A Life in Linguistics and Communication Disorders: An Interview with Christiane Baltaxe Emmy Goldknopf University of California, Los Angeles Dr. Christiane Baltaxe has been a pioneer in work on language and com- munication in autism as well as in work on communication disorders and psychiatric conditions more generally. Born in an area which was then part of Gennany, Dr. Baltaxe first trained in Europe as a translator and then immigrated to the United States. She wrote her own undergraduate linguistics program at UCLA and then did her Ph.D. in the newly created linguistics department. Dr. Baltaxe's wide-ranging studies in linguistics at UCLA, including work on historical linguistics, computer linguistics, and linguistic anthropology, influenced her later work on communication disorders. Her dissertation focused on the history and development of distinctive feature analysis; she also translated Trubetskoy's Grundziige del' Fonology 'Prin- ciples of Phonology' into English. After doing postdoctoral work at UCLA's Neuropsychiatric Institute (NPI), Dr. Baltaxe joined the faculty there and also became licensed as a speech pathologist. In her research, she has employed qualitative techniques such as cohesion analysis as well as quantitative experimental techniques. In addition to doing research, teaching, and clinical work, she founded the NPI's Department of Communication Disorders and developed the communication disorders component of the NPl's Interdisciplinary Program in Developmental Disabilities which for many years promoted communication among different disciplines at the hospital. Over the years, she has mentored many people, including postdoctoral students and graduate students in linguistics, applied linguistics, and other disciplines, as well as speech pathologists. She recently retired from the faculty at the NPI, but continues to see patients and do research there. Emmy: Can you tell me about your early life? Chris: I was born in eastern Gennany.! My mother was Gennan, my father was French-actually Belgian, but he spoke French. And when I was a young kid he would go for a walk with me or he would take me on his bike and point certain things out in French. So I already had some notion that there are other languages around, in an environment where this was not a common thing. The.n he was miss- ing in the war. I had three siblings. I was the oldest and we had to leave our place because the Russian front was coming. So when I was about ten years old we fled to western Gennany-to Bavaria. We were refugees. This was in February of '45. Occupational Therapy Assessment and Treatment in a Hospital Setting for Patients with Epilepsy

One Reed is a unit at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute for the evaluation and treatment of patients with poorly controlled seizure disorders. Like many other patients with epilepsy, these individuals frequently experience problems in many facets of daily living. This paper describes the twofold purpose of occupational therapy on One Reed: to provide a program of activity and socialization during the extended period of medical evaluation, and to help patients identify problems in their daily life activities and develop the skills which will enable them to function better after hospitalization. The frame of reference which guides practice is identified and the methods and instruments of occupational therapy assessment for this patient population are described. Typical examples of daily living problems are given, and some occupational therapy methods for dealing with the problems are enumerated.

Use of the MMPI with multiple personality patients.

The MMPI was administered to the primary personality of each of the 18 multiple personality patients who had been hospitalized on an adult inpatient psychiatric ward at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute over the 10-yr. period from January 1972 to January 1982. Three MMPI profiles were 4-8 codetypes, three profiles were 2-8/8-2 codetypes, three profiles were various other codetypes, and six of the profiles were invalid due to extremely high F scales. The remaining three patients refused to cooperate with the administration of the MMPI. This study helped clarify issues in using the MMPI in patients with dissociative disorders.

Professional Characteristics of Psychiatric Residents Trained at the Ucla Neuropsychiatric Institute, 1956–1975

Psychiatrists who trained at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute Residency program from 1956–1975 were surveyed about their current professional activities. The large majority lead diversified careers. Less than half of responding graduates spend more than half of their professional time in office private practice and more than three-fourths have medical school appointments. Fewer recent graduates have engaged in psychoanalytic training and more have taken post-residency subspecialty fellowships. Recent graduates have been more involved with administrative, consultative, and hospital work than earlier graduates. Recent graduates also more frequently report marital/family problems, socio-economically disadvantaged patients, minority group patients, epilepsy, and group therapy methods to be very or moderately important in their work. Factors contributing to changing practice patterns are discussed.

A Survey of Depressive Symptoms in a Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Population: Interview Data

Abstract One hundred and two of 210 children referred to UCLA-Neuropsychiatric Institute Child Division who completed the Short Children's Depression Inventory (SCDI) were, in addition to their parents, systematically interviewed by one of us (GAC) who was blind to CDI results. Children were diagnosed according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria (RDC) and DSM III diagnostic categories. From their SCDI scores 50% of children were considered moderately depressed; almost 25% were rated at least moderately depressed at interview; and 28 had an affective disorder diagnosis. The SCDI score of these affective disorder children (14.1 ± 7.7) was almost twice that of nonaffective disorder children (8.0 ± 6.3). The greater number of children who appeared depressed on the basis of SCDI scores compared to those with diagnosed affective disorder is accounted for by children who are miserable secondary to other psychosocial difficulties but who do not meet rigid criteria for affective disorder.

Suicide potential and behavior in children ages 4 to 12.

From a population of 662 children 12 years of age and under, seen at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute, during the years 1970 to 1974, 34 severely depressed children were identified who were also self-abusive and/or suicidal. Case study revealed fragmented, pathological homes, where the children's affect disorders and behaviors were symptomatic of acute family breakdown, marital disharmony, and observed and experienced violence, both verbal and physical. Follow-up on all available children, at least three years posttreatment, revealed that no child had committed suicide. Treatment evaluation by the parents was highly positive, with the great majority of children showing fair to good recovery and adjustment.

A genetics counseling clinic in a mental health setting.

A genetics counseling clinic was established at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute in July 1971, staffed jointly by medical geneticists and mental health professionals. The authors discuss the emotional implications of genetic disorders for families, and the advantages of locating such clinics in mental health settings.
