeate flow. The final products have the same taste as the raw ones, and each of them can be used as it is or as an ingredient. These results have a technological relevance, and, besides, the study shows a methodology for future applications of ultrafiltration.

Chemical-free vacuum ultraviolet irradiation as ultrafiltration membrane pretreatment technique: Performance, mechanisms and DBPs formation

Membrane fouling induced by natural organic matter (NOM) has seriously affected the further extensive application of ultrafiltration (UF). Herein, a simple, green and robust vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) technology was adopted as pretreatment before UF and ultraviolet (UV) technology was used for comparison. The results showed that control effect of VUV pretreatment on membrane fouling was better than that of UV pretreatment, as evidenced by the increase of normalized flux from 0.27 to 0.38 and 0.73 after 30 min UV or VUV pretreatment, respectively. This is related to the fact that VUV pretreatment exhibited stronger NOM degradation ability than UV pretreatment owing to the formation of HO•. The steady-state concentration of HO• was calculated as 3.04 × 10−13 M and the cumulative exposure of HO• reached 5.52 × 10−10 M s after 30 min of VUV irradiation. And the second-order rate constant between NOM and HO• was determined as 1.36 × 104 L mg−1 s−1. Furthermore, fluorescence EEM could be applied to predict membrane fouling induced by humic-enriched water. Standard blocking and cake filtration were major fouling mechanisms. Moreover, extension of UV pretreatment time increased the disinfection by-products (DBPs) formation, the DBPs concentration was enhanced from 322.36 to 1187.80 μg/L after 210 min pretreatment. However, VUV pretreatment for 150 min reduced DBPs content to 282.57 μg/L, and DBPs content continued to decrease with the extension of pretreatment time, revealing that VUV pretreatment achieved effective control of DBPs. The variation trend of cytotoxicity and health risk of DBPs was similar to that of DBPs concentration. In summary, VUV pretreatment exhibited excellent effect on membrane fouling alleviation, NOM degradation and DBPs control under a certain pretreatment time.

Synergistic roles of oxidation and self-aggregation in efficient ultrafiltration membrane fouling alleviation using a flow-through Sb-SnO2 anode during wastewater reclamation

The application of ultrafiltration (UF) in wastewater reclamation alleviates the demand for limited water supplies. However, the membrane fouling caused by the effluent organic matter (EfOM) becomes a major obstacle for UF application. In this study, a pre-oxidation strategy for UF using a Sb-SnO2 (ATO) anode in flow-through mode was proposed with the hopes to improve the performance of UF during wastewater reclamation. The results indicated that this flow-through ATO (FA) anode significantly outperformed a boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode in terms of EfOM degradation and membrane fouling control. It is noteworthy that apart from oxidation, the self-aggregation behavior of foulants was also involved in the mechanisms of membrane fouling mitigation. On the one hand, FA pre-oxidation relieved the burden of membrane fouling by decomposing the macromolecular EfOM into small molecular organic matter, and even mineralizing it. The effective destruction of unsaturated EfOM by FA pre-oxidation made a remarkable contribution to fouling mitigation due to the strong correlation between the total fouling index and UV254. On the other hand, the surface morphology of membrane and interface properties of foulants revealed the self-aggregation behavior of foulants. FA pre-oxidation made the foulants aggregate spontaneously and reduced the potential of forming a dense cake layer on the membrane surface, which was conductive for water permeation. Overall, FA pre-oxidation proved to be a feasible and chemical-free option for UF pretreatment to simultaneously produce high-quality reused water and alleviate membrane fouling during wastewater reclamation.

Application of ultrafiltration technology in drinking water industry of China: A comprehensive assessment of hybrid membrane processes

Abstract Over the last decades, ultrafiltration (UF) has been and will continue to play an important role in the Chinese drinking water industry. The hybrid membrane processes have been emerging as promising alternatives to traditional treatment processes. This review paper offers a thorough overview of the current status of UF technology in the drinking water industry in China, while also evaluating the landscape of different hybrid membrane processes. The paper conducts statistical analysis on the projects operational between 2004 and 2022; and those currently under construction. This analysis accentuates the evolution of scale and capacity, geographical distribution characteristics, and the driving forces. Furthermore, the characteristics and application scenarios of several hybrid membrane processes are emphatically described, including direct UF, gravity-driven membrane process, coagulation-UF, activated carbon-UF, medium-flow process, long-flow process, and double-membrane process. A granular dissection of UF membrane market distribution follows, including an incisive comparison between submerged and pressurized UF membrane systems. Finally, the potential trajectory of UF in the Chinese drinking water industry is prospected. UF applications have grown significantly in China's drinking water industry, with the dominance of medium- and long-flow membrane processes. UF technology will contribute to future decentralized water supply.

Synergy effect in blend Orange G/Rhodamine B ultrafiltration, using natural bentonite-based membrane

Abstract Attempting to reduce issues with dumping and water pollution, bio-based membrane material (MB1000), based on bentonite was elaborated for application in tangential ultrafiltration. For this, morphological properties, textural properties, and chemical structure of the elaborated membrane material were established using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analyses. Water permeability, chemical resistance, as well as point of zero charge of the membrane material were also investigated. The studied membrane material has a mesoporous structure, with a pore size of 7.20 nm and a water permeability of 318.06 L/h.m2.bar. The effect of transmembrane material pressure, pH solution, and concentration on Orange G (OG) and Rhodamine B (RB) dye rejection efficiency was examined and hence optimized. Besides, a mixture of RB and OG dyes was tested for membrane material ultrafiltration in a simultaneous system (RB/OG). Remarkably, an enhancement of the rejection results was noticed for the two dyes (ROG = 94.33%, RRB = 89.38%) resulting from a synergic effect of hydrogen bonding as well as electrostatic interactions generated from functional groups of the molecules dyes.

A brief review on systematic approach to polymer selection for development of capillary/hollow-fibre membrane for practical applications

Polymeric membranes are widely used for treatment of lean stream in chemical process industries. These membranes are used in different configurations such as tubular, plate & frame, disc-tube, spiral and capillary/hollow-fibre. Membrane modules with capillary/hollow-fibre configuration appears promising in ultrafiltration applications due to its relatively higher packing density, ease of backwashing, ease of cleaning and lower pressure drops since it can be operated at laminar flow regime with high cross-flow velocity. Hence, efforts are being made by researchers to make capillary/hollow-fibre membrane modules from various polymers, ranging from most hydrophilic polyacrylonitrile (PAN) to super-hydrophobic polypropylene (PP) and polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE). Here, we discuss the qualifying properties of the polymeric materials suitable to spin into capillary/hollow-fibre ultrafiltration membranes. Selection of polymers for making fibres requires in-depth knowledge of properties of base polymer and its processability/fabricability. The important properties to be considered for making capillary/hollow-fibre membrane are intrinsic structural properties of the base polymer like degree of crystallinity, tensile strength, tensile modulus, etc. The functional properties such as permeability, hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity etc. also plays role in selecting polymer for a given application. The polymer should also have appreciable dissolution in available solvents or should have degradation temperature higher than melting point so that it can be processed through appropriate membrane preparation process.

Application of Ultrafiltration for Recovery of Polyphenols from Rose Petal Byproduct.

One main objective of this study was to increase the utilization of raw material in the rose (Rosa damascena Mill.) essential oil industry by the application of membrane technologies. In this research, distilled (dearomatized) rose petals, the primary byproduct in essential oil production, were subjected to an enzyme-assisted extraction and subsequent membrane separation for partial concentration at different levels using UF1-PAN and UF10-PAN membranes. The results show that the permeate flux decreased with a rise in volume reduction ratio and increased with a rise in transmembrane pressure and feed flow rate. At the beginning of the process, the highest flux was with the UF1-PAN membrane, but at the end of the process, it was with the UF10-PAN membrane. Total polyphenols of the retentates increased by 27-39% and 26-67% during ultrafiltration with the UF1-PAN and UF10-PAN membranes, respectively, with the highest value obtained for the UF10-PAN membrane at VRR 6. The highest concentration factor and rejection of total solids, total polyphenols, redox-active antioxidants, and radical scavenging antioxidants were obtained at VRR 6 with the UF10-PAN membrane. The use of green technology based on enzyme-assisted extraction and ultrafiltration for recovery and concentration of polyphenols from rose petal byproduct solves practical environmental problems for the treatment and utilization of byproducts from the rose oil industry. The retentate obtained could be used in the food production, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries.

Optimization of Inulin Extraction from Chicory Roots and an Ultrafiltration Application to Obtain Purified Inulin and Hydrolyzed Fructooligosaccharides

Inulin and fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are prominent functional components in the food industry due to prebiotic and other pharmaceutical properties. Inulin is a storage polysaccharide in various plants. FOS are naturally present in various plants and can be obtained by partial hydrolysis of inulin. In this study, ground and sieved chicory roots (Cichorium intybus L.) were used as starting material for inulin extraction under optimized conditions determined by Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with a Box-Behnken design. Optimum inulin extraction conditions from chicory roots were; temperature of 90 °C, extraction time of 30 min., and liquid-to-solid (LS) ratio of 10:1 mL/g. Inulin extract was further hydrolyzed to FOS by enzymatic or acid treatment, separately. Purification of inulin extract and FOS hydrolysate was performed by ultrafiltration with a 10 kDa membrane under the pressure of 2 bar with continuous stirring. As a result, inulin and FOS were obtained at 90% and 76% purity, respectively.

Evaluation of the physical properties and filtration efficiency of PVDF/PAN nanofiber membranes by using dry milk protein

In engineering applications, especially ultrafiltration (UF) applications, it is very important to use polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanofiber membranes. In this study, membrane nanofibers made of pure PAN, PVDF: PAN blends, and pure PVDF (M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, and M6), were produced by the electrospinning technique with different contents of PVDF in each blend. The prepared membranes were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), contact angle measurements, x-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrophotometry, and differential scanning calorimetry-thermogravimetric analysis (DSC-TGA). In terms of the physical properties, the viscosity of the membranes increased with an increase in the content of PVDF in the blends compared with the viscosity of the pure polymer solutions. This led to increases in nanofiber diameter, pore size, and porosity by 261.664%, 875.107%, and 114.41%, respectively, when the content of PVDF increased from 20% (M2) to 80% (M5); this was also accompanied by an increase in the surface wettability of the membrane depending on its contact angle. In addition, the thermal properties and crystallinity of PAN improved after increasing the PVDF content from 20% (M2) to 60% (M4). Moreover, the filtration efficiency of the membranes was measured to determine the per cent reduction in pure water flux, reduction in mean depth (RMD) before and after using dry milk protein, the flux recovery ratio and porosity, giving values of 15.68%, 82.51%, 84.32%, and 67.79%, respectively, for the M4 membrane.

SiO2 Modification of Silicon Carbide Membrane via an Interfacial In Situ Sol-Gel Process for Improved Filtration Performance.

Silicon carbide (SiC) membrane has emerged as a promising class of inorganic ceramic membranes with many advantageous attributes and has been used for a variety of industrial microfiltration (MF) processes. The state-of-the-art industrial manufacturing of SiC membranes based on the particle sintering method can only achieve an average pore size that ranges from 40 nm to a few micrometers, which is still unsatisfactory for ultrafiltration (UF) applications. Thus, the pore size control of SiC membranes remains a focus of continuing study. Herein, we provide an in situ sol-gel modification strategy to tailor the pore size of SiC membranes by a superficial deposition of SiO2 onto the membrane surface and membrane pore channels. Our in situ sol-gel modification method is simple and effective. Furthermore, the physical characteristics and the filtration performance of the membrane can easily be controlled by the in situ reaction time. With an optimal in situ reaction time of 30 min, the average pore size of the membrane can be reduced from macropores (400 nm) to mesopores (below 20 nm), and the retention ability for 20 nm fluorescent PS microspheres can be improved from 5% to 93%; the resultant SiC/SiO2 composite membranes are imparted with water permeance of 77 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1, improved anti-protein-fouling properties, excellent performance, and anti-acid stabilities. Therefore, modified SiC/SiO2 membranes based on the in situ sol-gel process have great potential as UF membranes for a variety of industrial processes.

Comparative study of UV/chlorine and VUV/chlorine as ultrafiltration membrane pretreatment techniques: Performance, mechanisms and DBPs formation

Membrane fouling, primarily resulting from natural organic matter (NOM) widely existing in water sources, has always been a chief hindrance for the prevalent application of ultrafiltration (UF). Thus, vacuum ultraviolet (VUV)/chlorine process was proposed as a strategy for UF membrane fouling control and ultraviolet (UV)/chlorine process was used for comparison. VUV/chlorine process exhibited more excellent performance on NOM removal than UV/chlorine process. [HO•]ss and [Cl•]ss were calculated as 1.26 × 10−13 and 3.06 × 10−14 M, respectively, and ClO• might not exist under the conditions of 0.08 mM chlorine and 30 min VUV irradiation. [HO•]ss, [Cl•]ss and [ClO•]ss were not available and the formation of reactive radicals was unsustainable in UV/chlorine system. Moreover, VUV/chlorine pretreatment also showed better performance on the reversible and irreversible membrane fouling control than UV/chlorine pretreatment. The dominated fouling mechanism in the final stage of filtration was cake filtration. Additionally, the amount of detected disinfection by-products (DBPs) in VUV/chlorine system was significantly lower than that in UV/chlorine system. During subsequent chlorination disinfection, the yield of DBPs with VUV/chorine pretreatment was higher than that with UV/chlorine pretreatment. VUV/chlorine pretreatment could effectively control DBPs formation when the pretreatment time was extended to 120 min. In summary, VUV/chlorine system presented a most excellent performance on membrane fouling control, NOM degradation and DBPs control.

Enhancing anti‐biofouling property by incorporating graphene oxide‐silver nanocomposite into polycaprolactone membrane for ultrafiltration application

AbstractBACKGROUNDThe control of biofouling is crucial in the membrane separation process. In the present study, graphene oxide‐silver (GO‐Ag) nanocomposite was fabricated and incorporated into polycaprolactone (PCL) membrane for the first time to increase its antibacterial properties and reduce its biofouling. Characterization of GO‐Ag nanocomposite was done by X‐ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier‐transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The PCL/GO‐Ag membranes were also characterized by XRD, attenuated total reflectance Fourier‐transform infrared (ATR‐FTIR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), porosity determination, water contact angle measurement, and tensile test. Furthermore, pure water flux (PWF) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection of the membranes were evaluated. Finally, the antibacterial activity of membranes was investigated by diffusion inhibition zone test and plate count of colony‐forming units.RESULTSThe results demonstrated that Ag nanoparticles were formed on the GO surfaces. In addition, membranes incorporated with the GO‐Ag nanocomposite were more hydrophilic, more porous, and more permeable to pure water while showing a lower protein rejection in the filtration of a BSA solution. Adding the GO‐Ag nanocomposite to the PCL membrane increased the inhibition effect against bacteria. The colony counting method confirmed that PCL/GO‐Ag membranes had higher antibacterial properties than the pure PCL membrane, and the PCL/1.8% GO‐Ag membrane represented the maximum antibacterial efficiency of 90% and 98% against P. aeruginosa and S. aureus, respectively.CONCLUSIONOverall, by the incorporation of GO‐Ag nanocomposite into the PCL membrane, PWF and antibacterial property were augmented, while protein rejection dropped. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Protein valorisation from acid whey – Screening of various micro- and ultrafiltration membranes concerning the filtration performance

Cross-flow filtration allows a product-preserving and energy-saving unit operation for the production of whey protein concentrates (WPC) from acid whey. In micro- and ultrafiltration applications, size-exclusion is the governing separation mechanism. Flux and retention characteristics of 12 organic membranes of pore sizes between 5 and 450 nm were compared. Screening on a laboratory filtration plant revealed large differences regarding hydraulic resistance of the membrane and resistance of the deposit layer that forms on the membrane surface during filtration. As a result, notable variations in the permeate flux were observed between membranes. In contrast, the differences in protein retention were less pronounced. The protein transmission for all ultrafiltration membranes was below 5% whereas microfiltration membranes showed a deposit layer-dependent transmission behaviour. Compared with the conventional WPC35 production, the overall filtration efficiency with regard to the process duration for a comparable membrane area was 3-fold enhanced by a more appropriate membrane selection.
