The aim of this research was to determine the effect of various types of organic fertilizer on the vegetative growth of dragon fruit. The research used an experiment using the Completely Randomized Design method with four treatments A1 = Goat Manure, A2 = Cow Manure, A3 = Guano Fertilizer, A4 = Chicken Manure with four replications. The results of the research showed that the application of various kinds of organic fertilizer had a very significant effect on plant height and a significant effect on the number of branches of dragon fruit plants. Providing organic fertilizer, namely guano fertilizer and chicken manure, can provide higher plant height and a greater number of branches. It is thought that the high content of macro nutrients N, P and K can increase the vegetative growth of dragon fruit plants

Effect on Growth Performance and Nutritive Value of Cultivated Azolla filiculoides As An Alternative Feedstuff for Ruminant.

Azolla filiculoides is a tiny, free-floating aquatic fern and has a potential alternative protein and fibre source for ruminants, was investigated for its cultivation optimisation and feedstuff suitability. Study 1 was conducted to investigate the influence of different fertiliser types (control, broiler manure, sheep manure, cow manure) and concentrations (0.25 g/L-1.25 g/L) on the growth performance (fresh weight, doubling time, relative growth rate) and nutrient composition (dry matter, ash, crude protein, crude fibre, crude fat) of A. filiculoides. The optimised type of fertiliser and concentration in Study 1 were further adopted in Study 2 to evaluate the effect of different fertiliser processing methods on the growth performance, nutritive value and in vitro rumen digestibility of A. filiculoides upon cultivation. The findings in Study 1 showed that cultivation of A. filiculoides using sheep manure at the concentration of 1.00 g/L is the best resulted in the shortest doubling time (3 to 5 days) and produced fresh weight (FW), relative growth rate (RGR), crude protein (CP) and crude fibre (CF) at 132.2 g/m2, 0.32 g/g/day, 21.2% DM-1 and 14.4% DM-1, respectively. Furthermore, unprocessed sheep manure (T3) exhibited superior (p < 0.05) fresh weight, relative growth rate, nutrient composition and fibre components compared to the burned manure treatment (T2). In vitro digestibility analysis discovered that T3 achieved a 24-hour accumulated gas production of 86.9 mL DM-1, with in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD), in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) and metabolisable energy (ME) of 82.9%, 43.7% and 5.8 MJ/kg DM, respectively. These findings suggest that Azolla filiculoides cultivation can be economically optimised using 1.00 g/L unprocessed sheep manure (fresh manure), potentially serving as a self-produced, nutritious feedstuff for ruminants.

Improvement of growth and nutrient uptake of upland rice grown on degraded acid soil with the application of liquid organic fertilizer

This research aimed to determine the effectiveness of several types of liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) derived from plant waste and the dose of P fertilizer on the growth and yield of upland rice on degraded acid soil. The treatments consisted of two factors. The first factor (A) was several types of LOF consisting of A1 (control), A2 (LOF containing isolates of P-solubilizing bacteria), A3 (LOF-banana waste), and A4 (A2+A3). The second factor (B) was fertilizer doses consisting of B1 (50% of the recommended dose of P fertilizer), B2 (75% of the recommended dose of P fertilizer), and B3 (100% of the recommended dose of P fertilizer). The treatment combinations were arranged in a factorial randomized block design with three replications. The research results showed that applying either LOF-banana waste or the mixture of LOF-banana waste and LOF-containing isolates of P-solubilizing bacteria improved plant height, the number of tillers, and N and P uptake by the plant. The rice grain yields among the treatments were not significantly different, but the highest rice grain yield (139.8 g/pot) was obtained at the treatment of the mixture of LOF-P isolate + LOF-banana waste (A2+A3 treatments). The 75% of the recommended dose of P fertilizer was not significantly different from 100% P fertilizer with LOF on growth and yield upland rice and nutrient uptake by the plant.

Different responses of soil bacterial community to plant-plant interactions under organic-inorganic fertilizers affect seedling establishment during subalpine forest succession.

Rhizosphere bacterial community as a valuable indicator of soil quality and function, has been widespread studied. However, little knowledge is about the response of bacterial communities to plant-plant interaction and different fertilizers during secondary forest succession. We conducted a field pot experiment applying organic and inorganic fertilizers to monocultures and mixed cultures of dominant plant species from mid- to late-successional stages (Salix oritrepha, Betula albosinensis, and Picea asperata), and investigated the responses of plant growth and rhizosphere bacterial communities. Results indicated that growth rate of plant height varied among plant species, but no significant differences were observed in soil bacterial diversity and composition among plant species or inter-specific interactions under control. Compared to control, inorganic fertilizer resulted in increases in plant growth and the relative abundance of Proteobacteria, Patescibacteria, Bacteroidetes and Gemmatimonadetes, while simultaneously leading to decrease in the relative abundance of Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, Rokubacteria and Planctomycetes. When grown with other species, the bacterial communities in the mixture resembled those of S. oritrepha in singular monoculture under inorganic fertilizer treatment, but plant growth was not affected by interspecific interaction. Unlike inorganic fertilizer, organic fertilizer significantly affected bacterial communities and increased bacterial diversity, but did not alter the effects of plant-plant interactions on bacterial communities. It was also observed that organic fertilizer facilitated later successional species' growth (P. asperata and B. albosinensis) by the mid-successional species (S. oritrepha), ultimately facilitating secondary forest succession. In addition, plants at different successional stages harbor specific bacterial communities to affect their growth, and the bacterial communities contributed more than soil properties to the variations in the plant growth of S. oritrepha and P. asperata though the bacterial communities were regulated by soil factors. This finding highlights the significance of the rhizosphere bacteria on plant growth and plant community succession. It also emphasize the importance of considering both plant-plant interactions and diverse fertilizer types in forest restoration efforts and provide valuable insights into optimizing agronomic practices for secondary forest succession.

LASSOCIATION MAIS-NIEBE ET LA RESTITUTION ORGANIQUE SONT-ELLESLE MOTEUR DUNE GESTION DURABLE DES SOLS A LOUEST DU BURKINA FASO ?

Are maize-cowpea associations and organic restitution the driving force behind sustainable soil management in western Burkina Faso? Soil fertility management is one of the key factors in the sustainability of cropping systems in western Burkina Faso. With this in mind, a study was carried out on the management of crop residues, fertilization and the inclusion of legumes in the cropping system. The aim was to determine the effects of mulching, insertion of cowpeas into the cropping system and organo-mineral fertilization on soil fertility. The experimental design was a strip split plot with 4 replications and three treatments corresponding to 3 crop residue management methods, 3 cropping systems with or without maize and cowpea, and 2 types of fertilization. Trials were conducted from the 2018 to 2020 cropping seasons. Soil moisture, the number of fungal and bacterial colonies and soil chemical characteristics were determined in 2020. The results show a significant increase in soil moisture on maize-wheat association plots of 9.28 and 8.58% for the 0-20 cm depth and 6.85 and 5.31% for the 20-40 cm depth respectively compared with pure maize and cowpea cultivation. For crop residue management and fertilization, soil moisture levels were identical for all treatments. Concerning soil micro-organisms, the results show that five (05) types of fungi were identified on the different treatments: Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, Fusarium moniliforme, Geotrichumcandidum and Trichoderma sp. The results obtained show no significant difference between treatments at the 5% threshold, either for fungi, bacteria or soil chemical characteristics. Consequently, the maize-cowpea association can be considered a sustainable soil fertility management practice in the western region of Burkina Faso. However, the choice between recycling crop residues by mulching and applying organo-mineral fertilizer must be determined by the farms themselves, according to their socio-economic reality.

Effect of Fertilization on the Severity of Attack by the Defoliator Caterpillar (Noorda blitealis Walker, 1859) and on the Yield of Moringa (Moringa oleifera Lam, Lam. moringa (Moringa oleifera Lam, 1785)

Purpose: Moringa, which is increasingly grown pure in semi-intensive and intensive systems, requires adequate fertilization to produce well. In some cases, this operation can inhibit the development of its bioaggressors. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of different types of fertilization on the defoliator caterpillar (Noorda blitealis) and moringa production. Methodology: The trial was conducted on the Kalapaté experimental station belonging to the Institut ational de la recherche agronomique du Niger over two seasons. The experimental design was a split-plot with 4 replications in which the main plots were represented by fertilizer types (NPK, cattle, poultry and compost). The elementary plots were made up of fertilizer doses (0, 0, 5, 1 and 1.5 kg/ha for organic fertilizers, and 0, 3, 6 and 9 g/package for NPK). The severity of the caterpillar attack and moringa yield were recorded. Findings: The results showed that NPK acted faster than other fertilizers in reducing the severity of attack by N. blitealis. The reduction rate was 28.40% in the first season compared with cattle manure, which is the most attacked. In the second season, compost had a similar effect to NPK. Both reduced this parameter by over 45% each compare to cattle and poultry manure. Their action consequently increased moringa yield compared with cattle manure and poultry droppings. Also, a negative linear relationship was noted between manure dose and severity of attack, while the dose-yield relationship was of the second-degree polynomial type. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: Compost can therefore be used to minimize attacks by Noorda blitealis and can enable sustainable production without any risk of toxicity from synthetic pesticides. In view of these results, moringa growers must compost cattle and poultry manure, and all other organic sources of fertilization, before any application.

FAIRE DES ECONOMIES DE SURFACE AVEC LASSOCIATION MAIS-LEGUMINEUSES TOUT EN MAINTENANT LE RENDEMENT DU MAIS PAR RAPPORT A SA CULTURE PURE DANS LES CONDITIONS DE LOUEST DU BURKINA FASO

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of the interaction between crop residue management practices, cropping systems, and fertilization on the yield of associated crops in western Burkina Faso. To this end, an experimental design comprising three factors (crop residue management methods, cropping systems, and fertilization types) and four replications was established and monitored over three farming seasons (2018, 2019, and 2020). The grain and straw yields were determined, and the landequivalentratio (LER) was calculated. The results demonstrate that the management of crop residue through mulching or burial maintains crop yields at a level comparable to that achieved through ploughing with residue removal. In general, organo-mineral fertilization stands out as the fertilization practice that improves the production of maize (43.58% and 46.09% in 2018 and 2020, respectively) and legumes (58.42% and 66.11% in 2018 and 2020, respectively) compared to standardized mineral fertilization. Legume yields are significantly higher in monoculture (from 60% to 89% for amber and from 40% to 50% for cowpea) than in association. Additionally, the interaction between soil tillage and fertilization does not appear to be a significant factor in intercropping. However, the maize-legume association emerged as the cropping system with the greatest potential for area savings (LER&gt;1) and crop diversification on the same plot when compared to monocropping. The study suggests that a combination of maize-legume associations, mulching or burying crop residues, and organo-mineral fertilization represents a successful strategy for the sustainable management of cropping systems in western Burkina Faso.

To assess the concentration level and identify the main phase-carriers of various forms of strontium (Sr), the total content, distribution and concentration of water-soluble forms of the element in Albic Stagnosoils, which composed the bulk of the arable fund of the region under study, were studied. Full-profile soil pits were dug at the long-term fallow, phytoreclamative, and fertilized with mineral and organic fertilizer variants of the experience. The study of the different Sr forms contents was carried out by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and atomic absorption spectrometry. The main Sr volume was immobilized in the composition of soil mineral phase in soils of all variants of the experience. The addition of mineral fertilizers to soil was accompanied by an increase in the total content (by 6.4 %) and concentration of water-soluble (by 5,7 times) Sr forms, compared to the soil of fallow, and intensification of Sr sorption by Mn-containing soil compounds. The long-term addition of different types of organic fertilizers contributed to the activation of stable Sr-organic complexes formation. Under a green manure application in conditions of soil solution acidity decrease, the increase in the influence of Ca-containing soil compounds on the distribution of Sr has been shown. The soils of all variants of the experience were characterized by the absence of factors and conditions that contributed to the Sr accumulation in profiles, it was suggested by the lower total Sr content compared to the mean background content for surface soils around the world and to the mean content in agricultural soils in Japan.

Cytological analysis of flower development, insights into suitable growth area and genomic background: implications for Glehnia littoralis conservation and sustainable utilization

BackgroundGlehnia littoralis F. Schmidt ex Miq., an endangered plant species with significant medicinal, edible, and ecological value, is now a central concern for conservation and sustainable utilization. Investigating the physiological and ecological mechanisms leading to its endangerment and elucidating its genetic background constitutes the foundation for conducting in-depth research on G. littoralis.ResultsOur observations have revealed a significant degree of floral sterility in wild populations of G. littoralis. The inflorescences of G. littoralis are classified into three types: completely fertile, completely sterile, and partially fertile compound umbels. Moreover, the flowers of G. littoralis can be categorized into fertile and sterile types. Sterile flowers exhibited abnormalities in the stigma, ovary, and ovules. This study is the first to discover that the presence or absence of a giant cell at the funiculus during the initiation of ovule primordium determines whether the flower can develop normally, providing cytological evidence for female sterility in G. littoralis. Conversely, both fertile and sterile flowers produced normally developed pollen. Field observations have suggested that robust plants bear more fertile umbels, while weaker ones have fewer or even no fertile umbels, indicating a close relationship between flower fertility and plant nutritional status. Our model correctly predicted that the eastern coastal regions of China, as well as prospective areas in Neimenggu and Sichuan, are suitable environments for its cultivation. Additionally, Using flow cytometry and genome survey, we estimated the genome size of G. littoralis to be 3.06 Gb and the heterozygosity to be 4.58%.ConclusionThe observations and findings presented in this study were expected to provide valuable insights for further conserving its genetic resources and sustainable utilization of G. littoralis.

Enabling Precision Agriculture through a Web-Based Fertilization Management System for Nawungan Selopamioro Fruit Orchards

Precision Agriculture (PA) is an integrated farming system based on information and technology for managing agriculture to identify, analyze, and manage spatial and temporal diversity information in specific locations to obtain optimum and sustainable benefits while minimizing unwanted environmental impacts. Fertilization is one of the crucial phases in agricultural production process considering technical cultivation aspects, costs, and environmental impacts. The current fertilization process at Kebun Buah Nawungan Selopamioro (KBNS) is still conventional, so there is no standard rule in determining the fertilization dose. Therefore, a PA approach is needed to provide suitable fertilizer doses for agricultural production needs. This objective of this study was to develop of a web-based fertilizer management system, integrating with orchard management to enhance accessibility and decision-making. The system calculates fertilizer requirements by analyzing soil nutrient availability (N, P, K), cultivation area, crop type and age, and available fertilizer types. The development followed the waterfall methodology, encompassing stages from requirement analysis to system maintenance. The outcome is a web application that manages land assets, administrative activities, and fertilizer needs tailored to specific land blocks, crop characteristics, and nutrient inventories. Subsequent validation against field conditions ensures the accuracy of its recommendations. Although comprehensive testing confirmed a 100% success rate in functionality, the system currently operates within a limited scope of variables. Future enhancements are planned to incorporate broader agronomic factors, such as soil pH and texture, to augment the system's precision. Despite its limitations, this system represents a significant technological advance in precision agriculture, promising to improve fertilizer application efficiency and support sustainable farming practices.

Differential Effects of Sulfur Fertilization on Soil Microbial Communities and Maize Yield Enhancement

Sulfur (S) is an essential nutrient for plant growth, influencing not only crop yields but also the composition and function of soil microbial communities. However, the differential effects of S fertilization on abundant and rare taxa in agricultural soils remain poorly understood. This study investigates the impact of different S fertilizer types on maize yield and the structure and stability of soil microbial communities, with a particular focus on abundant and rare taxa. S fertilization led to significant increases maize yield on two typical soils (black soil and sandy soil) (5.3–24.3%) and altered soil properties, including reducing pH (0.04–0.20) and increasing the available sulfur (AS) content (3.8–8.0 mg kg−1), with ammonium sulfate having a more pronounced effect than elemental sulfur. Microbial analysis revealed distinct impacts on the diversity and community structure of both abundant and rare taxa. Elemental sulfur reduced the alpha diversity of abundant taxa more than ammonium sulfate, while NMDS indicated significant shifts in community structures, particularly among abundant taxa. Network analysis showed that S fertilization decreased the complexity of microbial interactions among rare taxa, with ammonium sulfate leading to simpler networks and elemental sulfur resulting in higher modularity. SEM highlighted that the diversity of rare taxa played a crucial role in influencing maize yield, alongside direct effects from soil properties such as AS and SAR (aryl sulfatase). Functional predictions demonstrated that amino acid metabolism and xenobiotic biodegradation and metabolism pathways were enriched in rare taxa, suggesting significant implications for soil health and crop productivity. This study provides new insights into the roles of abundant and rare bacterial taxa under S fertilization, emphasizing their importance in optimizing fertilization strategies for enhanced crop yield in specific soil types.

Fertilizers and Human Health-A Systematic Review of the Epidemiological Evidence.

Fertilizers are widely used to supply nutrients to crops, thereby increasing yields and soil fertility. However, the effects of their production and application on human health through occupational, residential, and environmental exposure remain unclear. To conduct a systematic review of epidemiological studies on the association between exposure to fertilizers and health-related outcomes. We searched in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science for cohort, case-control, cross-sectional, and ecological studies (up to May 2024) related to exposure to fertilizers and any reported human health endpoints across all age groups, without language or geographical limitations. Data were extracted for population and study characteristics, type of fertilizer used, exposure assessment, sample size, outcome and its definition, effect estimate, and quality characteristics from the eligible studies, and they were descriptively synthesized. We found 65 eligible publications, with 407 postulated associations. Forty-six publications (321 associations) assessed exposure to inorganic fertilizers, and nineteen studies (93 associations) assessed organic fertilizers. Exposure assessed was related to occupation, residence, and/or proximity. The assessed outcomes were diverse, with considerable harmonization challenges. Inorganic fertilizers have been associated with an increased risk of cancerous outcomes in a small number of studies with methodological limitations and low replication validity, while organic fertilizers have been associated with infections and diarrhea. The epidemiological evidence suggests possible associations between inorganic fertilizers with solid organ tumors and hematological malignancies and organic fertilizers with infections and diarrhea. However, the available evidence is limited, and heterogeneity prevails. Further research is needed to enlarge the evidence base and increase the replication validity and robustness of the results.

Nitrogen Fertilization Using Conventional and Slow-Release Fertilizers at Multiple Levels in Lolium multiflorum Lam. Pastures

Pastures are essential for sustaining dairy production, particularly in temperate climates where year-round grazing is feasible. However, comprehensive analyses of their productivity, efficiency, and cost evaluation remain uncommon. This study evaluated the productivity, quality, nitrogen fertilization use efficiency, and production costs of Lolium multiflorum Lam pasture on a farm in São Miguel Island. The research compared conventional nitrogen fertilizer with slow-release nitrogen fertilizer at application rates of 320 and 160 kg N ha−1, alongside a control treatment. A Latin square design with five treatments was employed to assess both agronomic and economic performance. The results showed that the type of fertilizer did not significantly influence productivity or quality, while nitrogen levels had a notable impact. Higher nitrogen doses increased dry matter yield and crude protein content. Fiber characteristics remained relatively stable, though neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber levels tended to rise with increased nitrogen application. Nitrogen fertilizer use efficiency consistently exceeded 70%, regardless of the fertilizer type or application rate. Regarding production costs, conventional fertilizer was significantly more cost-effective than slow-release fertilizer, underscoring the importance of selecting economically viable options without compromising agronomic performance in forage production.

Phosphorus fertilization promotes carbon cycling and negatively affects microbial carbon use efficiency in agricultural soils: Laboratory incubation experiments

Soil organic carbon (SOC) loss from intensive agriculture represents a major global concern. Consequently, strategies to improve soil management to mitigate or abate SOC losses and enhance carbon (C) sequestration are urgently needed. Nutrient availability, especially nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), regulates soil C cycling and storage. While N effects are well studied, less is known about how soil P status and different fertilizer types affects SOC dynamics. This laboratory incubation assessed how two common P fertilizers, diammonium phosphate (DAP) and single superphosphate (SSP), affected microbial activity and C immobilization in the zone of soil directly around the fertilizer granule (prillosphere) across three contrasting agricultural soils (Inceptisol, Vertisol, Alfisol). Soils were amended with DAP or SSP granules and C turnover assessed with 14C-labeled glycine, malic acid or glucose, alongside unfertilized controls. After three weeks, soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), Olsen-P and microbial C use efficiency (CUE) were measured. DAP increased pH in the Inceptisol (acidic soil), while SSP decreased pH in all soils. Both fertilizers increased EC and Olsen-P, but SSP enhanced Olsen-P more than DAP. Cumulative 14CO2 emissions were 19–20 % higher with P fertilizers compared to the control, with DAP stimulating faster initial C mineralization rates than SSP, except in the Alfisol. P addition reduced microbial CUE by 23–34 % across all soils and substrates versus the unfertilized control. We ascribe this reduction in CUE to an alleviation of nutrient limitation or a fertilizer-induced osmotic stress. The co-addition of N either in DAP or glycine did not alter the P-induced CUE response suggesting that P was more important than N in regulating microbial CUE in these soils. We conclude that P fertilization increased short-term C turnover and may lead to reduced C storage in soil, however, further long-term (>1 year) research is needed to identify optimum P management strategies to minimize C losses in agricultural soils.

Responses of Water and Fertilizer Utilization Efficiency and Yield of Cotton to Foliar Biostimulant under Irrigation with Magnetic–Electric-Activated Water

The foliar application of biostimulants at specific concentrations under magnetic–electric water irrigation has a positive effect on water and fertilizer use efficiency and yield of cotton, which is crucial for green and sustainable agricultural development. As a new type of fertilizer, biostimulants have demonstrated remarkable effects in improving crop yield and quality by enhancing nutrient uptake, promoting plant growth, and increasing resilience to environmental stress. In this study, the effects of magnetic–electric-activated water irrigation and foliar biostimulant application on cotton growth and yield were investigated, with the aim of understanding the underlying mechanisms. The field experiment included various irrigation treatments (brackish water, fresh water, magnetic–electric brackish water, and magnetic–electric fresh water) and biostimulant concentrations (1600, 1200, 800, 400 times dilution, and no spraying). SEM analysis indicated that under magnetoelectric water irrigation, the foliar application of biostimulants enhances physiological growth of cotton, improving the water and nutrient uptake efficiency, and thereby increasing yield. Specifically, the effective boll number and single boll weight under magnetic–electric fresh water irrigation with an 800 times biostimulant concentration increased by 21.84–48.78% and 5.50–18.91%, respectively, compared to the no-spraying treatment. The seed cotton yield rose by 16.61–38.63%, water-use efficiency improved by 24.35%, the harvest index reached 0.33, and nitrogen absorption increased by 76.21%. Thus, integrating magnetic–electric water irrigation with foliar biostimulants offers a theoretical and technical foundation for advancing green, high-quality agriculture and sustainable production.

Effects of phosphorus fertilizer type and dripline depth on root and soil nutrient distribution, nutrient uptake, and maize yield under subsurface drip fertigation

ContextSubsurface drip irrigation can potentially increase nutrient uptake by altering the spatial distribution of nutrients and roots, but the efficiency enhancement potential of different phosphorus (P) sources combined with varying dripline depths still requires further evaluation. MethodsWe established a 2-year field experiment with spring maize in 2021 and 2022 to determine the regulatory effects of three P sources [P1, monoammonium phosphate (MAP); P2, ammonium polyphosphate (APP); and P0, no P] and three dripline depths (D0, surface drip irrigation, 0 cm; D15, subsurface at 15 cm depth; and D30, subsurface at 30 cm depth) on the soil NO3-N, NH4-N and Olsen-P distribution, root distribution, nitrogen (N) fertilizer partial factor productivity (PFPN) and P use efficiency (PUE), and grain yield. ResultsWe found a significant coupling effect between the P source and dripline depth, both of which significantly impacted soil nutrients and root distribution, grain yield, PFPN, and PUE. In P1D15 and P2D15, the highest soil NO3-N and Olsen-P contents were observed at soil depths of 0–30 and 10–20 cm and at 0–30 and 10–30 cm, respectively. Similarly, in P1D30 and P2D30, which were 20–40 and 20–40 cm, and 20–40 and 30–60 cm, respectively. Compared to the other treatments, P2D15 and P1D30 exhibited considerable increases in root length density at the 30–60 cm soil depth of 37∼52 % and 28∼58 %, respectively. Regardless of the dripline depth, P0 resulted in the lowest yield during both growing seasons. P1D30 and P2D15 were found to be the optimal combinations for achieving higher grain yield, PFPN, and PUE, as they were able to achieve a high degree of coordination between soil available N and Olsen-P, as well as root distribution. ConclusionsThe recommended approach for optimizing nutrient and root spatial distributions under subsurface drip irrigation systems involves the use of poly-P fertilizer (APP) in conjunction with shallow dripline depth and ortho-P fertilizer (MAP) paired with deep dripline depth, which provides valuable guidance for co-fertigation practices involving N and P fertilizers.

The role of sodium nitroprusside (SNP) in alleviating cadmium stress in maize plants.

Cadmium (Cd) is a heavy metal that is highly toxic to plants and animals and can accumulate in the environment as a result of industrial activities and agricultural application of some types of phosphate fertilizer. This study aimed to assess the role of sodium nitroprusside (SNP), as a source of nitric oxide (NO) in alleviating Cd stress in maize plants. Maize plants were kept in soil saturated with 40%-strength nutrient solution in a greenhouse, and cadmium nitrate, Cd(NO3)2, was applied at different concentrations, (0, 10, and 50µM). Sodium nitroprusside, [Fe(CN)5NO]·2H2O, at concentrations of 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2µM. Growth, leaf gas exchange, and leaf anatomy analyses were performed. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 3 × 3 factorial arrangement with five replicates. The highest concentrations of Cd and SNP reduced the total dry mass and leaf and stem dry mass but increased the allocation of biomass to the roots and stem, but the leaf allocation did not change. The application of Cd and SNP promoted an increase in gas exchange and leaf area, in addition to an increase in leaf tissue thickness and stomatal density. The presence of SNP at low concentrations reduces the toxicity of Cd, but at high concentrations, this compound can generate negative effects and even toxicity in maize plants.

Evaluation of different breeding waste compost applications on lettuce cultivation: growth, quality, mineral elements, and heavy metals accumulation

In China, increasing breeding waste has caused environmental problems. This study explored the possibility of using breeding waste compost (BWC) instead of chemical fertilizer in vegetable cultivation. The experiment included no fertilizer (CK), 100% chemical fertilizer (CF), 10, 20, and 30% substitution of cow dung compost (CDC), goose dung compost (GDC), and duck dung compost (DDC) with chemical fertilizer (C01, C02, C03, G01, G02, G03, D01, D02, D03). The results showed that BWC, particularly GDC, promoted lettuce growth and development. Compared to CK, the leaf fresh and dry weight of G03 were the highest, increasing significantly by 6.60 and 7.29 times, and the root fresh and dry weight of G02 were the highest, increasing significantly by 12.72 and 6.00 times. Different BWC improved soluble sugar, soluble protein, and Vitamin C to varying degrees, and the nitrate contents of some BWC treatments were lower than that of CK and CF. Conversely, CF had the highest nitrate accumulation and limited effects on certain growth and quality parameters. The mineral elements in lettuce were also affected by the type and dosage of fertilizers. The total nitrogen of CF, total phosphorus of G03, total potassium of G02, Ca and Mg of D01, Fe of CF, and Zn of G02 were at the peak. The rapid increase of biomass in GDC treatments led to reductions in Ca and Fe. Applying fertilizers would affect heavy metals in lettuce to unequal degrees, but all were within the food safety scope. The principal component analysis revealed the comprehensive effect of GDC treatments was recommended.

Profile of Polyphenols, Fatty Acids, and Terpenes in Henola Hemp Seeds Depending on the Method of Fertilization.

Botanical varieties of hemp differ in chemical composition, plant morphology, agronomy, and industrial suitability. Hemp is popular for cultivation for the production of cannabinoid oil, fiber production, biomass, etc. The fertilization process is one of the most important factors affecting the plant, both its condition and chemical composition. So far, research has been carried out proving that hemp is a valuable source of, among others: fatty acids, amino acids, acids, vitamins, numerous micro- and macroelements, and antioxidant compounds. In this experiment, it was decided to check the possibility of harvesting hemp panicles twice in one year. The purpose of this treatment is to use one plant to produce cannabidiol oil and grain. The main aim of the research was to determine bioactive compounds in hemp seeds and to determine whether the cultivation method affects their content and quantity. Based on the research conducted, it was observed that hemp can be grown in two directions at the same time and harvested twice because its health-promoting properties do not lose their value. It was found that regardless of whether hemp is grown solely for seeds or to obtain essential oils and then seeds, the type of fertilization does not affect the content of phenolic acids (e.g., syringic acid: 69.69-75.14 μg/100 g, vanillic acid: 1.47-1.63 μg/100 g). Based on the conducted research, it was found that essential oils can be obtained from one plant in the summer and seeds from Henola hemp cultivation in the autumn, because such a treatment does not affect the content of the discussed compounds.
