Language Style in the Legendary Book Les Plus Belles Histoires et Les Legendes de France

Language style is a way of expressing thought in language so that the character and capacity of an author are implied in using language. So the purpose of this study is to analyze what style of language was used in the traditional book entitled Plus Belles Histoires et Les Legendes de France edition of Morena and to find out the type of language style which is most widely used by the authors in the book. The types of language styles that will be analyzed are the type of Repetition, Hyperbole, Metaphor, Personification, and Comparison. This study used the descriptive qualitative method which means that the conclusion of this study will be written in sentences form. The source of this study is a legendary book entitled Plus Belles Histoires et Les Legendes de France. Based on the results of the research that has been done, all types of language styles analyzed were found in that book, namely: Repetition 7, hyperbole 15, metaphor 17, personification 11 and comparison 34. From the results of this study, it can be concluded that the type of language style which is most widely used by the author is the Comparison type.

The Difference between Male and Female Language Style of Students at FKIP UHN Pematang Siantar

This research studies the difference between male and female language style of students at FKIP UHN Pematangsiantar. This research focused on what language style are used by male and students of at FKIP UHN Pematangsiantar the differences of male and female students language style at FKIP UHN Pemtangsiantar. This research applies descriptive qualitative research, aimed at describing language style of eight grade students at FKIP UHN Pematangsiantar. The subject of this study are 10 students, consists of 5 male students and 5 female students. The data were collected through recording and observation. The method covers research design, the subject, the object, the instrument, the technique of collecting data and the technique of analyzing data. The result of this research shows that there are two language style that used by male students, three language styles used by female students. The difference language style between male and female students found that intimate style used by female students but male students didn’t used intimate language style. Finally, from the result of the data analysis, the writer found that every students have different language style. Male and female students at FKIP UHN Pematangsiantar used three types of language style from five language style. Formal and casual style used by male students and formal, casual and intimate style used by female students.

Language Functions and Styles Used by Vendors at Legian Beach

As social beings, we interact each other. One kind of interaction is by communicating. In communicating, we need language so that we can convey our ideas, desires, intentions and purposes to others. This is called language function. The functions of language are important in our live. According to Bruce Tillit and Mary Newton Brother, there are eleven functions of language we usually use in our daily conversation. They describe it in their book entitled: Speaking Naturally: Communication Skill in American English (1985). Besides of language functions, there is another thing which also has important role in communication that is language styles. We can know the background of a person through the style of the language he/she used. According to Martin Joos (1976,) there are five types of language styles, whereas according to Mandell and Kirzner (2003), there are four types of language styles. This study aims to analyze the language functions used by vendors at Legian beach as well as to find the style of language they use in their conversations with tourists. The results of this research indicate that eight of the eleven language functions proposed by Bruce Tillit and Mary Newton Bruder were used by vendors at the Legian beach in their conversations with tourists. The most common language functions they use are the language functions of getting information and controlling the conversation. There are four types of language styles they use in communicating with tourists. From those four styles of language, they mostly used informal style.

A comparison of language usage in basal readers and adolescent novels

Abstract Five basal readers and ten contemporary adolescent novels appropriate for 6th grade readability were analyzed for the occurrence of three types of language styles or registers: formal, informal, technical‐special. Results indicated that the basal readers contained examples of all three types of register while the novels contained relatively few examples of technical‐special language. Overall, a much greater amount of informal language was found in the novels. The results were discussed in terms of implications for teachers and instruction.
