EVALUATION OF SUPERPLASTIC PROPERTIES OF AA7075 ALUMINUM ALLOY SHEET FABRICATED BY THERMOMECHANICAL PROCESSING

The superplastic forming (SPF) process is the large plastic deformation ability of metals and alloys. However, SPF ability can only be achieved under certain conditions including ultrafine grain (UFG) microstructure, high temperature, and very small strain rate. In this work, the high-strength aluminum alloy AA7075 was selected for the experimental process due to its outstanding industrial application. First, thermomechanical processing (TMP) is performed to create a fine stable grain size for the studied alloy. The UFG microstructure was obtained after TMP with an average grain size of about 10 μm. Subsequently, the tensile test method and the bulging free-forming (BFF) method were used to evaluate the superplastic properties of the AA7075 aluminum alloy sheet fabricated by TMP. These two methods are performed at temperatures of 500ºC and 530ºC with strain rates from 10-4 (s-1) to 10-3 (s-1). The relative elongation and the strain rate sensitivity are the evaluation criteria. At the temperature of 530ºC and strain rate of 10-3 (s-1), the maximum relative elongation and flow stress were achieved at 280% and 7.6 MPa, respectively. The value of the coefficient m ranges from 0.3 to 0.6. The obtained results confirm the SPF properties of the aluminum alloy sheet AA7075.

Annealing response and yielding behavior of cold rolled advanced HSLA steels

High-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel is well established in car body manufacturing. They comprise a lean low-carbon alloy concept and can be produced by a wide variety of processing routes. However, cold-rolled HSLA steels are typically limited to a yield strength of 460 MPa by current standards. This research work will present a concept of extending the yield strength range of cold-rolled HSLA steels to above 500 MPa. A key aspect is to find the right balance between recovery and recrystallization of the cold rolled matrix during the annealing stage thereby mitigating the influence of solute and precipitated niobium. Additional solute draging power was introduced by alloying molybdenum to one of the investigated steels. A detailed microstructural analysis using transmission electron microscopy revealed that under recovery annealing conditions an ultrafine-grained microstructure with ferrite grain sizes between 0.5 and 1 μm can be established leading to large strength contribution via the Hall-Petch relationship. Strength losses related to partial recrystallization can be recovered to an extent of around 200 MPa by the precipitation of nano-sized niobium carbide particles. It is demonstrated that the presence of niobium and molybdenum in solute condition have the most prominent influence on obstructing recrystallization via solute drag. It is furthermore shown that the magnitude of precipitation strengthening correlates with the Lüders strain. The analysis of the work hardening behavior indicated that the n-value in ultrafine-grained condition approaches a lower limit value of 0.03 and raises to above 0.2 with progressing recrystallization as well as precipitation strengthening. The detailed evaluation of the tensile characteristics indicates that the strength limit for these HSLA steels ranging between 830 and 880 MPa is reached when the average grain size is reduced to 0.46 μm. The results of this study used to define robust processing conditions to securely produce steel grades in the 600–800 MPa yield strength range.

New strategy in light-weight and ultrastrong Ti40Nb15Mo30(NbC)15 refractory complex concentrated alloy

Traditional refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) generally exhibit a trade-off between high-temperature strength and light weight. In present work, a novel design strategy based on tailoring element distribution is proposed to achieve excellent high-temperature strength at a density lower than 7 g·cm-3. Specifically, a Ti40Nb15Mo30(NbC)15 composite was designed and prepared by powder metallurgy. The composite is found to be composed of two ultrafine-grained (UFG) phases including a body-centered cubic (bcc) solid-solution phase and a face-centered cubic (fcc) ceramic reinforcement phase (Ti, Nb)C. The as-sintered composite shows a uniform and UFG microstructure where two phases are interconnected. Due to this unique microstructure, the Ti40Nb15Mo30(NbC)15 composite displays superb specific yield strengths among surveyed RHEAs, complex concentrated alloys, and metal-matrix composites from 800°C (243 MPa·g-1·cm3) to 1000°C (127 MPa·g-1·cm3). The outstanding high-temperature compressive strength was found to be associated with high resistance to dislocation motion and strong dislocation interactions in both the bcc and fcc phases. The phase interface after hot compression remained semi-coherent, vindicating its high stability. The high-density of stable phase interfaces not only retards the dislocation motion due to the large image force near the phase boundary but also induces a high value of activation energy for diffusion. The high activation energy can further achieve significant microstructure stability even after a long-term annealing (36 h) at 1000°C. This work provides new perspectives for the design and application of light and ultrastrong refractory complex concentrated alloys (RCCAs) by comparison to the insufficient strength of many traditional and light RCCAs.

Synergistic grain boundary engineering for achieving strength-ductility balance in ultrafine-grained high-Cr-bearing multicomponent alloys

Precipitation strengthening is a crucial strategy for ensuring the overall performance of conventional and multicomponent alloys to meet industrial demands. However, the mechanical properties of high-Cr-bearing alloys are often compromised by brittle Cr-rich precipitates at grain boundaries (GBs), leading to severe embrittlement. In this work, a multi-step thermomechanical process is employed to regulate discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) and static recrystallization, achieving an ultrafine-grained microstructure. This optimized approach simultaneously impedes the continuous precipitation of the ordered L12 nanocrystals within the matrix and actively encourages the synergistic discontinuous precipitations of submicron L12 and Cr-rich σ particles at GBs, thereby enhancing (yield) strength and high-temperature thermal stability. The ultrafine grains facilitate uniform plastic deformation, characterized by pronounced parallel dislocation slip and stacking faults (SFs) within face-centered cubic (fcc) grains, while second-direction slips, SFs, and Lomer-Cottrell (L-C) lock networks near GB precipitates greatly alleviate stress concentration. Critically, the submicron L12 particles enveloping σ precipitates at GBs also display plastic deformation via mechanical twinning and dislocations, effectively impeding rapid crack propagation along GBs. This research not only provides new insights into the ductility-strength balance in advanced alloys but also proposes a compelling route for optimizing biphasic precipitation, expanding the applicability of high-Cr multicomponent alloys.

Microstructure and constitutive modeling of an ultrafine-grained refractory high-entropy alloy fabricated by powder metallurgy

In the present study, a novel AlCr0.3FeMoNbTiV2 alloy was prepared by means of mechanical alloying and subsequent spark plasma sintering, resulting in an ultrafine-grained (UFG) microstructure consisting of a bcc matrix phase with an average grain size of 0.32 μm accompanied by Ti carbide, Laves phases, and minor contents of Al2O3. Excellent thermal stability was exhibited by the alloy, since no considerable phase transformations were observed after a heat treatment at 1350 °C for 16 h, beyond microstructural coarsening, as can be appreciated from the increase of the average bcc grain size up to 1.50 μm. Compression tests were performed at elevated temperatures (950–1100 °C) at strain rates ranging 0.0005–0.01 s−1. According to the constitutive analysis of the peak stress using the hyperbolic sine law, an experimental creep exponent of 2.17 was obtained, which indicates that deformation is mainly controlled by grain boundary sliding, as typically observed in UFG materials, with a large apparent activation energy of 527.7 kJ mol−1, superior to that of other RHEAs reported in literature.

Effect of equal channel angular pressing on magnesium alloys − A review

Magnesium (Mg) alloys own excellent properties that includes better castability, low density and great specific strength. Mg and its alloys are easily available and economical. Necessity of Mg and its alloys for manufacturing and engineering purposes has increased, predominantly in the area of aircraft and automobile applications. The known limitation of magnesium is its poor formability at room temperature, with inadequate slip systems due to hexagonal closed packed construction of magnesium. Formability of magnesium alloys will be enhanced at room temperature by grain structure refinement which improves ductility with grain refined structure. Severe plastic deformation (SPD) procedure induces extreme strain within the sample to produce ultrafine grained structure. Additionally, few shortcomings of magnesium is increased wear mass loss and corrosion rate obstructing the use of Mg and its alloys in several industrial appliances. Wear resistance and corrosion behaviour can be enhanced by SPD thereby increasing the requirement of magnesium alloys for engineering applications. Among SPD, equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) is an efficient approach to develop and vary the mechanical and microstructural properties as per the need. In ECAP approach, the workpiece undergoes shear deformation and large strains are induced in the workpiece with no variation in cross sectional aspect of the workpiece. Microstructure plays a very important role in achieving the required mechanical properties. ECAP process creates ultrafine-grained microstructure with different number of ECAP passes with varying temperatures inducing high strain rate.

Delineating the Ultra-Low Misorientation between the Dislocation Cellular Structures in Additively Manufactured 316L Stainless Steel.

Sub-micro dislocation cellular structures formed during rapid solidification break the strength-ductility trade-off in laser powder bed fusion (LPBF)-processed 316L stainless steel through high-density dislocations and segregated elements or precipitates at the cellular boundaries. The high-density dislocation entangled at the cellular boundary accommodates solidification strains among the cellular structures and cooling stresses through elastoplastic deformation. Columnar grains with cellular structures typically form along the direction of thermal flux. However, the ultra-low misorientations between the adjacent cellular structures and their interactions with the cellular boundary formation remain unclear. In this study, we revealed the ultra-low misorientations between the cellular structures in LPBF-processed 316L stainless steel using conventional electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), transmission Kikuchi diffraction (TKD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The conventional EBSD and TKD analysis results could provide misorientation angles smaller than 2°, while the resolution mainly depends on the specimen quality and scanning step size, and so on. A TEM technique with higher spatial resolution provides accurate information between adjacent dislocation cells with misorientation angles smaller than 1°. This study presents evidence that the TEM method is the better and more precise analytical method for the misorientation measurement of the cellular structures and provides insights into measuring the small misorientation angles between adjacent dislocation cells and nanograins in nanostructured metals and alloys with ultrafine-grained microstructures.

The role of the preparation route on microstructure and mechanical properties of AlCoCrFeNi high entropy alloy

Nearly equiatomic AlCoCrFeNi alloy samples were prepared by induction melting and mechanical alloying (MA) combined with spark plasma sintering (SPS). The cast sample showed a dendritic microstructure composed of spinodally decomposed nanometric constituents of the B2 and BCC phases. The spark plasma sintered sample exhibited an ultrafine-grained microstructure of B2 phase and FCC solid solution and Cr23C6 carbides. The MA + SPS sample was strengthened by compressive stress-strain test up to a yield strength of 2029 ± 5 MPa, resulting significantly higher compared to 1366 ± 32 MPa of the cast sample. In addition to the higher compressive yield strength, the sintered sample exhibited a hardness of more than 130 HV higher compared to the cast alloy. On the other hand, the cast alloy showed high plastic deformation (29%) and significantly high ultimate compressive strength of 3072 ± 122 MPa. Together with these mechanical characteristics, the MA + SPS sample showed good thermal stability while preserving the mechanical properties even after annealing at 800 °C. This was not the case with the cast sample, in which ductility and ultimate strength significantly decreased upon annealing at 800 °C. A substantial yield strength reduction of both MA + SPS and cast samples was recorded when tested at 800 °C. Nevertheless, stress-strain curve trends were observed to be quite different between the two samples, thus suggesting dissimilar deformation mechanisms under high-temperature compression.

A review on mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering of refractory high-entropy alloys: Challenges, microstructures, and mechanical behavior

Refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) are promising candidates for those applications requiring of strong materials at high temperatures with elevated thermal stability and excellent oxidation, irradiation, and corrosion resistance. Particularly, RHEAs synthesized using mechanical alloying (MA) followed by spark plasma sintering (SPS) has proven to be a successful path to produce stronger alloys than those produced by casting techniques. This superior behavior, at both room and high temperature, can be attributed to the microstructural features resultant from this powder metallurgy route, that include the presence of homogeneously distributed non-metallic particles, fine- and ultrafine-grained microstructures, and higher content of interstitial solutes. Nevertheless, the powder metallurgy fabrication relies over a complex balance of several operational variables, and the process is no exempt of certain challenges, such as contamination or the presence of pores in the bulk parts. This review aims to cover all the peculiarities of the MA + SPS route, the resultant microstructures, their mechanical properties, and the strengthening and deformation mechanisms behind their superior performance, as well as a brief description of their oxidation resistance.

Dynamic precipitation and twinning-induced dynamic recrystallization in Mg–6Al–3Sn–1Zn alloy during multi-pass high-speed rolling

Ultrafine-grained microstructure was successfully obtained in Mg–6Al–3Sn–1Zn (ATZ631) alloy by multi-pass high-speed rolling (HSR) at a rolling speed of 1100 m/min and a rolling temperature of 400 °C. The grain refinement mechanism of ATZ631 alloy during HSR was investigated, which is attributed to mechanically fragmented grains and twinning-induced dynamic recrystallization (TDRX). During the initial stages of rolling, the initial coarse grains are refined by the intersection of twins. With increasing strain, the grain refinement mechanism is the typical dynamic recovery and TDRX. In general, twins are filled with a high density of dislocations and nano-sized precipitates at the dislocations, which can accelerate DRX by increasing the driving force or particle-stimulated nucleation (PSN) within the twins. Subsequently, the coarse grains are refined by forming fine DRXed grains via dislocation entanglement, dislocation rearrangement, and dislocation absorption. As the process proceeds, grain boundaries (GBs) migration is suppressed by the precipitates at the GBs of new DRXed grains. Thus, the growth of the DRXed grains can be inhibited. Finally, ultrafine-grained microstructure with an average size of ∼116 nm is obtained. Moreover, the new grains formed by TDRX exhibit random orientation during this process, indicating that the basal texture gets effectively weakened by increasing the fraction of DRXed grains. These findings bring forward the microstructural evolution during dynamic precipitation and DRX, thus providing a novel notion for improving microstructures and grain refinement in Mg alloys.

Constrained groove uniform pressing process for achieving homogeneously improved properties in copper

Constrained groove pressing (CGP) is a popular method to produce an ultrafine-grained microstructure and thus enhanced mechanical properties in the metal sheet. CGP is a severe plastic deformation technique that simultaneously presses the metal sheet with flat and grooved dies to subject it to large shear strain without changing the dimensions. The inherent inhomogeneity of the processed sheet may be a drawback of the CGP process. According to published research, this is caused by the sharp edges of the grooved dies responsible for additional bending strain along with shear strain. Moreover, even if the grooves are made circular, it can impart constant bending strain, but the shear strain varies. In this research, a new die has been designed to impart constant combined bending and shear strain in the metal sheet using constrained groove uniform pressing. Hence, the process is changed as the number of presses required for 1 pass are changed and named constrained groove unform pressing. C101 was used as the material for the new process. Properties of the copper sheet observed to be improved homogeneously as it was processed through the new die and process. The uniformity of the imposed strain was verified by theoretical, experimental, and simulation results.

Effect of Sc/Zr ratio on superplastic behavior of ultrafine-grained Al–6%Mg alloys

Al–6%Mg-Sc-Zr alloys with a combined Sc and Zr ratio of 0.32 wt% make up the focus of this research. The content of Sc and Zr varied with an increment of 0.02%. Their ultrafine-grained (UFG) microstructure was formed with Equal Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP). Superplasticity tests were performed at temperatures ranging from 300 to 500 °C and at a strain rate varying between 3.3·10−3 and 3.3·10−1 s−1. The values of strain hardening factor (n), strain rate sensitivity factor (m), and superplastic deformation threshold stress (σp) were determined. The microstructure and failure patterns of the alloys post superplasticity tests were studied. The effect of the Sc/Zr ratio on the superplastic behavior, cavitation fracture and dynamic grain growth of UFG Al–6%Mg alloys was investigated. The satisfiability of Hart's criterion for calculating uniform deformation value under superplastic conditions was verified. Grain boundary sliding and intragranular deformation make comparable contributions to superplastic flow in the UFG aluminum alloys under study. Al–6%Mg-0.20%Sc-0.12%Zr (Sc/Zr = 3.3 at.%) and Al–6%Mg-0.18%Sc-0.14%Zr (Sc/Zr = 2.8 at.%) alloys exhibit the highest superplasticity. Shown that changes in the Sc/Zr ratio affect the precipitating mechanism, spatial distribution and composition of the precipitating particles Al3(ScxZr1-x). The optimal Sc/Zr ∼2.6–3.3 (at.%) ratio for the Al–6%Mg alloy corresponds to an Al3(Sc0.5Zr0.5) and Al3Sc precipitated particles. The large Al3Zr particles formed through the discontinuous precipitation mechanism was detected at Sc/Zr < 1 (at.%).

Enhancing Durability and Capacity Retention of Ultrafine-Grained Aluminum Foil Anodes in Lithium-Ion Batteries.

In this study, we present our successful fabrication of commercial-grade pure aluminum anode foil (99.5%, 2NAl) with an ultrafine-grained (UFG) microstructure and high hardness, achieved through cold rolling. Under identical rolling conditions, a coarse-grained microstructure with a low hardness was attained from the high-purity Al foil (99.99%, 4NAl). The UFG 2NAl foil exhibited enhanced lithium-ion diffusivity and reduced nucleation and activation overpotentials for forming the β-LiAl phase compared to the 4NAl foil. The high-density grain boundaries in the UFG 2NAl foil facilitated the rapid formation of a uniform β-LiAl phase layer on its surface, thereby mitigating mechanical damage within the β-LiAl phase layer caused by volume changes during the lithiation and delithiation processes. The high hardness of the UFG 2NAl sample effectively prevented macroscopic plastic deformation during cycling, thus preserving the integrity of the β-LiAl phase layer and inhibiting the formation of cracks within the unreacted Al matrix. The collective advantages of reduced overpotential, enhanced Li-ion diffusivity, and high resistance to mechanical damage and plastic deformation in UFG 2NAl contribute to its superior durability and capacity retention compared to the high-purity Al in electrochemical cycling.

Comparison of Linear and Nonlinear Twist Extrusion Processes with Crystal Plasticity Finite Element Analysis.

The mechanical characteristics of polycrystalline metallic materials are influenced significantly by various microstructural parameters, one of which is the grain size. Specifically, the strength and the toughness of polycrystalline metals exhibit enhancement as the grain size is reduced. Applying severe plastic deformations (SPDs) has a noticeable result in obtaining metallic materials with ultrafine-grained (UFG) microstructure. SPD, executed through conventional shaping methods like extrusion, plays a pivotal role in the evolution of the texture, which is closely related to the plastic behavior and ductility. A number of SPD processes have been developed to generate ultrafine-grained materials, each having a different shear deformation mechanism. Among these methods, linear twist extrusion (LTE) presents a non-uniform and non-monotonic form of severe plastic deformation, leading to significant shifts in the microstructure. Prior research demonstrates the capability of the LTE process to yield consistent, weak textures in pre-textured copper. However, limitations in production efficiency and the uneven distribution of grain refinement have curbed the widespread use of LTE in industrial settings. This has facilitated the development of an improved novel method, that surpasses the traditional approach, known as the nonlinear twist extrusion procedure (NLTE). The NLTE method innovatively adjusts the channel design of the mold within the twist section to mitigate strain reversal and the rotational movement of the workpiece, both of which have been identified as shortcomings of twist extrusion. Accurate anticipation of texture changes in SPD processes is essential for mold design and process parameter optimization. The performance of the proposed extrusion technique should still be studied. In this context, here, a single crystal (SC) of copper in billet form, passing through both LTE and NLTE, is analyzed, employing a rate-dependent crystal plasticity finite element (CPFE) framework. CPFE simulations were performed for both LTE and NLTE of SC copper specimens having <100> or <111> directions parallel to the extrusion direction initially. The texture evolution as well as the cross-sectional distribution of the stress and strain is studied in detail, and the performance of both processes is compared.

Sliding and Fretting Wear Behavior of Biomedical Ultrafine-Grained TiNbZrTaFe/Si Alloys in Simulated Physiological Solution.

This work investigated the wear behavior of ultrafine-grained Ti65Nb23.33Zr5Ta1.67Fe5 (at.%, TNZTF) and Ti65Nb23.33Zr5Ta1.67Si5 (at.%, TNZTS) alloys fabricated by high-energy ball milling and spark plasma sintering. Wear tests were conducted in a simulated physiological solution under both reciprocating sliding and fretting wear conditions with different loads, frequencies, and stroke lengths. The microstructures, mechanical properties, and anti-wear properties of the investigated alloys were characterized. The results showed that the TNZTF and TNZTS alloys had much less wear volume than the commonly used Ti-6Al-4V (TC4) alloy and commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti). The TNZTF and TNZTS alloys exhibited much more smooth wear surfaces and shallower wear scars compared with TC4 and CP-Ti. The investigated alloys exhibited different wear mechanisms under the reciprocating sliding wear conditions, while they were similar under the fretting wear conditions. Compared with TC4 and CP-Ti, the fabricated TNZTF and TNZTS alloys showed a substantially higher wear resistance, owing to their ultrafine-grained microstructure and superior hardness. Additionally, the addition of Nb and Zr further enhanced the wear resistance by forming a protective Nb2O5 and ZrO2 oxide film. This work provides guidance for designing new biomedical titanium alloys with excellent wear resistance.

The mechanics of the friction-assisted lateral extrusion process

The friction-assisted lateral extrusion process (FALEP) is gaining attention as a candidate for fabricating high-performance ultrafine grain alloys for potential industrial applications. It consists of extruding metal in bulk or powder form into a solid sheet in a single operation to obtain ultrafine-grained (UFG) structures. The sheet has high yield strength due to its UFG microstructure and a shear-type crystallographic texture that is fundamentally different from the textures of sheets obtained by rolling. Apart from its single-step feature, FALEP requires lower forces than in rolling, so less energy is required to achieve large reductions. The present work introduces analytical elastic/plastic continuum calculations for the mechanics of the FALEP process. The results of the calculations demonstrate the great advantages of FALEP with respect to rolling and equal/non-equal channel angular pressings.Graphical

Microstructure Evolution during High-Pressure Torsion in a 7xxx AlZnMgZr Alloy.

A homogenized, supersaturated AlZnMgZr alloy was processed via severe plastic deformation (SPD) using a high-pressure torsion (HPT) technique for different revolutions at room temperature to obtain an ultrafine-grained (UFG) microstructure. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the UFG samples were then studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and tensile and hardness measurements. The main purpose was to study the effect of shear strain on the evolution of the microstructure of the investigated alloy. We found a very interesting evolution of the decomposed microstructure in a wide range of shear strains imposed by HPT. While the global properties, such as the average grain size (~200 nm) and hardness (~2200 MPa) appeared unchanged, the local microstructure was continuously transformed. After 1 turn of HPT, the decomposed UFG structure contained relatively large precipitates inside grains. In the sample processed by five turns in HPT, the segregation of Zn atoms into grain boundaries (GBs) was also observed. After 10 turns, more Zn atoms were segregated into GBs and only smaller-sized precipitates were observed inside grains. The intensive solute segregations into GBs may significantly affect the ductility of the material, leading to its ultralow-temperature superplasticity. Our findings pave the way for achieving advanced microstructural and mechanical properties in nanostructured metals and alloys by engineering their precipitation and segregation by means of applying different HPT regimes.

Effect of Friction Stir Welding and Tempering on the Microstructure and Strength of a Tempformed Low-Alloy Steel

The microstructure developed in a low-alloy steel during friction stir welding and post-weld tempering was studied. The quenched steel samples were subjected to tempering at 650 °C for 1 h, followed by warm rolling to a total strain of 1.5 at the same temperature. The processed steel samples were characterized by an ultrafine-grained microstructure of the lamellar type with a transverse grain size of 360 nm and exhibited an yield strength of about 1200 MPa and a total elongation of 13%. Then, the steel plates were joined by friction stir welding. The yield strength of the weld joint was about 1170 MPa, although the total elongation decreased to 1.5%. The martensite microstructure, with a high-angle grain boundary spacing of about 800 nm, was developed in the stir zone. This martensite in the stir zone originated from the ultrafine-grained prior austenite, resulting in an almost two-fold increase in hardness as compared to the base material. Tempering of the welded sample at 650 °C for 1 h resulted in a decrease in the hardness of the weld joint to the level of the base material. Nevertheless, the fracture of the welded and tempered sample occurred in the base material. The yield strength of the welded sample after tempering was 930 MPa, with a total elongation of 13%.

One of the most effective ways to increase the processing plasticity of advanced superalloys (heat-resistant nickel-based alloys) is the formation of an ultrafine-grained (UFG) microstructure in bulk semi-finished products. Such a microstructure is a necessary condition for the manifestation of the structural superplasticity effect in the technological processes of manufacturing products from such superalloys. One of the most promising methods for producing UFG microstructures is thermomechanical treatment (TMT) according to the multiple isothermal forging scheme. It has been shown that the EK79 superalloy after TMT, with a gradual decrease in the processing temperature from 0.88 to 0.62 Ts (where Ts is the strengthening phase dissolution temperature) leads to the transformation of the initial microduplex fine-grained microstructure into a mixed UFG microstructure. Such a mixed UFG microstructure consists of: 1) relatively coarse (inherited from the fine-grain microstructure) particles – γ'-phase with a size of 3.0±0.8 μm; 2) γ-grains, and incoherent γ'-phase particles with a size of 0.3–0.5 μm; 3) strengthening coherent intragranular γ'-phase particles with a size of 0.05–0.1 μm, released upon cooling from the TMT temperature to room temperature. During uniaxial compression tests, the EK79 superalloy with such microstructure, demonstrates low-temperature superplasticity in the temperature range of 800–1000 °C. It has been found that an increase in the deformation temperature up to 1000 °C, leads to the increase of γ-phase grains to micron size. The maintenance of superplastic properties in the presence of relatively coarse incoherent particles in the microstructure of the second phase (γ'-phase) is apparently related to the fact that the deformation is localised in the UFG component.

Combined severe plastic deformation processing of commercial purity titanium enables superior fatigue resistance for next generation implants

Commercial purity titanium (cp-Ti) is considered for replacing Ti64 as an implant material in various applications, due to the potential toxicity associated with the release of Al and V ions. However, the mechanical properties of cp-Ti, particularly fatigue resistance, are inadequate for this purpose. In this study, cp-Ti grade 4 rods were processed using a combination of equal channel angular pressing and rotary swaging (ECAP/RS). Tensile and fatigue tests were conducted, along with detailed microscopy and evaluation of corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. An average yield strength of 1383 MPa was obtained while maintaining moderate ductility of 10 %. This represents the highest strength ever recorded for cp-Ti, even exceeding that of Ti64. Additionally, fatigue endurance limit increased by 43 % up to 600 MPa, almost obtaining that of Ti64. Strengthening mechanisms were attributed to the ultrafine-grained (UFG) microstructure generated by ECAP/RS, along with strong crystallographic texture and formation of sub-grain structure. Furthermore, the corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of cp-Ti were largely unaffected, potentially easing regulatory transition in future medical devices. Thus, these results demonstrate high potential of combined ECAP/RS processing to manufacture UFG cp-Ti grade 4 materials that prospectively allow for the substitution of questionable alloys and downsizing of medical implants.
